We derive the Euler equations from quantum dynamics for a class of fermionic many-body systems. We make two types of assumptions. The first type are physical assumptions on the solution of the Euler equations for the given initial data. The second type are a number of reasonable conjectures on the statistical mechanics and dynamics of the Fermion Hamiltonian.
In this paper, from an investigation of a symmetric hyperbolic system, a prior derivation of the logarithm equation of state is provided. Through a diffeomorphism transforming the classical Euler equations to the symmetric hyperbolic system, we show that the logarithm pressure co-exists with existing barotropic equations of state without applying any physical laws. In this connection, we also establish a local existence of classical solutions for the relativistic Euler equations with the logarithm equation of state.
The Heisenberg dynamics of the energy, momentum, and particle densities for fermions with short-range pair interactions is shown to converge to the compressible Euler equations in the hydrodynamic limit. The pressure function is given by the standard formula from quantum statistical mechanics with the two-body potential under consideration. Our derivation is based on a quantum version of the entropy method and a suitable quantum virial theorem. No intermediate description, such as a Boltzmann equation or semi-classical approximation, is used in our proof. We require some technical conditions o…
A longstanding problem in mathematical physics is the rigorous derivation of the incompressible Euler equation from Newtonian mechanics. Recently, Han-Kwan and Iacobelli arXiv:2006.14924 showed that in the monokinetic regime, one can directly obtain the Euler equation from a system of $N$ particles interacting in $\mathbb{T}^d$, $d\geq 2$, via Newton's second law through a supercritical mean-field limit. Namely, the coupling constant $λ$ in front of the pair potential, which is Coulombic, scales like $N^{-θ}$ for some $θ\in (0,1)$, in contrast to the usual mean-field scaling $λ\sim N^{-1}$. As…
We give an elementary derivation of the Montgomery phase formula for the motion of an Euler top, using only basic facts about the Euler equation and parallel transport on the 2-sphere (whose holonomy is seen to be responsible for the geometric phase). We also give an approximate geometric interpretation of the geometric phase for motions starting close to an unstable equilibrium point.
We derive Euler equations from a Hamiltonian microscopic dynamics. The microscopic system is a one-dimensional disordered harmonic chain, and the dynamics is either quantum or classical. This chain is an Anderson insulator with a symmetry protected mode: Thermal fluctuations are frozen while the low modes ensure the transport of elongation, momentum and mechanical energy, that evolve according to Euler equations in an hyperbolic scaling limit. In this paper, we strengthen considerably our previous results, where we established a limit in mean starting from a local Gibbs state: We now control t…
In 1966, Arnold [1] showed that the Lagrangian flow of ideal incompressible fluids (described by Euler equations) coincide with the geodesic flow on the manifold of volume preserving diffeomorphisms of the fluid domain. Arnold's proof and the subsequent work on this topic rely heavily on the properties of Lie groups and Lie algebras which remain unfamiliar to most fluid dynamicists. In this note, we provide a simple derivation of Arnold's result which only uses the classical methods of calculus of variations. In particular, we show that the Lagrangian flow maps generated by the solutions of th…
In this paper, we review two related aspects of field theory: the modeling of the fields by means of exterior algebra and calculus, and the derivation of the field dynamics, i.e., the Euler-Lagrange equations, by means of the stationary action principle. In contrast to the usual tensorial derivation of these equations for field theories, that gives separate equations for the field components, two related coordinate-free forms of the Euler-Lagrange equations are derived. These alternative forms of the equations, reminiscent of the formulae of vector calculus, are expressed in terms of vector de…
This work presents the variational principles and the intrinsic versions of several equations in field theories, in particular, for the Classical Euler-Lagrange field equations, the implicit Euler-Lagrange field equations and the non-holonomic implicit Euler-Lagrange field equations. The advantages of the variational and intrinsic versions of these equations is that the Lagrangians functions are not necessary regular Lagrangians. We present two examples of this situation: Navier's equations and the non-holonomic Cosserat rod. Finally we comment the Hamiltonian case when the Lagrangian is a hyp…
In this paper we provide a variational derivation of the Euler-Poincaré equations for systems subjected to external forces using an adaptation of the techniques introduced by Galley and others. Moreover, we study in detail the underlying geometry which is related to the notion of Poisson groupoid. Finally, we apply the previous construction to the formal derivation of the variational error for numerical integrators of forced Euler-Poincaré equations and the application of this theory to the derivation of geometric integrators for forced systems.
