Quark-gluon plasma's (QGP) properties at non-hydrodynamic and non-perturbative regimes remain largely unexplored. Here, we examine the response functions describing how a QGP-like plasma responds to initial energy-momentum disturbance in both static and Bjorken-expanding plasma at non-hydrodynamic gradient using the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation-time approximation (RTA). We show that the resulting response functions are remarkably similar in both static and expanding backgrounds at non-hydrodynamic gradients. While non-hydrodynamic response can not be described by the conventional first-order and second-order theories, its behavior is reasonably captured by the extended version of hydrodynamics proposed by us (arXiv: 2208.01046). The potential sensitivity of the Euclidean correlator to non-hydrodynamic response is also illustrated.
We compute the radius of convergence of the linearized relativistic hydrodynamic expansion around a non-trivially rotating strongly coupled N=4 Super-Yang-Mills plasma. Our results show that the validity of hydrodynamics is sustained and can even get enhanced in a highly vortical quark-gluon plasma, such as the one produced in heavy-ion collisions. The hydrodynamic dispersion relations are computed using a rotating background that is an analytic solution of the ideal hydrodynamic equations of motion with non-vanishing angular momentum and large vorticity gradients, giving rise to a particular …
In this talk I will describe various features of time dependent dynamics of strongly coupled plasma from the perspective of the AdS/CFT correspondence. I will take as an example boost invariant plasma flow and concentrate on the properties of hydrodynamic expansion, thermalization versus hydrodynamization and some features of nonequilibrium behaviour.
We provide a short review of the hydrodynamical properties of a class of strongly coupled thermal gauge theories, coupled to massless fundamental flavor fields, having a dual supergravity description. The analysis is valid for more general classes of nearly conformal holographic plasmas, where the breaking of conformality is driven by marginally (ir)relevant deformations.
We study causal hydrodynamics (Israel-Stewart theory) of gauge theory plasmas from the AdS/CFT duality. Causal hydrodynamics requires new transport coefficients (relaxation times) and we compute them for a number of supersymmetric gauge theories including the N=4 SYM. However, the relaxation times obtained from the "shear mode" do not agree with the ones from the "sound mode," which implies that the Israel-Stewart theory is not a sufficient framework to describe the gauge theory plasmas.
By making use of a covariant formulation of the chiral kinetic theory in the relaxation-time approximation, we derive the first-order dissipative hydrodynamics equations for a charged chiral plasma with background electromagnetic fields. We identify the global equilibrium state for a rotating chiral plasma confined to a cylindrical region with realistic boundary conditions. Then, by using linearized hydrodynamic equations, supplemented by the Maxwell equations, we study hydrodynamic modes of magnetized rotating chiral plasma in the regimes of high temperature and high density. We find that, in…
We provide a generalized formulation of fluctuating hydrodynamics for the far-from-equilibrium noisy medium. As an example, we consider a noisy plasma experiencing Bjorken expansion, for which the leading order evolution is captured by hydrodynamic attractor of classical hydrodynamics, while the quadratic couplings of fluctuations are solved effectively via a generalized version of the hydrodynamic kinetic equation. In the far-from-equilibrium plasma, backreaction of hydrodynamic fluctuations results in renormalization of transport properties, as well as long time tails, of high orders. In par…
There is mounting evidence suggesting that relativistic hydrodynamics becomes relevant for the physics of quark-gluon plasma as the result of nonhydrodynamic modes decaying to an attractor apparent even when the system is far from local equilibrium. Here we determine this attractor for Bjorken flow in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory using Borel summation of the gradient expansion of the expectation value of the energy momentum tensor. By comparing the result to numerical simulations of the flow based on the AdS/CFT correspondence we show that it provides an accurate and unambiguous approx…
The stress-energy tensor of a quark moving through a strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma is evaluated using gauge/string duality. The accuracy with which the resulting wake, in position space, is reproduced by hydrodynamics is examined. Remarkable agreement is found between hydrodynamics and the complete result down to distances less than 2/T away from the quark. In performing the gravitational analysis, we use a relatively simple formulation of the bulk to boundary problem in which the linearized Einstein field equations are fully decoupled. Our analysis easily generalizes t…
