In this paper, we develop the theory of convolutional codes over finite commutative chain rings. In particular, we focus on maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes and we provide a characterization of these codes, generalizing the one known for fields. Moreover, we relate (reverse) MDP convolutional codes over a finite chain ring with (reverse) MDP convolutional codes over its residue field. Finally, we provide a construction of (reverse) MDP convolutional codes over finite chain rings generalizing the notion of (reverse) superregular matrices.
It has been shown that maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have optimal recovery rate for windows of a certain length, when transmitting over an erasure channel. In addition, the subclass of complete MDP convolutional codes has the ability to reduce the waiting time during decoding. In this paper, we derive upper bounds on the necessary field size for the existence of MDP and complete MDP convolutional codes and show that these bounds improve the already existing ones. Moreover, we derive lower bounds for the probability that a random code is MDP respective complete MDP.
Maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have been proven to be very suitable for transmission over an erasure channel. In addition, the subclass of complete MDP convolutional codes has the ability to restart decoding after a burst of erasures. However, there is a lack of constructions of these codes over fields of small size. In this paper, we introduce the notion of complete j-MDP convolutional codes, which are a generalization of complete MDP convolutional codes, and describe their decoding properties. In particular, we present a decoding algorithm for decoding erasures within a g…
Maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have the property that their column distances are as large as possible. It has been shown that, transmitting over an erasure channel, these codes have optimal recovery rate for windows of a certain length. Reverse MDP convolutional codes have the additional advantage that they are suitable for forward and backward decoding algorithms. Beyond that the subclass of complete MDP convolutional codes has the ability to reduce the waiting time during decoding. The first main result of this paper is to show the existence and genericity of complete MDP…
In this paper we study the decoding capabilities of convolutional codes over the erasure channel. Of special interest will be maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes. These are codes which have a maximum possible column distance increase. We show how this strong minimum distance condition of MDP convolutional codes help us to solve error situations that maximum distance separable (MDS) block codes fail to solve. Towards this goal, we define two subclasses of MDP codes: reverse-MDP convolutional codes and complete-MDP convolutional codes. Reverse-MDP codes have the capability to reco…
This paper studies the decoding capabilities of maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes over the erasure channel and compares them with the decoding capabilities of MDS block codes over the same channel. The erasure channel involving large alphabets is an important practical channel model when studying packet transmissions over a network, e.g, the Internet.
This paper deals with the problem of constructing superregular matrices that lead to MDP convolutional codes. These matrices are a type of lower block triangular Toeplitz matrices with the property that all the square submatrices that can possibly be nonsingular due to the lower block triangular structure are nonsingular. We present a new class of matrices that are superregular over a suficiently large finite field F. Such construction works for any given choice of characteristic of the field F and code parameters (n; k; d) such that (n-k)|d. Finally, we discuss the size of F needed so that th…
Maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have the property that their column distances are as large as possible for given rate and degree. There exists a well-known criterion to check whether a code is MDP using the generator or the parity-check matrix of the code. In this paper, we show that under the assumption that $n-k$ divides $δ$ or $k$ divides $δ$, a polynomial matrix that fulfills the MDP criterion is actually always left prime. In particular, when $k$ divides $δ$, this implies that each MDP convolutional code is noncatastrophic. Moreover, when $n-k$ and $k$ do not divide $δ$…
In this paper we present a concrete algebraic construction of a novel class of convolutional codes. These codes are built upon generalized Vandermonde matrices and therefore can be seen as a natural extension of Reed-Solomon block codes to the context of convolutional codes. For this reason we call them weighted Reed-Solomon (WRS) convolutional codes. We show that under some constraints on the defining parameters these codes are Maximum Distance Profile (MDP), which means that they have the maximal possible growth in their column distance profile. We study the size of the field needed to obtai…
In this paper we investigate the design of a low-delay robust streaming PIR scheme on coded data that is resilient to unresponsive or slow servers and can privately retrieve streaming data in a sequential fashion subject to a fixed decoding delay. We present a scheme based on convolutional codes and the star product and assume no collusion between servers. In particular we propose the use of convolutional codes that have the maximum distance increase, called Maximum Distance Profile (MDP). We show that the proposed scheme can deal with many different erasure patterns.
A general method for constructing convolutional codes from units in Laurent series over matrix rings is presented. Using group ring as matrix rings, this forms a basis for in-depth exploration of convolutional codes from group ring encoding, wherein the ring in the group ring is itself a group ring. The method is used to algebraically construct series of convolutional codes. Algebraic methods are used to compute free distances and to construct convolutional codes to prescribed distances.
