The fluctuation-dissipation relation tells that dissipation always accompanies with thermal fluctuations. Relativistic fluctuating hydrodynamics is used to study the effects of the thermal fluctuations in the hydrodynamic expansion of the quark-gluon plasma created in the high-energy nuclear collisions. We show that the thermal noise obeys the steady-state fluctuation theorem when (i) the time scales of the evolution of thermodynamic quantities are sufficiently longer than the relaxation time, and (ii) the thermal fluctuations of temperature are sufficiently small. The steady-state fluctuation theorem describes the distribution of the entropy which can be related to the multiplicity observed in high-energy nuclear collisions. As a consequence, we propose an upper bound to the multiplicity fluctuations which is useful to test the initial state models. We also numerically investigate breaking of the steady-state fluctuation theorem due to the non-vanishing relaxation time in real nuclear collisions.
The parameters of the Bose-Einstein correlation function may obey an {\it $M_t$-scaling}, as observed in $S + Pb$ and $Pb + Pb$ reactions at CERN SPS. This $M_t$-scaling implies that the Bose-Einstein correlation functions view only a small part of the big and expanding system. The full sizes of the expanding system at the last interaction are shown to be measurable with the help the invariant momentum distribution of the emitted particles. A vanishing duration parameter can also be generated in the considered model-class with a specific $M_t$ dependence.
This study is devoted to a detailed numerical testing of the analytical results obtained recently for the $M_t$-scaling of the parameters of the Bose-Einstein correlation functions. Numerical testing of analytical results for the spectrum is also performed, since the geometrical sizes are folded into the momentum distribution in the scaling limiting case. The analytical results are shown to be valid in a wider rapidity-range than thought before.
We present a concise review of the recent development of relativistic hydrodynamics and its applications to heavy-ion collisions. Theoretical progress on the extended formulation of hydrodynamics towards out-of-equilibrium systems is addressed, emphasizing the so-called attractor solution. On the other hand, recent phenomenological improvements in the hydrodynamic modeling of heavy-ion collisions with respect to the ongoing Beam Energy Scan program, the quantitative characterization of transport coefficients in the three-dimensionally expanding quark-gluon plasma, the fluid description of smal…
We exactly solve the relaxation-time approximation Boltzmann equation for a system which is transversely homogeneous and undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. We compare the resulting exact numerical solution with approximate solutions available in the anisotropic hydrodynamics and second order viscous hydrodynamics frameworks. In all cases studied, we find that the anisotropic hydrodynamics framework is a better approximation to the exact solution than traditional viscous hydrodynamical approaches.
We use a set of simple angular moments to solve the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation for a boost invariant longitudinally expanding gluonic plasma. The transition from the free streaming regime at early time to the hydrodynamic regime at late time is well captured by the first two-moments, corresponding to the monopole and quadrupole components of the momentum distribution, or equivalently to the energy density and the difference between the longitudinal and the transverse pressures. We relate this property to the existence of fixed points in the infinite hierarchy of eq…
We present new, exact, finite solutions of relativistic hydrodynamics for longitudinally expanding fireballs for arbitrary constant value of the speed of sound. These new solutions generalize earlier, longitudinally finite, exact solutions, from an unrealistic to a reasonable equation of state, characterized by a temperature independent (average) value of the speed of sound. Observables like the rapidity density and the pseudorapidity density are evaluated analytically, resulting in simple and easy to fit formulae that can be matched to the high energy proton-proton and heavy ion collision dat…
We study the response function which describes the evolution of energy density induced by an initial disturbance for a Bjorken-expanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We compare the results from solving linearized Boltzmann equation under the relaxation time approximation with those from viscous hydrodynamics. While in long time limit the response becomes hydrodynamics, the non-hydrodynamic response is important at intermediate times when excitations of wavelength larger than the inverse of the relaxation time $1/τ_{R}$ are not fully damped. Therefore observables sensitive to the jet-induced mediu…
We investigate the impact of hydrodynamic fluctuations on correlation functions in a scale invariant fluid with a conserved $U(1)$ charge. The kinetic equations for the two-point functions of pressure, momentum and heat energy densities are derived within the framework of stochastic hydrodynamics. The leading non-analytic contributions to the energy-momentum tensor as well as the $U(1)$ current are determined from the solutions to these kinetic equations. In the case of a static homogeneous background we show that the long time tails obtained from hydro-kinetic equations reproduce the one-loop…
We obtain an exact correspondence between the dynamical equations in Israel-Stewart (IS) theory and first-order causal and stable (FOCS) hydrodynamics for a boost-invariant system with an ideal gas equation of state at finite baryon chemical potential. Explicit expressions for the temperature and chemical potential dependence of the regulators in the FOCS theory are given in terms of the kinetic coefficients and constant relaxation time of the IS theory. Using the correspondence between the IS and FOCS theory, stability conditions for a charged fluid which are known in the FOCS approach are ap…
Simple, self-similar, analytic solutions of 1 + 1 dimensional relativistic hydrodynamics are presented, generalizing the Hwa - Bjorken boost-invariant solution to inhomogeneous rapidity distributions. These solutions are generalized also to 1 + 3 dimensional, cylindrically symmetric firetubes, corresponding to central collisions of heavy ions at relativistic bombarding energies.
