Nuclei exhibit both single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, with the latter often subdivided into vibrational and rotational motions. Experimentally identifying the relative roles of these collective modes is extremely challenging, particularly in the face of possible shape coexistence. Model-independent, invariant quantities describing the deformation of a nucleus in the intrinsic frame have long been known but their determination potentially requires a large quantity of experimental data to achieve convergence. Through comparison with the nuclear shell model, the question of convergence will be addressed. Shell-model calculations performed in the $sd$- and $pf$-shell model spaces are used to determine electric-quadrupole matrix elements for a multitude of low-lying states. Relative contributions to the rotationally invariant quantities from multiple states can therefore be determined. It is found that on average, the inclusion of four intermediate states results in the leading-order invariant, $\left<Q^2\right>$, converging to within 10% of its true value and the triaxiality term, $\left<\cos{\left(3δ\right)}\right>$, converging to its true value, though some variance remains. Higher-order quantities relating to the softness of the nuclear shape are found to converge more slowly. The convergence of quadrupole rotationally invariant sum rules was quantified in the $sd$- and $pf$-shell model spaces and indicates the challenge inherent in a full determination of nuclear shape. The present study is limited to relatively small valence spaces. Larger spaces, such as the rare-earth region, potentially offer faster convergence.
Transition probabilities of the ground-state bands in $γ$-soft nuclei are studied for the first time using the triaxial projected shell model approach. It is observed that the angular-momentum dependence of the transition quadrupole moment $Q_t$ is related to the triaxial deformation of the nuclear mean-field potential. The introduction of the $γ$-degree of freedom in the shell model basis is shown to have a little influence on the {\it constant} behavior of the low-spin $Q_t$ in a well-deformed nucleus. However, the {\it increasing} collectivity with spin for the low-spin states in a $γ$-soft…
The influence of quadrupole and hexadecapole residual interactions on rotational bands is investigated in a single-j shell model. An exact shell-model diagonalization of quadrupole-plus-hexadecapole interaction can sometimes produce a staggering of energy levels in the yrast bands.
The effect of the ``$B$'' term in the interaction $-χQ\cdot Q(1+B\vecτ(1)\cdot \vecτ(2))$, which was previously considered in the $0p$ shell, is now studied in a larger space which includes $ΔN=2$ excitations. We still get a collapse of low-lying states below the conventional $J=0^+$ ground state when $B$ is made sufficiently negative.
Electric quadrupole (E2) matrix elements provide a measure of nuclear deformation and related collective structure. Ground-state quadrupole moments in particular are known to high precision in many p-shell nuclei. While the experimental electric quadrupole moment only measures the proton distribution, both proton and neutron quadrupole moments are needed to probe proton-neutron asymmetry in the nuclear deformation. We seek insight into the relation between these moments through the ab initio no-core configuration interaction (NCCI), or no-core shell model (NCSM), approach. Converged ab initio …
Temperature and angular momentum dependence of the quadrupole deformation is studied in the middle of the sd-shell for 28Si and 27Si isotopes using the spherical shell model approach. The shell model calculations have been performed using the standard USD interaction and the canonical partition function constructed from the calculated eigen-solutions. It is shown that the extracted average quadrupole moments show a transitional behavior as a function of temperature and the inferred transitional temperature is shown to vary with angular-momentum. The quadrupole deformation of the individual eig…
An interaction $-χQ\cdot Q(1+B\vecτ(1)\cdot \vecτ(2))$ is used in a shell model calculation for $^{10}Be$. Whereas for $B=0$ the $2_1^+$ state is two-fold degenerate, introducing a negative $B$ causes an `isovector' $2^+$ state to come down to zero energy at $B=-0.67$ and an $S=1~L=1$ triplet ($J=0^+,~1^+,~2^+$) to come down to zero energy at $B=-0.73$. These are undesirable properties, but a large negative $B$ is apparently needed to fit the energy of the isovector giant quadrupole resonance.
