We show that the $Z_N$ Berry phase (Berry phase quantized into $2π/N$) provides a useful tool to characterize symmetry protected topological phases with correlation that can be directly computed through numerics of a relatively small system size. The $Z_N$ Berry phase is defined in a $N-1$ dimensional parameter space of local gauge twists, which we call "synthetic Brillouin zone", and an appropriate choice of an integration path consistent with the symmetry of the system ensures exact quantization of the Berry phase. We demonstrate the usefulness of the $Z_N$ Berry phase by studying two 1D models of bosons, SU(3) and SU(4) AKLT models, where topological phase transitions are captured by $Z_3$ and $Z_4$ Berry phases, respectively. we find that the exact quantization of the $Z_N$ Berry phase at the topological transitions arises from a gapless band structure (e.g., Dirac cones or nodal lines) in the synthetic Brillouin zone.
Finding new phase is a fundamental task in physics. Landau's theory explained the deep connection between symmetry breaking and phase transition commonly occurring in magnetic, superconducting and super uid systems. The discovery of the quantum Hall effect led to Z topological phases which could be different for same symmetry and are characterized by the discrete values of the Berry phases. By studying 1D trimer lattices we report new phases characterized by Berry phases which are piecewise continuous rather than discrete numbers. The phase transition occurs at the discontinuity point. With ti…
Realising photonic analogues of the robust, unidirectional edge states of electronic topological insulators would improve our control of light on the nanoscale and revolutionise the performance of photonic devices. Here we show that new symmetry protected topological phases can be detected by reformulating energy eigenproblems as Berry curvature eigenproblems. The "Berry bands" span the same eigenspace as the original valence energy bands, but separate into pseudo-spinful and pseudo-spinless subspaces in $\mathrm{C}_2\mathcal{T}$-symmetric crystals. We demonstrate the method on the well-known …

我们证明了强自旋-轨道耦合材料Bi_2 Te_3和Sb_2 Te_3(第一非Bi拓扑绝缘体)及其衍生物属于Z_2(Time-Reflections-Protected,Elastic Backscattering suppressed)拓扑绝缘体类。
Higher-order topological insulators are a new class of topological phases of matter, originally conceived for electrons in solids. It has been suggested that $\mathbb{Z}_N$ Berry phase (Berry phase quantized into $2π/N$) is a useful tool to characterize the symmetry protected topological states, while the experimental evidence is still elusive. Recently, topolectrical circuits have emerged as a simple yet very powerful platform for studying topological physics that are challenging to realize in condensed matter systems. Here, we present the first experimental observation of second-order corner…
We present a two-dimensional (2D) lattice model that exhibits a nontrivial topological phase in the absence of the Berry curvature. Instead, the Berry connection provides the topological nontrivial phase in the model, whose integration over the momentum space, the so-called 2D Zak phase, yields a fractional wave polarization in each direction. These fractional wave polarizations manifest themselves as degenerated edge states with opposite parities in the model.
We introduce the concept of Berry's phase in Josephson junctions and consider how this geometric phase arises due to applied oscillating electric fields. The electromagnetic field excites topological quasi-particles from the junction vacuum which affect Cooper-pair tunneling across the Josephson junction barrier. A finite Berry's phase can be detected by its renormalization of the electric field amplitude absorbed by the junction. This has implications for the designing of accurate Josephson junction microwave detectors.
We study and present the results of Berry connection for the topological states in quantum matter. The Berry connection plays a central role in the geometric phase and topological phenomenon in quantum many-body system. We present the necessary and sufficient conditions to characterize the topological nature of the system through the complex analysis. We also present the different topological aspects of the system in the momentum space.