In high energy heavy ion collisions of RHIC and LHC, a strongly interacting quark gluon plasma (sQGP) is created. This medium undergoes a hydrodynamic evolution, before it freezes out to form a hadronic matter. The initial state of the sQGP is determined by the initial distribution of the participating nucleons and their interactions. Due to the finite number of nucleons, the initial distribution fluctuates on an event-by-event basis. The transverse plane anisotropy of the initial state can be translated into a series of anisotropy coefficients or eccentricities: second, third, fourth-order an…
The solutions of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics for longitudinal expanding fireballs is investigated with the Navier-Stokes theory and Israel-Stewart theory. The energy and Euler conservation equations for the viscous fluid are derived in Rindler coordinates with the longitudinal expansion effect is small. Under the perturbation assumption, an analytical perturbation solution for the Navier-Stokes approximation and numerical solutions for the Israel-Stewart approximation are presented. The temperature evolution with both shear viscous effect and longitudinal acceleration effect in the long…
Collective phenomena in quantum many-body systems are often described in terms of hydrodynamics, an appropriate framework when the involved particle numbers are effectively macroscopic. We propose to use experiments on expanding clouds of few and many interacting cold atoms to investigate the emergence of hydrodynamics as a function of particle number. We consider gases confined in two-dimensional elliptically-deformed traps, and we employ the manifestation of elliptic flow as an indicator of collective behavior. We quantify the response of the gas to the deformation of the trapping potential,…
We propose a new scenario characterizing the transition of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions from a highly non-equilibrium state at early times toward a fluid described by hydrodynamics at late times. We develop an analogy to the evolution of a quantum mechanical system that is governed by the instantaneous ground states. In the simplest case, these slow modes are "pre-hydrodynamic" in the sense that they are initially distinct from, but evolve continuously into, hydrodynamic modes. For a class of collision integrals, the pre-hydrodynamic mode represents the angular…
We study the hydrodynamic response to jet quenching in expanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and its signal in the resulting particle distribution. The ideal hydrodynamic simulations of the $γ$-jet events in heavy-ion collisions are performed in a full (3 + 1)-dimensional setup. The jet-induced Mach cone and the radial expansion of the background mutually push and distort each other. As a result, the particle emission is suppressed in the direction in which the radial flow is pushed back by the Mach cone when the jet path is an off-central one. This is the direct signal of hydrodynamic response t…
In spite of the absence of viscous drag, the neutron superfluid permeating the inner crust of a neutron star cannot flow freely, and is entrained by the nuclear lattice similarly to laboratory superfluid atomic gases in optical lattices. The role of entrainment on the neutron superfluid dynamics is reviewed. For this purpose, a minimal hydrodynamical model of superfluidity in neutron-star crusts is presented. This model relies on a fully four-dimensionally covariant action principle. The equivalence of this formulation with the more traditional approach is demonstrated. In addition, the differ…
We investigate effects of causal hydrodynamic fluctuations in the longitudinally expanding quark gluon plasma on final entropy distributions in high-energy nuclear collisions.
We study the transport dynamics of momenta deposited from jets in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Assuming that the high-energy partons traverse expanding quark-gluon fluids and are subject to lose their energy and momentum, we simulate dijet asymmetric events by solving relativistic hydrodynamic equations numerically without linearization in the fully (3+1)-dimensional coordinate. Mach cones are formed and strongly broadened by radial flow of the background medium. As a result, the yield of low-$p_{T}$ particles increases at large angles from the jet axis and compensates the dijet mom…
The recently measured correlations between the flow angles associated with higher harmonics in the anisotropic flow generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are shown to be of hydrodynamic origin. The correlation strength is found to be sensitive to both the initial conditions and the shear viscosity of the expanding fireball medium.
