We describe a new hybrid framework to model non-thermal spectral signatures from highly energetic particles embedded in a large-scale classical or relativistic MHD flow. Our method makes use of \textit{Lagrangian} particles moving through an Eulerian grid where the (relativistic) MHD equations are solved concurrently. Lagrangian particles follow fluid streamlines and represent ensembles of (real) relativistic particles with a finite energy distribution. The spectral distribution of each particle is updated in time by solving the relativistic cosmic ray transport equation based on local fluid conditions. This enables us to account for a number of physical processes, such as adiabatic expansion, synchrotron and inverse Compton emission. An accurate semi-analytically numerical scheme that combines the method of characteristics with a Lagrangian discretization in the energy coordinate is described.
In presence of (relativistic) magnetized shocks, a novel approach to consistently model particle energization due to diffusive shock acceleration has been presented. Our approach relies on a refined shock-detection algorithm and updates the particle energy distribution based on the shock compression ratio, magnetic field orientation and amount of (parameterized) turbulence. The evolved distribution from each \textit{Lagrangian} particle is further used to produce observational signatures like emission maps and polarization signals accounting for proper relativistic corrections. We further demonstrate the validity of this hybrid framework using standard numerical benchmarks and evaluate the applicability of such a tool to study high energy emission from extra-galactic jets.
Polarized models of relativistically hot astrophysical plasmas require transport coefficients as input: synchrotron absorption and emission coefficients in each of the four Stokes parameters, as well as three Faraday rotation coefficients. Approximations are known for all coefficients for a small set of electron distribution functions, such as the Maxwell-Juttner relativistic thermal distribution, and a general procedure has been obtained by Huang & Shcherbakov for an isotropic distribution function. Here we provide an alternative general procedure, with a full derivation, for calculating abso…

In this work, we simulate $γ$-rays created in the hadronic jets of the compact object in binary stellar systems known as microquasars. We utilize as main computational tool the $3$-D relativistic magneto-hydro-dynamical code PLUTO combined with in house derived codes. Our simulated experiments refer to the SS433 X-ray binary, a stellar system in which hadronic jets have been observed. We examine two new model configurations that employ hadron-based emission mechanisms. The simulations aim to explore the dependence of the $γ$-ray emissions on the dynamical as well as the radiative properties of…
We study relativistic magnetized outflows using relativistic equation of state having variable adiabatic index ($Γ$) and composition parameter $(ξ)$. We study the outflow in special relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic regime, from sub-Alfvénic to super-fast domain. We showed that, after the solution crosses the fast point, magnetic field collimates the flow and may form a collimation-shock due to magnetic field pinching/squeezing. Such fast, collimated outflows may be considered as astrophysical jets. Depending on parameters, the terminal Lorentz factors of an electron-proton outflow can comfort…
Weakly magnetized, relativistic collisionless shock waves are not only the natural offsprings of relativistic jets in high-energy astrophysical sources, they are also associated with some of the most outstanding displays of energy dissipation through particle acceleration and radiation. Perhaps their most peculiar and exciting feature is that the magnetized turbulence that sustains the acceleration process, and (possibly) the secondary radiation itself, is self-excited by the accelerated particles themselves, so that the phenomenology of these shock waves hinges strongly on the microphysics of…

The merger of two neutron stars (NSs) produces the emission of gravitational waves, the formation of a compact object surrounded by a dense and magnetized environment, and the launching of a collimated and relativistic jet, which will eventually produce a short gamma-ray burst (SGRB). The interaction of the jet with the environment has been shown to play a major role in shaping the structure of the outflow that eventually powers the gamma-ray emission. In this paper, we present a set of 2.5 dimensional RMHD simulations that follow the evolution of a relativistic non-magnetized jet through a me…
The interactions between a relativistic magnetized collisionless shock and dense clumps have been expected to play a crucial role on the magnetic field amplification and cosmic-ray acceleration. We investigate this process by two-dimensional Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations for the first time, where the clump size is much larger than the gyroradius of downstream particles. We also perform relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations for the same condition to see the kinetic effects. We find that particles escape from the shocked clump along magnetic field lines in the PIC simulations, …
We carry out a linear stability analysis of a magnetized relativistic rotating cylindrical jet flow using the approximation of zero thermal pressure. We identify several modes of instability in the jet: Kelvin-Helmholtz, current driven and two kinds of centrifugal-buoyancy modes -- toroidal and poloidal. The Kelvin-Helmholtz mode is found at low magnetization and its growth rate depends very weakly on the pitch parameter of the background magnetic field and on rotation. The current driven mode is found at high magnetization, the values of its growth rate and the wavenumber, corresponding to th…
