The unique isomeric transition at 7.8 eV in $~^{229}\mathrm{Th}$ has a magnetic dipole ($M1$) and an electric quadrupole ($E2$) multipole mixing. So far, the $E2$ component has been widely disregarded. Here, we investigate the nuclear physics nature and the impact of the $E2$ decay channel for the nuclear coupling to the atomic shell based on the newest theoretical predictions for the corresponding reduced nuclear transition probabilities. Our results show that the contribution of the $E2$ channel is dominant or at least of the same order of magnitude for internal conversion or electronic bridge transitions involving the atomic orbitals $7p$, $6d$ and $5f$. Notable exceptions are the internal conversion of the $7s$ electron and the electronic bridge between the electronic states $7s$ and $7p$, for which the $M1$ component dominates by two to three orders of magnitude. Caution is therefore advised when considering isomeric excitation or decay via nuclear coupling to the atomic shell, as the involved orbitals determine which multipole transition component dominates.
The direct transition-matrix approach to determination of the electric polarizabilities of quantum bound systems developed in my recent work is applied to study the electric multipole polarizabilities of a two-particle bound complex with a central interaction between the particles. Expressions for the electric quadrupole and octupole polarizabilities of the deuteron are derived and their values in the case of the S-wave separable interaction potential are calculated.
We analyze the one-photon mechanism of $e^+e^-$ pair production in the collision of nonrelativistic nuclei. The contribution of electric quadrupole radiation of virtual photon to the corresponding cross section is found. The effect of the finite nuclear size is considered in detail. A comparison is made with the contribution of electric dipole radiation of virtual photon and with the contribution of the two-photon pair production mechanism. It is shown that the contribution of electric quadrupole radiation is dominant in a wide range of relative velocities. The cross section for the production…
Using a covariant spectator constituent quark model we predict an electric quadrupole moment -0.043 efm^2 and a magnetic octupole moment -0.0035 efm^3 for the Delta+ excited state of the nucleon.

Isotope shifts of the mean square radii (MSR) and electric quadrupole moments of even-even nuclei with 20< Z < 98$ are calculated using a dynamical microscopic model. A single particle Nilsson potential with the Seo set of correction term parameters, the pairing forces in the BCS formalism and a long range interaction in the local approximation are used. A collective hamiltonian is obtained using a generator coordinate method (GCM) with the gaussian overlap approximation (GOA). A potential energy of the nucleus consists of a microscopic-macroscopic Strutinsky energy and a zero point vibrationa…
The core polarization effect for the electric quadrupole moment of the neutron-rich $^{31}$Al, $^{33}$Al and $^{35}$Al isotopes in the vicinity of the island of inversion are investigated by means of the microscopic particle-vibration coupling model in which the Skyrme Hartee-Fock-Bogoliubov and quasiparticle-random-phase approximation are used to calculate the single-quasiparticle wave functions and the excitation modes. It is found that the polarization charge for the proton $1d_{5/2}$ hole state in $^{33}$Al is quite sensitive to coupling to the neutrons in the $pf$-shell associated with th…
The nuclear quadruple moment is a fundamental character associated to the nuclei, this moment is related to the not purely spherical distribution in the nuclei, indeed its measure allows us to survey the geometric deformation of the nuclei of its spherical shape. The measurement methods of the quadruple moment is to study the electrical energy hyperfine interaction between the quadruple moment and the electric field gradient due to atomics electrons, one of the methods is the nuclear quadruple resonance NQR which is observed at the transitions between energy levels splits by the effect of the …
Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) is a gapless collective excitation of quark-gluon plasma in the presence of external magnetic field that stems from the interplay of Chiral Magnetic (CME) and Chiral Separation Effects (CSE); it is composed by the waves of the electric and chiral charge densities coupled by the axial anomaly. We consider CMW at finite baryon density and find that it induces the electric quadrupole moment of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions: the "poles" of the produced fireball (pointing outside of the reaction plane) acquire additional positive electric charge,…
In the hydrodynamic model description of heavy ion collisions, the elliptic flow $v_2$ and triangular flow $v_3$ are sensitive to the quadrupole deformation $β_2$ and octupole deformation $β_3$ of the colliding nuclei. The relations between $v_n$ and $β_n$ have recently been clarified and were found to follow a simple parametric form. The STAR Collaboration have just published precision $v_n$ data from isobaric $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru and $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr collisions, where they observe large differences in central collisions $v_{2,\mathrm{Ru}}>v_{2,\mathrm{Zr}}$ and $v_{3,\mathrm{Ru}}<v_{3,\mat…
Meaningful predictions for electric quadrupole (E2) observables from ab initio nuclear theory are necessary, if the ab initio description of collective correlations is to be confronted with experiment, as well as to provide predictive power for unknown E2 observables. However, converged results for E2 observables are notoriously challenging to obtain in ab initio no-core configuration interaction (NCCI) approaches. Matrix elements of the E2 operator are sensitive to the large-distance tails of the nuclear wave function, which converge slowly in an oscillator basis expansion. Similar convergenc…
Eigenfunctions of the collective Bohr Hamiltonian with the Morse potential have been obtained by using the Asymptotic Iteration Method (AIM) for both gamma-unstable and rotational structures. B(E2) transition rates have been calculated and compared to experimental data. Overall good agreement is obtained for transitions within the ground state band, while some interband transitions appear to be systematically underpredicted in gamma-unstable nuclei and overpredicted in rotational nuclei.