We report on the first experimental study of quadrupole collectivity in the very neutron-rich nuclei \nuc{47,48}{Ar} using intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation. These nuclei are located along the path from doubly-magic Ca to collective S and Si isotopes, a critical region of shell evolution and structural change. The deduced $B(E2)$ transition strengths are confronted with large-scale shell-model calculations in the $sdpf$ shell using the state-of-the-art SDPF-U and EPQQM effective interactions. The comparison between experiment and theory indicates that a shell-model description of Ar isoto…
In the rotational model for a K=0 band in an even-even nucleus, there is a single parameter--Q_0, the intrinsic quadrupole moment. All B(E2)'s in the band and all static quadrupole moments are expressed in terms of this one parameter. In shell-model calculations, this does not have to be the case. In this work, we consider ground-state bands in {44}Ti, {46}Ti, {48}Ti, {48}Cr, and {50}Cr. We have two models. First, we use a Surface Delta Interaction with degenerate single-particle energies (SDI-deg). We compare this with results of a shell-model calculation using the standard interaction FPD6 a…
We discuss the ability of the generator coordinate method (GCM) to select collective states in microscopic calculations. The model studied is a single-$j$ shell with hamiltonian containing the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. Quadrupole collective excitations are constructed by means of the quadrupole single-particle operator. Lowest collective bands for $j$=31/2 and particle numbers $N$=4,6,8,10,12, and $14$ are found. For lower values of $j$, exact solutions are obtained and compared with the GCM results.
The three main contributions to the nuclear Hamiltonian - monopole, quadrupole and pairing - are analyzed in a shell model context. The first has to be treated phenomenologically, while the other two can be reliably extracted from the realistic interactions. Due to simple scaling properties, the realistic quadrupole and pairing interactions eliminate the tendency to collapse of their conventional counterparts, while retaining their basic simplicity.
We define the "quadrupole ratio" r_{Q}=\dfrac{Q_{0}(S)}{Q_{0}(B)} where Q_{0}(S) is the intrinsic quadrupole moment obtained from the static quadrupole moment of the 2_{1}^{+} state of an even-even nucleus and Q_{0}(B) the intrinsic quadrupole moment obtained from B(E2)_{0\rightarrow2} . In both cases we assume a simple rotational formula connecting the rotating frame to the laboratory frame. The quantity r_{Q} would be one if the rotational model were perfect and the energy ratio E(4)/E(2) would be 10/3. In the simple vibrational model, r_{Q} would be zero and E(4)/E(2) would be two. There ar…
In the frame of the algebraic Riemann Rotational Model one computes the longitudinal, transverse and toroidal multipoles corresponding to the excitations of low-lying levels in the ground state band of several even-even nuclei by inelastic electron scattering (e,e'). Related to these transitions a new quantity, which accounts for the deviations from the Siegert theorem, is introduced. The intimate connection between the nuclear vorticity and the dynamic toroidal quadrupole moment is underlined. Inelastic differential cross-sections calculated at backscattering angles shows the dominancy of tor…
Large-amplitude dynamics of axial and triaxial quadrupole deformation in 24,26Mg, 24Ne, and 28Si is investigated on the basis of the quadrupole collective Hamiltonian constructed with use of the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus the local quasiparticle random phase approximation method. The calculation reproduces well properties of the ground rotational bands, and beta and gamma vibrations in 24Mg and 28Si. The gamma-softness in the collective states of 26Mg and 24Ne are discussed. Contributions of the neutrons and protons to the transition properties are also analyzed in connection wit…
Shell model calculations with the neutron effective charge as single free parameter describe well the \bet and \bef rates for $N\le 64$ in the Cd and Sn isotopes. The former exhibit weak permanent deformation corroborating the prediction of a pseudo SU3 symmetry, which remains of heuristic value in the latter, though the pairing force erodes the quadrupole dominance. Calculations in $10^7$ and $10^{10}$-dimensional spaces exhibit almost identical patterns: A vindication of the shell model. For $N\ge 64$ quadrupole dominance is accentuated in the Cd isotopes and gives way to seniority dominance…
