We analyze the chain recurrent set of skew product semiflows obtained from nonautonomous differential equations -- ordinary differential equations or semilinear parabolic differential equations. For many gradient-like dynamical systems, Morse-Smale dynamical systems e.g., the chain recurrent set contains only isolated equilibria. The structure in the asymptotically autonomous setting is richer but still close to to the structure of a Morse-Smale dynamical system.
The main tool used in this paper is a nonautonomous flavour of Conley index theory developed by the author. We will see that for a class of good equations, the Conley index can be understood in terms of equilibria (in a generalized meaning) and their connections. This allows us to find specific solutions of asymptotically autonomous equations and generalizes properties of Morse-Smale dynamical systems to the asymptotically autonomous setting.
For pullback attractors of asymptotically autonomous dynamical systems we study the convergences of their components towards the global attractors of the limiting semigroups. We use some conditions of uniform boundedness of pullback attractors, instead of uniform compactness conditions used in the literature. Both forward convergence and backward convergence are studied.
The aim of this paper is to describe the structure of global attractors for non-autonomous difference systems of equations with recurrent (in particular, almost periodic) coefficients. We consider a special class of this type of systems (the so--called weak convergent systems). We study this problem in the framework of general non-autonomous dynamical systems (cocycles). We apply the general results obtained in our early papers to study the almost periodic (almost automorphic, recurrent) and asymptotically almost periodic (asymptotically almost automorphic, asymptotically recurrent) solutions …
The influence of time-dependent perturbations on an autonomous Hamiltonian system with an equilibrium of center type is considered. It is assumed that the perturbations decay at infinity in time and vanish at the equilibrium of the unperturbed system. In this case the stability and the long-term behaviour of trajectories depend on nonlinear and non-autonomous terms of the equations. The paper investigates bifurcations associated with a change of Lyapunov stability of the equilibrium and the emergence of new attracting or repelling states in the perturbed asymptotically autonomous system. The d…
The effect of multiplicative stochastic perturbations on Hamiltonian systems on the plane is investigated. It is assumed that perturbations fade with time and preserve a stable equilibrium of the limiting system. The paper investigates bifurcations associated with changes in the stability of the equilibrium and with the appearance of new stochastically stable states in the perturbed system. It is shown that depending on the structure and the parameters of the decaying perturbations the equilibrium can remain stable or become unstable. In some intermediate cases, a practical stability of the eq…
We develop a general compactification framework to facilitate analysis of nonlinear nonautonomous ODEs where nonautonomous terms decay asymptotically. The strategy is to compactify the problem: the phase space is augmented with a bounded but open dimension and then extended at one or both ends by gluing in flow-invariant subspaces that carry autonomous dynamics of the limit systems from infinity. We derive the weakest decay conditions possible for the compactified system to be continuously differentiable on the extended phase space. This enables us to use equilibria and other compact invariant…
We consider asymptotically autonomous semilinear parabolic equations u_t + Au = f(t,u). Suppose that $f(t,.)\to f^\pm$ as $t\to\pm\infty$, where the semiflows induced by \label{eq:140602-1511} u_t + Au = f^\pm(u) \tag{*} are gradient-like. Under certain assumptions, it is shown that generically with respect to a perturbation $g$ with $g(t)\to 0$ as $|t|\to\infty$, every solution of u_t + Au = f(t,u) + g(t) is a connection between equilibria $e^\pm$ of \eqref{eq:140602-1511} with $m(e^-)\geq m(e^+)$. Moreover, if the Morse indices satisfy $m(e^-) = m(e^+)$, then $u$ is isolated by linearization…
The asymptotically autonomous robustness of random attractors of stochastic fluid equations defined on \emph{bounded} domains has been considered in the literature. In this article, we initially consider this topic (almost surely and in probability) for a non-autonomous stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equation driven by additive and multiplicative noise defined on some \emph{unbounded Poincaré domains}. There are two significant keys to study this topic: what is the asymptotically autonomous limiting set of the time-section of random attractors as time goes to negative infinity, and how to show th…
The paper deals with the problem of existence of a convergent "strong" normal form in the neighbourhood of an equilibrium, for a finite dimensional system of differential equations with analytic and time-dependent non-linear term. The problem can be solved either under some non-resonance hypotheses on the spectrum of the linear part or if the non-linear term is assumed to be (slowly) decaying in time. This paper "completes" a pioneering work of Pustil'nikov in which, despite under weaker non-resonance hypotheses, the nonlinearity is required to be asymptotically autonomous. The result is obtai…
