Atomic spectroscopy is used to search for the space-time variation of fundamental constants which may be due to an interaction with scalar and pseudo-scalar (axion) dark matter. In this letter, we study the effects which are produced by the variation of the nuclear radius and electric quadrupole moment. The sensitivity of the electric quadrupole hyperfine structure to both the variation of the quark mass and the effects of dark matter exceeds that of the magnetic hyperfine structure by 1-2 orders of magnitude. Therefore, the measurement of the variation of the ratio of the electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole hyperfine constants is proposed. The sensitivity of the optical clock transitions in the Yb$^+$ ion to the variation of the nuclear radius allows us to extract, from experimental data, limits on the variation of the hadron and quark masses, the QCD parameter $θ$ and the interaction with axion and scalar dark matter.
On the basis of quasipotential approach in quantum electrodynamics we calculate vacuum polarization and quadrupole corrections in first and second orders of perturbation theory in hyperfine structure of P-states in muonic deuterium. All corrections are presented in integral form and evaluated analytically and numerically. The obtained results can be used for the improvement of the transition frequencies between levels 2P and 2S.
We study the 2D scattering of axions from an accelerator like quadrupole magnet using the eikonal approximation in order to learn whether or not such a setup could serve as a new possible method for detecting axions on terrestrial experiments. The eikonal approximation in 2D is introduced and explained. We also apply the eikonal approximation to two known cases in order to compare it with previous results, obtained using Born's approximation, and discuss its correctness.
An absorption dip in the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background observed by the EDGES experiment suggests an unexplained reduction of the hydrogen spin temperature at cosmic redshift z ~ 17. The mass of dark-matter axions could correspond to the hyperfine splitting of 5.9 micro-eV, between the triplet (H1) and singlet (H0) state. We calculate the rate for a+ H0 <-> H1 in two ways, and find that it is orders of magnitude smaller than the CMB-mediated transition rate, so irrelevant. As a result, this process cannot be used to rule in or out dark matter axions of mass = hyperfine splitting. …
Deformed nuclei possess enhanced moments violating time reversal invariance ($T$) and parity ($P$). Collective magnetic quadrupole moments (MQM) appear in nuclei with a quadrupole deformation (which have ordinary $T$,$P$-conserving collective electric quadrupole moments). Nuclei with an octupole deformation have a collective electric octupole moment, electric dipole moment (EDM), Schiff moment and MQM in the intrinsic frame which rotates with the nucleus. In a state with definite angular momentum in the laboratory frame, these moments are forbidden by $T$ and $P$ conservation, meaning their ex…
In the interaction of two electric quadrupoles, there is at short distances a contact term proportional to the second derivative of a delta function. This contact term contributes to the hyperfine splitting of bound states of two particles with spin one or higher-for example the bound states of Omega minus and a nucleus of spin one.The contact hyperfine splitting occurs in states with orbital angular momentum one(p-wave), in contrast to the Fermi contact interaction which is in s-states.We find that these contact splittings will be observable with Omega minus atoms and help measure the quadrup…
The interaction of standard model's particles with the axionic Dark Matter field may generate oscillating nuclear electric dipole moments (EDMs), oscillating nuclear Schiff moments and oscillating nuclear magnetic quadrupole moments (MQMs) with a frequency corresponding to the axion's Compton frequency. Within an atom or a molecule an oscillating EDM, Schiff moment or MQM can drive transitions between atomic or molecular states. The excitation events can be detected, for example, via subsequent fluorescence or photoionization. Here we calculate the rates of such transitions. If the nucleus has…