The quadrupole vibrational modes of neutron-rich $N$=28 isotones ($^{48}$Ca, $^{46}$Ar, $^{44}$S and $^{42}$Si) are investigated using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with several choice of energy density functionals, including nuclear pairing correlation. It is found that the quenching of $N$=28 shell gap and the proton holes in the $sd$-shell trigger quadrupole correlation and increase the collectivity of the low-lying 2$^+$ state in $^{46}$Ar. It is also found that the pairing correlation plays an important role to increase the collectivity. We also demonst…
We investigate the low-lying 2$^+$ states of $N=28$ isotones ($^{48}$Ca, $^{46}$Ar, $^{44}$S and $^{42}$Si) with using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory in which the pairing is taken into account self-consistently. The quadrupole mode with very small excitation energies emerges in $^{46}$Ar, $^{44}$S and $^{42}$Si due to the strong quadrupole correlations triggered by the quenching of the $N=28$ shell gap. The importance of the quadrupole correlations between the protons and neutrons, and the role of the pairing correlation to reinforce the lowest 2$^+$ mode are…
A collective bands of positive and negative parity could be composed of the vibrations and rotations. The rotations of the octupole configurations can be based either on the axial or the non-axial octupole vibrations. A consistent approach to the quadrupole-octupole collective vibrations coupled with the rotational motion enables to distinguish between various scenarios of disappearance of the E2 transitions in negative-parity bands. The here presented theoretical estimates are compared with the recent experimental energies and transition probabilities in and between the ground-state and low-e…
The quon algebra, which interpolates between the Bose and Fermi algebras and depends on a free paramenter $q$, is used to generate a deformed Dyson boson expansion of the quadrupole operator. Then we obtain a quadrupole-quadrupole hamiltonian, for a single j-shell, in terms of this deformed bosonic operator. The hamiltonian is diagonalized and its eigenvalues are compared with the ones obtained from the fermionic quadrupole-quadrupole hamiltonian. The deformation parameter helps in achieving the correct energy levels, what cannot be encountered in practice with the usual non-deformed Dyson exp…
We perform Shell Model Monte Carlo calculations of selected N=Z pf-shell nuclei with a schematic hamiltonian containing isovector pairing and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions. Compared to realistic interactions, this hamiltonian does not give rise to the SMMC ``sign problem'', while at the same time resembles essential features of the realistic interactions. We study pairing correlations in the ground states of N=Z nuclei and investigate the thermal dependence of selected observables for the odd-odd nucleus Co54 and the even-even nuclei Zn60 and Ni60. Comparison of the present results to tho…
Quasi-elastic (QEL) scattering measurements have been performed using $^{28}$Si projectile off a $^{90}$Zr target at energies around the Coulomb barrier. A Bayesian analysis within the framework of coupled channels (CC) calculations is performed in a large parameter space of quadrupole and hexadecapole deformations ($β_{2}$ and $β_{4}$) of $^{28}$Si. Our results clearly show that $^{28}$Si is an oblate shaped nucleus with $β_{2}$=-$0.38 \pm 0.01$ which is in excellent agreement with electromagnetic probes. A precise value of hexadecapole deformation for $^{28}$Si, $β_{4}$=+$0.03 \pm 0.01$, alo…
A realistic shell-model study is performed for neutron-deficient tin isotopes up to mass A=108. All shell-model ingredients, namely two-body matrix elements, single-particle energies, and effective charges for electric quadrupole transition operators, have been calculated by way of the many-body perturbation theory, starting from a low-momentum interaction derived from the high-precision CD-Bonn free nucleon-nucleon potential. The focus has been put on the enhanced quadrupole collectivity of these nuclei, which is testified by the observed large B(E2;0+ -> 2+)s. Our results evidence the crucia…
In this paper, eit is shown for a single-$j$ shell that the intrinsic excitations induced by the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction can be viewed as that due to the inverted surface-delta interaction whose multipole-pairing component with the largest spin is the dominant term and is attractive. This allow us to trace the origin of the recently introduced optimum pair description of rotation and leads naturally to analytical expressions for the rotational energies for the various bands in a single $j$-shell with the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction.
Semiclassical analysis of the shell structure for a reflection-asymmetric deformed oscillator potential with irrational frequency ratio $ω_\perp/ω_z=\sqrt{3}$ is presented. Strong shell effects associated with bifurcations of short periodic orbits are found, which occur for a combination of quadrupole and octupole deformations.
