This paper proposes a new family of recursive systematic convolutional codes, defined in the non-binary domain over different Galois fields GF(q) and intended to be used as component codes for the design of non-binary turbo codes. A general framework for the design of the best codes over different GF(q) is described. The designed codes offer better performance than the non-binary convolutional codes found in the literature. They also outperform their binary counterparts when combined with their corresponding QAM modulation or with lower order modulations.
In this paper, we develop the theory of convolutional codes over finite commutative chain rings. In particular, we focus on maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes and we provide a characterization of these codes, generalizing the one known for fields. Moreover, we relate (reverse) MDP convolutional codes over a finite chain ring with (reverse) MDP convolutional codes over its residue field. Finally, we provide a construction of (reverse) MDP convolutional codes over finite chain rings generalizing the notion of (reverse) superregular matrices.
Two-dimensional (2D) convolutional codes are a generalization of (1D) convolutional codes, which are very appropriate for transmission over an erasure channel. In this paper, we present a decoding algorithm for 2D convolutional codes over this kind of channel by reducing the decoding process to several decoding steps with 1D convolutional codes. Moreover, we provide constructions of 2D convolutional codes that are specially taylored to our decoding algorithm.
Maximum-distance separable (MDS) convolutional codes form an optimal family of convolutional codes, the study of which is of great importance. There are very few general algebraic constructions of MDS convolutional codes. In this paper, we construct a large family of unit-memory MDS convolutional codes over $\F$ with flexible parameters. Compared with previous works, the field size $q$ required to define these codes is much smaller. The construction also leads to many new strongly-MDS convolutional codes, an important subclass of MDS convolutional codes proposed and studied in \cite{GL2}. Many…
We define a new class of Convolutional Codes in terms of fibrations of algebraic varieties generalizaing our previous constructions of Convolutional Goppa Codes. Using this general construction we can give several examples of Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) Convolutional Codes.
In this paper, we present a construction method of non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes. Our construction method is an extension of Felstroem and Zigangirov construction for non-binary LDPC convolutional codes. The rate-compatibility of the non-binary convolutional code is also discussed. The proposed rate-compatible code is designed from one single mother (2,4)-regular non-binary LDPC convolutional code of rate 1/2. Higher-rate codes are produced by puncturing the mother code and lower-rate codes are produced by multiplicatively repeating the mother code. Simulation …
In this paper we study the decoding capabilities of convolutional codes over the erasure channel. Of special interest will be maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes. These are codes which have a maximum possible column distance increase. We show how this strong minimum distance condition of MDP convolutional codes help us to solve error situations that maximum distance separable (MDS) block codes fail to solve. Towards this goal, we define two subclasses of MDP codes: reverse-MDP convolutional codes and complete-MDP convolutional codes. Reverse-MDP codes have the capability to reco…
Quantum convolutional codes can be used to protect a sequence of qubits of arbitrary length against decoherence. In this paper, we give two new constructions of quantum MDS convolutional codes derived from generalized Reed-Solomon codes and obtain eighteen new classes of quantum MDS convolutional codes. Most of them are new in the sense that the parameters of the codes are different from all the previously known ones.
Low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes are capable of achieving excellent performance with low encoding and decoding complexity. In this paper we discuss several graph-cover-based methods for deriving families of time-invariant and time-varying LDPC convolutional codes from LDPC block codes and show how earlier proposed LDPC convolutional code constructions can be presented within this framework. Some of the constructed convolutional codes significantly outperform the underlying LDPC block codes. We investigate some possible reasons for this "convolutional gain," and we also discu…
In this paper we present a concrete algebraic construction of a novel class of convolutional codes. These codes are built upon generalized Vandermonde matrices and therefore can be seen as a natural extension of Reed-Solomon block codes to the context of convolutional codes. For this reason we call them weighted Reed-Solomon (WRS) convolutional codes. We show that under some constraints on the defining parameters these codes are Maximum Distance Profile (MDP), which means that they have the maximal possible growth in their column distance profile. We study the size of the field needed to obtai…
This paper investigates the concept of self-dual convolutional code. We derive the basic properties of this interesting class of codes and we show how some of the techniques to construct self-dual linear block codes generalize to self-dual convolutional codes. As for self-dual linear block codes we are able to give a complete classification for some small parameters.
Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) codes check if a codeword is correctly received. This paper presents an algorithm to design CRC codes that are optimized for the code-specific error behavior of a specified feedforward convolutional code. The algorithm utilizes two distinct approaches to computing undetected error probability of a CRC code used with a specific convolutional code. The first approach enumerates the error patterns of the convolutional code and tests if each of them is detectable. The second approach reduces complexity significantly by exploiting the equivalence of the undetected erro…
In this paper we propose a matched encoding (ME) scheme for convolutionally encoded transmission over intersymbol interference (usually called ISI) channels. A novel trellis description enables to perform equalization and decoding jointly, i.e., enables efficient super-trellis decoding. By means of this matched non-linear trellis description we can significantly reduce the number of states needed for the receiver-side Viterbi algorithm to perform maximum-likelihood sequence estimation. Further complexity reduction is achieved using the concept of reduced-state sequence estimation.
Two concatenated coding schemes incorporating algebraic Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes are proposed. Simulation results show that at a bit error rate of $10^{-5}$, a concatenated scheme using RS and PAC codes has more than $0.25$ dB coding gain over the NASA standard concatenation scheme, which uses RS and convolutional codes.
Two new classes of skew codes over a finite field $\F$ are proposed, called skew convolutional codes and skew trellis codes. These two classes are defined by, respectively, left or right sub-modules over the skew fields of fractions of skew polynomials over $\F$. The skew convolutional codes can be represented as periodic time-varying ordinary convolutional codes. The skew trellis codes are in general nonlinear over $\F$. Every code from both classes has a code trellis and can be decoded by Viterbi or BCJR algorithms.
Maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have the property that their column distances are as large as possible. It has been shown that, transmitting over an erasure channel, these codes have optimal recovery rate for windows of a certain length. Reverse MDP convolutional codes have the additional advantage that they are suitable for forward and backward decoding algorithms. Beyond that the subclass of complete MDP convolutional codes has the ability to reduce the waiting time during decoding. The first main result of this paper is to show the existence and genericity of complete MDP…
Message-passing iterative decoders for low-density parity-check (LDPC) block codes are known to be subject to decoding failures due to so-called pseudo-codewords. These failures can cause the large signal-to-noise ratio performance of message-passing iterative decoding to be worse than that predicted by the maximum-likelihood decoding union bound. In this paper we address the pseudo-codeword problem from the convolutional-code perspective. In particular, we compare the performance of LDPC convolutional codes with that of their ``wrapped'' quasi-cyclic block versions and we show that the minimu…
Maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have been proven to be very suitable for transmission over an erasure channel. In addition, the subclass of complete MDP convolutional codes has the ability to restart decoding after a burst of erasures. However, there is a lack of constructions of these codes over fields of small size. In this paper, we introduce the notion of complete j-MDP convolutional codes, which are a generalization of complete MDP convolutional codes, and describe their decoding properties. In particular, we present a decoding algorithm for decoding erasures within a g…
Maximum distance separable convolutional codes are the codes that present best performance in error correction among all convolutional codes with certain rate and degree. In this paper, we show that taking the constant matrix coefficients of a polynomial matrix as submatrices of a superregular matrix, we obtain a column reduced generator matrix of an MDS convolutional code with a certain rate and a certain degree. We then present two novel constructions that fulfill these conditions by considering two types of superregular matrices.
