The magnetic analog of the Grüneisen parameter, i.e., the magnetocaloric effect, is a valuable tool for studying field-tuned quantum phase transitions. We determine the magnetic Grüneisen parameter of the one-dimensional random transverse-field Ising model, focusing on its low-temperature behavior at the exotic infinite-randomness quantum critical point and in the associated quantum Griffiths phases. We present extensive numerical simulations showing that the magnetic Grüneisen parameter diverges logarithmically with decreasing temperature in the quantum Griffiths phase. It changes sign right at criticality. These results confirm a recent strong-disorder renormalization group theory. We also compare our findings to the behavior of the clean transverse-field Ising chain.
We study the time evolution in the transverse-field Ising chain subject to quantum quenches of finite duration, ie, a continuous change in the transverse magnetic field over a finite time. Specifically, we consider the dynamics of the total energy, one- and two-point correlation functions and Loschmidt echo during and after the quench as well as their stationary behaviour at late times. We investigate how different quench protocols affect the dynamics and identify universal properties of the relaxation.
We investigate the quench dynamics of the transverse field Ising model on a finite fully connected lattice as a prime example of non-equilibrium mean field dynamics. Using a rate function approach we compute the leading order corrections to the mean field behavior analytically. Our focus is threefold: i) We analyze the validity of the mean field approximation and observe that deviations can occur quickly even for large systems. ii) We study the variance of the order parameter and identify four qualitative different regions that cannot be distinguished by solely looking at its mean. iii) We der…
Motivated by recent experiments with a Penning ion trap quantum simulator, we perform numerically exact Stochastic Series Expansion quantum Monte Carlo simulations of long-range transverse-field Ising models on a triangular lattice for different decay powers $α$ of the interactions. The phase boundary for the ferromagnet is obtained as a function of $α$. For antiferromagnetic interactions, there is strong indication that the transverse field stabilizes a clock ordered phase with sublattice magnetization $(M,-\frac{M}{2}, -\frac{M}{2})$ with unsaturated $M < 1$ in a process known as "order by d…
We study quantum quenches in the transverse-field Ising model defined on different lattice geometries such as chains, two- and three-leg ladders, and two-dimensional square lattices. Starting from fully polarized initial states, we consider the dynamics of the transverse and the longitudinal magnetization for quenches to weak, strong, and critical values of the transverse field. To this end, we rely on an efficient combination of numerical linked cluster expansions (NLCEs) and a forward propagation of pure states in real time. As a main result, we demonstrate that NLCEs comprising solely recta…
The transverse-field Ising model is one of the fundamental models in quantum many-body systems, yet a full understanding of its dynamics remains elusive in higher than one dimension. Here, we show for the first time the breakdown of ergodicity in $d$-dimensional Ising models with a weak transverse field in a prethermal regime. We demonstrate that novel Hilbert-space fragmentation occurs in the effective non-integrable model with $d\geq2$ as a consequence of only one emergent global conservation law of the domain wall number. Our results indicate nontrivial initial-state dependence for non-equi…
Working within the Stochastic Series Expansion (SSE) framework, we construct efficient quantum cluster algorithms for transverse field Ising antiferromagnets on the pyrochlore lattice and the planar pyrochlore lattice, for the fully frustrated square lattice Ising model in a transverse field (dual to the 2+1 dimensional odd Ising gauge theory), and for a transverse field Ising model with multi-spin interactions on the square lattice, which is dual to a 2+1 dimensional even Ising gauge theory (and reduces to the two dimensional quantum loop model in a certain limit). Our cluster algorithms use …
The quantum-critical properties of the transverse-field Ising model with algebraically decaying interactions are investigated by means of stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo, on both the one-dimensional linear chain and the two-dimensional square lattice. We extract the critical exponents $ν$ and $β$ as a function of the decay exponent of the long-range interactions. For ferromagnetic Ising interactions, we resolve the limiting regimes known from field theory, ranging from the nearest-neighbor Ising to the long-range Gaussian universality classes, as well as the intermediate regime…
The antiferromagnetic Ising model on the pyrochlore lattice exhibits a quantum phase transition in an applied transverse field from the low-field quantum spin-ice phase to the high-field polarized regime. Recent field-theoretical analysis and series expansion results indicate this to be a discontinuous, first-order transition. Here, we explore this transition using quantum Monte Carlo simulations in order to assess this scenario and study the thermodynamic properties in the vicinity of the quantum phase transition. For this purpose, we also consider several variants of extended cluster-update …