We present a comprehensive study on the low-lying states of neutron-rich Er, Yb, Hf, and W isotopes across the $N=126$ shell with a multi-reference covariant density functional theory. Beyond mean-field effects from shape mixing and symmetry restoration on the observables that are relevant for understanding quadrupole collectivity and underlying shell structure are investigated. The general features of low-lying states in closed-shell nuclei are retained in these four isotopes around $N=126$, even though the shell gap is overall quenched by about 30\% with the beyond mean-field effects. These …
The electric quadrupole moment of the 33Al20 ground state, located at the border of the island of inversion, was obtained using continuous-beam beta-detected nuclear quadrupole resonance (beta-NQR). From the measured quadrupole coupling constant Q = 2.31(4) MHz in an alpha-Al2O3 crystal, a precise value for the electric quadrupole moment is extracted: Qs= 141(3) mb. A comparison with large-scale shell model calculations shows that 33Al has at least 50% intruder configurations in the ground state wave function, favoring the excitation of two neutrons across the N = 20 shell gap. 33Al therefore …
We define the ``quadrupole ratio'' $r_Q = \dfrac{Q_0(S)}{Q_0(B)}$ where $Q_0(S)$ is the intrinsic quadrupole moment obtained from the static quadrupole moment of the $2_1^+$ state of an even-even nucleus and $Q_0(B)$ the intrinsic quadrupole moment obtained from $B(E2)_{0 \to 2}$. In both cases we assume a simple rotational formula connecting the rotating frame to the laboratory frame. The quantity $r_Q$ would be one if the rotational model were perfect and the energy ratio $E(4)/E(2)$ would be 10/3. In the simple vibrational model, $r_Q$ would be zero and $E(4)/E(2)$ would be two. There are s…
In this work, we examine critically the relation between orbital magnetic dipole (scissors mode) strength and quadrupole deformation properties. Assuming a simple K=0 ground state band in an even-even nucleus, the quantities Q(2^+_1) (i.e., the static quadrupole moment) and B(E2)_{0_1 \to 2_1} both are described by a single parameter--the intrinsic quadrupole moment Q_0. In the shell model, we can operationally define Q_0(Static) and Q_0(BE2) and see if they are the same. Following a brief excursion to the sd shell, we perform calculations in the fp shell. The nuclei we consider ({44,46,48}Ti …
We perform the four-body calculation of the hyperfine structure in the first rotational state $J=1$ of the H$_2$, D$_2$, and HD molecules and determine the accurate value for the deuteron electric quadrupole moment $Q_d = 0.285\,699(15)(18)$ fm$^2$ in significant disagreement with former spectroscopic determinations. Our results for the hyperfine parameters agree very well with the currently most accurate molecular-beam magnetic resonance measurement performed several decades ago by N.F. Ramsey and coworkers. They also indicate the significance of previously neglected nonadiabatic effects. Mor…
Using the interaction $Q \cdot Q ~+~ xV_{S.O.}$ where $V_{S.O.}$ is a two-body spin-orbit interaction, we study the effects of varying x on the static electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments of the $2^+_1$ and $2^+_2$ states of $^{10}Be$. This is done both in the valence space $s^4p^6$ and in a larger space in which 2 $\hbar ω$ excitations are allowed. In the former case, for x=0, we have the Wigner Supermultiplet limit in which the $2^+_1$ and $2^+_2$ states are degenerate and correspond to K=0 and K=2 rotational states, with equal and opposite static quadrupole moments. Turning on th…
We perform shell model calculations using a quadrupole-quadrupole interaction (Q.Q) in single a j shell space. We show that this one-parameter interaction is a good predictor of where nuclear isomerism occurs and where it does not occur. The limitations of this interaction are also discussed. We then include other interactions e.g. in the f_{7/2} shell those obtained from the (local) spectrum of a 2 particle system and then from a 2 hole system. In the g_{9/2}where there is insufficient empirical data from the 2 hole system and so various empirical interactions are used.