In 1997 Rosenthal and York defined generalized Hamming weights for convolutional codes, by regarding a convolutional code as an infinite dimensional linear code endowed with the Hamming metric. In this paper, we propose a new definition of generalized weights of convolutional codes, that takes into account the underlying module structure of the code. We derive the basic properties of our generalized weights and discuss the relation with the previous definition. We establish upper bounds on the weight hierarchy of MDS and MDP codes and show that that, depending on the code parameters, some or a…
Polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes are special concatenated codes in which we employ a one-to-one convolutional transform as a precoding step before the polar transform. In this scheme, the polar transform (as a mapper) and the successive cancellation process (as a demapper) present a synthetic vector channel to the convolutional transformation. The numerical results in the literature show that this concatenation improves the weight distribution of polar codes which justifies the superior error correction performance of PAC codes relative to polar codes. In this work, we explicitl…

We give here an efficient method to reconstruct the block interleaver and recover the convolutional code when several noisy interleaved codewords are given. We reconstruct the block interleaver without assumption on its structure. By running some experimental tests we show the efficiency of this method even with moderate noise.
It has been shown that maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have optimal recovery rate for windows of a certain length, when transmitting over an erasure channel. In addition, the subclass of complete MDP convolutional codes has the ability to reduce the waiting time during decoding. In this paper, we derive upper bounds on the necessary field size for the existence of MDP and complete MDP convolutional codes and show that these bounds improve the already existing ones. Moreover, we derive lower bounds for the probability that a random code is MDP respective complete MDP.
LDPC convolutional codes have been shown to be capable of achieving the same capacity-approaching performance as LDPC block codes with iterative message-passing decoding. In this paper, asymptotic methods are used to calculate a lower bound on the free distance for several ensembles of asymptotically good protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. Further, we show that the free distance to constraint length ratio of the LDPC convolutional codes exceeds the minimum distance to block length ratio of corresponding LDPC block codes.
We extend earlier work on the design of convolutional code-specific CRC codes to $Q$-ary alphabets, with an eye toward $Q$-ary orthogonal signaling. Starting with distance-spectrum optimal, zero-terminated, $Q$-ary convolutional codes, we design $Q$-ary CRC codes so that the CRC/convolutional concatenation is distance-spectrum optimal. The $Q$-ary code symbols are mapped to a $Q$-ary orthogonal signal set and sent over an AWGN channel with noncoherent reception. We focus on $Q = 4$, rate-1/2 convolutional codes in our designs. The random coding union bound and normal approximation are used in …
In this paper we will discuss isometries and strong isometries for convolutional codes. Isometries are weight-preserving module isomorphisms whereas strong isometries are, in addition, degree-preserving. Special cases of these maps are certain types of monomial transformations. We will show a form of MacWilliams Equivalence Theorem, that is, each isometry between convolutional codes is given by a monomial transformation. Examples show that strong isometries cannot be characterized this way, but special attention paid to the weight adjacency matrices allows for further descriptions. Various dis…
In this paper asymptotic methods are used to form lower bounds on the free distance to constraint length ratio of several ensembles of regular, asymptotically good, protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. In particular, we show that the free distance to constraint length ratio of the regular LDPC convolutional codes exceeds that of the minimum distance to block length ratio of the corresponding LDPC block codes.
Let H(D) be the parity-check matrix of an LDPC convolutional code corresponding to the parity-check matrix H of a QC code obtained using the method of Tanner et al. We see that the entries in H(D) are all monomials and several rows (columns) have monomial factors. Let us cyclically shift the rows of H. Then the parity-check matrix H'(D) corresponding to the modified matrix H' defines another convolutional code. However, its free distance is lower-bounded by the minimum distance of the original QC code. Also, each row (column) of H'(D) has a factor different from the one in H(D). We show that t…
This paper studies the decoding capabilities of maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes over the erasure channel and compares them with the decoding capabilities of MDS block codes over the same channel. The erasure channel involving large alphabets is an important practical channel model when studying packet transmissions over a network, e.g, the Internet.
