The Boltzmann equation is solved in the relaxation time approximation using a hierarchy of angular moments of the distribution function. Our solution is obtained for an azimuthally symmetric radially expanding boost-invariant conformal system that is undergoing Gubser flow. The solution of moments that we get after truncating the infinite set of equations at various orders is compared to the exact kinetic solution. The dynamics of transition is described by the presence of fixed points which describes the evolution of the system from an early time collisionless free streaming to the hydrodynamic regime at intermediate times and back to free streaming at late times. The attractor solution is found for various orders of moments as an interpolation between these fixed points. The relation of moments to various approximations of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics is investigated.
We obtain general analytical solutions of third-order viscous hydrodynamic equations for Bjorken and Gubser flows in systems with vanishing bulk viscosity and chemical potential, and having a constant shear relaxation time. We also analytically characterize and determine the hydrodynamic attractors for such systems by studying the universal behavior of these solutions at both early and late times. Finally we study the properties of these hydrodynamic attractors for transport coefficients obtained from relativistic kinetic theory in the relaxation-time approximation.
The dynamical scaling behavior of hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic moments of the distribution function is studied using third-order Chapman-Enskog hydrodynamics and anisotropic hydrodynamics for systems undergoing Bjorken and Gubser expansions, where exact solutions of the Boltzmann equation in Relaxation Time Approximation (RTA) are available for comparison. While dimensionless quantities like normalized shear, pressure anisotropy and normalized entropy show at late times universal scaling relations with small (large) Knudsen number for Bjorken (Gubser) flows, dimensionful quantities like t…
We study the evolution of hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic moments of the distribution function using anisotropic and third-order Chapman-Enskog hydrodynamics for systems undergoing Bjorken and Gubser flows. The hydrodynamic results are compared with the exact solution of the Boltzmann equation with a collision term in relaxation time approximation. While the evolution of the hydrodynamic moments of the distribution function (i.e. of the energy momentum tensor) can be described with high accuracy by both hydrodynamic approximation schemes, their description of the evolution of the entropy of …

Perturbative expansions, such as the well-known gradient series and the recently proposed slow-roll expansion, have been recently used to investigate the emergence of hydrodynamic behavior in systems undergoing Bjorken flow. In this paper we determine for the first time the large order behavior of these perturbative expansions in relativistic hydrodynamics in the case of Gubser flow. While both series diverge, the slow-roll series can provide a much better overall description of the system's dynamics than the gradient expansion when both series are truncated at low orders. The truncated slow-r…
In this work we describe the dynamics of a highly anisotropic system undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal and azimuthally symmetric radial expansion (Gubser flow) for arbitrary shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. We derive the equations of motion of dissipative anisotropic hydrodynamics by applying to this situation the moments method recently derived by Molnár et al. (MNR) [1,2], based on an expansion around an arbitrary anisotropic one-particle distribution function. One requires an additional evolution equation in order to close the conservation laws. This is achieved by selecting …
The non-equilibrium attractors of systems undergoing Gubser flow within relativistic kinetic theory are studied. In doing so we employ well-established methods of nonlinear dynamical systems which rely on finding the fixed points, investigating the structure of the flow diagrams of the evolution equations, and characterizing the basin of attraction using a Lyapunov function near the stable fixed points. We obtain the attractors of anisotropic hydrodynamics, Israel-Stewart (IS) and transient fluid (DNMR) theories and show that they are indeed non-planar and the basin of attraction is essentiall…
In this proceedings contribution, we review the exact solution of the anisotropic hydrodynamics equations for a system subject to Gubser flow. For this purpose, we use the leading-order anisotropic hydrodynamics equations which assume that the distribution function is ellipsoidally symmetric in local-rest-frame momentum. We then prove that the SO(3)_q symmetry in de Sitter space constrains the anisotropy tensor to be of spheroidal form with only one independent anisotropy parameter remaining. As a consequence, the exact solution reduces to the problem of solving two coupled non-linear differen…