Relativistic hydrodynamics simulations of quark-gluon plasma play a pivotal role in our understanding of heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. They are based on a phenomenological description due to Mueller, Israel, Stewart (MIS) and others, which incorporates viscous effects and ensures a well-posed initial value problem. Focusing on the case of conformal plasma we propose a generalization which includes, in addition, the dynamics of the least damped far-from-equilibrium degree of freedom found in strongly coupled plasmas through the AdS/CFT correspondence. We formulate new evolution equation…
A novel description of kinetic theory dynamics is proposed in terms of resummed moments that embed information of both hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic modes. The resulting expansion can be used to extend hydrodynamics to higher orders in a consistent and numerically efficient way; at lowest order it reduces to an Israel-Stewart-like theory. This formalism is especially suited to investigate the general problem of particles interacting with fields. We tested the accuracy of this approach against the exact solution of the coupled Boltzmann-Vlasov-Maxwell equations for a plasma in an electromag…
We generalize a previously known class of exact analytic solutions of relativistic perfect fluid hydrodynamics for the first time to arbitrary temperature-dependent Equation of State. We investigate special cases of this class of solutions, in particular, we present hydrodynamical solutions with the Equation of State determined from lattice QCD calculations. We discuss the phenomenological relevance of these solutions as well.
In this paper we obtain holographic formulas for the transport coefficients $κ$ and $τ_π$ present in the second-order derivative expansion of relativistic hydrodynamics in curved spacetime associated with a non-conformal strongly coupled plasma described holographically by an Einstein+Scalar action in the bulk. We compute these coefficients as functions of the temperature in a bottom-up non-conformal model that is tuned to reproduce lattice QCD thermodynamics at zero baryon chemical potential. We directly compute, besides the speed of sound, 6 other transport coefficients that appear at second…
We consider the experimental implications of the axial current triangle diagram anomaly in a hydrodynamic description of high density QCD. We propose a signal of an enhanced production of spin-excited hadrons in the direction of the rotation axis in off-central heavy ion collisions.
We consider the evolution of a spherically symmetric Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) drop with limited size in the framework of relativistic hydrodynamics. In the presence of the boundary, the expanding and cooling of QGP drop may appear as oscillating processes, which realize via multiple traveling of rarefaction and compression waves through the plasma and lead to increasing of plasma life-time. Within this picture, deflagration is the main possible way of hadronization. The slow cooling mechanism also leads to a significant enhancement of photon yield in comparison with Bjorken scenario.
We compute the longitudinal hydrodynamic flow in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5500 GeV by using boost non-invariant initial conditions following from perturbative QCD. The transfer of entropy and energy from the central region to larger rapidities caused by boost non-invariance is determined and the associated decrease in the lifetime of the system is estimated.
Dilepton production from the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is computed using the leading-order (3+1)-dimensional anisotropic hydrodynamics. It is shown that high-energy dilepton spectrum is sensitive to the initial local-rest-frame momentum-space anisotropy of the QGP. Our findings suggest that it may be possible to constrain the early-time momentum-space anisotropy in relativistic heavy-ion collisions using high-energy dilepton yields.
We study the mechanism responsible for the onset of instabilities in a chiral phase transition at nonzero temperature and baryon chemical potential. As a low-energy effective model, we consider an expanding relativistic plasma of quarks coupled to a chiral field, and obtain a phenomenological chiral hydrodynamics from a variational principle. Studying the dispersion relation for small fluctuations around equilibrium, we identify the role played by chiral waves and pressure waves in the generation of instabilities. We show that pressure modes become unstable earlier than chiral modes.