Quadrupole and octupole softness in the even-even N=Z nucleus 64Ge is studied on the spherical shell model basis. We carry out the shell model calculation using the pairing plus quadrupole (QQ) plus octupole (OO) interaction with monopole corrections. It is shown that 64Ge is an unstable nucleus with respect to both the quadrupole and octupole deformations, which is consistent with the previous discussions predicting the gamma softness and octupole instability. It is demonstrated that proton-neutron part QpQn of the QQ interaction is important for the gamma softness or triaxiality.
With nucleons occupying an oscillator shell $η$, there are $2^{η/2}$ number of $SU(3)$ algebras; $η/2$ is the integer part of $η/2$. Analyzing the first non trivial situation with four $SU(3)$ algebras in $(sdg)$ space, demonstrated recently is that they generate quite different quadrupole properties though they all generate the same spectrum. More complex situation is with eight $SU(3)$ algebras in $(sdgi)$ space. In the present work, quadrupole properties generated by these eight algebras are analyzed first using the more analytically tractable interacting boson model. In addition, shell mod…
We perform shell model calculations in odd-odd nuclei using a quadrupole-quadrupole interaction and single-particle splittings chosen so as to obtain the SU(3) results. Elliott had shown that such an interaction gives rotational bands for which the energies go as I(I+1). This is certainly true for eve-even and for odd-even or even-odd nuclei with $K\neq 1/2$. We have looked at odd-odd nuclei e.g $^{22}Na$ and found somewhat different behaviour. In $^{22}Na$ the $I=1^+_1 T=0$ and $I=0^+_1 T=1$ states are degenerate, and a rotational band built on the $I=0^+_1 T=1$ state behaves in a normal fash…
Damping of rotational motion in superdeformed Hg and Dy-region nuclei is studied by means of cranked shell model diagonalization. It is shown that a shell oscillation in single-particle alignments affects significantly properties of rotational damping. Onset properties of damping and damping width for Hg are quite different from those for Dy-region superdeformed nuclei.
The simplicity in the nuclear quadrupole moments reported recently in $^{107-129}$Cd, i.e., a linear increase of the ${11/2}^-$ quadrupole moments, is investigated microscopically with the covariant density functional theory. Using the newly developed functional PC-PK1, the quadrupole moments as well as their linear increase tendency with the neutron number are excellently reproduced without any {\it ad hoc} parameters. The core polarization is found to be very important and contributes almost half of the quadrupole moments. The simplicity of the linear increase is revealed to be due to the pa…
The microscopic structure of neutron-rich sd-shell nuclei is investigated by using the spherical shell-model in the sd-pf valence space with the extended pairing plus quadrupole-quadrupole forces accompanied by the monopole interaction (EPQQM). The calculation reproduces systematically the known energy levels for even-even and odd-mass nuclei including the recent data for 43S, 46S and 47Ar. In particular, the erosion of the N=28 shell closure in 42Si can be explained. Our EPQQM results are compared with other shell-model calculations with the SDPF-NR and SDPF-U effective interactions.
The rotational bands in nuclei with $Z \approx 100$ are investigated systematically by using a cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method, in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. By fitting the experimental single-particle spectra in these nuclei, a new set of Nilsson parameters ($κ$ and $μ$) and deformation parameters ($\varepsilon_2$ and $\varepsilon_4$) are proposed. The experimental kinematic moments of inertia for the rotational bands in even-even, odd-$A$ and odd-odd nuclei, and the bandhead energies …
Recently, charge radii and ground-state electromagnetic moments of Li and Be isotopes were measured precisely. We have performed large-scale ab initio no-core shell model calculations for these isotopes using high-precision nucleon-nucleon potentials. The isotopic trends of our computed charge radii and quadrupole and magnetic-dipole moments are in good agreement with experimental results with the exception of the 11Li charge radius. The magnetic moments are in particular well described, whereas the absolute magnitudes of the quadrupole moments are about 10% too small. The small magnitude of t…
A systematic study of the yrast-band structure for the proton-rich, even-even mass-80 nuclei is carried out using projected shell model approach. We describe the the energy spectra, transition quadrupole moments and gyromagnetic factors. The observed variations in energy spectra and transition quadrupole moments in this mass region are discussed in terms of the configuration mixing of the projected deformed Nilsson states as a function of shell filling.
