Spin chains with two Ising symmetries are the Jordan-Wigner duals of one-dimensional interacting fermions with particle-hole and time-reversal symmetry. From earlier works on Majorana chains, it is known that this class of models has 10 distinct topological phases. In this paper, we analyze the physical properties of the correspondent 10 phases of the spin model. In particular, thanks to a set of two non-commuting dualities, we determine the local and non-local order parameters of the phases. We find that 4 phases are topologically protected by the Ising symmetries, while the other 6 break at least one symmetry. Our study highlights the non-trivial relation between the topological classifications of interacting bosons and fermions.
The effect of the canting of local anisotropy axes on the ground-state phase diagram and magnetization of a ferrimagnetic chain with regularly alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins is exactly examined in an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field. It is shown that individual contributions of Ising and Heisenberg spins to the total magnetization basically depend on the spatial orientation of the magnetic field and the canting angle between two different local anisotropy axes of the Ising spins.
We consider a spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ distorted diamond chain with the XYZ interaction between the interstitial Heisenberg dimers, the nearest-neighbor Ising coupling between the nodal and interstitial spins, respectively, and the second-neighbor Ising coupling between the nodal spins. The ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ distorted diamond chain exhibits several intriguing phases due to the XY anisotropy and the second-neighbor interaction, whereas the model can be exactly solved using the transfer-matrix technique. The quantum entanglement within the Heisenberg spin dimers is s…
In the literature, it is known that near the Takhtajan-Babujain point of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-$1$ chain, the low energy theory is captured by three Majorana fermions with a mass sign change, or three Ising chains near the transition. In this paper, we study how the spin-$1$, the Ising spins, and the fermions are related at lattice scale. We construct the spin-$1$ operator out from the Ising spins and fermions, showing that when the Ising chains are in the ordered phase, the spin-$1$ chain is in the dimer phase, and when the Ising chains are in the paramagnetic phase, the spin-$1$ chai…
We study the quantum Ising chain with boundary dephasing. By doubling the Hilbert space, the model is mapped to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with imaginary chemical potential at the edges. We show analytically and numerically that the Liouvillian gap, i.e., the inverse relaxation time of the model, scales with the system size $ N $ as $ N^{-3} $.
The topological degeneracy of ground states in transverse field Ising chain cannot be removed by local perturbation and allows it to be a promising candidate for topological computation. We study the dynamic processes of crystallization and dissolution for the gapped ground states in an Ising chain. For this purpose, the real-space renormalization method is employed to build an effective Hamiltonian that captures the low-energy physics of a given system. We show that the ground state and the first-excited state of an $ \left( N+1\right) $-site chain can be generated from that of the $N$-site o…
We elaborate on the topological order in the Kitaev chain, a p-wave superconductor with nearest-neighbor pairing amplitude equal to the hopping term Delta=t, and chemical potential mu=0. In particular, we write out the explicit eigenstates of the open chain in terms of fermion operators, and show that the states as well as their energy eigenvalues are formally equivalent to those of an Ising chain. The models are physically different, as the topological order in the Kitaev chain corresponds to conventional order in the Ising model.
Rydberg chains provide an appealing platform for probing conformal field theories (CFTs) that capture universal behavior in a myriad of physical settings. Focusing on a Rydberg chain at the Ising transition separating charge density wave and disordered phases, we establish a detailed link between microscopics and low-energy physics emerging at criticality. We first construct lattice incarnations of primary fields in the underlying Ising CFT including chiral fermions -- a nontrivial task given that the Rydberg chain Hamiltonian does not admit an exact fermionization. With this dictionary in han…
We study the concept of "categorical symmetry" introduced recently, which in the most basic sense refers to a pair of dual symmetries, such as the Ising symmetries of the $1d$ quantum Ising model and its self-dual counterpart. In this manuscript we study discrete categorical symmetry at higher dimensional critical points and gapless phases. At these selected gapless states of matter, we can evaluate the behavior of categorical symmetries analytically. We analyze the categorical symmetry at the following examples of criticality: (1) Lifshit critical point of a $(2+1)d$ quantum Ising system; (2)…
Taking the Ising chain as a reference model we have derived a perturbative expression for the free energy density of the Heisenberg-Ising chain with strong easy-axis anisotropy. All calculations are performed on the ground of the Quantum Transfer Matrix approach. The obtained result agrees with the direct high-temperature expansion. It also agrees with the low-temperature cluster expansion in the special subregime when quantum fluctuations are weak against thermodynamical ones.
