The existing periodic orbit theory of spectral correlations for classically chaotic systems relies on the Riemann-Siegel-like representation of the spectral determinants which is still largely hypothetical. We suggest a simpler derivation using analytic continuation of the periodic-orbit expansion of the pertinent generating function from the convergence border to physically important real values of its arguments. As examples we consider chaotic systems without time reversal as well as the Riemann zeta function and Dirichlet L-functions zeros.
This paper investigates the global structures of periodic orbits that appear in Rayleigh-Bénard convection, which is modeled by a two-dimensional perturbed Hamiltonian model, by focusing upon resonance, symmetry and bifurcation of the periodic orbits. First, we show the global structures of periodic orbits in the extended phase space by numerically detecting the associated periodic points on the Poincaré section. Then, we illustrate how resonant periodic orbits appear and specifically clarify that there exist some symmetric properties of such resonant periodic orbits which are projected on the…
The scattering determinant for the scattering of waves from several obstacles is considered in the case of elastic solids with voids. The multi-scattering determinant displays contributions from periodic ray-splitting orbits. A discussion of the weights of such orbits is presented.
We study which and how a periodic orbit in phase space links to both the largest Lyapunov exponent and the expectation values of macroscopic variables in a Hamiltonian system with many degrees of freedom. The model which we use in this paper is the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Using a method based on the modulational estimate of a periodic orbit, we predict the largest Lyapunov exponent and the expectation value of a macroscopic variable. We show that (i) the predicted largest Lyapunov exponent generally depends on the periodic orbit which we employ, and (ii) the predicted expectat…
Homoclinic and unstable periodic orbits in chaotic systems play central roles in various semiclassical sum rules. The interferences between terms are governed by the action functions and Maslov indices. In this article, we identify geometric relations between homoclinic and unstable periodic orbits, and derive exact formulae expressing the periodic orbit classical actions in terms of corresponding homoclinic orbit actions plus certain phase space areas. The exact relations provide a basis for approximations of the periodic orbit actions as action differences between homoclinic orbits with well…
Periodic orbit action correlations are studied for the piecewise linear, area-preserving Baker map. Semiclassical periodic orbit formulae together with universal spectral statistics in the corresponding quantum Baker map suggest the existence of universal periodic orbit correlations. The calculation of periodic orbit sums for the Baker map can be performed with the help of a Perron-Frobenius type operator. This makes it possible to study periodic orbit correlations for orbits with period up to 500 iterations of the map. Periodic orbit correlations are found to agree quantitatively with the pre…
We show that the Lyapunov exponents of a periodic orbit can be easily obtained from the eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix. It turns out that the Lyapunov exponents of simply stable periodic orbits are all zero, simply unstable periodic orbits have only one positive Lyapunov exponent, doubly unstable periodic orbits have two different positive Lyapunov exponents and the two positive Lyapunov exponents of complex unstable periodic orbits are equal. We present a numerical example for periodic orbits in a realistic galactic potential. Moreover, the center manifold theorem allowed us to show that…
A method to determine the admissibility of symbolic sequences and to find the unstable periodic orbits corresponding to allowed symbolic sequences for the diamagnetic Kepler problem is proposed by using the ordering of stable and unstable manifolds. By investigating the unstable periodic orbits up to length 6, a one to one correspondence between the unstable periodic orbits and their corresponding symbolic sequences is shown under the system symmetry decomposition.
In the helium case of the classical Coulomb three-body problem in two dimensions with zero angular momentum, we develop a procedure to find periodic orbits applying two symbolic dynamics for one-dimensional and planar problems. A sequence of periodic orbits are predicted and are actually found numerically. The results obtained here will be a cornerstone for finding the remaining periodic orbits, which needed for semiclassical applications such as periodic orbit quantization.
The aim of this paper is to numerically investigate the orbital dynamics of the circular planar restricted problem of five bodies. By numerically integrating several large sets of initial conditions of orbits we classify them into three main categories: (i) bounded (regular or chaotic) (ii) escaping and (iii) close encounter orbits. In addition, we determine the influence of the mass parameter on the orbital structure of the system, on the degree of fractality, as well as on the families of symmetric and non-symmetric periodic orbits. The networks and the linear stability of both symmetric and…
Periodic orbit theory for classical hyperbolic system is very significant matter of how we can interpret spectral statistics in terms of semiclassical theory. Although pruning is significant and generic property for almost all hyperbolic systems, pruning-proof property for the correlation among the periodic orbits which gains a resurgence of second term of the random matrix form factor remains open problem. In the light of the semiclassical form factor, our attention is paid to statistics for the pairs of periodic orbits. Also in the context of pruning, we investigated statistical properties o…
Multiplicities of periodic orbit lengths for non-arithmetic Hecke triangle groups are discussed. It is demonstrated both numerically and analytically that at least for certain groups the mean multiplicity of periodic orbits with exactly the same length increases exponentially with the length. The main ingredient used is the construction of joint distribution of periodic orbits when group matrices are transformed by field isomorphisms. The method can be generalized to other groups for which traces of group matrices are integers of an algebraic field of finite degree.