We utilize the fluid-gravity duality to investigate the large order behavior of hydrodynamic gradient expansion of the dynamics of a gauge theory plasma system. This corresponds to the inclusion of dissipative terms and transport coefficients of very high order. Using the dual gravity description, we calculate numerically the form of the stress tensor for a boost-invariant flow in a hydrodynamic expansion up to terms with 240 derivatives. We observe a factorial growth of gradient contributions at large orders, which indicates a zero radius of convergence of the hydrodynamic series. Furthermore…
Recently we have reported the correct formulation of the lattice QCD method at the zero temperature to study the hadron formation from the quarks and gluons by incorporating the non-zero boundary surface term in QCD which arises due to the confinement of quarks and gluons inside the finite size hadron. In this paper we extend this to the finite temperature QCD and present the correct formulation of the lattice QCD method at the finite temperature to study the hadron formation from the quark-gluon plasma.
We compute dilepton production from the deconfined phase of the quark-gluon plasma using leading-order (3+1)-dimensional anisotropic hydrodynamics. The anisotropic hydrodynamics equa- tions employed describe the full spatiotemporal evolution of the transverse temperature, spheroidal momentum-space anisotropy parameter, and the associated three-dimensional collective flow of the matter. The momentum-space anisotropy is also taken into account in the computation of the dilepton production rate, allowing for a self-consistent description of dilepton production from the quark-gluon plasma. For our…
We derive an expression for the heavy quark damping rate in hot quark gluon plasma in presence of flow. Here all the bath particles here are out of equilibrium due to the existence of non-zero velocity gradient. The magnetic sector shows similar infrared divergences even after hard thermal loop corrections as one encounters in case of non-viscous plasma. We estimate the first order correction in ($η/s$) for heavy quark damping rate due to the non-zero viscosity of the QCD plasma.
QCD plasma instabilities appear to play an important role in the equilibration of quark-gluon plasmas in heavy-ion collisions in the theoretical limit of weak coupling (i.e. asymptotically high energy). It is important to understand what non-linear physics eventually stops the exponential growth of unstable modes. It is already known that the initial growth of plasma instabilities in QCD closely parallels that in QED. However, once the unstable modes of the gauge-fields grow large enough for non-Abelian interactions between them to become important, one might guess that the dynamics of QCD pla…
By making use of the chiral kinetic theory in the relaxation-time approximation, we derive an Israel-Stewart type formulation of the hydrodynamic equations for a chiral relativistic plasma made of neutral particles (e.g., neutrinos). The effects of chiral asymmetry are captured by including an additional continuity equation for the axial charge, as well as the leading-order quantum corrections due to the spin of particles. In a formulation of the chiral kinetic theory used, we introduce a symmetric form of the energy-momentum tensor that is suitable for the description of a weakly nonuniform c…
We investigate the compression of nuclear matter in relativistic hydrodynamics. Nuclear matter is described by a $σ-ω$--type model for the hadron matter phase and by the MIT bag model for the quark--gluon plasma, with a first order phase transition between both phases. In the presence of phase transitions, hydrodynamical solutions change qualitatively, for instance, one-dimensional stationary compression is no longer accomplished by a single shock but via a sequence of shock and compressional simple waves. We construct the analytical solution to the ``slab-on-slab'' collision problem over a ra…
QCD plasma instabilities, caused by an anisotropic momentum distributions of the particles in the plasma, are likely to play an important role in thermalization in heavy ion collisions. We consider plasmas with two different components of particles, one strongly anisotropic and one isotropic or nearly isotropic. The isotropic component does not eliminate instabilities but it decreases their growth rates. We investigate the impact of plasma instabilities on the first stage of the ``bottom-up'' thermalization scenario in which such a two-component plasma emerges, and find that even in the case o…
We compute the hydrodynamic relaxation times $τ_π$ and $τ_j$ for hot QCD at next-to-leading order in the coupling with kinetic theory. We show that certain dimensionless ratios of second-order to first-order transport coefficients obey bounds which apply whenever a kinetic theory description is possible; the computed values lie somewhat above these bounds. Strongly coupled theories with holographic duals strongly violate these bounds, highlighting their distance from a quasiparticle description.