In the present paper, we proposed a simple spin-1/2 model which provides a exactly solvable example to study the Ising criticality with central charge c=1/2. By mapping it onto the real Majorana fermions, the Ising critical behavior is explored explicitly, although its bosonized form is not the double frequency sine-Gordon model.
We propose to describe correlations in classical and quantum systems in terms of full counting statistics of a suitably chosen discrete observable. The method is illustrated with two exactly solvable examples: the classical one-dimensional Ising model and the quantum spin-1/2 XY chain. For the one-dimensional Ising model, our method results in a phase diagram with two phases distinguishable by the long-distance behavior of the Jordan-Wigner strings. For the quantum XY chain, the method reproduces the previously known phase diagram.
Using rigorous analytical analysis and exact numerical data for the spin-1/2 transverse Ising chain we discuss the effects of regular alternation of the Hamiltonian parameters on the quantum phase transition inherent in the model.
We examine the low frequency spin susceptibility of the paramagnetic phase of the quantum Ising chain in transverse field at temperatures well below the energy gap. We find that the imaginary part is dominated by rare quantum processes in which the number of quasiparticles changes by an odd number. We obtain exact results for the NMR relaxation rate in the low temperature limit for the integrable model with nearest-neighbor Ising interactions, and derive exact universal scaling results applicable to generic Ising chains near the quantum critical point. These results resolve certain discrepanci…
The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ delta-chain (sawtooth chain) with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg basal chain and Ising apical-basal interactions is studied. The basal-apical interactions involve the bond alternation. The limiting cases of the model include the symmetrical delta-chain and the antiferromagnetic chain in the staggered magnetic field. We study ground state properties of the model by the exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. The ground state phase diagram as a function of the bond alternation consists of magnetic and various non-magnetic phases. All phases ex…
We consider a geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain, which is an exactly solvable model when assuming part of the exchange interactions as Heisenberg ones and another part as Ising ones. A small $XY$ part is afterwards perturbatively added to the Ising couplings, which enabled us to derive an effective Hamiltonian describing the low-energy behavior of the modified but full quantum version of the initial model. The effective model is much simpler and free of frustration. It is shown that the $XY$ part added to the originally Ising interaction gives rise to the spin-li…
We study the fidelity susceptibility of quantum antiferromagnetic Ising chain with a long-range power law interaction $1/r^α$ using the large-scale density matrix renormalization group method. We find that the critical adiabatic dimension $μ=2$ and the critical exponent of the correlation length $ν=1$ for arbitrary $α>0$, indicating all quantum phase transitions are second-order Ising transitions. In addition, we numerically determine the complete phase diagram for $0 < α\le 3$ from the data collapse of the fidelity susceptibility and show that the critical point $h_c$ changes monotonously wit…
We consider the time evolution of the gaps of the entanglement spectrum for a block of consecutive sites in finite transverse field Ising chains after sudden quenches of the magnetic field. We provide numerical evidence that, whenever we quench at or across the quantum critical point, the time evolution of the ratios of these gaps allows to obtain universal information. They encode the low-lying gaps of the conformal spectrum of the Ising boundary conformal field theory describing the spatial bipartition within the imaginary time path integral approach to global quenches at the quantum critica…
We present numerically exact results for the spectral function of a single charge carrier that is injected into an Ising chain at finite temperature $T$. Both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling between the Ising spins are considered. The interaction between the carrier and the Ising spins is assumed to be on-site and of Ising type, as well. We find that the carrier's spectral function exhibits a distinctive fine structure of resonances that are due to the temporary entrapping of the carrier inside small magnetic domains. The connection to models of disordered binary alloys where simi…
The ground state and thermodynamic properties of an asymmetric diamond Ising--Hubbard chain with the on-site electron-electron attraction has been considered. The problem can be solved exactly using the decoration-iteration transformation. In the case of the antiferromagnetic Ising interaction, the influence of this attraction on the ground state and the temperature dependences of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat has been studied.
A mixed Ising-Heisenberg spin system consisting of triangular XXZ-Heisenberg spin clusters assembled into a chain by alternating with Ising spins interacting to all three spins in the triangle is considered. The exact solution of the model is given in terms of the generalized decoration--iteration map and within the transfer-matrix technique. Exact expressions for thermodynamic functions are derived. Ground state phase diagrams, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the system are examined.