We establish a hierarchical ordering of periodic orbits in a strongly coupled multidimensional Hamiltonian system. Phase space structures can be reconstructed quantitatively from the knowledge of periodic orbits alone. We illustrate our findings for the hydrogen atom in crossed electric and magnetic fields.
Harmonic inversion has already been proven to be a powerful tool for the analysis of quantum spectra and the periodic orbit orbit quantization of chaotic systems. The harmonic inversion technique circumvents the convergence problems of the periodic orbit sum and the uncertainty principle of the usual Fourier analysis, thus yielding results of high resolution and high precision. Based on the close analogy between periodic orbit trace formulae for regular and chaotic systems the technique is generalized in this paper for the semiclassical quantization of integrable systems. Thus, harmonic invers…
We prove the existence of periodic orbits of the two fixed centers problem bifurcating from the Kepler problem. We provide the analytical expressions of these periodic orbits when the mass parameter of the system is sufficiently small.
We examine a strange chaotic attractor and its unstable periodic orbits in case of one degree of freedom nonlinear oscillator with non symmetric potential. We propose an efficient method of chaos control stabilizing these orbits by a pulsive feedback technique. Discrete set of pulses enable us to transfer the system from one periodic state to another.
The multiphoton ionization of hydrogen by a strong bichromatic microwave field is a complex process prototypical for atomic control research. Periodic orbit analysis captures this complexity: Through the stability of periodic orbits we can match qualitatively the variation of experimental ionization rates with a control parameter, the relative phase between the two modes of the field. Moreover, an empirical formula reproduces quantum simulations to a high degree of accuracy. This quantitative agreement shows how short periodic orbits organize the dynamics in multiphoton ionization.
Periodic orbits are the central ingredients of modern semiclassical theories and corrections to these are generally non-classical in origin. We show here that for the class of generic polygonal billiards, the corrections are predominantly classical in origin owing to the contributions from closed almost-periodic (CAP) orbit families. Furthermore, CAP orbit families outnumber periodic families but have comparable weights. They are hence indispensable for semiclassical quantization.
The recent paper claims that mean characteristics of chaotic orbits differ from the corresponding values averaged over the set of unstable periodic orbits, embedded in the chaotic attractor. We demonstrate that the alleged discrepancy is an artifact of the improper averaging: Since the natural measure is non-uniformly distributed over the attractor, different periodic orbits make different contributions into the time averages. As soon as the corresponding weights are accounted for, the discrepancy disappears.
The magnitudes of the terms in periodic orbit semiclassical trace formulas are determined by the orbits' stability exponents. In this paper, we demonstrate a simple asymptotic relationship between those stability exponents and the phase-space positions of particular homoclinic points.