The zero gap surface states of a 3D-topological insulator host Dirac fermions with spin locked to the momentum. The gap-less Dirac fermions exhibit electronic behaviour different from those predicted in conventional materials. While calculations based on a simple linear dispersion can account for observed experimental patterns, a more accurate match is obtained by including higher order $ \overrightarrow{k}$ terms in the Hamiltonian. In this work, in presence of a time reversal symmetry breaking external magnetic field and higher order warping term, alteration to the topologically ordained Ber…
Topological aspects of electron wavefunction play a crucial role in determining the physical properties of materials. Berry curvature and Chern number are used to define the topological structure of electronic bands. While Berry curvature and its effects in materials have been studied, detecting changes in the topological invariant, Chern number, is challenging. In this regard, twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) has emerged as a promising platform to gain electrical control over the Berry curvature hotspots and the valley Chern numbers of its flat bands. In addition, strain induced breakin…
Recently, the magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ emerged as a competitive platform to realize quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) states. We report a Berry-curvature splitting mechanism to realize the QAH effect in the disordered magnetic TI multilayers when switching from an antiferromagnetic order to a ferromagnetic order. We reveal that the splitting of spin-resolved Berry curvature, originating from the separation of the mobility edge during the magnetic switching, can give rise to a QAH insulator even \emph{without} closing the band gap. We present a global phase diagram, and also pro…

We have observed the quantum Hall effect (QHE) and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in highly disordered graphene at magnetic fields up to 65 T. Disorder was introduced by hydrogenation of graphene up to a ratio H/C $\approx 0.1\%$. The analysis of SdH oscillations and QHE indicates that the topological part of the Berry phase, proportional to the pseudo-spin winding number, is robust against introduction of disorder by hydrogenation in large scale graphene.
Hall experiments in chiral magnets are often analyzed as the sum of an anomalous Hall effect, dominated by momentum-space Berry curvature, and a topological Hall effect, arising from the real-space Berry curvature in the presence of skyrmions, in addition to the ordinary Hall resistivity. This raises the questions of how one can incorporate, on an equal footing, the effects of the anomalous velocity and the real space winding of the magnetization, and when such a decomposition of the resistivity is justified. We provide definitive answers to these questions by including the effects of all phas…
Here, we introduce and apply non-Abelian tensor Berry connections to topological phases in multi-band systems. These gauge connections behave as non-Abelian antisymmetric tensor gauge fields in momentum space and naturally generalize Abelian tensor Berry connections and ordinary non-Abelian (vector) Berry connections. We build these novel gauge fields from momentum-space Higgs fields, which emerge from the degenerate band structure of degenerate-band models. Firstly, we show that the conventional topological invariants of two-dimensional topological insulators and three-dimensional Dirac semim…
Here we visualize the trapping of topological surface states in the circular n-p junctions on the top surface of the 7-quintuple-layer three dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) Sb2Te3 epitaxial films. As shown by spatially- and field-dependent tunneling spectra, these trapped resonances show field-induced splittings between the degenerate time-reversal-symmetric states at zero magnetic field. These behaviors are attributed unambiguously to Berry-phase switch by comparing the experimental data with both numerical and semi-classical simulations. The successful electrostatic trapping of t…
Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ is a well known 3D-topological insulators(TI) with a non-trivial Berry phase of $ \left(2n+1\right)π$ attributed to the topology of the band structure. The Berry phase shows non-topological deviations from $ \left(2n+1\right)π$ in presence of a perturbation that destroys time reversal symmetry and gives rise to a quantum system with massive Dirac fermions and finite band gap. Such a band gap opening is achieved on account of the exchange field of a ferromagnet or the intrinsic energy gap of a superconductor that influences the topological insulator surface states by virtue of …

The Berry phase and the phase of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in three-dimensional topological insulators
We report the observation of two-dimensional Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) oscillations in the topological insulator Tl$_{1-x}$Bi$_{1+x}$Se$_2$. Hall effect measurements exhibited electron-hole inversion in samples with bulk insulating properties. The SdH oscillations accompanying the hole conduction yielded a large surface carrier density of $n_{\rm{s}}=5.1 \times10^{12}$/cm$^2$, with the Landau-level fan diagram exhibiting the $π$ Berry phase. These results showed the electron-hole reversibility around the in-gap Dirac point and the hole conduction on the surface Dirac cone without involving the b…