It is shown that a junction of three quantum Ising chains ($Δ$-junction) can be described as the 2-channel Kondo model in a box which size is of the order of the Ising model correlation length with spin S=1/2 localized at the junction. The local spin is composed of the zero energy boundary Majorana modes of the Ising models.
The magnetocaloric effect in the symmetric spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the Ising four-spin interaction is investigated using the generalized decoration-iteration mapping transformation and the transfer-matrix technique. The entropy and the Gruneisen parameter, which closely relate to the magnetocaloric effect, are exactly calculated to compare the capability of the system to cool in the vicinity of different field-induced ground-state phase transitions during the adiabatic demagnetization.
Most quantum entanglement investigations are focused on two qubits or some finite (small) chain structure, since the infinite chain structure is a considerably cumbersome task. Therefore, the quantum entanglement properties involving an infinite chain structure is quite important, not only because the mathematical calculation is cumbersome but also because real materials are well represented by an infinite chain. Thus, in this paper we consider an entangled diamond chain with Ising and anisotropic Heisenberg (Ising-XXZ) coupling. Two interstitial particles are coupled through Heisenberg coupli…
We investigate the transverse field Ising model on a diamond chain using series expansions about the high-field limit and exact diagonalizations. For the unfrustrated case we accurately determine the quantum critical point and its expected 2d Ising universality separating the polarized and the Z2 symmetry broken phase. In contrast, we find strong evidences for a disorder by disorder scenario for the fully-frustrated transverse field Ising model, i.e. except for the pure Ising model, having an extensive number of ground states, the system is always in a quantum disordered polarized phase. The l…
The spin-1/2 Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain is considered within the perturbative strong-coupling approach, which is developed from the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intradimer and the Ising interdimer couplings. Although the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain exhibits just intermediate plateaux at zero, one-quarter and one-half of the saturation magnetization, the perturbative treatment up to second order stemming from this exactly solvable model additionally corroborates the fractional one-third plateau as well as the gap…
We report a combined analytical and density matrix renormalized group study of the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain subject to a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and a transverse magnetic field. The numerically determined phase diagram of this model, which features two ordered Ising phases and a critical Luttinger liquid one with fully broken spin-rotational symmetry, agrees well with the predictions of Garate and Affleck [Phys. Rev. B 81, 144419 (2010)]. We also confirm the prevalence of the N z Néel Ising order in the regime of comparable DM and magnetic field ma…
Quantum phase transitions induced by an external magnetic field in the Haldane-gapped spin-1 chains are studied in a fermionic field-theoretic description of the model. In the case with broken axial symmetry, two transitions occurs consecutively as increasing the field: $h_c=(m_1 m_2)^{1/2}$ (with $m_1$ and $m_2$ the transverse masses) is the critical Ising point and $\tilde{h}_c^* (> h_c)$ is the commensurate-incommensurate transition point. Although the latter is thermodynamically indiscernible, its property is revealed in the spin correlation functions (both uniform and staggered) which are…
We consider two quantum Ising chains initially prepared at thermal equilibrium but with different temperatures and coupled at a given time through one of their end points. In the long-time limit the system reaches a non-equilibrium steady state. We discuss properties of this non-equilibrium steady state, and characterize the convergence to the steady regime. We compute the mean energy flux through the chain and the large deviation function for the quantum and thermal fluctuations of this energy transfer.
We study the ground state properties of the one-dimensional quarter-filled strongly correlated electronic chain coupled by $J$ to another chain of antiferromagnetic Ising moments. We focus on the case where the large Coulomb interactions localize the charges on every other site. Both the electronic spins and the Ising moments interact antiferromagnetically within each chain by $J_{\rm eff}$ and $J'$, respectively. Since the number of electrons is half as that of the Ising moments the period of magnetic correlation of these two chains are incommensurate. In the presence of $J$, the frustration …
We propose two easy-to-study observables in the quantum Ising chain with open boundary conditions. They measure the length at which boundaries affect the longitudinal or transverse magnetization. We show that their finite-size scaling behaviour encodes the position of the quantum critical point and the universal scaling exponent $ν$. The applicability of proposed observables in small systems is also discussed. We expect that our results will be useful in quantum simulation of spin systems.