We derive the equations of motion for a system undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal and azimuthally-symmetric transverse "Gubser flow" using leading-order anisotropic hydrodynamics. This is accomplished by assuming that the one-particle distribution function is ellipsoidally-symmetric in the momenta conjugate to the de Sitter coordinates used to parameterize the Gubser flow. We then demonstrate that the SO(3)_q symmetry in de Sitter space further constrains the anisotropy tensor to be of spheroidal form. The resulting system of two coupled ordinary differential equations for the de Sitter-s…
We have derived the analytic solutions of dissipative relativistic spin hydrodynamics with Gubser expansion. Following the standard strategy of deriving the solutions in a Gubser flow, we take the Weyl rescaling and obtain the energy-momentum and angular momentum conversation equations in the $dS_{3}\times\mathbb{R}$ space-time. We then derive the analytic solutions of spin density, spin potential and other thermodynamic in $dS_{3}\times\mathbb{R}$ space-time and transform them back into Minkowski space-time $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$. In the Minkowski space-time, the spin density and spin potential i…
Hydrodynamical noise is introduced on top of Gubser's analytical solution to viscous hydrodynamics. With respect to the ultra-central collision events of Pb-Pb, p-Pb and p-p at the LHC energies, we solve the evolution of noisy fluid systems and calculate the radial flow velocity correlations. We show that the absolute amplitude of the hydrodynamical noise is determined by the multiplicity of the collision event. The evolution of azimuthal anisotropies, which is related to the generation of harmonic flow, receives finite enhancements from hydrodynamical noise. Although it is strongest in the p-…
Exploring a variety of closing schemes to the infinite hierarchy of momentum moments of the exactly solvable Boltzmann equation for systems undergoing Gubser flow, we study the precision with which the resulting hydrodynamic equations reproduce the exact evolution of hydrodynamic moments of the distribution function. We find that anisotropic hydrodynamics, obtained by ex- panding the distribution function around a dynamically evolving locally anisotropic background whose evolution is matched to exactly reproduce the macroscopic pressure anisotropy caused by the different longitudinal and trans…
Evolution of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) near equilibrium can be described by the second-order relativistic viscous hydrodynamic equations. Consistent and analytically verifiable numerical solutions are critical for phenomenological studies of the collective behavior of QGP in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. A novel analytical solution based on the conformal Gubser flow which is a boost-invariant solution with transverse fluid velocity is presented. Due to the non-linear nature of the equation, the analytical solution is non-perturbative and exhibits features that are rather distinct from solut…
We use the dissipative type theory (DTT) framework to solve for the evolution of conformal fluids in Bjorken and Gubser flows from isotropic initial conditions. The results compare well with both exact and other hydrodynamic solutions in the literature. At the same time, DTTs enforce the Second Law of thermodynamics as an exact property of the formalism, at any order in deviations from equilibrium, and are easily generalizable to more complex situations.
In this work we introduce the generic conditions for the existence of a non-equilibrium attractor that is an invariant manifold determined by the long-wavelength modes of the physical system. We investigate the topological properties of the global flow structure of the Gubser flow for the Israel-Stewart theory and a kinetic model for the Boltzmann equation by employing Morse-Smale theory. We present a complete classification of the invariant submanifolds of the flow and determine all the possible flow lines connecting any pair of UV/IR fixed points. The formal transseries solutions to the Gubs…
We study the effects of expansion and viscous corrections on the hydrodynamical medium response to a high energy jet parton. More specifically, using a semi-analytical Gubser solution to relativistic fluid dynamics, modifications to the formed Mach cone, diffusive wake, and the momentum flow of the medium response along and perpendicular to the jet particle, are analyzed mode-by-mode. This should provide intuition and guidance for analyses of the experimentally measured jet sub-structure in heavy-ion collisions.
