Weakly magnetized, relativistic collisionless shock waves are not only the natural offsprings of relativistic jets in high-energy astrophysical sources, they are also associated with some of the most outstanding displays of energy dissipation through particle acceleration and radiation. Perhaps their most peculiar and exciting feature is that the magnetized turbulence that sustains the acceleration process, and (possibly) the secondary radiation itself, is self-excited by the accelerated particles themselves, so that the phenomenology of these shock waves hinges strongly on the microphysics of the shock. In this review, we draw a status report of this microphysics, benchmarking analytical arguments with particle-in-cell simulations, and extract consequences of direct interest to the phenomenology, regarding in particular the so-called microphysical parameters used in phenomenological studies.
The results of MHD numerical simulations of the formation and development of magnetized jets are presented. Similarity criteria for comparisons of the results of laboratory laser experiments and numerical simulations of astrophysical jets are discussed. The results of laboratory simulations of jets generated in experiments at the Neodim laser installation are presented.
This thesis aims to study how amending certain astrophysical observable of quark stars due to presence of magnetic field. To do this we need to obtain Equation of State (EOS) and consider the stability of Strange Quark Matter (made up of quarks u, d and s) cold dense and magnetized in stellar equilibrium (beta equilibrium, conservation of the baryonic number and charge neutrality). We will work using the phenomenological MIT Bag model. The stability of the Magnetized Strange Quark Matter (MSQM) is studied taking into account the variation of parameters from the model: s quark mass, baryonic de…
We study the conditions for the adiabatic resonant conversion of the cold dark matter (CDM) axions into photons in existence of the astrophysically sourced strong magnetic fields such as those in the neutron star magnetosphere. We demonstrate the possibility that the forthcoming radio telescopes such as the SKA (Square Kilometre Array) can probe those photon signals from the CDM axions.
We study the propagation of neutrinos from compact astrophysical objects with strong magnetic field, such as magnetars. Both neutrino spin rotation and oscillations in a realistic three-flavor model are taken into account. We solve the neutrino evolution equation in the magnetic field near the object and obtain the probabilities of all possible spin-flavor transitions. Assuming that neutrinos are produced in the interior of the star being in their left-handed state with electron flavor, we use these spin-flavor transition probabilities to estimate the fraction of neutrinos, which change their …
A sufficient condition for maser instability in a weakly magnetized relativistic plasma with an isotropic particle distribution function is given. The maser growth rates and polarizations are computed starting from the exact dielectric permittivity tensor of a magnetized plasma. For very weak magnetic fields, our results confirm the approximate validity of the 'standard maser theory', which is based on the Einstein coefficients method, with one significant exception. For inclined propagation and realistic (small but finite) field, the growth rates of the two (nearly circular) polarizations dif…
We review the plasma phenomenology in the astrophysical sources which show appreciable radio emissions, namely Radio-Jets from Pulsars, Microquasars, Quasars and Radio-Active Galaxies. A description of their basic features is presented, then we discuss in some details the links between their morphology and the mechanisms that lead to the different radio-emissions, investigating especially the role played by the plasma configurations surrounding compact objects (Neutron Stars, Black Holes). For the sake of completeness, we briefly mention observational techniques and detectors, whose structure …
Recently, microquasar jets have aroused the interest of many researchers focusing on the astrophysical plasma outflows and various jet ejections. In this work, we concentrate on the investigation of electromagnetic radiation and particle emissions from the jets of stellar black hole binary systems characterized by the hadronic content in their jets. Such emissions are reliably described within the context of the relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics. Our model calculations are based on the Fermi acceleration mechanism through which the primary particles (mainly protons) of the jet are accelerated…
In this brief review we discuss the viability of a multidimensional geometrical theory with one compactified dimension. We discuss the case of a Kaluza Klein fifth dimensional theory, addressing the problem by an overview of the astrophysical phenomenology associated with this five dimensional theory. By comparing the predictions of our model with the features of the ordinary (four dimensional) Relativistic Astrophysics, we highlight some small but finite discrepancies, expectably detectible from the observations. We consider a class of static, vacuum solutions of free electromagnetic Kaluza K…
We study the thermodynamic properties of a relativistic magnetized neutral vector boson gas at any temperature. We analyse the effect of temperature as well as antiparticles in Bose-Einstein condensation. Astrophysical implications are discussed.
