This thesis is concerned with the mixed Tate property of reductive algebraic groups $G$, which in particular guarantees a Chow Kunneth property for the classifying space $BG$. Toward this goal, we first refine the construction of the compactly supported motive of a quotient stack.
In the first section, we construct the compactly supported motive $M^c(X)$ of an algebraic space $X$ and demonstrate that it satisfies expected properties, following closely Voevodsky's work in the case of schemes.
In the second section, we construct a functorial version of Totaro's definition of the compactly supported motive $M^c([X/G])$ for any quotient stack $[X/G]$ where $X$ is an algebraic space and $G$ is an affine group scheme acting on it. A consequence of functoriality is a localization triangle for these motives.
In the third section, we study the mixed Tate property for the classical groups as well as the exceptional group $G_2$. For these groups, we demonstrate that all split forms satisfy the mixed Tate property, while exhibiting non-split forms that do not. Finally, we prove that for any affine group scheme $G$ and normal split unipotent subgroup $J$ of $G$, the motives $M^c(BG)$ and $M^c(B(G/J))$ are isomorphic.
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over a $p$-adic field or number field $K$, and let $V$ be a $K$-linear faithful representation of $G$. A lattice $Λ$ in the vector space $V$ defines a model $\hat{G}_Λ$ of $G$ over $\mathscr{O}_K$. One may wonder to what extent $Λ$ is determined by the group scheme $\hat{G}_Λ$. In this paper we prove that up to a natural equivalence relation on the set of lattices there are only finitely many $Λ$ corresponding to one model $\hat{G}_Λ$. Furthermore, we relate this fact to moduli spaces of abelian varieties as follows: let $\mathscr{A}_{g,n}$ be the moduli …
Using the theory of mixed perverse sheaves, we extend arguments on the Hodge conjecture initiated by Lefschetz and Griffiths to the case of the Tate conjecture, and show that the Tate conjecture for divisors is closely related to the de Rham conjecture for nonproper varieties, finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich groups, and also to some conjectures in the analytic number theory.
For a number field, we have a Tannaka category of mixed Tate motives at our disposal. We construct p-adic points of the associated Tannaka group by using p-adic Hodge theory. Extensions of two Tate objects yield functions on the Tannaka group, and we show that evaluation at our p-adic points is essentially given by the inverse of the Bloch-Kato exponential map.
In this paper, we construct an object of the abelian category of mixed Tate motive associated to multiple zeta values. as a consequence, we prove the inequality of the dimension of the vector space generated by multiple zeta values, which is conjectured by Zagier. (Some errors was corrected from the first version. Namely, we changed the definition of the boundary $\bold B^0$.)
This paper studies Artin-Tate motives over number rings. As a subcategory of geometric motives, the triangulated category of Artin-Tate motives DATM(S) is generated by motives of schemes that are finite over the base S. After establishing stability of these subcategories under pullback and pushforward along open and closed immersions, a motivic t-structure is constructed. Exactness properties of these functors familiar from perverse sheaves are shown to hold in this context. The cohomological dimension of mixed Artin-Tate motives is two, and there is an equivalence of the triangulated category…
Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $\{B_{\mathbb{C}}G\}$ the class of its classifying stack $B_{\mathbb{C}}G$ in Ekedahl's Grothendieck ring of algebraic $\mathbb{C}$-stacks $K_0(\operatorname{Stacks}_{\mathbb{C}})$. We show that if $B_{\mathbb{C}}G$ has the mixed Tate property, the invariants $H^i(\{B_{\mathbb{C}}G\})$ defined by T. Ekedahl are zero for all $i\neq 0$. We also extend Ekedahl's construction of these invariants to fields of positive characteristic.
Recently, the author defined multiple Dedekind zeta values \cite{MDZF} associated to a number $K$ field and a cone $C$. In this paper we construct explicitly non-trivial examples of mixed Tate motives over the ring of integers in $K$, for a real quadratic number field $K$ and a particular cone C. The period of such a motive is a multiple Dedekind zeta values at $(s_1,s_2)=(1,2)$, associated to the pair $(K;C)$, times a nonzero element of $K$.
We define Euclidean scissor congruence groups for an arbitrary algebraically closed field F and propose their conjectural description. We suggest how they should be related to mixed Tate motives over dual numbers for F.
The family of all mixed Hodge structures on a given rational vector space $M_\mathbb{Q}$ with a fixed weight filtration $W_\cdot$ and a fixed associated graded Hodge structure $Gr^WM$ is naturally in a one to one correspondence with a complex affine space. We study the unipotent radical of the very general Mumford-Tate group of the family. We do this by using general Tannakian results which relate the unipotent radical of the fundamental group of an object in a filtered Tannakian category to the extension classes of the object coming from the filtration. Our main result shows that if $Gr^WM$ i…
We develop the theory of multiple polylogarithms from analytic, Hodge and motivic point of view. Define the category of mixed Tate motives over a ring of integers in a number field. Describe explicitly the multiple polylogarithm Hopf algebra.