We show that the recently formulated causal and stable first-order hydrodynamics has the same dynamics as Israel-Stewart theory for boost-invariant, Bjorken expanding systems with a conformal equation of state and a regulating sector determined by a constant relaxation time. In this case, the general solution of the new first-order formulation can be determined analytically.
We report on the discovery of new analytical solutions of the equations of relativistic ideal hydrodynamics. In this solution, the fluid expands in the longitudinal direction and contains a plateau structure that extends over a finite range in rapidity and can be either symmetric or asymmetric in that variable. We further calculate the corresponding pseudo-rapidity distribution of hadron yields, and find decent agreement with experimental measurements in high-energy Pb+Pb, Au+Au, p+Pb, and d+Au collisions.
We use symmetry arguments developed by Gubser to construct the first radially-expanding explicit solutions of the Israel-Stewart formulation of hydrodynamics. Along with a general semi-analytical solution, an exact analytical solution is given which is valid in the cold plasma limit where viscous effects from shear viscosity and the relaxation time coefficient are important. The radially expanding solutions presented in this paper can be used as nontrivial checks of numerical algorithms employed in hydrodynamic simulations of the quark-gluon plasma formed in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collis…
Several recent results are reported from work aiming to improve the quantitative precision of relativistic viscous fluid dynamics for relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The dense matter created in such collisions expands in a highly anisotropic manner. Due to viscous effects this also renders the local momentum distribution anisotropic. Optimized hydrodynamic approaches account for these anisotropies already at leading order in a gradient expansion. Recently discovered exact solutions of the relativistic Boltzmann equation in anisotropically expanding systems provide a powerful testbed for suc…
We investigate the phenomenology of freely expanding fluids, with different material properties, evolving through the Israel-Stewart (IS) causal viscous hydrodynamics, and compare our results with those obtained in the relativistic Eckart-Landau-Navier-Stokes (ELNS) acausal viscous hydrodynamics. Through the analysis of scaling invariants we give a definition of thermalization time which can be self-consistently determined in viscous hydrodynamics. Next we construct the solutions for one-dimensional boost-invariant flows. Expansion of viscous fluids is slower than that of one-dimensional ideal…
The pre-equilibrium evolution of a quark-gluon plasma produced in a heavy-ion collision is studied in the framework of kinetic theory. We discuss the approach to local thermal equilibrium, and the onset of hydrodynamics, in terms of a particular set of moments of the distribution function. These moments quantify the momentum anisotropies to a finer degree than the commonly used ratio of longitudinal to transverse pressures. They are found to be in direct correspondence with viscous corrections of hydrodynamics, and provide therefore an alternative measure of these corrections in terms of the d…
To integrate hydrodynamic fluctuations, namely thermal fluctuations of hydrodynamics, into dynamical models of high-energy nuclear collisions based on relativistic hydrodynamics, the property of the hydrodynamic fluctuations given by the fluctuation-dissipation relation should be carefully investigated. The fluctuation-dissipation relation for causal dissipative hydrodynamics with the finite relaxation time is naturally given in the integral form of the constitutive equation by the linear-response theory. While, the differential form of the constitutive equation is commonly used in analytic in…
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we compute analytically the late-time behavior of two-point functions, Wilson loops and entanglement entropy in a strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills plasma undergoing a boost-invariant expansion. We take into account the effects of first order dissipative hydrodynamics and investigate the effects of the (time-dependent) shear viscosity on the various observables. The two-point functions decay exponentially at late times and are unaffected by the viscosity if the points are separated along the transverse directions. For longitudinal separation we…
In high energy collisions of heavy-ions, experimental findings of collective flow are customarily associated with the presence of a thermalized medium expanding according to the laws of hydrodynamics. Recently, the ATLAS, CMS and ALICE experiments found signals of the same type and magnitude in ultrarelativistic proton-proton collisions. In this study, the state-of-the-art hydrodynamic model SONIC is used to simulate the systems created in p+p collisions. By varying the size of the second-order transport coefficients, the range of applicability of hydrodynamics itself to the systems created in…
We present some exact solutions of relativistic second-order hydrodynamic equations in theories with conformal symmetry. Starting from a spherically expanding solution in ideal hydrodynamics, we take into account general conformal second-order corrections, and construct, for the first time, fully analytical axisymmetric exact solutions including the case with nonzero vorticity. These solutions are time-reversible despite having a nonvanishing shear stress tensor and provide a useful quantitative measure of the second-order effects in relativistic hydrodynamics.