We give a rigorous, quantitative derivation of the incompressible Euler equation from the many-body problem for $N$ bosons on $\mathbb{T}^d$ with binary Coulomb interactions in the semiclassical regime. The coupling constant of the repulsive interaction potential is $~1/(\varepsilon^2 N)$, where $\varepsilon \ll 1$ and $N\gg 1$, so that by choosing $\varepsilon=N^{-λ}$, for appropriate $λ>0$, the scaling is supercritical with respect to the usual mean-field regime. For approximately monokinetic initial states with nearly uniform density, we show that the density of the first marginal converges…
We formally derive the hydrodynamic limit of a system modelling a bosons gas having a condensed part, made of a quantum kinetic and a Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The limit model, which is a two-fluids Euler system, is approximated by an isentropic system, which is then studied. We find in particular some conditions for the hyperbolicity, and we study the weak solutions. A numerical example is given at the end.
In this paper we explicitly construct local $ν$-Euler derivations $\mathsf E_α= ν\partial_ν+ \Lie{ξ_α} + \mathsf D_α$, where the $ξ_α$ are local, conformally symplectic vector fields and the $\mathsf D_α$ are formal series of locally defined differential operators, for Fedosov star products on a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ by means of which we are able to compute Deligne's characteristic class of these star products. We show that this class is given by $1/ν[ω]+1/ν[Ω]$ where $Ω= \sum_{i=1}^\infty ν^i Ω_i$ is a formal series of closed two-forms on $M$ the cohomology class of which coincides with…
The present paper is motivated by recent mathematical work on the incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, partly having physically problematic results and unrealistic expectations. The Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are rederived here from the roots, starting at the kinetic equation for the distribution function in phase space. The derivation shows that the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations are valid only if the fluid under consideration is an ideal gas, and if deviations from equilibrium are small in a defined sense, thereby excluding fully nonlinear solutions. Furthermore, the d…
This paper contains a rigorous mathematical example of direct derivation of the system of Euler hydrodynamic equations from Hamiltonian equations for N point particle system as N tends to infinity. Direct means that the following standard tools are not used in the proof: stochastic dynamics, thermodynamics, Boltzmann kinetic equations, correlation functions approach by N. N. Bogolyubov.
We study the relativistic Euler equations on the Minkowski spacetime background. We make assumptions on the equation of state and the initial data that are relativistic analogs of the well-known physical vacuum boundary condition, which has played an important role in prior work on the non-relativistic compressible Euler equations. Our main result is the derivation, relative to Lagrangian (also known as co-moving) coordinates, of local-in-time a priori estimates for the solution. The solution features a fluid-vacuum boundary, transported by the fluid four-velocity, along which the hyperbolicit…
By a variational approach in the Lagrangian formalism, we derive the nonlinear integrable two-component Camassa-Holm system (1). We show that the two-component Camassa-Holm system (1) with the plus sign arises as an approximation to the Euler equations of hydrodynamics for propagation of irrotational shallow water waves over a flat bed. The Lagrangian used in the variational derivation is not a metric.