We prove that the category of mixed Tate motives over $\Z$ is spanned by the motivic fundamental group of $\Pro^1$ minus three points. We prove a conjecture by M. Hoffman which states that every multiple zeta value is a $\Q$-linear combination of $ζ(n_1,..., n_r)$ where $n_i\in \{2,3\}$.
We prove a few results concerning the notions of finite dimensionality of mixed Tate motives in the sense of Kimura and O'Sullivan. It is shown that being oddly or evenly finite dimensional is equivalent to vanishing of certain cohomology groups defined by means of Levine weight filtration. We then explain the relation to the Grothendieck group of the triangulated category D of mixed Tate motives. This naturally gives rise to a λ-ring structure on K_0(D).
A natural place to study the Chow ring of the classifying space $BG$, for $G$ a linear algebraic group, is Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives, inside which Morel and Voevodsky, and Totaro have defined motives $M(BG)$ and $M^c(BG)$, respectively. We show that, for any group $G$ of order $p^3$ over a field of characteristic not $p$ which contains a primitive $p^2$-th root of unity, the motive $M(BG)$ is a mixed Tate motive. We also show that, for a finite group $G$ over a field of characteristic zero, $M(BG)$ is a mixed Tate motive if and only $M^c(BG)$ is a mixed Tate motive.
The category of rational mixed Hodge-Tate structures is a mixed Tate category. So thanks to the Tannakian formalism, it is equivalent to the category of finite dimensional graded comodules over a graded commutative Hopf algebra H over Q. Since the category has homological dimension 1, the Hopf algebra H is isomorphic to the commutative graded Hopf algebra provided by the tensor algebra of the graded vector space given by the direct sum of the groups C/Q(n) over n>0. However this isomorphism is not natural in any sense, e.g. does not work in families. We give a natural explicit construction of …
We study stacks of truncated Barsotti-Tate groups and the $G$-zips defined by Pink, Wedhorn & Ziegler. The latter occur naturally when studying truncated Barsotti-Tate groups of height 1 with additional structure. By studying objects over finite fields and their automorphisms we determine the zeta functions of these stacks. These zeta functions can be expressed in terms of the Weyl group of the reductive group $G$ and its action on the root system. The main ingredients are the classification of $G$-zips over algebraically closed fields and their automorphism groups by Pink, Wedhorn & Ziegler, …
In a number of recent works [6, 7] the authors have introduced and studied a functor $\mathcal{F}_k$ which associates to each loose graph $Γ$ -which is similar to a graph, but where edges with $0$ or $1$ vertex are allowed - a $k$-scheme, such that $\mathcal{F}_k(Γ)$ is largely controlled by the combinatorics of $Γ$. Here, $k$ is a field, and we allow $k$ to be $\mathbb{F}_1$, the field with one element. For each finite prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$, it is noted in [6] that any $\mathcal{F}_k(Γ)$ is polynomial-count, and the polynomial is independent of the choice of the field. In this note, we s…
Two different constructions of an invariant of an odd dimensional hyperbolic manifold in the K-group $K_{2n-1}(\bar \Bbb Q)\otimes \Bbb Q$ are given. The volume of the manifold is equal to the value of the Borel regulator on that element. The scissor congruence groups in non euclidian geometries are studied and their relationship with algebraic K-theory of the field of complex numbers is discussed.
In this paper, we study the combinatorics of a subcomplex of the Bloch-Kriz cycle complex [4] used to construct the category of mixed Tate motives. The algebraic cycles we consider properly contain the subalgebra of cycles that correspond to multiple logarithms (as defined in [12]). We associate an algebra of graphs to our subalgebra of algebraic cycles. We give a purely graphical criterion for admissibilty. We show that sums of bivalent graphs correspond to coboundary elements of the algebraic cycle complex. Finally, we compute the Hodge realization for an infinite family of algebraic cycles …
In a previous work, the author have built two families of distinguished algebraic cycles in Bloch-Kriz cubical cycle complex over the projective line minus three points. The goal of this paper is to show how these cycles induce well-defined elements in the $\HH^0$ of the bar construction of the cycle complex and thus generated comodules over this $\HH^0$, that is a mixed Tate motives as in Bloch and Kriz construction. In addition, it is shown that out of the two families only ones is needed at the bar construction level. As a consequence, the author obtains that one of the family gives a basis…
A p-divisible group over a complete local domain determines a Galois representation on the Tate module of its generic fibre. We determine the image of this representation for the universal deformation in mixed characteristic of a bi-infinitesimal group and for the p-rank strata of the universal deformation in positive characteristic of an infinitesimal group. The method is a reduction to the known case of one-dimensional groups by a deformation argument based on properties of the stratification by Newton polygons.