Periodic orbits are fundamental to understand the dynamics of nonlinear systems. In this work, we focus on two aspects of interest regarding periodic orbits, in the context of a dissipative mapping, derived from a prototype model of a non-linear driven oscillator with fast relaxation and a limit cycle. For this map, we show numerically the exponential growth of periodic orbits quantity in certain regions of the parameter space and provide an analytical bound for such growth rate, by making use of the transition matrix associated with a given periodic orbit. Furthermore, we give numerical evide…
We investigate the multiple bifurcations in periodic orbit families in the potential field of a highly irregular-shaped celestial body. Topological cases of periodic orbits and four kinds of basic bifurcations in periodic orbit families are studied. Multiple bifurcations in periodic orbit families consist of four kinds of basic bifurcations. We found both binary period-doubling bifurcations and binary tangent bifurcations in periodic orbit families around asteroid 433 Eros. The periodic orbit family with binary period-doubling bifurcations is nearly circular, with almost zero inclination, and …
Although hydrogen in external fields is a paradigm for the application of periodic orbits and the Gutzwiller trace formula to a real system, the trace formula has never been applied successfully to other Rydberg atoms. We show that spectral fluctuations of general Rydberg atoms are given with remarkable precision by the addition of diffractive terms. Previously unknown features in atomic spectra are exposed: there are new modulations that are neither periodic orbits nor combinations of periodic orbits; `core-shadowing' generally decreases primitive periodic orbit amplitudes but can also lead t…
The periodic orbits of the strongly chaotic cardioid billiard are studied by introducing a binary symbolic dynamics. The corresponding partition is mapped to a topological well-ordered symbol plane. In the symbol plane the pruning front is obtained from orbits running either into or through the cusp. We show that all periodic orbits correspond to maxima of the Lagrangian and give a complete list up to code length 15. The symmetry reduction is done on the level of the symbol sequences and the periodic orbits are classified using symmetry lines. We show that there exists an infinite number of fa…
Although the free-fall three-body problem have been investigated for more than one century, however, only four collisionless periodic orbits have been found. In this paper, we report 234 collisionless periodic orbits of the free-fall three-body system with some mass ratios, including three known collisionless periodic orbits. Thus, 231 collisionless free-fall periodic orbits among them are entirely new. In theory, we can gain periodic orbits of the free-fall three-body system in arbitrary ratio of mass. Besides, it is found that, for a given ratio of masses of two bodies, there exists a genera…
Analysis of the PPF chaos control method used in biological experiments shows that it can robustly control a wider class of systems than previously believed, including those without stable manifolds. This can be exploited to find the locations of unstable periodic orbits by varying the parameters of the control system.
Periodic orbit quantization requires an analytic continuation of non-convergent semiclassical trace formulae. We propose two different methods for semiclassical quantization. The first method is based upon the harmonic inversion of semiclassical recurrence functions. A band-limited periodic orbit signal is obtained by analytical frequency windowing of the periodic orbit sum. The frequencies of the periodic orbit signal are the semiclassical eigenvalues, and are determined by either linear predictor, Pade approximant, or signal diagonalization. The second method is based upon the direct applica…
Via evaluation of the Lyapunov exponent, we report the discovery of three prominent sets of phase space regimes of quasi-periodic orbits of charged particles trapped in a dipole magnetic field. Besides the low energy regime that has been studied extensively and covers more than 10% in each dimension of the phase space of trapped orbits, there are two sets of high energy regimes, the largest of which covers more than 4% in each dimension of the phase space of trapped orbits. Particles in these high energy orbits may be observed in space and be realized in plasma experiments on the Earth. It is …
It is known that unstable periodic orbits of a given map give information about the natural measure of a chaotic attractor. In this work we show how these orbits can be used to calculate the density function of the first Poincaré returns. The close relation between periodic orbits and the Poincaré returns allows for estimates of relevant quantities in dynamical systems, as the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, in terms of this density function. Since return times can be trivially observed and measured, our approach to calculate this entropy is highly oriented to the treatment of experimental systems. …
Classical chaotic systems with symbolic dynamics but strong pruning present a particular challenge for the application of semiclassical quantization methods. In the present study we show that the technique of periodic orbit quantization by harmonic inversion of trace formulae, which does not rely on the existence of a complete symbolic dynamics or other specific properties, lends itself ideally to calculating semiclassical eigenvalues from periodic orbit data even in strongly pruned systems. As the number of periodic orbits proliferates exponentially in chaotic systems, we apply the harmonic i…
We address the question of representativeness of a single long unstable periodic orbit for properties of the chaotic attractor it is embedded in. Y. Saiki and M. Yamada [Phys. Rev. E 79, 015201(R) (2009)] have recently suggested the hypothesis that there exist a limit distribution of averages over unstable periodic orbits with given number of loops, N, which is not a Dirac delta-function for infinitely long orbits. In this paper we show that the limit distribution is actually a delta-function and standard deviations decay as 1/sqrt(N) for large enough N.
We review some properties of periodic orbit families in polygonal billiards and discuss in particular a sum rule that they obey. In addition, we provide algorithms to determine periodic orbit families and present numerical results that shed new light on the proliferation law and its variation with the genus of the invariant surface. Finally, we deal with correlations in the length spectrum and find that long orbits display Poisson fluctuations.