In this note we present the current status of the derivation of a viscous Serre-Green-Naghdi system. For this goal, the flow domain is separated into two regions. The upper region is governed by inviscid Euler equations, while the bottom region (the so-called boundary layer) is described by Navier-Stokes equations. We consider a particular regime linking the Reynolds number and the shallowness parameter. The computations presented in this note are performed in the fully nonlinear regime. The boundary layer flow reduces to a Prantdl-like equation. Further approximations seem to be needed to obt…
We present the fundamental solutions for the spin-1/2 fields propagating in the spacetimes with power type expansion/contraction and the fundamental solution of the Cauchy problem for the Dirac equation. The derivation of these fundamental solutions is based on formulas for the solutions to the generalized Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation, which are obtained by the integral transform approach.
We analyse the existing derivation of the models of non-linear acoustics such as the Kuznetsov equation, the NPE equation and the KZK equation. The technique of introducing a corrector in the derivation ansatz allows to consider the solutions of these equations as approximations of the solution of the initial system (a com-pressible Navier-Stokes/Euler system). The validation of the approximation ansatz is given for the KZK equation case.
A rigorous derivation of the incompressible Euler equations with the no-penetration boundary condition from the Boltzmann equation with the diffuse reflection boundary condition has been a challenging open problem. We settle this open question in the affirmative when the initial data of fluid are well-prepared in a real analytic space, in 3D half space. As a key of this advance we capture the Navier-Stokes equations of $$\textit{viscosity} \sim \frac{\textit{Knudsen number}}{\textit{Mach number}}$$ satisfying the no-slip boundary condition, as an $\textit{intermediary}$ approximation of the Eu…
The action principle by Low [Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 248, 282--287] for the classic Vlasov-Maxwell system contains a mix of Eulerian and Lagrangian variables. This renders the Noether analysis of reparametrization symmetries inconvenient, especially since the well-known energy- and momentum-conservation laws for the system are expressed in terms of Eulerian variables only. While an Euler-Poincaré formulation of Vlasov-Maxwell-type systems, effectively starting with Low's action and using constrained variations for the Eulerian description of particle motion, has been known for a while [J. Math. …
We consider the incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in a three-dimensional moving thin domain. Under the assumption that the moving thin domain degenerates into a two-dimensional moving closed surface as the width of the thin domain goes to zero, we give a heuristic derivation of singular limit equations on the degenerate moving surface of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in the moving thin domain and investigate relations between their energy structures. We also compare the limit equations with the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations on a stationary manifold, which are describ…
A fundamental two-fluid model for describing dynamics of a plasma is the Euler-Poisson system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their self-consistent electrostatic force. Global smooth electron dynamics were constructed in Guo due to dispersive effect of the electric field. In this paper, we construct global smooth irrotational solutions with small amplitude for ion dynamics in the Euler-Poisson system.
We generalize the derivation of the Wallis formula for $π$ from a variational computation of the spectrum of the Hydrogen atom. We obtain infinite product formulas for certain combinations of gamma functions, which include irrational numbers such as $\sqrt 2$ as well as some nested radicals. We also derive Euler's reflection formula for reciprocals of positive even integers. We show that Bohr's correspondence principle allows us to derive our product formulas and the reflection formula without the need for the limit definition of the gamma function.
The interplay between off-shell and on-shell unfolded systems is analysed. The formulation of invariant constraints that put an off-shell system on shell is developed by adding new variables and derivation in the target space, that extends the original $Q$-derivation of the unfolded system to a bicomplex. The analogue of the Euler-Lagrange equations in the unfolded dynamics is suggested. The general class of invariant on-shell equation constraints is defined in cohomological terms. The necessary and sufficient condition for the on-shell equation constraints being Euler-Lagrange for some Lagran…
This paper proves the validity of the joint mean-field and classical limit of the quantum $N$-body dynamics leading to the pressureless Euler-Poisson system for factorized initial data whose first marginal has a monokinetic Wigner measure. The interaction potential is assumed to be the repulsive Coulomb potential. The validity of this derivation is limited to finite time intervals on which the Euler-Poisson system has a smooth solution that is rapidly decaying at infinity. One key ingredient in the proof is an inequality from [S. Serfaty, with an appendix of M. Duerinckx arXiv:1803.08345v3 [ma…
In these lecture notes we discuss recent progress in the rigorous derivation of effective evolution equations for the description of the dynamics of quantum mechanical many-body systems.