We examine excitons formed in the bulk of a topological insulator as the system is tuned via a parameter between topological and trivial insulating phases, arguing that nontrivial topology has fingerprints in the spectrum of these excitons. The closely related hydrogen atom problem is well known to have a degeneracy due to a hidden symmetry, and the changes to the excitonic spectrum that we find can be understood as a result of breaking of this underlying symmetry due to the Berry phase. Furthermore, this phase is found to affect the spectrum in the topological parameter regime much more stron…
Band geometry plays a substantial role in topological lattice models. The Berry curvature, which resembles the effect of magnetic field in reciprocal space, usually fluctuates throughout the Brillouin zone. Motivated by the analogy with Landau levels, constant Berry curvature has been suggested as an ideal condition for realizing fractional Chern insulators. Here we show that while the Berry curvature cannot be made constant in a topological two-band model, lattice models with three or more degrees of freedom per unit cell can support exactly constant Berry curvature. However, contrary to the …
Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are topologically characterized in quantum quench dynamics in topological systems. In this paper, we study Loschmidt amplitudes and DQPTs in quantum quenches in mirror-symmetric topological phases. Based on the topological classification of mirror-symmetric insulators, we show that mirror symmetry creates symmetry-protected DQPTs. If mirror symmetry is present, topologically robust DQPTs can occur in quantum quenches, even in high-dimensional time-reversal invariant systems. Then, we also show that symmetry-protected DQPTs occur in quenches in two-di…
The quasiclassical dynamics is studied for charge carriers moving on the surface of 3D topological insulator of Bi2Te3 type and subjected to static magnetic field. The effects connected to the symmetry changes of electron isoenergetic surfaces (contours) and to the nonzero Berry curvature are taken into account. It is shown that in contrast to the standard dynamics of the electrons moving in constant and uniform magnetic field along the trajectories defined by the equations E(k)=const and pz=const, here some new effects are arising, being related to both the appearance of the anomalous velocit…
In periodic systems, nodal lines are loops in the three-dimensional momentum space where two bands are degenerate with each other. Nodal lines exhibit rich topological features as they can take various configurations such as rings, links, chains and knots. These line nodes are usually protected by mirror or PT symmetry. Here we propose and demonstrate a novel type of photonic straight nodal lines in a D2d meta-crystal which are protected by roto-inversion time (roto-PT) symmetry. The nodal lines are located at the central axis and hinges of the Brillouin zone. They appear as quadrupole sources…
Transitions between topologically distinct electronic states have been predicted in different classes of materials and observed in some. A major goal is the identification of measurable properties that directly expose the topological nature of such transitions. Here we focus on the giant-Rashba material bismuth tellurium iodine (BiTeI) which exhibits a pressure-driven phase transition between topological and trivial insulators in three-dimensions. We demonstrate that this transition, which proceeds through an intermediate Weyl semi-metallic state, is accompanied by a giant enhancement of the B…
We propose a method to predict the existence of topologically protected electromagnetic chiral modes between continuous media described by Maxwell's equations. The number and character of these modes is related to topological charges (Berry monopoles) in parameter space. Unlike the approaches proposed so far, our description does not require a regularization parameter at large $\mathbf{k}$ nor the materials to be topological on their own. The predictions of the theory are confirmed by additional numerical simulations of interfaces of gyrotropic media.
The physics of massless relativistic quantum particles has recently arisen in the electronic properties of solids following the discovery of graphene. Around the accidental crossing of two energy bands, the electronic excitations are described by a Weyl equation initially derived for ultra-relativistic particles. Similar three and four band semimetals have recently been discovered in two and three dimensions. Among the remarkable features of graphene are the characterization of the band crossings by a topological Berry winding, leading to an anomalous quantum Hall effect, and a finite minimal …
An effective Hamiltonian describing the surface states of a toroidal topological insulator is obtained, and it is shown to support both bound-states and charged zero-modes. Actually, the spin connection induced by the toroidal curvature can be viewed as an position-dependent effective vector potential, which ultimately yields the zero-modes whose wave-functions harmonically oscillate around the toroidal surface. In addition, two distinct Berry phases are predicted to take place by the virtue of the toroidal topology.