This paper proposes a rate-profile construction method for polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes of any code length and rate, which is capable of maintaining trade-off between the error-correction performance and decoding complexity of PAC code. The proposed method can improve the error-correction performance of PAC codes while guaranteeing a low mean sequential decoding complexity for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values beyond a target SNR value.
An efficient implementation of min-sum SC/list decoding of convolutional polar codes is proposed. The complexity of the proposed implementation of SC decoding is more than two times smaller than the straightforward implementation. Moreover, the proposed list decoding algorithm does not require to copy any LLRs during decoding.
Polar codes were introduced in 2009 by Arikan as the first efficient encoding and decoding scheme that is capacity achieving for symmetric binary-input memoryless channels. Recently, this code family was extended by replacing the block-structured polarization step of polar codes by a convolutional structure. This article presents a numerical exploration of this so-called convolutional polar codes family to find efficient generalizations of polar codes, both in terms of decoding speed and decoding error probability. The main conclusion drawn from our study is that increasing the convolution dep…
An ensemble of LDPC convolutional codes with parity-check matrices composed of permutation matrices is considered. The convergence of the iterative belief propagation based decoder for terminated convolutional codes in the ensemble is analyzed for binary-input output-symmetric memoryless channels using density evolution techniques. We observe that the structured irregularity in the Tanner graph of the codes leads to significantly better thresholds when compared to corresponding LDPC block codes.
In this paper we give a compact presentation of the theory of abstract spaces for convolutional codes and convolutional encoders, and show a connection between them that seems to be missing in the literature. We use it for a short proof of two facts: the size of a convolutional encoder of a polynomial matrix is at least its inner degree, and the minimal encoder has the size of the external degree if the matrix is reduced.
A lower bound on minimum distance of convolutional polar codes is provided. The bound is obtained from the minimum weight of generalized cosets of the codes generated by bottom rows of the polarizing matrix. Moreover, a construction of convolutional polar subcodes is proposed, which provides improved performance under successive cancellation list decoding. For sufficiently large list size, the decoding complexity of convolutional polar subcodes appears to be lower compared to Arikan polar subcodes with the same performance. The error probability of successive cancellation list decoding of conv…
We consider the concatenation of a convolutional code (CC) with an optimized cyclic redundancy check (CRC) code as a promising paradigm for good short blocklength codes. The resulting CRC-aided convolutional code naturally permits the use of serial list Viterbi decoding (SLVD) to achieve maximum-likelihood decoding. The convolutional encoder of interest is of rate-$1/ω$ and the convolutional code is either zero-terminated (ZT) or tail-biting (TB). The resulting CRC-aided convolutional code is called a CRC-ZTCC or a CRC-TBCC. To design a good CRC-aided convolutional code, we propose the distanc…
A family of polarizing kernels is presented together with polynomial-complexity algorithm for computing scaling exponent. The proposed convolutional polar kernels are based on convolutional polar codes, also known as b-MERA codes. For these kernels, a polynomial-complexity algorithm is proposed to find weight spectrum of unrecoverable erasure patterns, needed for computing scaling exponent. As a result, we obtain scaling exponent and polarization rate for convolutional polar kernels of size up to 1024.
Performance and complexity of sequential decoding of polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes is studied. In particular, a performance and computational complexity comparison of PAC codes with 5G polar codes and convolutional codes is given. A method for bounding the complexity of sequential decoding of PAC codes is proposed.
In this paper we investigate the design of a low-delay robust streaming PIR scheme on coded data that is resilient to unresponsive or slow servers and can privately retrieve streaming data in a sequential fashion subject to a fixed decoding delay. We present a scheme based on convolutional codes and the star product and assume no collusion between servers. In particular we propose the use of convolutional codes that have the maximum distance increase, called Maximum Distance Profile (MDP). We show that the proposed scheme can deal with many different erasure patterns.