We derive the general analytical solution of the viscous hydrodynamic equations for an ultrarelativistic gas of hard spheres undergoing Bjorken expansion, taking into account effects from particle number conservation, and use it to analytically determine its attractor at late times. Differently than all the cases considered before involving rapidly expanding fluids, in this example the gradient expansion converges. We exactly determine the hydrodynamic attractor of this system when its microscopic dynamics is modeled by the Boltzmann equation with a fully nonlinear collision kernel. The exact …
Numerical simulations of expanding plasma based on the AdS/CFT correspondence as well as kinetic theory and hydrodynamic models strongly suggest that some observables exhibit universal behaviour even when the system is not close to local equilibrium. This leading behaviour is expected to be corrected by transient, exponentially decaying contributions which carry information about the initial state. Focusing on late times, when the system is already in the hydrodynamic regime, we analyse numerical solutions describing expanding plasma of strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and…
A new family of simple, analytic solutions of self-similarly expanding fireballs is found for systems with ellipsoidal symmetry and a direction dependent, generalized Hubble flow. Gaussian, shell like or oscillating density profiles emerge for simple choices of an arbitrary scaling function. New, cylindrically or spherically symmetric as well as approximately one dimensional hydrodynamical solutions are obtained for various special choices of the initial conditions.
We find the general analytical solution of the viscous relativistic hydrodynamic equations (in the absence of bulk viscosity and chemical potential) for a Bjorken expanding fluid with a constant shear viscosity relaxation time. We analytically determine the hydrodynamic attractor of this fluid and discuss its properties. We show for the first time that the slow-roll expansion, a commonly used approach to characterize the attractor, diverges. This is shown to hold also in a conformal plasma. The gradient expansion is found to converge in an example where causality and stability are violated.
We consider a gravity dual description of time dependent, strongly interacting large-Nc N=4 SYM. We regard the gauge theory system as a fluid with shear viscosity. Our fluid is expanding in one direction following the Bjorken's picture that is relevant to RHIC experiments. We obtain the dual geometry at the late time that is consistent with dissipative hydrodynamics. We show that the integration constants that cannot be determined by hydrodynamics are given by looking at the horizon of the dual geometry. Relationship between time dependence of the energy density and bulk singularity is also di…
The momentum distribution of particle production in heavy-ion collisions encodes information about thermalization processes in the early-stage quark-gluon plasma. We use kinetic theory to study the far-from-equilibrium evolution of an expanding plasma with an anisotropic momentum-space distribution. We identify slow and fast degrees of freedom in the far-from-equilibrium plasma from the evolution of moments of this distribution. At late times, the slow modes correspond to hydrodynamic degrees of freedom and are naturally gapped from the fast modes by the inverse of the relaxation time, $τ_R^{-…
EPOS3-Jet is an integrated framework for jet modelling in heavy ion collisions, where the initial hard (jet) partons are produced along with soft (medium) partons in the initial state EPOS approach. The jet partons then propagate in the hydrodynamically expanding medium. The energy and momentum lost by the jet partons is added to the hydrodynamic medium via the source terms. The full evolution proceeds in a concurrent mode, without separating hydrodynamic and jet parts. In this report, we examine the medium recoil effects in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV LHC energy in the EP…
We consider an expanding boost-invariant plasma at strong coupling using the AdS/CFT correspondence for N=4 SYM. We determine the relaxation time in second order viscous hydrodynamics and find that it is around thirty times shorter than weak coupling expectations. We find that the nonsingularity of the dual geometry in the string frame necessitates turning on the dilaton which leads to a nonvanishing expectation value for tr F^2 behaving like tau^(-10/3).
