We study the dynamic efficiency of conversion of kinetic-to-thermal/magnetic energy of internal shocks in relativistic magnetized outflows. We model internal shocks as being caused by collisions of shells of plasma with the same energy flux and a non-zero relative velocity. The contact surface, where the interaction between the shells takes place, can break up either into two oppositely moving shocks (in the frame where the contact surface is at rest), or into a reverse shock and a forward rarefaction. We find that for moderately magnetized shocks (magnetization $σ\simeq 0.1$), the dynamic efficiency in a single two-shell interaction can be as large as 40%. Thus, the dynamic efficiency of moderately magnetized shocks is larger than in the corresponding unmagnetized two-shell interaction. If the slower shell propagates with a sufficiently large velocity, the efficiency is only weakly dependent on its Lorentz factor. Consequently, the dynamic efficiency of shell interactions in the magnetized flow of blazars and gamma-ray bursts is effectively the same. These results are quantitatively rather independent on the equation of state of the plasma. The radiative efficiency of the process is expected to be a fraction $f_r<1$ of the estimated dynamic one, the exact value of $f_r$ depending on the particularities of the emission processes which radiate away the thermal or magnetic energy of the shocked states.
We study relativistic magnetized outflows using relativistic equation of state having variable adiabatic index ($Γ$) and composition parameter $(ξ)$. We study the outflow in special relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic regime, from sub-Alfvénic to super-fast domain. We showed that, after the solution crosses the fast point, magnetic field collimates the flow and may form a collimation-shock due to magnetic field pinching/squeezing. Such fast, collimated outflows may be considered as astrophysical jets. Depending on parameters, the terminal Lorentz factors of an electron-proton outflow can comfort…
We argue that small pitch angle synchrotron emission provides an important dissipation mechanism which has to be taken into account in the models of formation of relativistic magnetized gamma-ray burst (GRB) outflows from the newborn black holes and/or magnetars. We show that if the GRB outflow is proton loaded, spectral energy distribution of this emission is expected to sharply peak in 0.1-1~MeV energy band. If the small pitch angle synchrotron emission efficiently cools relativistic particles of the outflow, its spectrum below the peak energy is a powerlaw with spectral index alpha ~ -1, cl…
We consider dynamical scales in magnetized GRB outflows, using the solutions to the Riemann problem of expanding arbitrarily magnetized outflows (Lyutikov 2010). For high ejecta magnetization, the behavior of the forward shock closely resembles the so-called thick shell regime of the hydrodynamical expansion. The exception is at small radii, where the motion of the forward shock is determined by the dynamics of subsonic relativistic outflows. The behaviors of the reverse shock is different in fluid and magnetized cases: in the latter case, even for medium magnetization, sigma ~ 1, the reverse …
Magnetically-driven non-stationary acceleration of jets in AGNs results in the leading parts of the flow been accelerated to much higher Lorentz factors than in the case of steady state acceleration with the same parameters. The higher Doppler-boosted parts of the flow may dominate the high energy emission of blazar jets. We suggest that highly variable GeV and TeV emission in blazars is produced by the faster moving leading edges of highly magnetized non-stationary ejection blobs, while the radio data trace the slower-moving bulk flow. Model predictions compare favorably with the latest Fermi…
We study the dynamic and radiative efficiency of conversion of kinetic-to-thermal/magnetic energy by internal shocks in relativistic magnetized outflows. A parameter study of a large number of collisions of cylindrical shells is performed. We explore how, while keeping the total flow luminosity constant, the variable fluid magnetization influences the efficiency and find that the interaction of shells in a mildly magnetized jet yields higher dynamic, but lower radiative efficiency than in a non-magnetized flow. A multi-wavelength radiative signature of different shell magnetization is computed…
We investigate shock structure and particle acceleration in relativistic magnetized collisionless pair shocks by means of 2.5D and 3D particle-in-cell simulations. We explore a range of inclination angles between the pre-shock magnetic field and the shock normal. We find that only magnetic inclinations corresponding to "subluminal" shocks, where relativistic particles following the magnetic field can escape ahead of the shock, lead to particle acceleration. The downstream spectrum in such shocks consists of a relativistic Maxwellian and a high-energy power-law tail with exponential cutoff. For…