The numerical optimized shooting method for finding periodic orbits in nonlinear dynamical systems was employed to determine the existence of periodic orbits in the well-known Rössler system. By optimizing the period $T$ and the three system parameters, $a$, $b$ and $c$, simultaneously, it was found that, for any initial condition $(x_0,y_0,z_0) \in \Re^3$, there exists at least one set of optimized parameters corresponding to a periodic orbit passing through $ (x_0,y_0,z_0)$. After a discussion of this result it was concluded that its analytical proof may present an interesting new mathematic…
The global constraints on chaotic dynamics induced by the analyticity of smooth flows are used to dispense with individual periodic orbits and derive infinite families of exact sum rules for several simple dynamical systems. The associated Fredholm determinants are of particularly simple polynomial form. The theory developed suggests an alternative to the conventional periodic orbit theory approach to determining eigenspectra of transfer operators.
We present a continuation method that enables one to track or continue branches of periodic orbits directly in an experiment when a parameter is changed. A control-based setup in combination with Newton iterations ensures that the periodic orbit can be continued even when it is unstable. This is demonstrated with the continuation of initially stable rotations of a vertically forced pendulum experiment through a fold bifurcation to find the unstable part of the branch.
We apply a recently developed semiclassical theory of short peridic orbits to the stadium billiard. We give explicit expresions for the resonances of periodic orbits and for the application of the semiclassical Hamiltonian operator to them. Then, by using the 3 shortest periodic orbits and 2 more living in the bouncing ball region, we obtain the first 25 odd-odd eigenfunctions with surprising accuracy.
In this work, we show that a zero--Hopf bifurcation take place in the Hyperchaotic Chen system as parameters vary. Using averaging theory, we prove the existence of two periodic orbits bifurcating from the zero--Hopf equilibria located at the origin of the Hyperchaotic Chen system.
We consider the planar three body problem of planetary type and we study the generation and continuation of periodic orbits and mainly of asymmetric periodic orbits. Asymmetric orbits exist in the restricted circular three body problem only in particular resonances called "asymmetric resonances". However, numerical studies showed that in the general three body problem asymmetric orbits may exist not only for asymmetric resonances, but for other kinds, too. In this work, we show the existence of asymmetric periodic orbits in the elliptic restricted problem. These orbits are continued and clarif…
A method to reduce or enhance chaos in Hamiltonian flows with two degrees of freedom is discussed. This method is based on finding a suitable perturbation of the system such that the stability of a set of periodic orbits changes (local bifurcations). Depending on the values of the residues, reflecting their linear stability properties, a set of invariant tori is destroyed or created in the neighborhood of the chosen periodic orbits. An application on a paradigmatic system, a forced pendulum, illustrates the method.
We establish a formula relating global diffusion in a space periodic dynamical system to cycles in the elementary cell which tiles the space under translations.
This study analyzed the scar-like localization in the time-average of a timeevolving wavepacket on the desymmetrized stadium billiard. When a wavepacket is launched along the orbits, it emerges on classical unstable periodic orbits as a scar in the stationary states. This localization along the periodic orbit is clarified through the semiclassical approximation. It essentially originates from the same mechanism of a scar in stationary states: the piling up of the contribution from the classical actions of multiply repeated passes on a primitive periodic orbit. To create this enhancement, sever…
A quantum generalization of the semiclassical theory of Gutzwiller is given. The new formulation leads to systematic orbit-by-orbit inclusion of higher $\hbar$ contributions to the spectral determinant. We apply the theory to billiard systems, and compare the periodic orbit quantization including the first $\hbar$ contribution to the exact quantum mechanical results.
This paper presents a permutation binary neural network characterized by local binary connection, global permutation connection, and the signum activation function. The dynamics is described by a difference equation of binary state variables. Depending on the connection, the network generates various periodic orbits of binary vectors. The binary/permutation connection brings benefits to precise analysis and to FPGA based hardware implementation. In order to consider the periodic orbits, we introduce three tools: a composition return map for visualization of the dynamics, two feature quantities…
The phenomenon of periodic orbit scarring of eigenstates of classically chaotic systems is attracting increasing attention. Scarring is one of the most important "corrections" to the ideal random eigenstates suggested by random matrix theory. This paper discusses measures of scars and in so doing also tries to clarify the concepts and effects of eigenfunction scarring. We propose a new, universal scar measure which takes into account an entire periodic orbit and the linearized dynamics in its vicinity. This measure is tuned to pick out those structures which are induced in quantum eigenstates …
It is demonstrated that improved entrainment control of chaotic systems can maintain periodic goal dynamics near unstable periodic orbits without feedback. The method is based on the optimization of goal trajectories and leads to small open-loop control forces.