The strongly interacting Quark-Gluon-Plasma (sQGP) created in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions, can be described by hydrodynamic models. Low energy hadrons are created after the so called freeze-out of this medium, thus their distributions reveal information about the final state of the sQGP. Photons are created throughout the evolution, so their distributions carry information on the whole expansion and cool down. We show results from an analytic, 1+3 dimensional perfect relativistic hydrodynamic solution, and compare hadron and photon observables to RHIC data. We extract an average eq…
We develop the relativistic theory of hydrodynamic fluctuations for application to high energy heavy ion collisions. In particular, we investigate their effect on the expanding boost-invariant (Bjorken) solution of the hydrodynamic equations. We discover that correlations over a long rapidity range are induced by the propagation of the sound modes. Due to the expansion, the dispersion law for these modes is non-linear and attenuated even in the limit of zero viscosity. As a result, there is a non-dissipative wake behind the sound front which is generated by any instantaneous point-like fluctua…
We study an exact rotating and expanding solution of the fluid dynamical model of heavy ion reactions, that take into account the rate of slowing down of the rotation due to the longitudinal and transverse expansion of the system. The parameters of the model are set on the basis of realistic 3+1D fluid dynamical calculation at TeV energies, where the rotation is enhanced by the build up of the Kelvin Helmholtz Instability in the flow.
Hadron spectra and elliptic flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are studied in event-by-event (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic simulations with fluctuating initial conditions given by the AMPT Monte Carlo model. Both the coherent soft gluon production from wounded nucleons and incoherent mini-jet production in semi-hard parton scatterings are considered. These partons take part in parton cascade and are assumed to be locally thermalized. They provide the fluctuating initial conditions for hydrodynamic simulations with a Gaussian smearing. Effects of both transverse and longitudinal fluctuations…
Evolution of spatially anisotropic perturbation created in the system formed after Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions has been studied. The microscopic evolution of the fluctuations has been examined within the ambit of Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE) in a hydrodynamically expanding background. The expansion of the background composed of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is treated within the framework of relativistic hydrodynamics. Spatial anisotropic fluctuations with different geometry have been evolved through Boltzmann equation. It is observed that the trace of such fluctuation survive the evolu…
We use the relativistic perfect-fluid hydrodynamics to describe the space-time evolution of dense baryonic matter produced in the central nucleus-nucleus collisions at HIRFL-CSR, HIAF, FAIR-CBM, NICA-MPD, and RHIC-BES. The transverse flow of the fireball with cylindrical symmetry and boost invariant along the longitudinal direction is also analyzed. Based on the relativistic kinetic theory, we also present the first preliminary calculation on the production of low-mass dileptons and low-pT photons can be considered as the signals of the dense baryonic matter produced in the central Au-Au and U…
New, analytic solutions of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics are presented, describing expanding fireballs with Hubble-like velocity profile and ellipsoidal symmetry, similar to fireballs created in heavy ion collisions. We find that with these specifications, one obtains solutions where the shear viscosity essentially does not influence the time evolution of the system, thus these solutions are particularly adept tools to study the effect of bulk viscosity alone, which always results in a slower decrease of energy density as well as temperature compared to the case of perfect fluid. We inves…
A new method for evaluating spectra and correlations in the hydrodynamic approach is proposed. It is based on an analysis of Boltzmann equations (BE) in terms of probabilities for constituent particles to escape from the interacting system. The conditions of applicability of Cooper-Frye freeze-out prescription are considered within the method. The results are illustrated with a non-relativistic exact solution of BE for expanding spherical fireball as well as with approximate solutions for ellipsoidally expanding ones.
In this paper we obtain an analytical solution of the relativistic Boltzmann equation under the relaxation time approximation that describes the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a radially expanding massless gas. This solution is found by mapping this expanding system in flat spacetime to a static flow in the curved spacetime $\mathrm{AdS}_{2}\otimes \mathrm{S}_{2}$. We further derive explicit analytic expressions for the momentum dependence of the single particle distribution function as well as for the spatial dependence of its moments. We find that this dissipative system has the ability to f…
The Boltzmann equation is solved in the relaxation time approximation using a hierarchy of angular moments of the distribution function. Our solution is obtained for an azimuthally symmetric radially expanding boost-invariant conformal system that is undergoing Gubser flow. The solution of moments that we get after truncating the infinite set of equations at various orders is compared to the exact kinetic solution. The dynamics of transition is described by the presence of fixed points which describes the evolution of the system from an early time collisionless free streaming to the hydrodynam…