The so-called internal shock model aims to explain the light-curves and spectra produced by non-thermal processes originated in the flow of blazars and gamma-ray bursts. A long standing question is whether the tenuous collisionless shocks, driven inside a relativistic flow, are efficient enough to explain the amount of energy observed as compared with the expected kinetic power of the outflow. In this work we study the dynamic efficiency of conversion of kinetic-to- thermal/magnetic energy of internal shocks in relativistic magnetized outflows. We find that the collision between shells with a …
In this paper, we study magnetized winds described by variable adiabatic index equation of state in Paczyński \& Wiita pseudo-Newtonian potential. We identify the flow solutions with the parameter space of the flow. We also confirm that the physical wind solution is the one which passes through the slow, Alfvén and fast critical points. We study the dependence of the wind solution on the Bernoulli parameter $E$ and the total angular momentum $L$. The adiabatic index, which is a function of temperature and composition, was found to be variable in all the outflow solutions. For the same values o…
We run two GRRMHD simulations of super-Eddington accretion disks around a black hole and a non-magnetized, non-rotating neutron star. The neutron star was modeled using a reflective inner boundary condition. We observe the formation of a transition layer in the inner region of the disk in the neutron star simulation which leads to a larger mass outflow rate and a lower radiative luminosity over the black hole case. Sphereization of the flow leads to an observable luminosity at infinity around the Eddington value when viewed from all directions for the neutron star case, contrasting to the blac…
We consider the double-shock structure of ultra-relativistic flows produced by the interaction of magnetized wind with magnetized external medium. The contact discontinuity (CD) is a special point in the flow - density, kinetic pressure and magnetic field experience a jump or are non-analytic on the CD. To connect dynamically the outside region (the forward shock flow) with the inside region (the reverse shock flow) requires resolving flow singularities at the contact discontinuity. On the CD the pressure is communicated exclusively by the magnetic field on both sides - the CD becomes an Alfve…
Neutrino-cooled accretion flow around a spinning black hole, produced by a compact binary merger is a promising scenario for jet formation and launching magnetically-driven outflows. Based on GW170817 gravitational wave detection by LIGO and Virgo observatories followed by electromagnetic counterparts, this model can explain the central engine of the short duration gamma ray bursts (GRB) and kilonova radiations. Using the open-source GRMHD HARM-COOL code, we evolved several 2D magnetized accretion disk-black hole models with realistic equation of state in the fixed curved space-time background…
We investigate shock structure and particle acceleration in relativistic magnetized collisionless electron-ion shocks by means of 2.5D particle-in-cell simulations with ion-to-electron mass ratios (m_i/m_e) ranging from 16 to 1000. We explore a range of inclination angles between the pre-shock magnetic field and the shock normal. In "subluminal" shocks, where relativistic particles can escape ahead of the shock along the magnetic field lines, ions are efficiently accelerated via a Fermi-like mechanism. The downstream ion spectrum consists of a relativistic Maxwellian and a high-energy power-la…
Weakly magnetized, relativistic collisionless shock waves are not only the natural offsprings of relativistic jets in high-energy astrophysical sources, they are also associated with some of the most outstanding displays of energy dissipation through particle acceleration and radiation. Perhaps their most peculiar and exciting feature is that the magnetized turbulence that sustains the acceleration process, and (possibly) the secondary radiation itself, is self-excited by the accelerated particles themselves, so that the phenomenology of these shock waves hinges strongly on the microphysics of…
The interactions between a relativistic magnetized collisionless shock and dense clumps have been expected to play a crucial role on the magnetic field amplification and cosmic-ray acceleration. We investigate this process by two-dimensional Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations for the first time, where the clump size is much larger than the gyroradius of downstream particles. We also perform relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations for the same condition to see the kinetic effects. We find that particles escape from the shocked clump along magnetic field lines in the PIC simulations, …