We discuss consequences of a recent observation that the sequence of periodic orbits in a chaotic billiard behaves like a poissonian stochastic process on small scales. This enables the semiclassical form factor $K_{sc}(τ)$ to agree with predictions of random matrix theories for other than infinitesimal $τ$ in the semiclassical limit.
We study the phase space structure and the orbital diffusion from the vicinity of the vertical Lyapunov periodic orbits around the unstable Lagrangian points L1,2 in a 3D barred galaxy model. By perturbing the initial conditions of these periodic orbits, we detected the following five types of orbital structures in the 4D spaces of section: (i) Ring-like structures, sticky for large time intervals to the unstable invariant manifolds of the simple and double unstable vertical Lyapunov periodic orbits. (ii) 2D tori belonging to quasi-periodic orbits around stable periodic orbits existing in the …
Periodic orbit quantization requires an analytic continuation of non-convergent semiclassical trace formulae. We propose a method for semiclassical quantization based upon the Pade approximant to the periodic orbit sums. The Pade approximant allows the re-summation of the typically exponentially divergent periodic orbit terms. The technique does not depend on the existence of a symbolic dynamics and can be applied to both bound and open systems. Numerical results are presented for two different systems with chaotic and regular classical dynamics, viz. the three-disk scattering system and the c…
We show that a recently proposed numerical technique for the calculation of unstable periodic orbits in chaotic attractors is capable of finding the least unstable periodic orbits of any given order. This is achieved by introducing a modified dynamical system which has the same set of periodic orbits as the original chaotic system, but with a tuning parameter which is used to stabilize the orbits selectively. This technique is central for calculations using the stability criterion for the truncation of cycle expansions, which provide highly improved convergence of calculations of dynamical ave…
As a contribution to the inverse scattering problem for classical chaotic systems, we show that one can select sequences of intervals of continuity, each of which yields the information about period, eigenvalue and symmetry of one unstable periodic orbit.
Analytic methods to investigate periodic orbits in galactic potentials. To evaluate the quality of the approximation of periodic orbits in the logarithmic potential constructed using perturbation theory based on Hamiltonian normal forms. The solutions of the equations of motion corresponding to periodic orbits are obtained as series expansions computed by inverting the normalizing canonical transformation. To improve the convergence of the series a resummation based on a continued fraction may be performed. This method is analogous to that looking for approximate rational solutions (Prendergas…
As the name indicates, a periodic orbit is a solution for a dynamical system that repeats itself in time. In the regular regime, periodic orbits are stable, while in the chaotic regime, they become unstable. The presence of unstable periodic orbits is directly associated with the phenomenon of quantum scarring, which restricts the degree of delocalization of the eigenstates and leads to revivals in the dynamics. Here, we study the Dicke model in the superradiant phase and identify two sets of fundamental periodic orbits. This experimentally realizable atom-photon model is regular at low energi…
We present the first quantum system where Anderson localization is completely described within periodic-orbit theory. The model is a quantum graph analogous to an a-periodic Kronig-Penney model in one dimension. The exact expression for the probability to return of an initially localized state is computed in terms of classical trajectories. It saturates to a finite value due to localization, while the diagonal approximation decays diffusively. Our theory is based on the identification of families of isometric orbits. The coherent periodic-orbit sums within these families, and the summation ove…
We show that the periodic orbit sums for 2-dimensional billiards satisfy an infinity of exact sum rules. We test such sum rules and demonstrate that they can be used to accelerate the convergence of cycle expansions for averages such as Lyapunov exponents.
We examine the effect of short unstable periodic orbits on wavefunction statistics in a classically chaotic system, and find that the tail of the wavefunction intensity distribution in phase space is dominated by scarring associated with the least unstable periodic orbits. In an ensemble average over systems with classical orbits of different instabilities, a power law tail is found, in sharp contrast to the exponential prediction of random matrix theory. The calculations are compared with numerical data and quantitative agreement is obtained
An extension of the Gutzwiller trace formula is given that includes diffraction effects due to hard wall scatterers or other singularities. The new trace formula involves periodic orbits which have arcs on the surface of singularity and which correspond to creping waves. A new family of resonances in the two disk scattering system can be well described which is completely missing if only the traditional periodic orbits are used.
The long term perturbation of a Newtonian binary system by an incident gravitational wave is discussed in connection with the issue of gravitational ionization. The periodic orbits of the planar tidal equation are investigated and the conditions for their existence are presented. The possibility of ionization of a Keplerian orbit via gravitational radiation is discussed.