Magnetic reconnection, a plasma process converting magnetic energy to particle kinetic energy, is often invoked to explain magnetic energy releases powering high-energy flares in astrophysical sources including pulsar wind nebulae and black hole jets. Reconnection is usually seen as the (essentially 2D) nonlinear evolution of the tearing instability disrupting a thin current sheet. To test how this process operates in 3D, we conduct a comprehensive particle-in-cell simulation study comparing 2D and 3D evolution of long, thin current sheets in moderately-magnetized, collisionless, relativistica…
We consider applications of general relativistic uniformly-rotating white dwarfs to several astrophysical phenomena related to the spin-up and the spin-down epochs and to delayed type Ia supernova explosions of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs, where we estimate the "spinning down" lifetime due to magnetic-dipole braking. In addition, we describe the physical properties of Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-Ray Pulsars as massive rapidly-rotating highly-magnetized white dwarfs. Particularly we consider one of the so-called low-magnetic-field magnetars SGR 0418+5729 as a massive rapidly-rotat…
Axions or more generally axion-like particles (ALPs) are pseudo-scalar particles predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) and considered as highly viable candidates for dark matter (DM) in the universe. If they exist in nature, they are expected to couple with photons in the presence of an external magnetic field through a form of the Primakoff effect. In this work, we examine the detectability of signals produced by ALP-photon coupling in the highly magnetized environment of the relativistic jets produced by active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Furthermore, we tes…
One of the most fundamental features of a black hole in general relativity is its event horizon: a boundary from which nothing can escape. There has been a recent surge of interest in the nature of these event horizons and their local neighbourhoods. In an attempt to resolve black hole information paradox(es), and more generally, to better understand the path towards quantum gravity, "firewalls" have been proposed as an alternative to black hole event horizons. In this paper, we explore the phenomenological implications of black holes possessing a surface or "firewall", and predict a potential…
This whitepaper was submitted to the 2019-2020 APS-DPP-CPP (American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics Community Planning Process) on plasma discovery science. It highlights the need for diverse computational approaches including global and local models, as well as the need for a hierarchy of physics models in complex and multi-scale magnetically and flow-dominated astrophysical systems. Examples of turbulent small-scale vs. large-scale dynamos and turbulent vs. ordered zonal flows in such systems are discussed.
Important astrophysical sources, such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) or tidal disruption events, are impulsive -- strongly varying with time. These outflows are likely highly magnetized near the central source, but their interaction with the external medium is not yet fully understood. Here I consider the combined impulsive magnetic acceleration of an initially highly magnetized shell of plasma and its deceleration by the external medium. I find four main dynamical regimes, that (for a given outflow) depend on the external density. (I) For small enough external densities the shell becomes kinetica…
We study relativistic magnetized outflows using relativistic equation of state having variable adiabatic index ($Γ$) and composition parameter $(ξ)$. We study the outflow in special relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic regime, from sub-Alfvénic to super-fast domain. We showed that, after the solution crosses the fast point, magnetic field collimates the flow and may form a collimation-shock due to magnetic field pinching/squeezing. Such fast, collimated outflows may be considered as astrophysical jets. Depending on parameters, the terminal Lorentz factors of an electron-proton outflow can comfort…
This PhD thesis deals with various aspects of (astro)particle physics phenomenology and consists out of two parts: beyond the Standard Model physics and neutrino astronomy. In the first part, I focus on beyond the Standard Model physics at the Large Hadron collider. Concretely, I discuss the interpretation of a 2015 excess seen by ATLAS in events with jets, missing transverse momentum and 2 same-flavour, opposite-charge leptons within a model of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. Our model, which features supersymmetry breaking in multiple hidden sectors, was able to explain the 2015 data …
Shocks waves are a ubiquitous feature of many astrophysical plasma systems, and an important process for energy dissipation and transfer. The physics of these shock waves are frequently treated/modeled as a collisional, fluid MHD discontinuity, despite the fact that many shocks occur in the collisionless regime. In light of this, using fully kinetic, 3D simulations of non-relativistic, parallel propagating collisionless shocks comprised of electron-positron plasma, we detail the deviation of collisionless shocks form MHD predictions for varying magnetization/Alfvénic Mach numbers, with particu…