The CP-violating interaction of the nuclear magnetic quadrupole moment (MQM) of the $^{175}$Lu nucleus with electrons in the molecular cation LuOH$^+$ is studied. The resulting effect is expressed in terms of CP-odd parameters, such as quantum chromodynamics angle $\barθ$, quark electric dipole moment (EDM) and chromo-EDM. For this we have performed a calculation of the nuclear MQM as well as the molecular constant that characterises the interaction of this MQM of $^{175}$Lu with electrons. Additionally, we predict the hyperfine structure constants for the ground electronic state of LuOH$^+$. …
Contact $P$-wave interactions connected to the Larmor interaction of a magnetic dipole and Thomas spin precession in the filed of an electric quadrupole are described and their implications for spectroscopy of exotic $Ω^{-}$-atoms are studied. In order to evaluate the magnitude of the contact $P$-wave interactions as compared to the conventional long-range interactions and the sensitivity of spectroscopic data to the $Ω^{-}$-hyperon quadrupole moment, we consider $2P$ states of $Ω^{-}$ atoms formed with light stable nuclei with spins $I \geq 1/2$ and atomic numbers $Z \leq 10$. The energy leve…
The 21-cm line signal arising from the hyperfine interaction in hydrogen has an important role in cosmology and provides a unique method for probing of the universe prior to the star formation era. We propose that the spin flip of Hydrogen by the coherent emission/absorption of axions causes a lowering of their spin temperature and can explain the stronger than expected absorption of 21-cm light reported by the EDGES collaboration. We find the analogy of axion interaction with the two level HI with the Jaynes-Cummings model of a two level atom in a cavity and we derive the spin flip frequency …
On the basis of quasipotential approach to the bound state problem in quantum electrodynamics we calculate hyperfine structure intervals Delta E^{hfs}(2P_{1/2}) and Delta E^{hfs}(2P_{3/2}) for P-states in muonic deuterium. The tensor method of projection operators for the calculation of the hyperfine structure of P-states with definite quantum numbers of total atomic momentum F and total muon momentum j in muonic deuterium is formulated. We take into account vacuum polarization, relativistic, quadrupole and structure corrections of orders alpha^4, alpha^5 and alpha^6. The obtained numerical va…
CP violation effects produced by the nuclear magnetic quadrupole moment (MQM), electron electric dipole moment (EDM) and scalar$-$pseudoscalar nucleus$-$electron neutral current (SP) interaction in $^{177}$Hf$^{19}$F$^+$ and $^{179}$Hf$^{19}$F$^+$ are calculated. The role of the hyperfine interaction is investigated. It is shown that the MQM shift can be distinguished from the electron EDM and SP ones due to the implicit dependence of MQM shift on the hyperfine sublevel. The MQM effect is expressed in terms of the proton (EDM), QCD vacuum angle $θ$ and quark chromo-EDMs.
It is shown, that the energy density of coherent axion field oscillations in the cosmology of standard invisible axion should be distributed in the Universe in the form of archioles, being nonlinear inhomogeneous structure, reflecting the large scale distribution of Brownian structure of axion strings in the very early Universe. Spectrum of inhomogeneities, generated by archioles, is obtained and their effects in the spectrum and quadrupole anisotropy of relic radiation are considered. The axionic-string-decay-model-independent restriction on the scale of axion interaction is obtained.

We present a study of the mechanism of anomaly cancellation using only transverse invariant amplitudes on anomaly diagrams at higher perturbative orders. The method is the realization of the Green-Schwarz (GS) mechanism at field theory level, which restores the Ward identities by a subtraction of the anomaly pole. Some of the properties of the GS vertex are analyzed both in the context of unitarity and of the organization of the related perturbative expansion. We investigate the role played by the GS and the Wess-Zumino vertices in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and in the hyperfine…
Ultralight scalar fields such as axions can form clouds around rotating black holes (BHs) by the superradiant instability. It is important to consider the evolution of clouds associated with BH binaries for the detectability of the presence of clouds through gravitational wave signals and observations of the mass and spin parameters of BHs. We re-examine the impact on the axion cloud due to the tidal perturbation from the companion in a binary system taking into account the following points. First, we study the influence of higher-multipole moments. Second, we consider the backreaction due to …