We explore the global structure of the accretion flow around a Schwarzschild black hole where the accretion disc is threaded by toroidal magnetic fields. The accretion flow is optically thin and advection dominated. Synchrotron radiation is considered to be the active cooling mechanism in the flow. With this, we obtain the global transonic accretion solutions and show that centrifugal barrier in the rotating magnetized accretion flow causes a discontinuous transition of the flow variables in the form of shock waves. The shock properties and the dynamics of the post-shock corona are affected by…
An extended magnetosphere of a strongly magnetized accreting white dwarf (known as a polar) prevents the formation of an accretion disk and the matter is channelled to the magnetic pole(s). A few such sources show quasi-periodic oscillations in their optical light curves. These high-frequency oscillations are thought to be generated from the post-shock accretion column. The kinetic energy of the accretion flow is finally emitted from this post-shock region and the involved radiation processes decide the state of the matter. Here we study the structure and the dynamical properties of such accre…
In the dynamical models of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, the uniform assumption of the shocked region is known as provoking total energy conservation problem. In this work we consider shocks originating from magnetized ejecta, extend the energy-conserving hydrodynamical model of Yan et al. (2007) to the MHD limit by applying the magnetized jump conditions from Zhang & Kobayashi (2005). Compared with the non-conservative models, our Lorentz factor of the whole shocked region is larger by a factor $\lesssim\sqrt{2}$. The total pressure of the forward shocked region is higher than the reverse…
We have studied shock in magnetized accretion flow/funnel flow in case of neutron star with bremsstrahlung cooling and cyclotron cooling. All accretion solutions terminate with a shock close to the neutron star surface, but at some region of the parameter space, it also harbours a second shock away from the star surface. We have found that cyclotron cooling is necessary for correct accretion solutions which match the surface boundary conditions.
We present the global structure of magnetized advective accretion flow around the rotating black holes in presence of dissipation. By considering accretion flow to be threaded by toroidal magnetic fields and by assuming synchrotron radiative mechanism to be the dominant cooling process, we obtain global transonic accretion solutions in terms of dissipation parameters, such as viscosity ($α_B$), accretion rate (${\dot m}$) and plasma-$β$, respectively. In the rotating magnetized accretion flow, centrifugal barrier is developed in the nearby region of the black hole that triggers the discontinuo…
We present in this paper both a linear study and numerical relativistic MHD simulations of the non-resonant streaming instability occurring in the precursor of relativistic shocks. In the shock front restframe, we perform a linear analysis of this instability in a likely configuration for ultra-relativistic shock precursors. This considers magneto-acoustic waves having a wave vector perpendicular to the shock front and the large scale magnetic field. Our linear analysis is achieved without any assumption on the shock velocity and is thus valid for all velocity regimes. In order to check our ca…
We calculate the structure and short-term evolution of a gamma ray burst central engine in the form of a turbulent torus accreting onto a stellar mass black hole. Our models apply to the short gamma ray burst events, in which a remnant torus forms after the neutron star-black hole or a double neutron star merger and is subsequently accreted. We study the 2-dimensional, relativistic models and concentrate on the effects of black hole and flow parameters as well as the neutrino cooling. We compare the resulting structure and neutrino emission to the results of our previous 1-dimensional simulati…
The correlated and coupled dynamics of accretion and outflow around black holes (BHs) are essentially governed by the fundamental laws of conservation as outflow extracts matter, momentum and energy from the accretion region. Here we analyzed a robust form of 2.5-dimensional viscous, resistive, advective magnetized accretion-outflow coupling in BH systems, in the mean field magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) regime. We solve the complete set of coupled MHD conservation equations self-consistently, through invoking a generalized polynomial expansion in two dimensions. We perform a critical analysis of…
We confirm recent discovery by Cao that in the vicinity of fast rotating black holes jets can be launched centrifugally by cold, magnetized disks even for nearly vertically shaped magnetic flux surfaces. Outflows produced under such extreme conditions are investigated via studying kinematics of test particles in the force-free magnetosphere approximation. Implications of a possibility of magneto-centrifugal launching of very well collimated central outflows around the fast rotating black holes are discussed in the general context of the jet formation scenarios in AGNs.