Random network coding recently attracts attention as a technique to disseminate information in a network. This paper considers a non-coherent multi-shot network, where the unknown and time-variant network is used several times. In order to create dependencies between the different shots, particular convolutional codes in rank metric are used. These codes are so-called (partial) unit memory ((P)UM) codes, i.e., convolutional codes with memory one. First, distance measures for convolutional codes in rank metric are shown and two constructions of (P)UM codes in rank metric based on the generator …
Convolutional stabilizer codes promise to make quantum communication more reliable with attractive online encoding and decoding algorithms. This paper introduces a new approach to convolutional stabilizer codes based on direct limit constructions. Two families of quantum convolutional codes are derived from generalized Reed-Solomon codes and from Reed- Muller codes. A Singleton bound for pure convolutional stabilizer codes is given.
In this paper, we present an error-trellis construction for tailbiting convolutional codes. A tailbiting error-trellis is characterized by the condition that the syndrome former starts and ends in the same state. We clarify the correspondence between code subtrellises in the tailbiting code-trellis and error subtrellises in the tailbiting error-trellis. Also, we present a construction of tailbiting backward error-trellises. Moreover, we obtain the scalar parity-check matrix for a tailbiting convolutional code. The proposed construction is based on the adjoint-obvious realization of a syndrome …
It has previously been shown that ensembles of terminated protograph-based low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes have a typical minimum distance that grows linearly with block length and that they are capable of achieving capacity approaching iterative decoding thresholds on the binary erasure channel (BEC). In this paper, we review a recent result that the dramatic threshold improvement obtained by terminating LDPC convolutional codes extends to the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Also, using a (3,6)-regular protograph-based LDPC convolutional code ensemble as an e…
Shearer and McEliece [1977] showed that there is no MacWilliams identity for the free distance spectra of orthogonal linear convolutional codes. We show that on the other hand there does exist a MacWilliams identity between the generating functions of the weight distributions per unit time of a linear convolutional code C and its orthogonal code C^\perp, and that this distribution is as useful as the free distance spectrum for estimating code performance. These observations are similar to those made recently by Bocharova, Hug, Johannesson and Kudryashov; however, we focus on terminating by tai…
$2^m$-ary modulation creates $m$ bit channels which are neither independent nor identical, and this causes problems when applying polar coding because polar codes are designed for independent identical channels. Different from the existing multi-level coding (MLC) and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) schemes, this paper provides a convolutional polar coded modulation (CPCM) method that preserves the low-complexity nature of BICM while offering improved spectral efficiency. Numerical results are given to show the good performance of the proposed method.
Convolutional codes are error-correcting linear codes that utilize shift registers to encode. These codes have an arbitrary block size and they can incorporate both past and current information bits. DNA codes represent DNA sequences and are defined as sets of words comprised of the alphabet A, C, T, G satisfying certain mathematical bounds and constraints. The application of convolutional code models to DNA codes is a growing field of biocomputation. As opposed to block codes, convolutional codes factor in nearby information bits, which makes them an optimal model for representing biological …
In this work, we introduce convolutional codes for network-error correction in the context of coherent network coding. We give a construction of convolutional codes that correct a given set of error patterns, as long as consecutive errors are separated by a certain interval. We also give some bounds on the field size and the number of errors that can get corrected in a certain interval. Compared to previous network error correction schemes, using convolutional codes is seen to have advantages in field size and decoding technique. Some examples are discussed which illustrate the several possibl…
In this paper, we investigate the impact of spatial coupling on the thresholds of turbo-like codes. Parallel concatenated and serially concatenated convolutional codes as well as braided convolutional codes (BCCs) are compared by means of an exact density evolution (DE) analysis for the binary erasure channel (BEC). We propose two extensions of the original BCC ensemble to improve its threshold and demonstrate that their BP thresholds approach the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) threshold of the uncoupled ensemble. A comparison of the different ensembles shows that parallel concatenated ensembles c…