Suggesting two versions for the Plakida-Tserkovnikov algorithm breakdown in the low-temperature regime, we derive ordinary and nested Dyson equations for the transverse autocorrelator of the magnetically polarized Ising chain. Using them we get the corresponding low-temperature asymptotics for the autocorrelator. We show that the ordinary Dyson equation results in a correct $o({\rm e}^{-βE_{gap}})$ account of the magnon creation process, while the nested Dyson equation additionally gives the correct $o({\rm e}^{-βE_{gap}})$ contribution associated with transitions from magnons to bound two-mag…
We study the time evolution in the transverse-field Ising chain subject to quantum quenches of finite duration, ie, a continuous change in the transverse magnetic field over a finite time. Specifically, we consider the dynamics of the total energy, one- and two-point correlation functions and Loschmidt echo during and after the quench as well as their stationary behaviour at late times. We investigate how different quench protocols affect the dynamics and identify universal properties of the relaxation.
In a recent experiment on CoNb_2O_6, Coldea et al. [Science 327, 177 (2010)] found for the first time experimental evidence of the exceptional Lie algebra E_8. The emergence of this symmetry was theoretically predicted long ago for the transverse quantum Ising chain in the presence of a weak longitudinal field. We consider an accurate microscopic model of CoNb_2O_6 incorporating additional couplings and calculate numerically the dynamical structure function using a recently developed matrix-product-state method. The excitation spectra show bound states characteristic of the weakly broken E_8 s…
We numerically explore $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetric random interacting Ising-Majorana chains at high energy. A very rich phase diagram emerges with two topologically distinct many-body localization (MBL) regimes separated by a much broader thermal phase than previously found. This is a striking consequence of the avalanche theory. We further find MBL spin-glass order always associated to a many-body spectral pairing, presumably signaling a strong zero mode operator which opens fascinating perspectives for MBL-protected topological qubits.
We consider the ground-state properties of the s=1/2 Ising chain in a transverse field which varies regularly along the chain having a period of alternation 2. Such a model, similarly to its uniform counterpart, exhibits quantum phase transitions. However, the number and the position of the quantum phase transition points depend on the strength of transverse field modulation. The behaviour in the vicinity of the critical field in most cases remains the same as for the uniform chain (i.e. belongs to the square-lattice Ising model universality class). However, a new critical behaviour may also a…
A structural and thermodynamic study of the newly synthesized single crystal Sr5Rh4O12 is reported. Sr5Rh4O12 consists of a triangular lattice of spin chains running along the c-axis. It is antiferromagnetically ordered below 23 K with the intrachain and interchain coupling being ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM), respectively. There is strong evidence for an Ising character in the interaction and geometrical frustration that causes incomplete long-range AFM order. The isothermal magnetization exhibits two step-like transitions leading to a ferrimagnetic state at 2.4 T and a FM st…
We show that a junction of three off-critical quantum Ising chains can be regarded as a quantum spin chain realization of the two-channel spin-1/2 overscreened Kondo effect with two superconducting leads. We prove that, as long as the Kondo temperature is larger than the superconducting gap, the equivalent Kondo model flows towards the 2 channel Kondo fixed point. We argue that our system provides the first controlled realization of 2 channel Kondo effect with superconducting leads. This, besides its the theoretical interest, is of importance for potential applications to a number of context, …
In this general article, we map the one-dimensional transverse field quantum Ising model of ferromagnetism to Kitaev's one-dimensional p-wave superconductor, which has its application in fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. Mapping Pauli's spin operators of transverse Ising chain to spinless fermionic creation and annihilation operators by Inverse Jordan-Wigner transformation leads to a Hamiltonian form closely related to Kitaev Chain, which exhibits topological phase transition where phases are characterized by different topological invariant that changes discontinuously at the trans…
We investigate emergent quantum dynamics of the tilted Ising chain in the regime of a weak transverse field. Within the leading order perturbation theory, the Hilbert space is fragmented into exponentially many decoupled sectors. We find that the sector made of isolated magnons is integrable with dynamics being governed by a constrained version of the XXZ spin Hamiltonian. As a consequence, when initiated in this sector, the Ising chain exhibits ballistic transport on unexpectedly long times scales. We quantitatively describe its rich phenomenology employing exact integrable techniques such as…