The Projected Shell Model is a shell model theory built up over a deformed BCS mean field. Ground state and excited bands in even-even nuclei are obtained through diagonalization of a pairing plus quadrupole Hamiltonian in an angular momentum projected 0-, 2-, and 4-quasiparticle basis. The residual quadrupole-quadrupole interaction strength is fixed self-consistently with the deformed mean field and the pairing constants are the same used in constructing the quasiparticle basis. Taking $^{160}Dy$ as an example, we calculate low-lying states and compare them with experimental data. We exhibit …
The projected shell model with configuration mixing for nuclear chirality is developed and applied to the observed rotational bands in the chiral nucleus $^{130}$Cs. For the chiral bands, the energy spectra and electromagnetic transition probabilities are well reproduced. The chiral geometry illustrated in the $K~plot$ and the $azithumal~plot$ is confirmed to be stable against the configuration mixing. The other rotational bands are also described in the same framework.
Eigenfunctions of the collective Bohr Hamiltonian with the Morse potential have been obtained by using the Asymptotic Iteration Method (AIM) for both gamma-unstable and rotational structures. B(E2) transition rates have been calculated and compared to experimental data. Overall good agreement is obtained for transitions within the ground state band, while some interband transitions appear to be systematically underpredicted in gamma-unstable nuclei and overpredicted in rotational nuclei.
We describe a procedure for mapping a self-consistent mean-field theory (also known as density functional theory) into a shell model Hamiltonian that includes quadrupole-quadrupole and monopole pairing interactions in a truncated space. We test our method in the deformed N=Z sd-shell nuclei Ne-20, Mg-24 and Ar-36, starting from the Hartree-Fock plus BCS approximation of the USD shell model interaction. A similar procedure is then followed using the SLy4 Skyrme energy density functional in the particle-hole channel plus a zero-range density-dependent force in the pairing channel. Using the grou…
Our main concern in this work is to show how higher shell admixtures affect the spectrum of a Q.Q interaction. We first review how, in the valence space, the familiar SU(3) result for the energy spectrum can be obtained using a coordinate space Q.Q interaction rather than the Elliott one which is symmetric in r and p. We then reemphasize that the Elliott spectrum goes as L(L+1) where L is the orbital angular momentum. While in many cases this is compatible with the rotational formula which involves I(I+1), where I is the total angular momentum, there are cases, e.g. odd-odd nuclei, where there…
A pseudo shell SU(3) model description of normal parity bands in 159-Tb is presented. The Hamiltonian includes spherical Nilsson single-particle energies, the quadrupole-quadrupole and pairing interactions, as well as three rotor terms. A systematic parametrization is introduced, accompained by a detailed discussion of the effect each term in the Hamiltonian has on the energy spectrum. Yrast and excited band wavefunctions are analyzed together with their B(E2) values.
The ground state and low-lying continuum states of 6He are found within a shell model scheme, in a basis of two-particle states built out of continuum p-states of the unbound 5He nucleus, using a simple pairing contact-delta interaction. This accounts for the Borromean character of the bound ground state, revealing its composition. We investigate the quadrupole response of the system and we put our calculations into perspective with the latest experimental results. The calculated quadrupole strength distribution reproduces the narrow 2+ resonance, while a second wider peak is found at about 3.…
Exact diagonalizations with a realistic interaction show that configurations with four neutrons in a major shell and four protons in another -or the same- major shell, behave systematically as backbending rotors. The dominance of the $q\cdot q$ component of the interaction is explained by an approximate form of SU3 symmetry. It is suggested that these configurations are associated with the onset of rotational motion in medium and heavy nuclei.
