Absolute measurements of neutron fluence are an essential prerequisite of neutron-induced cross section measurements, neutron beam lines characterization and dosimetric investigations. The H(n,p) elastic scattering cross section is a very well known standard used to perform precise neutron flux measurements in high precision measurements. The use of this technique, with proton recoil detectors, is not straightforward below incident neutron energy of 1 MeV, due to a high background in the detected proton spectrum. Experiments have been carried out at the AIFIRA facility to investigate such background and to determine its origin and components. Based on these investigations, a gaseous proton-recoil detector has been designed with a reduced low energy background. A first test of this detector has been carried out at the AIFIRA facility, and first results will be presented.

Monte Carlo simulation of prompt gamma-ray spectra from depleted uranium under D-T neutron irradiation and electron recoil spectra in a liquid scintillator detector
We present the development and performance of a newly built recoil ion momentum spectrometer to study the fragmentation dynamics of ionized molecules. The spectrometer is based on the two-stage Wiley-McLaren geometry and satisfies both time and velocity focusing conditions. An electrostatic lens has been introduced in the drift region to achieve velocity imaging and higher angular collection. The spectrometer is equipped with a 2D position-sensitive detector with multi-hit coincidence electronics. Ionic fragments with kinetic energy ~ 8 eV can be detected with 4π collection. The overall perfor…
Background: Organic scintillators are widely used for neutron detection in both basic nuclear physics and applications. While the proton light yield of organic scintillators has been extensively studied, measurements of the light yield from neutron interactions with carbon nuclei are scarce. Purpose: Demonstrate a new approach for the simultaneous measurement of the proton and carbon light yield of organic scintillators. Provide new carbon light yield data for the EJ-309 liquid and EJ-204 plastic organic scintillators. Method: A 33~MeV $^{2}$H$^{+}$ beam from the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence …
Directional detection of nuclear recoils is broadly desirable in nuclear and particle physics. At low recoil energies, this capability may be used to confirm the cosmological origin of a dark matter signal, to penetrate the so-called neutrino floor, or to distinguish between different neutrino sources. Gas Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) can enable directional recoil detection if the readout granularity is sufficiently high, as is the case when micro-pattern gaseous detectors (MPGDs) are utilized. A key challenge in such detectors is identifying and rejecting background electron recoil events …
In this study, we have developed a new sub-MeV neutron detector that has a high position resolution, energy resolution, directional sensitivity, and low background. The detector is based on a super-fine-grained nuclear emulsion, called the Nano Imaging Tracker (NIT), and it is capable of detecting neutron induced proton recoils as tracks through topological analysis with sub-micrometric accuracy. We used a type of NIT with AgBr:I crystals of (98 +- 10) nm size dispersed in the gelatin. First, we calibrated the performance of NIT device for detecting monochromatic neutrons with sub-MeV energy g…
Recoil-imaging gaseous time projection chambers (TPCs) with directional sensitivity are attractive for dark matter (DM) searches. Detectors capable of reconstructing 3D nuclear recoil directions would be uniquely sensitive to the predicted dipole angular distribution of DM recoils that would unambiguously establish the galactic origin of a claimed DM signal and provide powerful discrimination against background recoils from solar neutrinos. These advantages can only be exploited however, if electron recoil backgrounds from gamma rays can be sufficiently suppressed. We introduce a deep learning…

Measurement of scintillation and ionization yield with high-pressure gaseous mixtures of Xe and TMA for improved neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter searches
Gaseous time projection chambers (TPCs) with high readout segmentation are capable of reconstructing detailed 3D ionization distributions of nuclear recoils resulting from elastic neutron scattering. Using a system of six compact TPCs with pixel ASIC readout, filled with a 70:30 mixture of He:CO$_2$ gas, we analyze the first directional measurements of beam-induced neutron backgrounds in the tunnel regions surrounding the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. With the use of 3D recoil tracking, we show that these TPCs are capable of maintaining nearly $100\%$ nuclear recoil pur…
A gaseous time-projection chamber (TPC) with a reconstructable $z$ coordinate for nuclear recoil tracks has been developed for dark-matter searches and $α$ particle imagings in a low radioactivity background. A TPC with a sheet-resistor field cage shows a potential to detect charge and photons produced by tracks if the sheet resistor has optical transmittance for visible light, and determine a drift length from a time difference between these signals. In this study, an optical transmittance of sheet resistors was measured to be $24.5\pm0.1_{\rm stat}\pm0.6_{\rm syst}\%$ for the $\rm {CF}_4$ ga…
A new measurement of the $^{235}$U(n,f) cross section was performed at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. The experiment focused on neutron energies from 20 MeV to several hundred MeV, and was normalized to neutron scattering on hydrogen. This is a measurement first of its kind at this facility, in an energy range that was until now not often explored, so the detector development phase was crucial for its success. Two detectors are presented, a parallel plate fission chamber (PPFC) and a recoil proton telescope (RPT), both dedicated to perform measurements in the incident neutr…
Liquid xenon-based direct detection dark matter experiments have recently expanded their searches to include high-energy nuclear recoil events as motivated by effective field theory dark matter and inelastic dark matter interaction models, but few xenon recoil calibrations above 100 keV are currently available. In this work, we measured the scintillation and ionization yields of xenon recoils up to 426 keV. The experiment uses 14.1 MeV neutrons to scatter off xenon in a compact liquid xenon time projection chamber and produce quasi-monoenergetic xenon recoils between 39 keV and 426 keV. We rep…
The development of low-threshold detectors for the study of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and for the search for light dark matter necessitates methods of low-energy calibration. We suggest this can be provided by the nuclear recoils resulting from the $γ$ emission following thermal neutron capture. In particular, several MeV-scale single-$γ$ transitions induce well-defined nuclear recoil peaks in the 100 eV range. Using the FIFRELIN code, complete schemes of $γ$-cascades for various isotopes can be predicted with high accuracy to determine the continuous background of nuclear r…
Particle tracks and differential energy loss measured in high pressure gaseous detectors can be exploited for event identification in neutrinoless double beta decay~($0νββ$) searches. We develop a new method based on Kalman Filter in a Bayesian formalism (KFB) to reconstruct meandering tracks of MeV-scale electrons. With simulation data, we compare the signal and background discrimination power of the KFB method assuming different detector granularities and energy resolutions. Typical background from $^{232}$Th and $^{238}$U decay chains can be suppressed by another order of magnitude than tha…
The search for a novel technology able to detect and reconstruct nuclear recoil events in the keV energy range has become more and more important as long as vast regions of high mass WIMP-like Dark Matter candidate have been excluded. Gaseous Time Projection Chambers (TPC) with optical readout are very promising candidate combining the complete event information provided by the TPC technique to the high sensitivity and granularity of last generation scientific light sensors. A TPC with an amplification at the anode obtained with Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) was tested at the Laboratori Nazio…
We have developed a low-energy electron recoil (ER) calibration method with $^{220}$Rn for the PandaX-II detector. $^{220}$Rn, emanated from natural thorium compounds, was fed into the detector through the xenon purification system. From 2017 to 2019, we performed three dedicated calibration campaigns with different radon sources. We studied the detector response to $α$, $β$, and $γ$ particles with focus on low energy ER events. During the runs in 2017 and 2018, the amount of radioactivity of $^{222}$Rn were on the order of 1\% of that of $^{220}$Rn and thorium particulate contamination was ne…