The space of Null Lagrangians is the least investigated territory in dynamics since they are identically sent to zero by their Euler-Lagrange operator and thereby having no effects on equations of motion. A humble effort to discover the relevance of these Null Lagrangians in dynamics is made by introducing a generalized procedure (with respect to the recent procedure introduced by the authors of this paper) that takes advantage of the null-ness of these Lagrangians to construct non-standard Lagrangians that represent a range of interesting dynamical systems. By using the generalized procedure,…
For the 2d Euler dynamics of patches, we investigate the convergence to the singular stationary solutions in the presence of a regular strain. It is proved that the rate of merging can be made double exponential for all time.
We study the evolution of a two component fluid consisting of ``blue'' and ``red'' particles which interact via strong short range (hard core) and weak long range pair potentials. At low temperatures the equilibrium state of the system is one in which there are two coexisting phases. Under suitable choices of space-time scalings and system parameters we first obtain (formally) a mesoscopic kinetic Vlasov-Boltzmann equation for the one particle position and velocity distribution functions, appropriate for a description of the phase segregation kinetics in this system. Further scalings then yiel…
This is a rather comprehensive study on the dynamics of Navier-Stokes and Euler equations via a combination of analysis and numerics. We focus upon two main aspects: (a). zero viscosity limit of the spectra of linear Navier-Stokes operator, (b). heteroclinics conjecture for Euler equation, its numerical verification, Melnikov integral, and simulation and control of chaos. Besides Navier-Stokes and Euler equations, we also study two models of them.
We review some recent results concerning the derivation of effective evolution equations from first principle quantum dynamics. In particular, we discuss the derivation of the Hartree equation for mean field systems and the derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the time evolution of Bose-Einstein condensates.
Defining complexity in quantum field theory is a difficult task, and the main challenge concerns going beyond free models and associated Gaussian states and operations. One take on this issue is to consider conformal field theories in 1+1 dimensions and our work is a comprehensive study of state and operator complexity in the universal sector of their energy-momentum tensor. The unifying conceptual ideas are Euler-Arnold equations and their integro-differential generalization, which guarantee well-posedness of the optimization problem between two generic states or transformations of interest. …
Irreversible processes play a major role in the description and prediction of atmospheric dynamics. In this paper, we present a variational derivation of the evolution equations for a moist atmosphere with rain process and subject to the irreversible processes of viscosity, heat conduction, diffusion, and phase transition. This derivation is based on a general variational formalism for nonequilibrium thermodynamics which extends Hamilton's principle to incorporates irreversible processes. It is valid for any state equation and thus also covers the case of the atmosphere of other planets. In th…
Several hydrodynamic models the atomic Bose-Einstein condensate beyond the mean-field approximation are discussed together from one point of view. All these models are derived from microscopic quantum description. The derivation is made within the many-particle quantum hydrodynamics method suggested by L. Kuz'menkov. The derivation is demonstrated and discussed for the mean-field regime revealing the Gross-Pitaevskii equation as the simplest illustration. It appears in the first order by the interaction radius. Generalization of the hydrodynamic Euler equation obtained in the third order by th…
A unified formulation of rigid body dynamics based on Gauss principle is proposed. The Lagrange, Kirchhoff and Newton-Euler equations are seen to arise from different choices of the quasicoordinates in the velocity space. The group-theoretical aspects of the method are discussed.
We consider a one-dimensional unpinned chain of harmonic oscillators with random masses. We prove that after hyperbolic scaling of space and time the distributions of the elongation, momentum and energy converge to the solution of the Euler equations. Anderson localization decouples the mechanical modes from the thermal modes, allowing the closure of the energy conservation equation even out of thermal equilibrium. This example shows that the derivation of Euler equations rests primarily on scales separation and not on ergodicity. Furthermore, it follows from our proof that the temperature pro…
