It is known that unstable periodic orbits of a given map give information about the natural measure of a chaotic attractor. In this work we show how these orbits can be used to calculate the density function of the first Poincaré returns. The close relation between periodic orbits and the Poincaré returns allows for estimates of relevant quantities in dynamical systems, as the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, in terms of this density function. Since return times can be trivially observed and measured, our approach to calculate this entropy is highly oriented to the treatment of experimental systems. We also develop a method for the numerical computation of unstable periodic orbits.
In the case of ergodicity much of the structure of a one-dimensional time-discrete dynamical system is already determined by its ordinal structure. We generally discuss this phenomenon by considering the distribution of ordinal patterns, which describe the up and down in the orbits of a Borel measurable map on a subset of the real numbers. In particular, we give a natural ordinal description of Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of a large class of one-dimensional dynamical systems and relate Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy to the permutation entropy recently introduced by Bandt and Pompe.
The Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy for dilute systems of hard particles in equilibrium
$h_{\mathrm{KS}}$的密度展开式是$N \barνA [\ln n + B + O(n)]$,其中$\barν$是单粒子碰撞频率。
We consider the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy for dilute gases of $N$ hard disks or spheres. This can be expanded in density as $h_{\mathrm{KS}} \propto n N [\ln n a^d+ B + O(n a^d)+O(1/N)]$, with $a$ the diameter of the sphere or disk, $n$ the density, and $d$ the dimensionality of the system. We estimate the constant $B$ by solving a linear differential equation for the approximate distribution of eigenvalues of the inverse radius of curvature tensor. We compare the resulting values of $B$ both to previous estimates and to existing simulation results, finding very good agreement with the latter. …
In this paper we investigate a quantity called conditional entropy of ordinal patterns, akin to the permutation entropy. The conditional entropy of ordinal patterns describes the average diversity of the ordinal patterns succeeding a given ordinal pattern. We observe that this quantity provides a good estimation of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy in many cases. In particular, the conditional entropy of ordinal patterns of a finite order coincides with the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy for periodic dynamics and for Markov shifts over a binary alphabet. Finally, the conditional entropy of ordinal patter…
The Kolmogorov-Sinai (KS) entropy in turbulent diffusion of magnetic field lines is analyzed on the basis of a numerical simulation model and theoretical investigations. In the parameter range of strongly anisotropic magnetic turbulence the KS entropy is shown to deviate considerably from the earlier predicted scaling relations [Rev. Mod. Phys. {\bf 64}, 961 (1992)]. In particular, a slowing down logarithmic behavior versus the so-called Kubo number $R\gg 1$ ($R = (δB / B_0) (ξ_\| / ξ_\bot)$, where $δB / B_0$ is the ratio of the rms magnetic fluctuation field to the magnetic field strength, an…
We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a Sinai-oscillator trap under a monochromatic driving force. Such a trap is formed by a harmonic potential and a repulsive disk located in the center vicinity corresponding to the first experiments of condensate formation by Ketterle group in 1995. We argue that the external driving allows to model the regime of weak wave turbulence with the Kolmogorov energy flow from low to high energies. We show that in a certain regime of weak driving and weak nonlinearity such a turbulent energy flow is defeated by the Anderson localization that leads…
Kinetic Theory Estimates for the Kolmogorov-Sinai Entropy and the Largest Lyapunov Exponents for Dilute, Hard-Ball Gases and for Dilute, Random Lorentz Gases
Yang-Mills fields are an important part of the non-Abelian space theory describing the properties of quark-gluon plasma. The dynamics of the classical fields are given by the Hamiltonian equations of motion, which contain the member of the field strength tensor SU(2) \cite{1.}. This system exhibits chaotic behavior. The homogeneous Yang-Mills equation includes the quadratic part of the field strength tensor $F_{μν}^a$ expressed in Minkowski space, which was determined by the fields $A_μ^a $. The dynamics of the classical Yang-Mills field equations arise from the Hamiltonian SU(2) field tensor …
We compute the principal Lyapunov exponent and Kolmogorov-Sinai(KS) entropy for Kerr-Newman black hole space-times and investigate the stability and instability of the equatorial circular geodesics via these exponents. We also show that the principal Lyapunov exponent and KS entropy can be expressed in terms of the radial equation of ISCO(innermost stable circular orbit) for timelike circular geodesics. The other aspect we have studied that among the all possible circular geodesics, which encircle the central black-hole, the timelike circular geodesics has the longest orbital period i.e. T_{ti…
Observing how long a dynamical system takes to return to some state is one of the most simple ways to model and quantify its dynamics from data series. This work proposes two formulas to estimate the KS entropy and a lower bound of it, a sort of Shannon's entropy per unit of time, from the recurrence times of chaotic systems. One formula provides the KS entropy and is more theoretically oriented since one has to measure also the low probable very long returns. The other provides a lower bound for the KS entropy and is more experimentally oriented since one has to measure only the high probable…
The Kolmogorov-Sinai (K-S) entropy is a central measure of complexity and chaos. Its calculation for many-body systems is an interesting and important challenge. In this paper, the evaluation is formulated by considering $N$-dimensional symplectic maps and deriving a transfer matrix formalism for the stability problem. This approach makes explicit a duality relation that is exactly analogous to one found in a generalized Anderson tight-binding model, and leads to a formally exact expression for the finite-time K-S entropy. Within this formalism there is a hierarchy of approximations, the final…
Since Bandt et al. have shown that the permutation entropy and the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy coincide for piecewise monotone interval maps, the relationship of both entropies for time-discrete dynamical systems is of a certain interest. The aim of this paper is a discussion of this relationship on the basis of an ordinal characterization of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy recently given.
In classical chaotic systems the entropy, averaged over initial phase space distributions, follows an universal behavior. While approaching thermal equilibrium it passes through a stage where it grows linearly, while the growth rate, the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, is given by the sum over all positive Lyapunov exponents. A natural question is whether a similar relation is valid for quantum systems. We argue that the Maldacena-Shenker-Stanford bound on quantum Lyapunov exponents $λ$ implies that the upper bound on the growth rate of the entropy, averaged over states in Hilbert space that evolve …

We address here the problem of extending the Pesin relation among positive Lyapunov exponents and the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy to the case of dynamical systems exhibiting subexponential instabilities. By using a recent rigorous result due to Zweimüller, we show that the usual Pesin relation can be extended straightforwardly for weakly chaotic one-dimensional systems of the Pomeau-Manneville type, provided one introduces a convenient subexponential generalization of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. We show, furthermore, that Zweimüller's result provides an efficient prescription for the evaluation…
We study the Reynolds number scaling of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and attractor dimension for three dimensional homogeneous isotropic turbulence through the use of direct numerical simulation. To do so, we obtain Lyapunov spectra for a range of different Reynolds numbers by following the divergence of a large number of orthogonal fluid trajectories. We find that the attractor dimension grows with the Reynolds number as Re$^{2.35}$ with this exponent being larger than predicted by either dimensional arguments or intermittency models. The distribution of Lyapunov exponents is found to be fini…