The quadrupole collectivity in Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er, Yb, Hf and W nuclei with neutron numbers 122 $\le$ N $\le$ 156 is studied, both at the mean field level and beyond, using the Gogny energy density functional. Besides the robustness of the N=126 neutron shell closure, it is shown that the onset of static deformations in those isotopic chains with increasing neutron number leads to an enhanced stability and further extends the corresponding two-neutron driplines far beyond what could be expected from spherical calculations. Independence of the mean field predictions with respect to the particul…
The damping of collective rotational motion is investigated by means of particles-rotor model in which the angular momentum coupling is treated exactly and the valence nucleons are in a multi-$j$ shell mean-field. It is found that the onset energy of rotational damping is around 1.1 MeV above yrast line, and the number of states which form rotational band structure is thus limited. The number of calculated rotational bands around 30 at a given angular momentum agrees qualitatively with experimental data. The onset of rotational damping takes place gradually as a function of excitation energy. …
Radioactive $^{129}$Sb, which can be treated as a proton plus semi-magic $^{128}$Sn core within the particle-core coupling scheme, was studied by Coulomb excitation. Reduced electric quadrupole transition probabilities, $B(E2)$, for the $2^+$ $\times$ $πg_{7/2}$ multiplet members and candidate $πd_{5/2}$ state were measured. The results indicate that the total electric quadrupole strength of $^{129}$Sb is a factor of 1.39(11) larger than the $^{128}$Sn core, which is in stark contrast to the expectations of the empirically successful particle-core coupling scheme. Shell-model calculations perf…
We review a method that we recently introduced to calculate the finite-temperature distribution of the axial quadrupole operator in the laboratory frame using the auxiliary-field Monte Carlo technique in the framework of the configuration-interaction shell model. We also discuss recent work to determine the probability distribution of the quadrupole shape tensor as a function of intrinsic deformation $β,γ$ by expanding its logarithm in quadrupole invariants. We demonstrate our method for an isotope chain of samarium nuclei whose ground states describe a crossover from spherical to deformed sha…
Previously [1] it was shown that for a configuration of 2 protons and 2 neutrons in the g_{9/2}shell there is a certain degeneracy that occurs when the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction (Q.Q) is used to to obtain the wave functions.. We here show 3 other examples of such degenerate pairs, all, as before, involving T=0 and T=2 states. . More important we discuss an unusual peculiarity of the original example. Also we point out that degeneracies can be confusing and steps can be taken to remove them.
Rotational $SU(3)$ algebraic symmetry continues to generate new results in the shell model (SM). Interestingly, it is possible to have multiple $SU(3)$ algebras for nucleons occupying an oscillator shell $η$. Several different aspects of the multiple $SU(3)$ algebras are investigated using shell model and also deformed shell model based on Hartree-Fock single particle states with nucleons in $sdg$ orbits giving four $SU(3)$ algebras. Results show that one of the $SU(3)$ algebra generates prolate shapes, one oblate shape and the other two also generate prolate shape but one of them gives quiet …
The core polarization effect for the electric quadrupole moment of the neutron-rich $^{31}$Al, $^{33}$Al and $^{35}$Al isotopes in the vicinity of the island of inversion are investigated by means of the microscopic particle-vibration coupling model in which the Skyrme Hartee-Fock-Bogoliubov and quasiparticle-random-phase approximation are used to calculate the single-quasiparticle wave functions and the excitation modes. It is found that the polarization charge for the proton $1d_{5/2}$ hole state in $^{33}$Al is quite sensitive to coupling to the neutrons in the $pf$-shell associated with th…
We consider 2 neutrons and 2 protons in the g_{9/2} shell.Wave functions and energy levels are obtained for various interactions. The wave functions for states with total angular momentum I greater or equal to 10 are not affected by what the pairing interacton (J=0 T=1) is.Other parts of the interaction are therefore of increased importance.
A comparative study is performed of a deformed mean field theory, represented by the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) model, and the spherical shell model. Energy spectra, occupation numbers, B(E2)-values, and spectroscopic quadrupole moments in the light pf shell nuclei are calculated in the two models and compared. The result is also compared to available experimental data which are generally well described by the shell model. Although the Nilsson-Strutinsky calculation does not include pairing, both the subshell occupation numbers and quadrupole properties are found to be rather similar in …
The matrix elements of the quadrupole collective variables, emerging from collective nuclear models, are calculated in the natural Cartan-Weyl basis of O(5) which is a subgroup of a covering $SU(1,1)\times O(5)$ structure. Making use of an intermediate set method, explicit expressions of the matrix elements are obtained in a pure algebraic way, fixing the $γ$-rotational structure of collective quadrupole models.