The electric quadrupole response is investigated theoretically by HFB and QPM calculations along the Sn isotopic chain with special emphasis on excitations above the first collective state and below the particle threshold. Depending on the asymmetry, additional strength clustering as a group of states similar to the known PDR mode is found. The spectral distributions and electric response functions are discussed. The transition densities of these Pygmy Quadrupole Resonances (PQR) states are closely related to the neutron excess and showing special features being compatible with an oscillation …
We report the value of the electric quadrupole moment of $^{209}$Bi extracted from the atomic data. For this, we performed electronic structure calculations for the ground $^4S^o_{3/2}$ and excited $^2P^o_{3/2}$ states of atomic Bi using the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian and the Fock space coupled cluster method with single, double, and full triple amplitudes for the three-particle Fock space sector. The value of the quadrupole moment of $^{209}$Bi, $Q(^{209}$Bi$)=-418(6)$~mb, derived from the resulting electric field gradient values and available atomic hyperfine splittings is in excellent …
Using the interaction $Q \cdot Q ~+~ xV_{S.O.}$ where $V_{S.O.}$ is a two-body spin-orbit interaction, we study the effects of varying x on the static electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments of the $2^+_1$ and $2^+_2$ states of $^{10}Be$. This is done both in the valence space $s^4p^6$ and in a larger space in which 2 $\hbar ω$ excitations are allowed. In the former case, for x=0, we have the Wigner Supermultiplet limit in which the $2^+_1$ and $2^+_2$ states are degenerate and correspond to K=0 and K=2 rotational states, with equal and opposite static quadrupole moments. Turning on th…
In heavy ion collisions, elliptic flow $v_2$ and radial flow, characterized by event-wise average transverse momentum $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$, are related to the shape and size of the overlap region, which are sensitive to the shape of colliding atomic nuclei. The Pearson correlation coefficient between $v_2$ and $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$, $ρ_2$, was found to be particularly sensitive to the quadrupole deformation parameter $β$ that is traditionally measured in low energy experiments. Built on earlier insight that the prolate deformation $β>0$ reduces the $ρ_2$ in ultra-central collisions (UCC), we show t…
Analytical expressions of the wave functions are derived for a Bohr Hamiltonian with the Manning{Rosen potential in the cases of γ-unstable nuclei and axially symmetric prolate deformed ones with γ=0. By exploiting the results we have obtained in a recent work on the same theme Ref. [1], we have calculated the B(E2) transition rates for 34 γ-unstable and 38 rotational nuclei and compared to experimental data, revealing a qualitative agreement with the experiment and phase transitions within the ground state band and showing also that the Manning-Rosen potential is more appropriate for such cal…
We calculate the A and B hyperfine constants for the low-lying states of 229Th3+ using a high-precision relativistic all-order approach. By combining these calculations with measurements of the 6d and 5f hyperfine constants [C. J. Campbell et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 223001 (2011)], we determine the magnetic dipole μ=0.360(7)μ_B and the electric-quadrupole Q=3.11(6) eb moments of the 229Th nucleus. Our value for μis five times more accurate and is 22% smaller than the best previous value μ=0.46(4) μ_B [S. Gerstenkorn et al., J. Phys. (Paris) 35, 483 (1974)], while our value for Q is the same…
Electric quadrupole (E2) matrix elements provide a measure of nuclear deformation and related collective structure. Ground-state quadrupole moments in particular are known to high precision in many p-shell nuclei. While the experimental electric quadrupole moment only measures the proton distribution, both proton and neutron quadrupole moments are needed to probe proton-neutron asymmetry in the nuclear deformation. We seek insight into the relation between these moments through the ab initio no-core configuration interaction (NCCI), or no-core shell model (NCSM), approach. Converged ab initio …
We present the spatial distributions of electromagnetic fields ($\bf E$ and $\bf B$) and electromagnetic anomaly $ \bf E \cdot B$ in Au+Au collisions at the RHIC energy $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV based on a multi-phase transport model. A dipolar distribution of $\bf E \cdot B$ is observed in non-central collisions. We find that the coupling of the $\bf E \cdot B$ dipole and magnetic field $\bf B$ can induce an electric quadrupole moment which can further lead to the difference in elliptic flows between positive charged particles and negative charged particles through final interactions. The centrality…