We describe an implementation of a particle physics module available for the PLUTO code, appropriate for the dynamical evolution of a plasma consisting of a thermal fluid and a non-thermal component represented by relativistic charged particles, or cosmic rays (CR). While the fluid is approached using standard numerical schemes for magnetohydrodynamics, CR particles are treated kinetically using conventional Particle-In-Cell (PIC) techniques. The module can be used to describe either test particles motion in the fluid electromagnetic field or to solve the fully coupled MHD-PIC system of equati…
Reverse shock (RS) emission can be used to probe the properties of the relativistic ejecta, especially the degree of magnetization $σ$, in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows. However, there has been confusion in the literature regarding the physical condition for the RS formation, and the role of magnetic fields in the RS dynamics in the Poynting-flux-dominated regime is not fully understood. Exploiting the shock jump conditions, we characterize the properties of a magnetized RS. We compare the RS dynamics and forming conditions from different theories and numerical simulations, and reconcile th…
The evolution of a relativistic blastwave is usually delineated under the assumption of pressure balance between forward- and reverse-shocked regions. However, such a treatment usually violates the energy conservation law, and is inconsistent with existing MHD numerical simulation results. A mechanical model of non-magnetized blastwaves was proposed in previous work to solve the problem. In this paper, we generalize the mechanical model to the case of a blastwave driven by an ejecta with an arbitrary magnetization parameter $σ_{\rm ej}$. We test our modified mechanical model by considering a l…
Mildly relativistic shocks in magnetized electron-ion plasmas are investigated with 2D kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of unprecedentedly high resolution and large scale for conditions that may be found at internal shocks in blazar cores. Ion-scale effects cause corrugations along the shock surface whose properties somewhat depend on the configuration of the mean perpendicular magnetic field, that is either in or out of the simulation plane. We show that the synchrotron maser instability persists to operate in mildly relativistic shocks in agreement with theoretical predictions and produc…
Particle acceleration and heating at mildly relativistic magnetized shocks in electron-ion plasma are investigated with unprecedentedly high-resolution two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations that include ion-scale shock rippling. Electrons are super-adiabatically heated at the shock, and most of the energy transfer from protons to electrons takes place at or downstream of the shock. We are the first to demonstrate that shock rippling is crucial for the energization of electrons at the shock. They remain well below equipartition with the protons. The downstream electron spectra are approx…
Relativistic magnetized shocks are a natural source of coherent emission, offering a plausible radiative mechanism for Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). We present first-principles 3D simulations that provide essential information for the FRB models based on shocks: the emission efficiency, spectrum, and polarization. The simulated shock propagates in an $e^\pm$ plasma with magnetization $σ>1$. The measured fraction of shock energy converted to coherent radiation is $\simeq 10^{-3} \, σ^{-1}$, and the energy-carrying wavenumber of the wave spectrum is $\simeq 4 \,ω_{\rm c}/c$, where $ω_{\rm c}$ is the…
Laplace-Fourier linear stability analysis of non-relativistic magnetized rotational jets: mode identification by Hamiltonian analysis and the occurrence of mode transitions
Relativistic magnetized jets, such as those from AGN, GRBs and XRBs, are susceptible to current- and pressure-driven MHD instabilities that can lead to particle acceleration and non-thermal radiation. Here we investigate the development of these instabilities through 3D kinetic simulations of cylindrically symmetric equilibria involving toroidal magnetic fields with electron-positron pair plasma. Generalizing recent treatments by Alves et al. (2018) and Davelaar et al. (2020), we consider a range of initial structures in which the force due to toroidal magnetic field is balanced by a combinati…
We study neutrino and antineutrino emission from the direct Urca process in neutron-star matter in the presence of strong magnetic fields. We calculate the neutrino emissivity of the direct Urca process, whereby a neutron converts to a proton, an electron and an antineutrino, or a proton-electron pair converts to a neutron-neutrino pair. We solve exact wave functions for protons and electrons in the states described with Landau levels. We find that the direct Urca process can satisfy the kinematic constraints even in density regions where this process could not normally occur in the absence of…
A sufficient condition for maser instability in a weakly magnetized relativistic plasma with an isotropic particle distribution function is given. The maser growth rates and polarizations are computed starting from the exact dielectric permittivity tensor of a magnetized plasma. For very weak magnetic fields, our results confirm the approximate validity of the 'standard maser theory', which is based on the Einstein coefficients method, with one significant exception. For inclined propagation and realistic (small but finite) field, the growth rates of the two (nearly circular) polarizations dif…
We present relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) simulations of stationary overpressured magnetized relativistic jets which are characterized by their dominant type of energy, namely internal, kinetic, or magnetic. Each model is threaded by a helical magnetic field with a pitch angle of $45^\circ$ and features a series of recollimation shocks produced by the initial pressure mismatch, whose strength and number varies as a function of the dominant type of energy. We perform a study of the polarization signatures from these models by integrating the radiative transfer equations for synchrotron…