The physics related to Berry curvature is now a central research topic in condensed matter physics. The Berry curvature dipole (BCD) is a significant and intriguing condensed matter phenomenon that involves inversion symmetry breaking. However, the creation and controllability of BCDs have so far been limited to far below room temperature (RT) and non-volatile (i.e., ferroic) BCDs have not yet been discovered, hindering further progress in topological physics. In this work, we demonstrate a switchable and non-volatile BCD effect at RT in a topological crystalline insulator, Pb1-xSnxTe (PST), w…
We propose a protocol to locally detect the Berry curvature of a three terminal Josephson junction with a quantum dot based on a synchronic detection when an AC modulation is applied in the device. This local gauge invariant quantity is expressed in terms of the instantaneous Green function of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. We analyze the contribution to the Berry curvature from both the quasi-particle excitations and the Andreev bound state levels by introducing an effective low-energy model. In addition, we propose to induce topological properties in the junction by breaking time-reve…
In this paper, we introduce Berry curvature, topological Chern number and topological chiral edge mode, that emerge from a hybridization between magnon and electromagnetic wave in a ferromagnet insulator. By focusing on the energy conservation, we first reformulate the Landau-Lifshitz-Maxwell equation into a Hermitian eigenvalue equation. From the eigenvalue equation, we define the Berry curvature of the magnon-photon coupled waves. We show that the Berry curvature thus introduced shows a prominent peak around a hybridization point between magnon mode and photon mode, and a massive hybrid mode…
The quantum oscillation is an important probe for the detection of a topological insulator(TI) surface states by means of electrical transport since the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations allow to extract the Berry Phase which is the key test to detect the topological surface states. Here we have extracted the non trivial Berry Phase of 1$\%$ Sn doped strong TI $Sb_2Te_2Se$. We observed oscillation in Hall resistance as well and showed that this does not arise neither from the dominance of the SdH on Hall data nor this is the precursor of quantum Hall effect, rather this happens due to the pinning…
Topological phase in magnetic materials yields a quantized contribution to the Hall effect known as the topological Hall effect, which is often caused by skyrmions, with each skyrmion creating a magnetic flux quantum h/e. The control and understanding of topological properties in nanostructured materials is the subject of immense interest for both fundamental science and technological applications, especially in spintronics. In this work, the electron-transport properties and spin structure of exchange-coupled cobalt nanoparticles with an average particle size of 13.7 nm are studied experiment…
Recent experimental evidence for the quantum spin Hall (QSH) state in monolayer WTe$_2$ has bridged two of the most active fields of condensed matter physics, 2D materials and topological physics. This 2D topological crystal also displays unconventional spin-torque and gate-tunable superconductivity. While the realization of QSH has demonstrated the nontrivial topology of the electron wavefunctions of monolayer WTe$_2$, the geometrical properties of the wavefunction, such as the Berry curvature, remain unstudied. On the other hand, it has been increasingly recognized that the Berry curvature p…
The Berry connection plays a central role in our description of the geometric phase and topological phenomena. In condensed matter, it describes the parallel transport of Bloch states and acts as an effective "electromagnetic" vector potential defined in momentum space. Inspired by developments in mathematical physics, where higher-form (Kalb-Ramond) gauge fields were introduced, we hereby explore the existence of "tensor Berry connections" in quantum matter. Our approach consists in a general construction of effective gauge fields, which we ultimately relate to the components of Bloch states.…
Usually $Z_2$ topological insulators are protected by time reversal symmetry. Here, we present a new type of $Z_2$ topological insulators in a cubic lattice which is protected by a novel hidden symmetry, while time reversal symmetry is broken. The hidden symmetry has a composite antiunitary operator consisting of fractional translation, complex conjugation, sublattice exchange, and local gauge transformation. Based on the hidden symmetry, we define the hidden-symmetry polarization and $Z_2$ topological invariant to characterize the topological insulators. The surface states have band structure…