The internal-shocks scenario in relativistic jets has been used to explain the variability of blazars' outflow emission. Recent simulations have shown that the magnetic field alters the dynamics of these shocks producing a whole zoo of spectral energy density patterns. However, the role played by magnetization in such high-energy emission is still not entirely understood. With the aid of \emph{Fermi}'s second LAT AGN catalog, a comparison with observations in the $γ$-ray band was performed, in order to identify the effects of the magnetic field.
Very recently a fast radio burst (FRB) 200428 associated with a strong X-ray burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 has been detected, which is direct evidence supporting the magnetar progenitor models of FRBs. Assuming the FRB radiation mechanism is synchrotron maser emission from magnetized shocks, we develop a specific scenario by introducing a density jump structure of upstream medium, and thus the double-peaked character of FRB 200428 is a natural outcome. The luminosity and emission frequency of two pulses can be well explained in this scenario. Furthermore, we find that the sync…
The internal shocks scenario in relativistic jets is used to explain the variability of the blazar emission. Recent studies have shown that the magnetic field significantly alters the shell collision dynamics, producing a variety of spectral energy distributions and light-curves patterns. However, the role played by magnetization in such emission processes is still not entirely understood. In this work we numerically solve the magnetohydodynamic evolution of the magnetized shells collision, and determine the influence of the magnetization on the observed radiation. Our procedure consists in sy…
We investigate how magnetically driven outflows are powered by a rotating, weakly magnetized accretion flow onto a supermassive black hole using axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Our proposed model focuses on the accretion dynamics on an intermediate scale between the Schwarzschild radius and the galactic scale, which is $\sim$1-100 pc. We demonstrate that a rotating disk formed on a parsec-scale acquires poloidal magnetic fields via accretion and this produces an asymmetric bipolar outflow at some point. The formation of the outflow was found to follow the growth of strongly magne…
Reverse shock (RS) emission can be used to probe the properties of the relativistic ejecta, especially the degree of magnetization $σ$, in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows. However, there has been confusion in the literature regarding the physical condition for the RS formation, and the role of magnetic fields in the RS dynamics in the Poynting-flux-dominated regime is not fully understood. Exploiting the shock jump conditions, we characterize the properties of a magnetized RS. We compare the RS dynamics and forming conditions from different theories and numerical simulations, and reconcile th…
We present results from two long-duration GRMHD simulations of advection-dominated accretion around a non-spinning black hole. The first simulation was designed to avoid significant accumulation of magnetic flux around the black hole. This simulation was run for a time of 200,000GM/c^3 and achieved inflow equilibrium out to a radius \sim90GM/c^2. Even at this relatively large radius, the mass outflow rate \dot{M}_{out} is found to be only 60% of the net mass inflow rate \dot{M}_{BH} into the black hole. The second simulation was designed to achieve substantial magnetic flux accumulation around…
Common models of blazars and gamma-ray bursts assume that the plasma underlying the ob- served phenomenology is magnetized to some extent. Within this context, radiative signatures of dissipation of kinetic and conversion of magnetic energy in internal shocks of relativistic magnetized outflows are studied. We model internal shocks as being caused by collisions of homogeneous plasma shells. We compute the flow state after the shell interaction by solving Riemann problems at the contact surface between the colliding shells, and then compute the emission from the resulting shocks. Under the assu…
Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) are the extremely energetic transient events, visible from the most distant parts of the Universe. They are most likely powered by accretion on the hyper-Eddington rates that proceeds onto a newly born stellar mass black hole. This central engine gives rise to the most powerful, high Lorentz factor jets that are responsible for energetic gamma ray emission. We investigate the accretion flow evolution in GRB central engine, using the 2D MHD simulations in General Relativity. We compute the structure and evolution of the extremely hot and dense torus accreting onto the fas…