We report the continuum limits of the speed of sound, c_s, and the specific heat at constant volume, c_v, in quenched QCD at temperatures of 2Tc and 3Tc. At these temperatures, c_s is within 2-sigma of the ideal gas value, whereas c_v differs significantly from the ideal gas. However, both are compatible with results expected in a theory with conformal symmetry. We investigate effective measures of conformal symmetry in the high temperature phase of QCD.
High-energy nuclear collisions produce a nonequilibrium plasma of quarks and gluons which thermalizes and exhibits hydrodynamic flow. There are currently no practical frameworks to connect the early particle production in classical field simulations to the subsequent hydrodynamic evolution. We build such a framework using nonequilibrium Green's functions, calculated in QCD kinetic theory, to propagate the initial energy-momentum tensor to the hydrodynamic phase. We demonstrate that this approach can be easily incorporated into existing hydrodynamic simulations, leading to stronger constraints …
It is pointed out that the size of the interaction region, as determined from HBT analyses, is increased due to the transition time necessary the convert the quarks and gluons into hadrons. A rough estimate yields an increase of R_HBT by about 15%.
A Lagrangian density for viscous quark-gluon plasma has been constructed within the fluid-like QCD framework. Gauge symmetry is preserved for all terms inside the Lagrangian, except for the viscous term. The transition mechanism from point particle field to fluid field, and vice versa, is discussed. The energy momentum tensor that is relevant for the gluonic plasma having the nature of fluid bulk of gluon sea is derived within the model. By imposing conservation law in the energy momentum tensor, shear viscosity appears as extractable from the equation.
Prescaling is a far-from-equilibrium phenomenon which describes the rapid establishment of a universal scaling form of distributions much before the universal values of their scaling exponents are realized. We consider the example of the spatio-temporal evolution of the quark-gluon plasma explored in heavy-ion collisions at sufficiently high energies. Solving QCD kinetic theory with elastic and inelastic processes, we demonstrate that the gluon and quark distributions very quickly adapt a self-similar scaling form, which is independent of initial condition details and system parameters. The dy…
We study the role of QCD plasma instabilities in non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasmas. First, we argue that such instabilities must drastically modify the "bottom-up" thermalization scenario for heavy-ion collisions. Second, we discuss conditions for the existence of instabilities in a more general context than previously treated in the QCD literature. We also give a thorough qualitative review of the origin of instabilities. We discuss some mechanisms whereby the growth of plasma instabilities saturates. Finally, we solve explicitly for instabilities and their growth rates for two extreme case…
We determine viscosity corrections to the retarded, advanced and symmetric gluon self energies and to the static propagator in the weak-coupling "hard loop" approximation to high-temperature QCD. We apply these results to calculate the imaginary part of the heavy-quark potential which is found to be smaller (in magnitude) than at vanishing viscosity. This implies a smaller decay width of quarkonium bound states in an anisotropic plasma.
It is shown that in ideal relativistic hydrodynamics a phase transition from hadron to quark and gluon degrees of freedom in the nuclear matter equation of state leads to a minimum in the excitation function of the transverse collective flow.
We present real-time lattice simulation results for nonequilibrium quark production from an over-occupied gluon plasma in longitudinally expanding geometry. The quark number density per unit transverse area and rapidity shows almost linear growth in time, and its growth rate appears to be consistent with a simple kinetic theory estimate involving only two-to-two scattering processes in small-angle approximation. We also find that quarks produced at early times satisfy a nonequilibrium scaling law.
