We derive the 3D energy critical quintic NLS from quantum many-body dynamics with 3-body interaction in the T^3 (periodic) setting. Due to the known complexity of the energy critical setting, previous progress was limited in comparison to the 2-body interaction case yielding energy subcritical cubic NLS. Previously, the only result for the 3D energy critical case was HTX, which proved the uniqueness part of the argument in the case of small solutions. In the main part of this paper, we develop methods to prove the convergence of the BBGKY hierarchy to the infinite Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy, and separately, the uniqueness of large GP solutions. Since the trace estimate used in the previous proofs of convergence is the false sharp trace estimate in our setting, we instead introduce a new frequency interaction analysis and apply the finite dimensional quantum de Finetti theorem. For the large solution uniqueness argument, we discover the new HUFL (hierarchical uniform frequency localization) property for the GP hierarchy and use it to prove a new type of uniqueness theorem. The HUFL property reduces to a new statement even for NLS. With the help of CKSTT,IP which proved the global well-posedness for the quintic NLS, this new uniqueness theorem establishes global uniqueness.
We consider the derivation of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ from quantum $N$-body dynamics. We reformat the hierarchy approach with Klainerman-Machedon theory and prove a bi-scattering theorem for the NLS to obtain convergence rate estimates under $H^{1}$ regularity. The $H^{1}$ convergence rate estimate we obtain is almost optimal for $H^{1}$ datum, and immediately improves if we have any extra regularity on the limiting initial one-particle state.
We derive rigorously the 2D periodic focusing cubic NLS as the mean-field limit of the 3D focusing quantum many-body dynamics describing a dilute Bose gas with periodic boundary condition in the $x$-direction and a well of infinite-depth in the $z$-direction. Physical experiments for these systems are scarce. We find that, to fulfill the empirical requirement for observing NLS dynamics in experiments, namely, the kinetic energy dominates the potential energy, it is necessary to impose an extra restriction on the system parameters. This restriction gives rises to an unusual coupling constant.
We derive the defocusing cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy in dimension $d=3$, from an $N$-body Schrödinger equation describing a gas of interacting bosons in the GP scaling, in the limit $N\rightarrow\infty$. The main result of this paper is the proof of convergence of the corresponding BBGKY hierarchy to a GP hierarchy in the spaces introduced in our previous work on the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for GP hierarchies, \cite{chpa2,chpa3,chpa4}, which are inspired by the solutions spaces based on space-time norms introduced by Klainerman and Machedon in \cite{klma}. We note that i…
We derive the 3D quintic NLS as the mean field limit of a Bose gas with three-body interactions. The quintic NLS is energy-critical, leading to several new difficulties in comparison with the cubic NLS which emerges from Bose gases with pair-interactions. Our method is based on Bogoliubov's approximation, which also provides the information on the fluctuations around the condensate in terms of a norm approximation for the N-body wave function.
We consider a system of $N$ bosons where the particles experience a short range two-body interaction given by $N^{-1}v_N(x)=N^{3β-1}v(N^βx)$ where $v \in C^\infty_c(\mathbb{R}^3)$, without a definite sign on $v$. We extend the results of M. Grillakis and M. Machedon, Comm. Math. Phys., $\textbf{324}$, 601(2013) and E. Kuz, Differ. Integral Equ., $\textbf{137}$, 1613(2015) regarding the second-order correction to the mean-field evolution of systems with repulsive interaction to systems with attractive interaction for $0<β<\frac{1}{2}$. Our extension allows for a more general set of initial data…
The focusing cubic NLS is a canonical model for the propagation of laser beams. In dimensions 2 and 3, it is known that a large class of initial data leads to finite time blow-up. Now, physical experiments suggest that this blow-up does not always occur. This might be explained by the fact that some physical phenomena neglected by the standard NLS model become relevant at large intensities of the beam. Many ad hoc variants of the focusing NLS equation have been proposed to capture such effects. In this paper, we derive some of these variants from Maxwell's equations and propose some new ones. …
We give a microscopic derivation of time-dependent correlation functions of the $1D$ cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) from many-body quantum theory. The starting point of our proof is our previous work on the time-independent problem and work of the second author on the corresponding problem on a finite lattice. An important new obstacle in our analysis is the need to work with a cutoff in the number of particles, which breaks the Gaussian structure of the free quantum field and prevents the use of the Wick theorem. We overcome it by the means of complex analytic methods. Our methods…
We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in any spatial dimension, which is a well-known example of an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system. Inspired by the knowledge that the NLS is an effective equation for a system of interacting bosons as the particle number tends to infinity, we provide a derivation of the Hamiltonian structure, which is comprised of both a Hamiltonian functional and a weak symplectic structure, for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation from quantum many-body systems. Our geometric constructions are based on a quantized version of the Poisson structure i…
We investigate the dynamics of a boson gas with three-body interactions in dimensions $d=1,2$. We prove that in the limit of infinite particle number, the BBGKY hierarchy of $k$-particle marginals converges to a limiting (Gross-Pitaevskii (GP)) hierarchy for which we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions. Factorized solutions of the GP hierarchy are shown to be determined by solutions of a quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Our proof is based on, and extends, methods of Erdös-Schlein-Yau, Klainerman-Machedon, and Kirkpatrick-Schlein-Staffilani.