Electromagnetic precursor waves generated by the synchrotron maser instability at relativistic magnetized shocks have been recently invoked to explain the coherent radio emission of Fast Radio Bursts. By means of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we explore the properties of the precursor waves in relativistic electron-positron perpendicular shocks as a function of the pre-shock magnetization $σ\gtrsim 1$ (i.e., the ratio of incoming Poynting flux to particle energy flux) and thermal spread $Δγ\equiv kT/mc^2=10^{-5}-10^{-1}$. We measure the fraction $f_ξ$ of total incoming energy t…
Black holes attract gaseous material from the surrounding environment. Cosmic plasma is largely ionized and magnetized because of electric currents flowing in the highly conductive environment near black holes; the process of accretion then carries the magnetic flux onto the event horizon, $r\simeq R_+$. On the other hand, magnetic pressure acts against accretion. It can not only arrest the inflow but it can even push the plasma away from the black hole if the magnetic repulsion prevails. The black hole does not hold the magnetic field by itself. In this contribution we show an example of an e…
We present a model for a super-Eddington accretion disc around a magnetized neutron star taking into account advection of heat and the mass loss by the wind. The model is semi-analytical and predicts radial profiles of all basic physical characteristics of the accretion disc. The magnetospheric radius is found as an eigenvalue of the problem. When the inner disc is in radiation-pressure-dominated regime but does not reach its local Eddington limit, advection is mild, and the radius of the magnetosphere depends weakly on the accretion rate. Once approaching the local Eddington limit, the disc b…
We study viscous accretion disc around black holes, and all possible accretion solutions, including shocked as well as shock free accretion branches. Shock driven bipolar outflows from a viscous accretion disc around a black hole has been investigated. One can identify two critical viscosity parameters $α_{cl}$ and $α_{cu}$, within which the stationary shocks may occur, for each set of boundary conditions. Adiabatic shock has been found for upto viscosity parameter $α=0.3$, while in presence of dissipation and massloss we have found stationary shock upto $α=0.15$. The mass outflow rate may inc…
We present one-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations including radiative losses, of internal shocks in the outflows from classical novae, to explore the role of shocks in powering multi-wavelength emission from radio to gamma-ray wavelengths. Observations support a picture in which the initial phases of some novae generate a slow, equatorially-focused outflow (directly from the outer Lagrange point, or from a circumbinary disk), which then transitions to, or is overtaken by, a faster more isotropic outflow from the white dwarf which collides and shocks the slower flow, powering gamma-ray and …
The termination regions of non-relativistic jets in protostars and supersonic outflows in classical novae are nonthermal emitters. Given the high densities in these systems, radiative shocks are expected to form. However, in the presence of high velocities, the formation of adiabatic shocks is also possible. A case of interest is when the two types of shocks occur simultaneously. These dense jets/outflows are excellent candidates for laboratory experiments as demonstrated by MHD scaling. We aim at studying the combination of adiabatic and radiative shocks in these systems. We focus on determin…
Modeling of gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt emission spectra sometimes requires a (quasi-) thermal spectral component in addition to the Band function. In photospheric emission models, a prominent thermal component broadened by sub-photospheric dissipation is expected to be released at the photospheric radius, $r_{\rm ph}\sim10^{12}\,$cm. We consider an ultra-relativistic strongly magnetized outflow with a striped-wind magnetic-field structure undergoing gradual and continuous magnetic energy dissipation at $r<r_s$ that heats and accelerates the flow, leading to a bulk Lorentz factor $Γ(r)=Γ_\inf…
We study the global structure of optically thin, advection dominated, magnetized accretion flow around black holes. We consider the magnetic field to be turbulent in nature and dominated by the toroidal component. With this, we obtain the complete set of accretion solutions for dissipative flows where bremsstrahlung process is regarded as the dominant cooling mechanism. We show that rotating magnetized accretion flow experiences virtual barrier around black hole due to centrifugal repulsion that can trigger the discontinuous transition of the flow variables in the form of shock waves. We exami…
(Abridged) X-ray observations of synchrotron rims in supernova remnant (SNR) shocks show evidence of strong magnetic field amplification (a factor of ~100 between the upstream and downstream medium). This amplification may be due to plasma instabilities driven by shock-accelerated cosmic rays (CRs). One candidate is the cosmic ray current-driven (CRCD) instability (Bell 2004), caused by the electric current of large Larmor radii CRs propagating parallel to the upstream magnetic field. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations have shown that the back-reaction of the amplified field on CRs would limit…