It is well known that, the existence of a Lyapunov function is a sufficient condition for stability, asymptotic stability, or global asymptotic stability of an equilibrium point of an autonomous system $\dot{\mathbf{x}} = f(\mathbf{x})$. In variants of Lyapunov theorems, the condition for a Lyapunov candidate $V$ (continuously differentiable and positive definite function) to be a Lyapunov function is that its time derivative along system trajectories must be negative semi-definite or negative definite. Numerically checking positive definiteness of $V$ is very difficult; checking negative defi…
We prove the theorem of linearized asymptotic stability for fractional differential equations. More precisely, we show that an equilibrium of a nonlinear Caputo fractional differential equation is asymptotically stable if its linearization at the equilibrium is asymptotically stable. As a consequence we extend Lyapunov's first method to fractional differential equations by proving that if the spectrum of the linearization is contained in the sector $\{λ\in \C : |\arg λ| > \frac{απ}{2}\}$ where $α> 0$ denotes the order of the fractional differential equation, then the equilibrium of the nonline…
In this paper, we investigate global dynamics for a system of delay differential equations which describes a virus-immune interaction in \textit{vivo}. The model has two distributed time delays describing time needed for infection of cell and virus replication. Our model admits three possible equilibria, an uninfected equilibrium and infected equilibrium with or without immune response depending on the basic reproduction number for viral infection $R_{0}$ and for CTL response $R_{1}$ such that $R_{1}<R_{0}$. It is shown that there always exists one equilibrium which is globally asymptotically …
If you are given a simple three-dimensional autonomous quadratic system that has only one stable equilibrium, what would you predict its dynamics to be, stable or periodic? Will it be surprising if you are shown that such a system is actually chaotic? Although chaos theory for three-dimensional autonomous systems has been intensively and extensively studied since the time of Lorenz in the 1960s, and the theory has become quite mature today, it seems that no one would anticipate a possibility of finding a three-dimensional autonomous quadratic chaotic system with only one stable equilibrium. Th…
The paper deals with the study of rate-induced tipping in asymptotically autonomous scalar ordinary differential equations. We prove that, in such a tipping scenario, a solution which limits at a hyperbolic stable equilibrium of the past limit-problem loses uniform asymptotic stability and coincides with a solution which limits at a hyperbolic unstable equilibrium of the future limit-problem. We use asymptotic series to approximate such pairs of solutions and characterize the occurrence of a rate-induced tipping by using only solutions calculable on finite time intervals. Moreover, we show tha…
This article concerns the long-term random dynamics in regular spaces for a non-autonomous Navier-Stokes equation defined on a bounded smooth domain $\mathcal{O}$ driven by multiplicative and additive noise. For the two kinds of noise driven equations, we demonstrate the existence of a unique pullback attractor which is backward compact and asymptotically autonomous in $\mathbb{L}^2(\mathcal{O})$ and $\mathbb{H}_0^1(\mathcal{O})$, respectively. The backward-uniform flattening property of the solution is used to prove the backward-uniform pullback asymptotic compactness of the non-autonomous ra…
A new geometric criterion is derived for the existence of chaos in continuous-time autonomous systems in three-dimensional Euclidean spaces, where a type of Smale horseshoe in a subshift of finite type exists, but the intersection of stable and unstable manifolds of two points on a hyperbolic periodic orbit does not imply the existence of a Smale horseshoe of the same type on cross-sections of these two points. This criterion is based on the existence of a hyperbolic periodic orbit, differing from the classical equilibrium-based Shilnikov criterion and the condition of transversal homoclinic o…
In this work we study permanence of hyperbolicity for autonomous differential equations under nonautonomous random/stochastic perturbations. For the linear case, we study robustness and existence of exponential dichotomies for nonautonomous random dynamical systems. Next, we establish a result on the persistence of hyperbolic equilibria for nonlinear differential equations. We show that for each nonautonomous random perturbation of an autonomous semilinear problem with a hyperbolic equilibrium there exists a bounded \textit{random hyperbolic solution} for the associated nonlinear nonautonomous…
We investigate the global dynamics of a renewal-type epidemic model with variable susceptibility. We show that in this extended model there exists a unique endemic equilibrium and prove that it is globally asymptotically stable when $R_0 > 1$, i.e. when it exists. We also show that the infection-free equilibrium, which exists always, is globally asymptotically stable for $R_0 \leq 1$.