We investigate whether hydrodynamic attractors are present in simulations of the quark-gluon plasma formed in heavy-ion collisions. We argue that Lagrangian schemes to solve the relativistic viscous fluid equations can be particularly useful to characterize the properties of attractors in heavy ion collisions. Preliminary results are shown in Israel-Stewart theory to support such a claim. We also discuss how to perform the slow-roll expansion in Israel-Stewart theory undergoing a general flow, which naturally leads to the definition of a resummed shear viscosity coefficient that depends on the…
I summarize our recent work towards finding and utilizing analytic solutions of relativistic hydrodynamic. In the first part I discuss various exact solutions of the second-order conformal hydrodynamics. In the second part I compute flow harmonics $v_n$ analytically using the anisotropically deformed Gubser flow and discuss its dependence on $n$, $p_T$, viscosity, the chemical potential and the charge.
We analytically investigate hydrodynamic attractor solutions in both Müller-Israel-Stewart (MIS) and kinetic theories in a viscous fluid system undergoing a Hubble expansion with a fixed expansion rate. We show that the gradient expansion for the MIS theory and the Chapman-Enskog expansion for the Boltzmann equation within the relaxation time approximation are factorially divergent and obtain hydrodynamic attractor solutions by applying the Borel resummation technique to those asymptotic divergent series. In both theories, we find that the hydrodynamic attractor solutions are globally attracti…
We provide a generalized formulation of fluctuating hydrodynamics for the far-from-equilibrium noisy medium. As an example, we consider a noisy plasma experiencing Bjorken expansion, for which the leading order evolution is captured by hydrodynamic attractor of classical hydrodynamics, while the quadratic couplings of fluctuations are solved effectively via a generalized version of the hydrodynamic kinetic equation. In the far-from-equilibrium plasma, backreaction of hydrodynamic fluctuations results in renormalization of transport properties, as well as long time tails, of high orders. In par…
We derive the general analytical solution of the viscous hydrodynamic equations for an ultrarelativistic gas of hard spheres undergoing Bjorken expansion, taking into account effects from particle number conservation, and use it to analytically determine its attractor at late times. Differently than all the cases considered before involving rapidly expanding fluids, in this example the gradient expansion converges. We exactly determine the hydrodynamic attractor of this system when its microscopic dynamics is modeled by the Boltzmann equation with a fully nonlinear collision kernel. The exact …
Non-conformal attractor behavior is studied by solving non-conformal second order viscous hydrodynamics with respect to boost-invariant plasmas. Numerical solutions of the relative decay rate of the enthalpy density, the inverse shear and bulk Reynolds numbers, all exhibit universal patterns towards an ideal fluid description at late stages, demonstrating the existence of non-conformal hydrodynamic attractor. However, as a generic feature, the non-conformal hydrodynamic attractor emerges only at late times, which differs drastically from the behavior observed in conformal systems. The absence …
The power spectrum of heavy ion collisions is investigated by studying initial state fluctuations on top of a smooth hydrodynamic flow. In particular, the stability of the location of the first minimum of the power spectrum and the dependence of the hydrodynamic response v_n / epsilon_n on n and on eta / s are discussed. In our study we develop a new Green's function method for the analytic hydrodynamic flow by S. Gubser and make use of a fully non-linear hydrodynamics code. We find that there will be no well-defined first minimum of the response for n < 10, due to the fact that all minima in …
The quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions is not in local thermal equilibrium at early times. Despite this, dissipative hydrodynamics describes the evolution of the energy-momentum tensor quite well after only roughly 0.5 - 1 fm/c. This can be understood using the concept of a non-equilibrium dynamical attractor. The attractor is a uniquely identifiable solution to the dynamical equations to which all solutions are drawn as the system evolves. Once solutions collapse onto the non-equilibrium attractor they are ``pseudo-thermalized'' in the sense that they have lost information abo…
A review of the recent progress of relativistic hydrodynamic attractors is presented, with a focus on applications in heavy ion collisions and the quark gluon plasma. Pedagogical introductions to the effective descriptions relevant for attractors in high energy physics, namely hydrodynamics, holography and kinetic theory, are followed by highlights of some recent advances.