We consider delayed, volumetric heating in a magnetized outflow that has broken out of a confining medium and expanded to a high Lorentz factor ($Γ\sim 10^2-10^3$) and low optical depth to scattering ($τ_{\rm T} \sim 10^{-3}-10^{-2}$). The energy flux at breakout is dominated by the magnetic field, with a modest contribution from quasi-thermal gamma rays whose spectrum was calculated in Paper I. We focus on the case of extreme baryon depletion in the magnetized material, but allow for a separate baryonic component that is entrained from a confining medium. Dissipation is driven by relativistic…
Accretion flows having positive specific energy are known to produce outflows and winds which escape to a large distance. According to Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model, centrifugal pressure dominated region of the flow just outside the black hole horizon, with or without shocks, acts as the base of this outflow. Electrons from this region are depleted due to the wind and consequently, energy transfer rate due to inverse Comptonization of low energy photons are affected. Specifically, it becomes easier to cool this region and emerging spectrum is softened. Our main goal is to show spec…
We present a toy model for radio emission in HMXBs with strongly magnetized neutron stars (NS) where a wind-collision region is formed by the NS outflow and the stellar wind of the massive companion. Radio emission is expected from the synchrotron radiation of shock-accelerated electrons and the free-free emission of the stellar wind. We found that the predicted relation between the GHz luminosity ($L_R$) and the accretion X-ray luminosity ($L_X$) can be written as $L_R \propto L_X^b$ for most parameters. No correlation with X-rays is expected ($b=0$) when the thermal emission of the stellar w…
GRB 120308A, a long duration $γ-$ray burst detected by {\it Swift}, was distinguished by a highly-polarized early optical afterglow emission that strongly suggests an ordered magnetic field component in the emitting region. In this work we model the optical and X-ray emission in the reverse and forward shock scenario and show that the strength of the magnetic field in reverse shock region is $\sim 10$ times stronger than that in the forward shock region. Consequently the outflow powering the highly-polarized reverse shock optical emission was mildly-magnetized at a degree $σ\sim$ a few percent…
We present the accretion of magnetized supersonic winds onto a rotating black hole in three dimensions. We select representative spin-wind orientations in order to illustrate its effects on the evolution and morphology of the shock cone. The most important finding in the magnetized case, unlike the purely hydrodynamical scenario, is the formation of rarified spots where the magnetic field pressure dominates over the gas pressure. In these rarified spots we find the formation of eddies within the shock cone.
We examine the properties of spiral shocks from a steady, adiabatic, non-axisymmetric accretion disk around a compact star in binary. We first time incorporate all the possible influences from binary through adopting the Roche potential and Coriolis forces in the basic conservation equations. In this paper, we assume the spiral shocks to be point-wise self-similar, and the flow is in vertical hydrostatic equilibrium to simplify the study. We also investigate the mass outflow due to the shock compression and apply it to the accreting white dwarf in binary. We find that our model will be benefic…
Mildly relativistic shocks in magnetized electron-ion plasmas are investigated with 2D kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of unprecedentedly high resolution and large scale for conditions that may be found at internal shocks in blazar cores. Ion-scale effects cause corrugations along the shock surface whose properties somewhat depend on the configuration of the mean perpendicular magnetic field, that is either in or out of the simulation plane. We show that the synchrotron maser instability persists to operate in mildly relativistic shocks in agreement with theoretical predictions and produc…
We present here the solutions of magnetized accretion flows on to a compact object with hard surface such as neutron stars. The magnetic field of the central star is assumed dipolar and the magnetic axis is assumed to be aligned with the rotation axis of the star. We have used an equation of state for the accreting fluid in which the adiabatic index is dependent on temperature and composition of the flow. We have also included cooling processes like bremsstrahlung and cyclotron processes in the accretion flow. We found all possible accretion solutions. All accretion solutions terminate with a …