We report on a member of the spin-disordered honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet in a quasi-one-dimensional cobaltate Ba_3Co_2O_6(CO_3)_0.7. Resistivity exhibits as semimetallic along the face-sharing CoO6 chains. Magnetic susceptibility shows strongly anisotropic Ising-spin character with the easy axis along the chain due to significant spin-orbit coupling and a trigonal crystal field. Nevertheless, ^135Ba NMR detects no indication of the long-range magnetic order down to 0.48 K. Marginally itinerant electrons possess large entropy and low-lying excitations with a Wilson ratio R_W = 116, which …
We study the influence of Ohmic dissipation on the random transverse-field Ising chain by means of large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations. To this end, we first map the Hamiltonian onto a classical Ising model with long-range $1/τ^2$ interaction in the time-like direction. We then apply the highly efficient cluster algorithm proposed by Luijten and Blöte for system with long-range interactions. Our simulations show that Ohmic dissipation destroys the infinite-randomness quantum critical point of the dissipationless system. Instead, the quantum phase transition between the paramagnetic and ferroma…
We explore the phase diagram of Ising spins on one-dimensional chains which criss-cross in two perpendicular directions and which are connected by interchain couplings. This system is of interest as a simpler, classical analog of a quantum Hamiltonian which has been proposed as a model of magnetic behavior in Nb$_{12}$O$_{29}$ and also, conceptually, as a geometry which is intermediate between one and two dimensions. Using mean field theory as well as Metropolis Monte Carlo and Wang-Landau simulations, we locate quantitatively the boundaries of four ordered phases. Each becomes an effective Is…
The magnetic analog of the Grüneisen parameter, i.e., the magnetocaloric effect, is a valuable tool for studying field-tuned quantum phase transitions. We determine the magnetic Grüneisen parameter of the one-dimensional random transverse-field Ising model, focusing on its low-temperature behavior at the exotic infinite-randomness quantum critical point and in the associated quantum Griffiths phases. We present extensive numerical simulations showing that the magnetic Grüneisen parameter diverges logarithmically with decreasing temperature in the quantum Griffiths phase. It changes sign right …
An exactly solvable model of the sawtooth chain with Ising and Heisenberg bonds and with coupling to lattice distortion for Heisenberg bonds is considered in the magnetic field. Using the direct transfer-matrix formalism an exact description of the thermodynamic functions is obtained. The ground state phase diagrams for all regions of parameters values containing phases corresponding to the magnetization plateaus at $M=0,1/4$ and 1/2 have been obtained. Exact formulas for bond distortions for various ground states are presented. A novel mechanism of magnetization plateau stabilization correspo…
Non-local orders, entanglement entropy, and quantum fidelity are investigated in an infinite-size bond-alternating Ising chain with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction by employing the infinite matrix product state representation with the infinite time evolving block decimation method. Directly computing two distinct types of finite string correlations for very large lattice distances, in contrast to an extrapolated extreme value for finite size chains, reveals two topologically ordered phases. As the bond alternation varies, a topological quantum phase transition with continuously variable …
We present the microscopic view for the excitations around the 1/3 plateau state of the Ising-like zigzag XXZ chain. We analyze the low-energy excitations around the plateau with the degenerating perturbation theory from the Ising limit, combined with the Bethe-form wave function. We then find that the domain-wall particles carrying $S^z=\pm 1/3$ and its bound state of $S^z=\pm 2/3$ describe well the low-energy excitations around the 1/3 plateau state. The formation of the bound state of the domain-walls clearly provides the microscopic mechanism of the cusp singularities and the even-odd beha…
We study the transverse susceptibility of the fully frustrated antiferromagnetic Ising $Δ$-chain, extending Minami's transfer-matrix method for the transverse susceptibility of general-type Ising linear-chains [JPSJ 67,1998,2255]. For transverse fields $Γ_1$ on tip spin sites and $Γ_2$ on bottom spin sites, we calculate zero-field transverse-susceptibilities $χ_{tip}^x=\lim_{Γ_1,Γ_2 -> 0}M_{tip}^x/Γ_1$ and $χ_{bottom}^x=\lim_{Γ_1,Γ_2 -> 0}M^x_{bottom}/Γ_2$, where $M_{tip (bottom)}^x$ denotes the magnetization for tip (bottom) spin sites. Both the transverse susceptibilities follow Curie's law …
Near the transverse-field induced quantum critical point of the Ising chain, an exotic dynamic spectrum consisting of exactly eight particles was predicted, which is uniquely described by an emergent quantum integrable field theory with the symmetry of the $E_8$ Lie algebra, but rarely explored experimentally. Here we use high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy to resolve quantum spin dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ in an applied transverse field. By comparing to an analytical calculation of the dynamical spin correlations, we identify $E_8$ partic…