Standard textbooks will state that hydrodynamics requires near-equilibrium to be applicable. Recently, however, out-of-equilibrium attractor solutions for hydrodynamics have been found in kinetic theory and holography in systems with a high degree of symmetry, suggesting the possibility of a genuine out-of-equilibrium formulation of hydrodynamics. This work demonstrates that attractor solutions also occur in non-conformal kinetic theory and spatially non-homogeneous systems, potentially having important implications for the interpretation of experimental data in heavy-ion and proton-proton col…
We determine the dynamical attractors associated with anisotropic hydrodynamics (aHydro) and the DNMR equations for a 0+1d conformal system using kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation. We compare our results to the non-equilibrium attractor obtained from exact solution of the 0+1d conformal Boltzmann equation, Navier-Stokes theory, and second-order Mueller-Israel-Stewart theory. We demonstrate that the aHydro attractor equation resums an infinite number of terms in the inverse Reynolds number. The resulting resummed aHydro attractor possesses a positive longitudinal to transverse…
We use principal component analysis to study the hydrodynamic attractor in Yang-Mills kinetic theory undergoing the Bjorken expansion with Color Glass Condensate initial conditions. The late time hydrodynamic attractor is characterized by a single principal component determining the overall energy scale. How it is reached is governed by the disappearance of single subleading principal component characterizing deviations of the pressure anisotropy, the screening mass and the scattering rate. We find that for wide range of couplings the approach to the hydrodynamic attractor at late times is wel…
There is mounting evidence suggesting that relativistic hydrodynamics becomes relevant for the physics of quark-gluon plasma as the result of nonhydrodynamic modes decaying to an attractor apparent even when the system is far from local equilibrium. Here we determine this attractor for Bjorken flow in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory using Borel summation of the gradient expansion of the expectation value of the energy momentum tensor. By comparing the result to numerical simulations of the flow based on the AdS/CFT correspondence we show that it provides an accurate and unambiguous approx…
We find the general analytical solution of the viscous relativistic hydrodynamic equations (in the absence of bulk viscosity and chemical potential) for a Bjorken expanding fluid with a constant shear viscosity relaxation time. We analytically determine the hydrodynamic attractor of this fluid and discuss its properties. We show for the first time that the slow-roll expansion, a commonly used approach to characterize the attractor, diverges. This is shown to hold also in a conformal plasma. The gradient expansion is found to converge in an example where causality and stability are violated.
We study the far-off-equilibrium dynamics of a Bjorken expanding non-conformal system within kinetic theory and hydrodynamics. We show that, in contrast to the conformal case, neither shear nor bulk viscous pressure relax quickly to a non-equilibrium attractor. In kinetic theory an early-time, far-from-equilibrium attractor exists for the scaled longitudinal pressure, driven by the rapid longitudinal expansion of the medium. Second-order dissipative hydrodynamics fails to accurately describe this attractor, but a modified anisotropic hydrodynamic formulation reproduces it and provides excellen…
Study of thermal particle production is crucial to understand the space-time evolution of the fireball produced in high energy heavy-ion collisions. We consider thermal particle production within the framework of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics and employ recently obtained analytical solutions of higher-order viscous hydrodynamics with longitudinal Bjorken expansion to calculate the spectra of dileptons and photons. Using these analytical solutions, we constrain the allowed initial states by demanding positivity and reality of energy density throughout the evolution. Further, we compute the…
We present an exact solution of the relativistic Boltzmann equation for a system undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal and azimuthally symmetric transverse flow ("Gubser flow"). The resulting exact non-equilibrium dynamics is compared to 1st- and 2nd-order relativistic hydrodynamic approximations for various shear viscosity to entropy density ratios. This novel solution can be used to test the validity and accuracy of different hydrodynamic approximations in conditions similar to those generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.