Hot accretion tori around a compact object are known to be susceptible to a global hydrodynamical instability, the so-called Papaloizou-Pringle (PP) instability, arising from the interaction of non-axisymmetric waves across the corotation radius, where the wave pattern speed matches the fluid rotation rate. However, accretion tori produced in various astrophysical situations (e.g., collapsars and neutron star binary mergers) are likely to be highly magnetized. We study the effect of magnetic fields on the PP instability in incompressible tori with various magnetic strengths and structures. In …

Common models of blazars and gamma-ray bursts assume that the plasma underlying the ob- served phenomenology is magnetized to some extent. Within this context, radiative signatures of dissipation of kinetic and conversion of magnetic energy in internal shocks of relativistic magnetized outflows are studied. We model internal shocks as being caused by collisions of homogeneous plasma shells. We compute the flow state after the shell interaction by solving Riemann problems at the contact surface between the colliding shells, and then compute the emission from the resulting shocks. Under the assu…
Several studies have been devoted to the possibility that quantum gravity might tangibly affect relativistic kinematics for particles propagating from distant astrophysical sources to our telescopes, but the relevant literature has so far focused exclusively on a subclass of scenarios such that the quantum-gravity effects are independent of (macroscopic) curvature. It was assumed that a phenomenology for quantum-gravity effects that are triggered by curvature might be a dead end because of a double suppression: by the smallness of the characteristic quantum-gravity length scale and by the smal…
Scalar fields like dilaton appear in quantum field theory (QFT) due to scale symmetry breaking. Their appeal also extends to modified theories of gravity, like $F(R)$ gravity, Horva Lifshitz gravity etc. In unified theories they make their appearance through compactification of the extra dimension. Apart from resolving the issues of compactification scale and size, the particles of their fields can also turn out to be excellent candidate to solve the dark energy (DE) and dark matter (DM) problem of the universe. In this work we study their mixing dynamics with photons in a magnetized media, by…
As a shock front interacts with turbulence, it develops corrugation which induces outgoing wave modes in the downstream plasma. For a fast shock wave, the incoming wave modes can either be fast magnetosonic waves originating from downstream, outrunning the shock, or eigenmodes of the upstream plasma drifting through the shock. Using linear perturbation theory in relativistic MHD, this paper provides a general analysis of the corrugation of relativistic magnetized fast shock waves resulting from their interaction with small amplitude disturbances. Transfer functions characterizing the linear re…
We remind that the ring down features observed in the LIGO GWs resulted from trembling of photon spheres (Rp=3M) of newly formed compact objects and not from the trembling of their event horizons (R=2M). Further, the tentative evidences for late time echoes in GWs might be signatures of horizonless compact objects rather than vacuum black holes (BHs). Similarly, even for an ideal BH, the radius of its shadow is R_shad = \sqrt{3}Rp is actually the gravitationally lensed shadow of its photon sphere. Accordingly any compact object having R \geq R = 3M would generate similar shadow. Thus, no obser…
Linear stability of a current sheet that is subject to an impulsive acceleration due to a shock passage is studied with the effect of guide magnetic field. We find that the current sheet embedded in relativistically magnetized plasma always shows a Richtmyer-Meshkov type instability, while it depends on the density structure in the Newtonian limit. The growth of the instability is expected to generate turbulence around the current sheet that can induce so-called turbulent reconnection whose rate is essentially free from plasma resistivity. Thus, the instability can be applied as a triggering m…
Magnetic fields play a crucial role in many astrophysical scenarios and, in particular, are of paramount importance in the emission mechanism and evolution of Neutron Stars (NSs). To understand the role of the magnetic field in compact objects it is important to obtain, as a first step, accurate equilibrium models for magnetized NSs. Using the conformally flat approximation we solve the Einstein's equations together with the GRMHD equations in the case of a static axisymmetryc NS taking into account different types of magnetic configuration. This allows us to investigate the effect of the magn…
Astrophysical fluids are turbulent, magnetized and frequently partially ionized. As an example of astrophysical turbulence, the interstellar turbulence extends over a remarkably large range of spatial scales and participates in key astrophysical processes happening in different ranges of scales. A significant progress has been achieved in the understanding of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence since the turn of the century, and this enables us to better describe turbulence in magnetized and partially ionized plasmas. In fact, the modern revolutionized picture of the MHD turbulence physic…
Magnetic fields play a critical role in the phenomenology of neutron stars. There is virtually no observable aspect which is not governed by them. Despite this, only recently efforts have been done to model magnetic fields in the correct general relativistic regime, characteristic of these compact objects. In this work we present, for the first time a comprehensive and detailed parameter study, in general relativity, of the role that the current distribution, and the related magnetic field structure, have in determining the precise structure of neutron stars. In particular, we show how the pre…