A nonlinear parabolic differential equation with a quadratic nonlinearity is presented which has at least one equilibrium. The linearization about this equilibrium is asymptotically stable, but by using a technique inspired by H. Fujita, we show that the equilibrium is unstable in the nonlinear setting. The perturbations used have the property that they are small in every $L^p$ norm, yet they result in solutions which fail to be global.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behaviors of the solutions of nonlinear dynamic systems nearby an equilibrium point, when the nominal parts are subject to non necessarily small perturbations. We show that, under some estimates on the perturbation terms, the equilibrium point remains (globally) uniformly exponentially stable. The results we obtained can easily be applied in practice since they are based on the Gronwall-Bellman inequalities rather than the classical Lyapunov methods that require the knowledge of a Lyapunov function. Several numerical examples are presented in order …
We present a first-order aggregation model on a group ring, and study its asymptotic dynamics. In a positive coupling strength regime, we show that the flow generated by the proposed model tends to an equilibrium manifold asymptotically. For this, we introduce a Lyapunov functional which is non-increasing along the flow, and using the temporal decay of the nonlinear functional and the LaSalle invariance principle, we show that the flow converges toward an equilibrium manifold asymptotically. We also show that the structure of an equilibrium manifold is strongly dependent on the structure of an…
In this paper we propose a malaria within-host model with k classes of age for the parasitized red blood cells and n strains for the parasite. We provide a global analysis for this model. A competitive exclusion principle holds. If R0, the basic reproduction number, satisfies R0 </- 1, then the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. On the contrary if R0 > 1, then generically there is a unique endemic equilibrium which corresponds to the endemic stabilization of the most virulent parasite strain and to the extinction of all the other parasites strains. We prove that this e…
We study a class of SIRS epidemic dynamical models with a general non-linear incidence rate and transfer from infectious to susceptible. The incidence rate includes a wide range of monotonic, con- cave incidence rates and some non-monotonic or concave cases. We apply LaSalle's invariance principle and Lyapunov's direct method to prove that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number R0 lesser or equal to 1, and the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if R0 > 1, under some conditions imposed on the incidence function f(S; I).
We study the global dynamics of a reaction-diffusion SEIR infection model with distributed delay and nonlinear incidence rate. The well-posedness of the proposed model is proved. By means of Lyapunov functionals, we show that the disease free equilibrium state is globally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number is less or equal than one, and that the disease endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number is greater than one. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the obtained theoretical results.
The Landau--Lifshitz equation describes the dynamics of magnetization inside a ferromagnet. This equation is nonlinear and has an infinite number of stable equilibria. It is desirable to control the system from one equilibrium to another. A control that moves the system from an arbitrary initial state, including an equilibrium point, to a specified equilibrium is presented. It is proven that the second point is an asymptotically stable equilibrium of the controlled system. The results are illustrated with some simulations.