We employ a non-equilibrium Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) kinetic description to study the kinetic and chemical equilibration of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) at weak coupling. Based on our numerical framework, which explicitly includes all leading order processes involving light flavor degrees of freedom, we investigate the thermalization process of homogeneous and isotropic plasmas far-from equilibrium and determine the relevant time scales for kinetic and chemical equilibration. We further simulate the longitudinally expanding pre-equilibrium plasma created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion coll…
We present the derivation of heavy quark energy loss in a viscous QCD plasma using kinetic theory. Shear flow changes both boson and fermion distribution functions which eventually modify heavy quark energy loss. Due to presence of non-zero flow gradient in the medium all the bath particles here are out of equilibrium. In these types of plasmas we show that without plasma screening effects heavy quark energy loss suffers similar type of infrared divergence as one encounters in non-viscous plasma. The screening effects are incorporated consistently through Hard Thermal Loop resummation perturba…
We compute the initial energy densities produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions from NLO perturbative QCD using a saturation conjecture to control soft particle production, and describe the subsequent space-time evolution of the system with hydrodynamics, event by event. The resulting centrality dependence of the low-$p_T$ observables from this pQCD + saturation + hydro ("EKRT") framework are then compared simultaneously to the LHC and RHIC measurements. With such an analysis we can test the initial state calculation, and constrain the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity-t…
The equilibrium thermodynamic properties of the SU(N) plasma at finite temperature are studied non-perturbatively in the large-N limit, via lattice simulations. We present high-precision numerical results for the pressure, trace of the energy-momentum tensor, energy density and entropy density of SU(N) Yang-Mills theories with N=3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 colors, in a temperature range from 0.8T_c to 3.4T_c (where T_c denotes the critical deconfinement temperature). The results, normalized according to the number of gluons, show a very mild dependence on N, supporting the idea that the dynamics of the s…
We study the response function which describes the evolution of energy density induced by an initial disturbance for a Bjorken-expanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We compare the results from solving linearized Boltzmann equation under the relaxation time approximation with those from viscous hydrodynamics. While in long time limit the response becomes hydrodynamics, the non-hydrodynamic response is important at intermediate times when excitations of wavelength larger than the inverse of the relaxation time $1/τ_{R}$ are not fully damped. Therefore observables sensitive to the jet-induced mediu…
We investigate the medium induced fragmentation of jets in a high-temperature QCD plasma. Based on an effective kinetic theory of QCD, we study the non-equilibrium evolution of the jet shower and the chemical equilibration of jet fragments in the medium. By including radiative emissions as well as elastic interactions, our approach extends all the way from the jet energy scale to the temperature of the medium and includes important effects such as the recoil of the medium. We present results for the in-medium fragmentation, including chemical and kinetic equilibration of the soft fragments and…
The pre-equilibrium evolution of a quark-gluon plasma produced in a heavy-ion collision is studied in the framework of kinetic theory. We discuss the approach to local thermal equilibrium, and the onset of hydrodynamics, in terms of a particular set of moments of the distribution function. These moments quantify the momentum anisotropies to a finer degree than the commonly used ratio of longitudinal to transverse pressures. They are found to be in direct correspondence with viscous corrections of hydrodynamics, and provide therefore an alternative measure of these corrections in terms of the d…
Using holographic duality, we present results for both head-on and off-center collisions of Gaussian shock waves in strongly coupled $\mathcal N = 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The shock waves superficially resemble Lorentz contracted colliding protons. The collisions results in the formation of a plasma whose evolution is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. The size of the produced droplet is $R \sim 1/T_{\rm eff}$ where $T_{\rm eff}$ is the effective temperature, which is the characteristic microscopic scale in strongly coupled plasma. These results demonstrate the applicability …
Thermal (Th-)QCD properties appear to disagree with lattice (L-)QCD results, which suggests that Th-QCD does not have a valid perturbative expansion. However, we reproduce L-QCD using the first order $α_s$ corrections in Th-QCD.