We study collision of particles in the vicinity of a horizon of a weakly magnetized non-rotating black hole. In the presence of the magnetic field innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) of charged particles can be located close to the horizon. We demonstrate that for a collision of two particles, one of which is charged and revolving at ISCO and the other is neutral and falling from infinity, the maximal collision energy can be high in the limit of strong magnetic field. This effect has some similarity with the recently discussed effect of high center-of-mass energy for collision of particles…
Semi-analytical models of disk outflows have successfully described magnetically-driven, self-confined super-Alfvénic jets from near Keplerian accretion disks. These Jet Emitting Disks are possible for high levels of disk magnetization $μ$ defined as $μ=2/β$ where beta is the usual plasma parameter. In near-equipartition JEDs, accretion is supersonic and jets carry away most of the disk angular momentum. However, these solutions prove difficult to compare with cutting edge numerical simulations, for the reason that numerical simulations show wind-like outflows but in the domain of small magnet…
We study the thermodynamic properties of a relativistic magnetized neutral vector boson gas at any temperature. By comparing the results with the low temperature and the non relativistic descriptions of this gas, we found that the fully relativistic case can be separated in two regimes according to temperature. For low temperatures, magnetic field effects dominate and the system shows a spontaneous magnetization, its pressure splits in two components and, eventually, a transversal magnetic collapse might occur. In the high temperature region, the gas behavior is led by pair production. The pre…
Using the extended Poincaré-Lighthill-Kuo (PLK) reductive perturbation method, which incorporates the phase-shift variations, it is shown that common features on propagation and head-on collisions of ion-acoustic waves exist for a magnetized plasmas of different inertial-less particle distributions. For instance it is remarked that, the soliton amplitude is always independent of magnetic field strength while strictly depends on its angle regarding the propagation direction. Both types of solitons (compressive or rarefactive) are shown to exist which are defined through the critical angle $γ=π/…
We develop a first-principles model for the relativistic magnetic reconnection rate in strongly magnetized pair plasmas. By considering the energy budget and required current density near the x-line, we analytically show that in the magnetically-dominated relativistic regime, the x-line thermal pressure is significantly lower than the upstream magnetic pressure due to the extreme energy needed to sustain the current density, consistent with kinetic simulations. This causes the upstream magnetic field lines to collapse in, producing the open outflow geometry which enables fast reconnection. The…
Magnetic reconnection in strongly magnetized astrophysical plasma environments is believed to be the primary process for fast energy release and particle energization. Currently there is strong interest in relativistic magnetic reconnection, in that it may provide a new explanation for high-energy particle acceleration and radiation in strongly magnetized astrophysical systems. We review recent advances in particle acceleration and reconnection physics in the magnetically-dominated regime. More discussion is focused on the physics of particle acceleration, power-law formation as well as the re…
A knowledge of the particle escape time from the acceleration regions of many space and astrophysical sources is of critical importance in the analysis of emission signatures produced by these particles and in the determination of the acceleration and transport mechanisms at work. This paper addresses this general problem, in particular in solar flares, where in addition to scattering by turbulence, the magnetic field convergence from the acceleration region towards its boundaries also influences the particle escape. We test an (approximate) analytic relation between escape and scattering time…
In many astrophysically relevant situations radiation reaction force acting upon a charge can not be neglected and the question arises about the location and stability of circular orbits in such regime. Motion of point charge with radiation reaction in flat spacetime is described by Lorenz-Dirac (LD) equation, while in curved spacetime -- by DeWitt-Brehme (DWB) equation containing the Ricci term and the tail term. We show that for the motion of elementary particles in vacuum metrics the DWB equation can be reduced to the covariant form of the LD equation which we use here. Generically, the LD …
Large-scale extragalactic magnetic fields may induce conversions between very-high-energy photons and axionlike particles (ALPs), thereby shielding the photons from absorption on the extragalactic background light. However, in simplified "cell" models, used so far to represent extragalactic magnetic fields, this mechanism would be strongly suppressed by current astrophysical bounds. Here we consider a recent model of extragalactic magnetic fields obtained from large-scale cosmological simulations. Such simulated magnetic fields would have large enhancement in the filaments of matter. As a resu…