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over a perfect field $k$ and $\cG$ a $G$-bundle over a scheme $X/k$. The main aim of this article is to study the motive associated with $\cG$, inside the Veovodsky Motivic categories. We consider the case that $\charakt k=0$ (resp. $\charakt k\geq 0$), the motive associated to $X$ is geometrically mixed Tate (resp. geometrically cellular) and $\cG$ is locally trivial for the Zariski (resp. étale) topology on $X$ and show that the motive of $\cG$ is geometrically mixed Tate. Moreover for a general $X$ we construct a nested filtration on the motive associa…
Recently, the author defined multiple Dedekind zeta values [5] associated to a number K field and a cone C. These objects are number theoretic analogues of multiple zeta values. In this paper we prove that every multiple Dedekind zeta value over any number field K is a period of a mixed Tate motive. Moreover, if K is a totally real number field, then we can choose a cone C so that every multiple Dedekind zeta associated to the pair (K;C) is unramified over the ring of algebraic integers in K. In [7], the author proves similar statements in the special case of a real quadratic fields for a part…
This is the second installment in a sequence of articles devoted to "explicit Chabauty-Kim theory" for the thrice punctured line. Its ultimate goal is to construct an algorithmic solution to the unit equation whose halting will be conditional on Goncharov's conjecture about exhaustion of mixed Tate motives by motivic iterated integrals (refined somewhat with respect to ramification), and on Kim's conjecture about the determination of integral points via $p$-adic iterated integrals. In this installment we explain what this means while developing basic tools for the construction of the algorithm…
In this paper we construct a Q-linear tannakian category MEM_1 of universal mixed elliptic motives over the moduli space M_{1,1} of elliptic curves. It contains MTM, the category of mixed Tate motives unramified over the integers. Each object of MEM_1 is an object of MTM endowed with an action of SL_2(Z) that is compatible with its structure. Universal mixed elliptic motives can be thought of as motivic local systems over M_{1,1} whose fiber over the tangential base point d/dq at the cusp is a mixed Tate motive. The basic structure of the tannakian fundamental group of MEM is determined and th…
Let k be a number field, and let S be a finite set of k-rational points of P^1. We relate the Deligne-Goncharov contruction of the motivic fundamental group of X:=P^1_k- S to the Tannaka group scheme of the category of mixed Tate motives over X.
In the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds, the instanton expansion of the prepotential has a constant term that is a rational multiple of $ζ(3)/(2 πi)^3$, the motivic origin of which has been carefully studied in the author's paper with M. Kim. The Gamma conjecture claims that higher zeta values in fact appear in the theory of Calabi-Yau $n$-folds for $n \geq 4$. Moreover, a natural question is whether they also have a motivic origin. In this paper, we will study the limit mixed Hodge structure (MHS) of the Fermat pencil of Calabi-Yau $n$-folds at the large complex structure limit, which…
For a linear algebraic group $G$ over $\bf Q$, we consider the period domains $D$ classifying $G$-mixed Hodge structures, and construct the extended period domains $D_{\mathrm{BS}}$, $D_{\mathrm{SL}(2)}$, and $Γ\backslash D_Σ$. In particular, we give toroidal partial compactifications of mixed Mumford--Tate domains.
The goal of this paper is to give an explicit description of the triangulated categories of Tate and Artin-Tate motives with finite coefficients Z/m over a field K containing a primitive m-root of unity as the derived categories of exact categories of filtered modules over the absolute Galois group of K with certain restrictions on the successive quotients. This description is conditional upon (and its validity is equivalent to) certain Koszulity hypotheses about the Milnor K-theory/Galois cohomology of K. This paper also purports to explain what it means for an arbitrary nonnegatively graded …
Let $p$ be a prime. Let $R$ be a regular local ring of dimension $d\ge 2$ whose completion is isomorphic to $C(k)[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]/(h)$, with $C(k)$ a Cohen ring with the same residue field $k$ as $R$ and with $h\in C(k)[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]$ such that its reduction modulo $p$ does not belong to the ideal $(x_1^p,\ldots,x_d^p)+(x_1,\ldots,x_d)^{2p-2}$ of $k[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]$. We extend a result of Vasiu-Zink (for $d=2$) to show that each Barsotti-Tate group over $\text{Frac}(R)$ which extends to every local ring of $\text{Spec}(R)$ of dimension $1$, extends uniquely to a Barsotti-Tate group ove…
We define the category of mixed Tate motives over the ring of S-integers of a number field. We define the motivic fundamental group (made unipotent) of a unirational variety over a number field. We apply this to the study of the motivic fundamental group of the projective line punctured at zero, infinity and all N-th roots of unity.