The drag and diffusion coefficients are studied within the framework of Fokker-Planck dynamics for the case of a charm quark propagating in an expanding quark-gluon plasma. The space-time evolution of the nuclear matter created in the relativistic heavy-ion collision is modelled using MUSIC, a 3+1 D relativistic viscous hydrodynamic approach. The effect of viscous corrections to the heavy quark transport coefficients is explored by considering scattering processes with thermal quarks and gluons in the medium. It is observed that the momentum diffusion of the heavy quarks is sensitive to the sh…
We analyze the behavior of (net-)proton number cumulants in central collisions of heavy ions across a broad collision energy range by utilizing hydrodynamic simulations. The calculations incorporate essential non-critical contributions to proton fluctuations such as repulsive baryonic core and exact baryon number conservation. The experimental data are consistent with non-critical physics at collision energies $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} \geq 20$ GeV. The data from STAR and HADES Collaborations at lower collision energies indicate an excess of (multi-)proton correlations over the non-critical reference…
We consider quarkonium in a hot QCD plasma which, due to expansion and non-zero viscosity, exhibits a local anisotropy in momentum space. At short distances the heavy-quark potential is known at tree level from the hard-thermal loop resummed gluon propagator in anisotropic perturbative QCD. The potential at long distances is modeled as a QCD string which is screened at the same scale as the Coulomb field. At asymptotic separation the potential energy is non-zero and inversely proportional to the temperature. We obtain numerical solutions of the three-dimensional Schroedinger equation for this …
Finding the existence and the location of the QCD critical point is one of the main goals of the RHIC beam energy scan program. To make theoretical predictions and corroborate with the experimental data requires modeling the space-time evolution of the matter created in heavy-ion collisions by dynamical models such as the relativistic hydrodynamics with an appropriate Equation of State (EoS). In the present exploratory study, we use a viscous 2+1 dimensional event-by-event (e-by-e) hydrodynamic code at finite baryon densities with two different EoSs (i) Lattice QCD + HRG with a crossover trans…
The quark-gluon plasma behaves as a relativistic viscous fluid in high-energy heavy ion collisions. I develop a causal dissipative hydrodynamic model at finite baryon density for RHIC and LHC to estimate the net baryon rapidity distribution. The net baryon number is found to be carried to forward rapidity by the flow, effectively enhancing the transparency of the collisions. This suggests that the energy available for the production of a hot medium could be larger than that naively implied from experimental data. Also the distribution can be sensitive to baryon dissipation as much as to shear …
The electrical conductivity in the hot phase of the QCD plasma is extracted from a quenched lattice measurement of the Euclidean time vector correlator for 1.5 < T/T_c < 3. The spectral density in the vicinity of the origin is examined using a method specially adapted to this region, and a peak at small energies is seen. The continuum limit of the electrical conductivity, and the closely related soft photon emissivity of the QCD plasma, are then extracted from a fit to the Fourier transform of the temporal vector correlator.
The quark-gluon plasma in stellar structure is investigated using the fluid-like QCD approach. The classical energy momentum tensor relevant for high energy and hot plasma having the nature of fluid bulk of gluon sea is calculated within the model. The transition of gluon field from point particle field inside stable hadrons to relativistic fluid field in hot plasma and vice versa is briefly discussed. The results are applied to construct the equation of state using the Tolman--Oppenheimer--Volkoff equation to describe the hot plasma dominated stellar structure.
We explore the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma at zero and finite net-baryon density based on an effective kinetic theory of Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD). By investigating the isotropization of the longitudinal pressure, we determine the relevant time and temperature scales for the onset of viscous hydrodynamics, and quantify the dependence on the chemical composition of the QGP. By extrapolating our results to realistic coupling strength, we discuss phenomenological consequences regarding the role of the pre-equilibrium phase at different collision energies.
We derive the expression for the collisional energy loss in two stream plasma induced by the fluctuating chromoelectric field. It is revealed that the main contribution here comes from the unstable modes which grow exponentially with time. A strong direction dependence of the energy loss has also been demonstrated.
We exploit a recent non-perturbative determination of the momentum broadening kernel $C(b_{\bot})$ in impact parameter space \cite{Moore:2021jwe}, to determine the momentum space broadening kernel $C(q_{\bot})$ in high-temperature QCD plasmas. We show how to use the non-pertubatively determined kernel $C(q_{\bot})$ to compute the medium-induced splitting rates in a QCD plasma of finite size. We compare the resulting in-medium splitting rates to the results obtained with leading-order and next-to-leading order perturbative determinations of $C(q_{\bot})$, as well as with various approximations …