We present an analytic solution of a simple set of equations that govern the expansion of boost-invariant plasmas of massless particles. These equations describe, approximately, the early time, collisionless regime, and the transition to hydrodynamics at late time. Their mathematical structure encompasses all versions of second order hydrodynamics when applied to Bjorken flows. The analytic solution provides an explicit expression for the attractor solution that connects the collisionless regime to hydrodynamics. It also constitutes a neat example of an application of the theory of resurgence …
Using and comparing kinetic theory and second-order Chapman-Enskog hydrodynamics, we study the non-conformal dynamics of a system undergoing Bjorken expansion. We use the concept of `free-streaming fixed lines' for scaled shear and bulk stresses in non-conformal kinetic theory and hydrodynamics, and show that these `fixed lines' behave as early-time attractors and repellors of the evolution. In the conformal limit, the free-streaming fixed lines reduce to the well-known fixed points of conformal Bjorken dynamics. A new fixed point in the free streaming regime is identified which lies at the in…
Based on a viscous hydrodynamic model with anisotropically perturbed Gubser flow and isothermal Cooper-Frye freezeout at early times, we analytically compute the flow harmonics $v_n(p_T)$ and study how they scale with the harmonic number $n$ and transverse momentum, as well as the system size, shear and bulk viscosity coefficients, and collision energy. In particular, we find that the magnitude of shear viscous corrections grows linearly with $n$. The mixing between different harmonics is also discussed. While this model is rather simple as compared to realistic heavy-ion collisions, we argue …

The nonequilibrium evolution in a boost-invariant Bjorken flow of a hybrid viscous fluid model containing two interacting components with different viscosities, such that they represent strongly and weakly self-coupled sectors, is shown to be characterized by a hydrodynamic attractor which has an early-time behavior that is reminiscent of the so-called bottom-up thermalization scenario in heavy-ion collisions. The hydrodynamization times for the two sectors can differ strongly, with details depending on the curve realized on the two-dimensional attractor surface, which might account for differ…
Hydrodynamic attractors have recently gained prominence in the context of early stages of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the RHIC and LHC. We critically examine the existing ideas on this subject from a phase space point of view. In this picture the hydrodynamic attractor can be seen as a special case of the more general phenomenon of dynamical dimensionality reduction of phase space regions. We quantify this using Principal Component Analysis. Furthermore, we adapt the well known slow-roll approximation to this setting. These techniques generalize easily to higher dimensional phas…
The collective evolution of produced matter in heavy-ion collisions is effectively described by hydrodynamics from time scales greater than the inverse of the temperature, $τ\gtrsim 1/T$. In the context of the Gubser solution, I show that the hydrodynamization condition $τ\, T \gtrsim 1$ is translated into an allowed domain in the spatial system size and the final multiplicity for hydrodynamics applicability. It turns out that the flow measurements in pp collisions are inside the domain of validity. I predict that by approaching the boundaries of the allowed domain the hydrodynamic response to…
We construct a new relativistic viscous hydrodynamics code optimized in the Milne coordinates. We split the conservation equations into an ideal part and a viscous part, using the Strang spitting method. In the code a Riemann solver based on the two-shock approximation is utilized for the ideal part and the Piecewise Exact Solution (PES) method is applied for the viscous part. We check the validity of our numerical calculations by comparing analytical solutions, the viscous Bjorken's flow and the Israel-Stewart theory in Gubser flow regime. Using the code, we discuss possible development of th…
We exploit the concept of hydrodynamic attractors to establish a general relation between the initial state energy and the produced particle multiplicities in high-energy nuclear collisions. When combined with an ab initio model of energy deposition, the entropy production during the pre-equilibrium phase naturally explains the universal centrality dependence of the measured charged particle yields in nucleus-nucleus collisions. We further estimate the energy density of the far-from-equilibrium initial state and discuss how our results can be used to constrain non-equilibrium properties of the…