For a linear algebraic group $G$ over $\mathbf Q$, we consider the period domains $D$ classifying $G$-mixed Hodge structures, and construct the extended period domains $D_Σ$. In particular, we give toroidal partial compactifications of mixed Mumford--Tate domains, mixed Shimura varieties over $\mathbf C$, and higher Albanese manifolds.
Over the past fifteen years or so, Minhyong Kim has developed a framework for making effective use of the fundamental group to bound (or even compute) integral points on hyperbolic curves. This is the third installment in a series whose goal is to realize the potential effectivity of Kim's approach in the case of the thrice punctured line. As envisioned in the last installment, we construct an algorithm whose output upon halting is provably the set of integral points, and whose halting would follow from conjectures. Our results go a long way towards achieving our goals over the rationals, whil…
We consider categories of equivariant mixed Tate motives, where equivariant is understood in the sense of Borel. We give the two usual definitions of equivariant motives, via the simplicial Borel construction and via algebraic approximations of it. The definitions turn out to be equivalent and give rise to a full six-functor formalism. For rational étale motives over a finite field or the homotopical stable algebraic derivator arising from the semisimplified Hodge realization, the equivariant mixed Tate motives provide a graded version of the equivariant derived category. We show that, in suff…
It's well known that multiple polylogarithms give rise to good unipotent variations of mixed Hodge-Tate structures. In this paper we shall {\em explicitly} determine these structures related to multiple logarithms and some other multiple polylogarithms of lower weights. The purpose of this explicit construction is to give some important applications: First we study of the limit mixed Hodge-Tate structures and make a conjecture relating the variations of mixed Hodge-Tate structures of multiple logarithms to those of general multiple {\em poly}logarithms. Then following Deligne and Beilinson we …
We construct derived fundamental group schemes for Tate motives over connected smooth schemes over fields. We show that there exists a pro affine derived group scheme over the rationals such that its category of perfect representations models the triangulated category of rational mixed Tate motives. Under a hypothesis which is weaker than an integral version of the Beilinson-Soule vanishing conjecture we show that there is an affine derived group scheme over the integers such that its perfect representations model Tate motives with integral coefficients. The hypothesis is for example fulfilled…

We study certain spaces of nilpotent orbits in Hodge domains, and treat a number of examples. More precisely, we compute the Mumford-Tate group of the limit mixed Hodge structure of a generic such orbit. The result is used to present these spaces as iteratively fibered algebraic-group orbits in a minimal way. We conclude with two applications to variations of Hodge structure.
As a higher genus version of universal mixed elliptic motives by Hain and Matsumoto, we consider mixed Teichmüller motives as certain motivic local systems on the moduli space of pointed curves. We show that the category of mixed Teichmüller motives is equivalent to a full subcategory of a certain product category of mixed Tate motives over Z and universal mixed elliptic motives. Furthermore, we show that unipotent fundamental torsors for the universal open curve give rise to a pro-object in the category of mixed Teichmüller motives. Our results can give a realization of motivic correlators pr…
We study local-global questions for Galois cohomology over the function field of a curve defined over a p-adic field (a field of cohomological dimension 3). We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of the base field coming from a closed point of the curve. In the case of a torus we establish a perfect duality between the first Tate-Shafarevich group of the torus and the second Tate-Shafarevich group of the dual torus. As an application, we show that the failure of the local-global principle for rational points on …
In this paper, we show that the mixed Hodge structures of character varieties are of Hodge--Tate type and that the mixed Hodge polynomials are independent of the choice of generic eigenvalues, which is a conjecture due to Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. Moreover, we investigate the mixed Hodge structures of the moduli space of semistable parabolic Higgs bundles and the moduli space of semistable regular singular parabolic connections. We show that the mixed Hodge structures of these moduli spaces are pure.
The Grothendieck--Serre conjecture predicts that every generically trivial torsor under a reductive group scheme $G$ over a regular local ring $R$ is trivial. The mixed characteristic case of the conjecture is widely open. We consider the following setup. Let $A$ be a mixed characteristic DVR, $G$ a reductive group scheme over $A$, $X$ an irreducible smooth projective $A$-scheme, $\mathcal G$ a principal $G$-bundle over $X$. Suppose $\mathcal G$ is generically trivial. We prove that in this case $\mathcal G$ is Zariski locally trivial. This result confirms the conjecture.