Second-order processes in physics is a research topic focusing attention from several fields worldwide including, for example, non-linear quantum electrodynamics with high-power lasers, neutrinoless double-$β$ decay, and stimulated atomic two-photon transitions. For the electromagnetic nuclear interaction, the observation of the competitive double-$γ$ decay from $^{137\mathrm{m}}$Ba has opened up the nuclear structure field for detailed investigation of second-order processes through the manifestation of off-diagonal nuclear polarizability. Here we confirm this observation with an $8.7σ$ signi…
Models based on $SU(6)$ symmetry breaking and large $N_c$ limit provide relations between the pion cloud contributions to the $γ^\ast N \to Δ(1232)$ quadrupole form factors, electric ($G_E$) and Coulomb ($G_C$), and the neutron electric form factor $G_{En}$, suggesting that those form factors are dominated by the same physical processes. Those relations are improved in order to satisfy a fundamental constraint between the electric and Coulomb quadrupole form factors in the long wavelength limit, when the photon three-momentum vanishes (Siegert's theorem). Inspired by those relations, we study …
The Omega- has an extremely long lifetime, and is the most stable of the baryons with spin 3/2. Therefore the Omega- magnetic moment is very accurately known. Nevertheless, its electric quadrupole moment was never measured, although estimates exist in different formalisms. In principle, lattice QCD simulations provide at present the most appropriate way to estimate the Omega- form factors, as function of the square of the transferred four-momentum, Q2, since it describes baryon systems at the physical mass for the strange quark. However, lattice QCD form factors, and in particular GE2, are det…
We study the convergence of bound-state quadrupole moments in finite harmonic oscillator spaces. We derive an expression for the infrared extrapolation for the quadrupole moment of a nucleus and benchmark our results using different model interactions for the deuteron. We find good agreement between the analytically derived and numerically obtained convergence behavior. We also derive an extrapolation formula for electric quadrupole transitions and find good agreement with the numerical calculation of a simple system.
In this report, electric quadrupole corrections to the two neutron removal cross section measured in heavy ion collisions are estimated for $^{197}$Au and $^{59}$Co targets. The quadrupole process is assumed to proceed primarily through excitation of the giant isovector quadrupole resonance, which then decays by neutron emission. For $^{59}$Co, the contribution from E2 radiation is found to be small, while for $^{197}$Au we find the quadrupole contribution resolves the discrepancy between experiment and the simple predictions of the Weissacker-Williams virtual photon method.
Nuclei exhibit both single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, with the latter often subdivided into vibrational and rotational motions. Experimentally identifying the relative roles of these collective modes is extremely challenging, particularly in the face of possible shape coexistence. Model-independent, invariant quantities describing the deformation of a nucleus in the intrinsic frame have long been known but their determination potentially requires a large quantity of experimental data to achieve convergence. Through comparison with the nuclear shell model, the question of conve…
The electric quadrupole moment of the 33Al20 ground state, located at the border of the island of inversion, was obtained using continuous-beam beta-detected nuclear quadrupole resonance (beta-NQR). From the measured quadrupole coupling constant Q = 2.31(4) MHz in an alpha-Al2O3 crystal, a precise value for the electric quadrupole moment is extracted: Qs= 141(3) mb. A comparison with large-scale shell model calculations shows that 33Al has at least 50% intruder configurations in the ground state wave function, favoring the excitation of two neutrons across the N = 20 shell gap. 33Al therefore …
The magnetic dipole, the electric quadrupole and the Coulomb quadrupole amplitudes for the transition $γN\to Δ$ are evaluated both in quenched lattice QCD at $β=6.0$ and using two dynamical Wilson fermions simulated at $β=5.6$. The dipole transition form factor is accurately determined at several values of momentum transfer. On the lattices studied in this work, the electric quadrupole amplitude is found to be non-zero yielding a negative value for the ratio, $ R_{EM}$, of electric quadrupole to magnetic dipole amplitudes at three values of momentum transfer.