We consider a 2D time-dependent quantum system of $N$-bosons with harmonic external confining and \emph{attractive} interparticle interaction in the Gross-Pitaevskii scaling. We derive stability of matter type estimates showing that the $k$-th power of the energy controls the $H^{1}$ Sobolev norm of the solution over $k$-particles. This estimate is new and more difficult for attractive interactions than repulsive interactions. For the proof, we use a version of the finite-dimensional quantum di Finetti theorem from [49]. A high particle-number averaging effect is at play in the proof, which is…
We consider the 3D quantum many-body dynamics describing a dilute bose gas with strong confining in one direction. We study the corresponding BBGKY hierarchy which contains a diverging coefficient as the strength of the confining potential tends to $\infty$. We find that this diverging coefficient is counterbalanced by the limiting structure of the density matrices and establish the convergence of the BBGKY hierarchy. Moreover, we prove that the limit is fully described by a 2D cubic NLS and obtain the exact 3D to 2D coupling constant.
We derive rigorously, for both R^2 and [-L, L]^2, the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation in a suitable scaling limit from the two-dimensional many-body Bose systems with short-scale repulsive pair interactions. We first prove convergence of the solution of the BBGKY hierarchy, corresponding to the many-body systems, to a solution of the infinite Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy, corresponding to the cubic NLS; and then we prove uniqueness for the infinite hierarchy, which requires number-theoretical techniques in the periodic case.
We study the ground-state energy of N attractive bosons in the plane. The interaction is scaled for the gas to be dilute, so that the corresponding mean-field problem is a local non-linear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation. We improve the conditions under which one can prove that the many-body problem is stable (of the second kind). This implies, using previous results, that the many-body ground states and dynamics converge to the NLS ones for an extended range of diluteness parameters.
We consider the (de)focusing cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy on $\mathbb{R}$, which is an infinite hierarchy of coupled linear inhomogeneous PDE which appears in the derivation of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation from quantum many-particle systems. Motivated by the fact that the cubic NLS on $\mathbb{R}$ is an integrable equation which admits infinitely many conserved quantities, we exhibit an infinite sequence of operators which generate analogous conserved quantities for the GP hierarchy.
We consider the dynamics of the 3D N-body Schrödinger equation in the presence of a quadratic trap. We assume the pair interaction potential is N^{3β-1}V(N^{β}x). We justify the mean-field approximation and offer a rigorous derivation of the 3D cubic NLS with a quadratic trap. We establish the space-time bound conjectured by Klainerman and Machedon [30] for β in (0,2/7] by adapting and simplifying an argument in Chen and Pavlović [7] which solves the problem for β in (0,1/4) in the absence of a trap.