Locally repairable convolutional codes (LRCCs) for distributed storage systems (DSSs) are introduced in this work. They enable local repair, for a single node erasure (or more generally, $ \partial - 1 $ erasures per local group), and sliding-window global repair, which can correct erasure patterns with up to $ {\rm d}^c_j - 1 $ erasures in every window of $ j+1 $ consecutive blocks of $ n $ nodes, where $ {\rm d}^c_j $ is the $ j $th column distance of the code. The parameter $ j $ can be adjusted, for a fixed LRCC, according to different catastrophic erasure patterns, requiring only to conta…
In 1997 Rosenthal and York defined generalized Hamming weights for convolutional codes, by regarding a convolutional code as an infinite dimensional linear code endowed with the Hamming metric. In this paper, we propose a new definition of generalized weights of convolutional codes, that takes into account the underlying module structure of the code. We derive the basic properties of our generalized weights and discuss the relation with the previous definition. We establish upper bounds on the weight hierarchy of MDS and MDP codes and show that that, depending on the code parameters, some or a…
In this paper, we study convolutional codes with a specific cyclic structure. By definition, these codes are left ideals in a certain skew polynomial ring. Using that the skew polynomial ring is isomorphic to a matrix ring we can describe the algebraic parameters of the codes in a more accessible way. We show that the existence of such codes with given algebraic parameters can be reduced to the solvability of a modified rook problem. It is our strong belief that the rook problem is always solvable, and we present solutions in particular cases.
A convolutional code $\C$ over $\ZZ[D]$ is a $\ZZ[D]$-submodule of $\ZZN[D]$ where $\ZZ[D]$ stands for the ring of polynomials with coefficients in $\ZZ$. In this paper, we study the list decoding problem of these codes when the transmission is performed over an erasure channel, that is, we study how much information one can recover from a codeword $w\in \C$ when some of its coefficients have been erased. We do that using the $p$-adic expansion of $w$ and particular representations of the parity-check polynomial matrix of the code. From these matrix polynomial representations we recursively se…
In this paper we extend the relation between convolutional codes and linear systems over finite fields to certain commutative rings through first order representations . We introduce the definition of rings with representations as those for which these representations always exist, and we show that finite products of finite fields belong to this class. We develop the input/state/output representations for convolutional codes over these rings, and we show how to use them to construct observable convolutional codes as in the classical case.
Convolutional codes are considered with code sequences modelled as semi-infinite Laurent series. It is wellknown that a convolutional code C over a finite group G has a minimal trellis representation that can be derived from code sequences. It is also wellknown that, for the case that G is a finite field, any polynomial encoder of C can be algebraically manipulated to yield a minimal polynomial encoder whose controller canonical realization is a minimal trellis. In this paper we seek to extend this result to the finite ring case G = Z_{p^r} by introducing a socalled "p-encoder". We show how to…
An important class of codes widely used in applications is the class of convolutional codes. Most of the literature of convolutional codes is devoted to con- volutional codes over finite fields. The extension of the concept of convolutional codes from finite fields to finite rings have attracted much attention in recent years due to fact that they are the most appropriate codes for phase modulation. However convolutional codes over finite rings are more involved and not fully understood. Many results and features that are well-known for convolutional codes over finite fields have not been full…
Noncatastrophic encoders are an important class of polynomial generator matrices of convolutional codes. When these polynomials have coefficients in a finite field, these encoders have been characterized are being polynomial left prime matrices. In this paper we study the notion of noncatastrophicity in the context of convolutional codes when the polynomial matrices have entries in a finite ring. In particular, we need to introduce two different notion of primeness in order to fully characterize noncatastrophic encoders over the finite ring Z_{p^r}. The second part of the paper is devoted to i…
We propose a decoding algorithm for a class of convolutional codes called skew BCH convolutional codes. These are convolutional codes of designed Hamming distance endowed with a cyclic structure yielding a left ideal of a non-commutative ring (a quotient of a skew polynomial ring). In this setting, right and left division algorithms exist, so our algorithm follows the guidelines of the Sugiyama's procedure for finding the error locator and error evaluator polynomials for BCH block codes.
In this paper convolutional codes with cyclic structure will be investigated. These codes can be understood as left principal ideals in a suitable skew-polynomial ring. It has been shown in [3] that only certain combinations of the parameters (field size, length, dimension, and Forney indices) can occur for cyclic codes. We will investigate whether all these combinations can indeed be realized by a suitable cyclic code and, if so, how to construct such a code. A complete characterization and construction will be given for minimal cyclic codes. It is derived from a detailed investigation of the…
In this paper a framework to study the dual of skew cyclic codes is proposed. The transposed Hamming ring extensions are based in the existence of an anti-isomorphism of algebras between skew polynomial rings. Our construction is applied to left ideal convolutional codes, skew constacyclic codes and skew Reed-Solomon code, showing that the dual of these codes belong to the same class.
This paper investigates the application of the theoretical algebraic notion of a separable ring extension, in the realm of cyclic convolutional codes or, more generally, ideal codes. We work under very mild conditions, that cover all previously known as well as new non trivial examples. It is proved that ideal codes are direct summands as left ideals of the underlying non-commutative algebra, in analogy with cyclic block codes. This implies, in particular, that they are generated by an idempotent element. Hence, by using a suitable separability element, we design an efficient algorithm for com…
We investigate the notion of cyclicity for convolutional codes as it has been introduced by Piret and Roos in the seventies. Codes of this type are described as submodules of the module of all vector polynomials in one variable with some additional generalized cyclic structure but also as specific left ideals in a skew polynomial ring. Extending a result of Piret, we show in a purely algebraic setting that these ideals are always principal. This leads to the notion of a generator polynomial just like for cyclic block codes. Similarly a control polynomial can be introduced by considering the ri…