We study the derivation of the Gibbs measure for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) from many-body quantum thermal states in the high-temperature limit. In this paper, we consider the nonlocal NLS with defocusing and unbounded $L^p$ interaction potentials on $\mathbb{T}^d$ for $d=1,2,3$. This extends the author's earlier joint work with Fröhlich, Knowles, and Schlein, where the regime of defocusing and bounded interaction potentials was considered. When $d=1$, we give an alternative proof of a result previously obtained by Lewin, Nam, and Rougerie. Our proof is based on a perturbative ex…
We consider the 2d and 3d many body Schrödinger equations in the presence of anisotropic switchable quadratic traps. We extend and improve the collapsing estimates in Klainerman-Machedon [24] and Kirkpatrick-Schlein-Staffilani [23]. Together with an anisotropic version of the generalized lens transform in Carles [3], we derive rigorously the cubic NLS with anisotropic switchable quadratic traps in 2d through a modified Elgart-Erdös-Schlein-Yau procedure. For the 3d case, we establish the uniqueness of the corresponding Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy without the assumption of factorized initial dat…
We consider the dynamics of N bosons in one dimension. We assume that the pair interaction is attractive and given by N^{β-1}V(N^β\cdot) where \int V\leqslant 0. We develop new techniques in treating the N-body Hamiltonian so that we overcome the difficulties generated by the attractive interaction and establish new energy estimates. We also prove the optimal 1D collapsing estimate which reduces the regularity requirement in the uniqueness argument by half a derivative. We derive rigorously the one dimensional focusing cubic NLS with a quadratic trap as the N->\infty limit of the N-body dynami…
The Heisenberg dynamics of the energy, momentum, and particle densities for fermions with short-range pair interactions is shown to converge to the compressible Euler equations in the hydrodynamic limit. The pressure function is given by the standard formula from quantum statistical mechanics with the two-body potential under consideration. Our derivation is based on a quantum version of the entropy method and a suitable quantum virial theorem. No intermediate description, such as a Boltzmann equation or semi-classical approximation, is used in our proof. We require some technical conditions o…
In this paper we study the derivation of a certain type of NLS from many-body interactions of bosonic particles. We consider a model with a finite linear combination of $n$-body interactions, where $n \geq 2$ is an integer. We show that the $k$-particle marginal density of the BBGKY hierarchy converges when particle number goes to infinity, and the limit solves a corresponding infinite Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy. We prove the uniqueness of factorized solution to the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy based on a priori space time estimates. The convergence is established by adapting the arguments origi…
We consider a class nonlinear Schrödinger / Gross-Pitaevskii equations (NLS/GP) with a focusing (attractive) nonlinear potential and symmetric double well linear potential. NLS/GP plays a central role in the modeling of nonlinear optical and mean-field quantum many-body phenomena. It is known that there is a critical $L^2$ norm (optical power / particle number) at which there is a symmetry breaking bifurcation of the ground state. We study the rich dynamical behavior near the symmetry breaking point. The source of this behavior in the full Hamiltonian PDE is related to the dynamics of a finite…
We prove that nonlinear Gibbs measures can be obtained from the corresponding many-body, grand-canonical, quantum Gibbs states, in a mean-field limit where the temperature T diverges and the interaction behaves as 1/T. We proceed by characterizing the interacting Gibbs state as minimizing a functional counting the free-energy relatively to the non-interacting case. We then perform an infinite-dimensional analogue of phase-space semiclassical analysis, using fine properties of the quantum relative entropy, the link between quantum de Finetti measures and upper/lower symbols in a coherent state …
We consider the dynamics of $N$ bosons in three dimensions. We assume the pair interaction is given by $N^{3β-1}V(N^{β}\cdot )$ . By studying an associated many-body wave operator, we introduce a BBGKY hierarchy which takes into account all of the interparticle singular correlation structures developed by the many-body evolution from the beginning. Assuming energy conditions on the $N$-body wave function, for $β\in \left( 0,1\right] $, we derive the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy with $2$-body interaction. In particular, we establish that, in the $N\rightarrow \infty $ limit, all $k$-body scatteri…
We consider the focusing 3D quantum many-body dynamic which models a dilute bose gas strongly confined in two spatial directions. We assume that the microscopic pair interaction is attractive and given by $a^{3β-1}V(a^β\cdot)$ where $\int V\leqslant 0$ and $a$ matches the Gross-Pitaevskii scaling condition. We carefully examine the effects of the fine interplay between the strength of the confining potential and the number of particles on the 3D $N$-body dynamic. We overcome the difficulties generated by the attractive interaction in 3D and establish new focusing energy estimates. We study the…
In these lecture notes we discuss recent progress in the rigorous derivation of effective evolution equations for the description of the dynamics of quantum mechanical many-body systems.
We derive the time-dependent dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation from the N-body Schr{ö}dinger equation. More precisely we show a norm approximation for the solution of the many body equation as well as the convergence of its one-body reduced density matrix towards the orthogonal projector onto the solution of the dipolar GP equation. We consider the interpolation regime where interaction potential is scaled like $N^{3β--1} w(N^β(x -- y))$, the range of validity of $β$ depends on the stability of the ground state problem. In particular we can prove the convergence on the one-body density ma…
In this paper, we will obtain a rigorous derivation of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the three-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^3$ from the many-body limit of interacting bosonic systems. This type of result was previously obtained on $\mathbb{R}^3$ in the work of Erdős, Schlein, and Yau \cite{ESY2,ESY3,ESY4,ESY5}, and on $\mathbb{T}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^2$ in the work of Kirkpatrick, Schlein, and Staffilani \cite{KSS}. Our proof relies on an unconditional uniqueness result for the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy at the level of regularity $α=1$, which is proved by using a modif…
We consider the statistical motion of a convex rigid body in a gas of N smaller (spherical) atoms close to thermodynamic equilibrium. Because the rigid body is much bigger and heavier, it undergoes a lot of collisions leading to small deflections. We prove that its velocity is described, in a suitable limit, by an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. The strategy of proof relies on Lanford's arguments [17] together with the pruning procedure from [3] to reach diffusive times, much larger than the mean free time. Furthermore, we need to introduce a modified dynamics to avoid pathological collisions of a…
In this paper, we rigorously derive a Boltzmann equation for mixtures from the many body dynamics of two types of hard sphere gases. We prove that the microscopic dynamics of two gases with different masses and diameters is well defined, and introduce the concept of a two parameter BBGKY hierarchy to handle the non-symmetric interaction of these gases. As a corollary of the derivation, we prove Boltzmann's propagation of chaos assumption for the case of a mixtures of gases.
We derive the Euler equations from quantum dynamics for a class of fermionic many-body systems. We make two types of assumptions. The first type are physical assumptions on the solution of the Euler equations for the given initial data. The second type are a number of reasonable conjectures on the statistical mechanics and dynamics of the Fermion Hamiltonian.
In this paper the Hartree equation is derived from the $N$-body Schr\''odinger equation in the mean-field limit, with convergence rate estimates that are uniform in the Planck constant $\hbar$. Specifically, we consider the two following cases:(a) T\''oplitz initial data and Lipschitz interaction forces, and (b) analytic initial data and interaction potential, over short time intervals independent of $\hbar$. The convergence rates in these two cases are $1/\sqrt{\log\log N}$ and $1/N$ respectively. The treatment of the second case is entirely self-contained and all the constants appearing in t…
We give a rigorous, quantitative derivation of the incompressible Euler equation from the many-body problem for $N$ bosons on $\mathbb{T}^d$ with binary Coulomb interactions in the semiclassical regime. The coupling constant of the repulsive interaction potential is $~1/(\varepsilon^2 N)$, where $\varepsilon \ll 1$ and $N\gg 1$, so that by choosing $\varepsilon=N^{-λ}$, for appropriate $λ>0$, the scaling is supercritical with respect to the usual mean-field regime. For approximately monokinetic initial states with nearly uniform density, we show that the density of the first marginal converges…
We consider a 2D quantum system of $N$ bosons in a trapping potential $|x|^s$, interacting via a pair potential of the form $N^{2β-1} w(N^βx)$. We show that for all $0 \textless{} β\textless{} (s+1)/(s+2)$, the leading order behavior of ground states of the many-body system is described in the large $N$ limit by the corresponding cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger energy functional. Our result covers the focusing case ($w \leq 0$) where even the stability of the many-body system is not obvious. This answers an open question mentioned by X.~Chen and J.~Holmer for harmonic traps ($s=2$). Together wit…
We prove global well-posedness for low regularity data for the $L^2-critical$ defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in 2d. More precisely we show that a global solution exists for initial data in the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\mathbb R^2)$ and any $s>{2/5}$. This improves the previous result of Fang and Grillakis where global well-posedness was established for any $s \geq {1/2}$. We use the $I$-method to take advantage of the conservation laws of the equation. The new ingredient is an interaction Morawetz estimate similar to one that has been used to obtain global well-posedness and scatt…
The KdV equation models the propagation of long waves in dispersive media, while the NLS equation models the dynamics of narrow-bandwidth wave packets consisting of short dispersive waves. A system that couples the two equations to model the interaction of long and short waves seems attractive and such a system has been studied over the last decades. We evaluate the validity of this system, discussing two main problems. First, only the system coupling the linear Schrödinger equation with KdV has been derived in the literature. Second, the time variables appearing in the equations are of a diff…