Transverse field Ising model is a common model in quantum magnetism and is often illustrated as an example for quantum phase transition. Its physical origin in quantum magnets, however, is actually not quite well-understood. The quantum mechanical properties of this model on frustrated systems are not well-understood either. We here clarify the physical origin, both extrinsic one and intrinsic one, for the transverse field of the quantum Ising model, and then explain the quantum effects in the Kagome system. We discuss the quantum plaquette order and the quantum phase transition out of this or…
We consider the time evolution of the gaps of the entanglement spectrum for a block of consecutive sites in finite transverse field Ising chains after sudden quenches of the magnetic field. We provide numerical evidence that, whenever we quench at or across the quantum critical point, the time evolution of the ratios of these gaps allows to obtain universal information. They encode the low-lying gaps of the conformal spectrum of the Ising boundary conformal field theory describing the spatial bipartition within the imaginary time path integral approach to global quenches at the quantum critica…
We identify quantum many-body scars in the transverse field quantum Ising model on a ladder. We make explicit how the corresponding (mid spectrum, low entanglement) many-body eigenstates can be approximated by injecting quasi-particle excitations into an exact, zero-energy eigenstate, which is of valence bond solid type. Next, we present a systematic construction of product states characterized, in the limit of a weak transverse field, by a sharply peaked local density of states. We describe how the construction of these "peak states" generalizes to arbitrary dimension and show that on the lad…
We investigate the influence of light-matter interactions on correlated quantum matter by studying the paradigmatic Ising model subject to a quantum Rabi coupling. This type of coupling to a confined, spatially delocalized bosonic light mode, such as provided by an optical resonator, resembles a quantized transverse magnetic field of tunable strength. As a consequence, the symmetry-broken magnetic state breaks down for strong enough light-mater interactions to a paramagnetic state. The non-local character of the bosonic mode can change the quantum phase transition in a drastic manner, which we…
There has been considerable recent progress in identifying candidate materials for the transverse-field Ising chain (TFIC), a paradigmatic model for quantum criticality. Here, we study the local spin dynamical structure factor of different spin components in the quantum disordered region of the TFIC. We show that the low-frequency local dynamics of the spins in the Ising- and transverse-field directions have strikingly distinctive temperature dependencies. This leads to the thermal-activation gap for the secular term of the NMR $1/T_2^{\prime}$ relaxation rate to be half of that for the $1/T_1…

The paradigmatic example of a continuous quantum phase transition is the transverse field Ising ferromagnet. In contrast to classical critical systems, whose properties depend only on symmetry and the dimension of space, the nature of a quantum phase transition also depends on the dynamics. In the transverse field Ising model, the order parameter is not conserved and increasing the transverse field enhances quantum fluctuations until they become strong enough to restore the symmetry of the ground state. Ising pseudo-spins can represent the order parameter of any system with a two-fold degenera…
Suggesting two versions for the Plakida-Tserkovnikov algorithm breakdown in the low-temperature regime, we derive ordinary and nested Dyson equations for the transverse autocorrelator of the magnetically polarized Ising chain. Using them we get the corresponding low-temperature asymptotics for the autocorrelator. We show that the ordinary Dyson equation results in a correct $o({\rm e}^{-βE_{gap}})$ account of the magnon creation process, while the nested Dyson equation additionally gives the correct $o({\rm e}^{-βE_{gap}})$ contribution associated with transitions from magnons to bound two-mag…

The quantum criticality of an Ising-like screw chain antiferromagnet SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, with a transverse magnetic field applied along the crystalline $a$-axis, is investigated by ultra-low temperature NMR measurements. The Néel temperature is rapidly and continuously suppressed by the field, giving rise to a quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_{C{_1}}$$\approx$~7.0~T. Surprisingly, a second QCP at $H_{C{_2}}\approx$~7.7~T featured with gapless excitations is resolved from both the double-peak structure of the field dependent spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/^{51}T_1$ at low temperatures and th…
The temperature and transverse field dependence of the entropy and the specific heat of ferroics in the quantum paramagnetic (QPa) state is investigated using the transverse Ising model (TIM) with different spin values within mean field and Gaussian spin fluctuation approximations. A maximum peak of the temperature dependence of the specific heat curves is enhanced in the QPa state due to spin fluctuations. This peak shifts to higher temperature region and its magnitude reduces with increasing transverse field. In addition, the temperature corresponding to this maximum depends linearly on the …
To gain a better understanding of the interplay between frustrated long-range interactions and zero-temperature quantum fluctuations, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the transverse-field Ising model with algebraically-decaying long-range Ising interactions on quasi one-dimensional infinite-cylinder triangular lattices. Technically, we apply various approaches including low- and high-field series expansions. For the classical long-range Ising model, we investigate cylinders with an arbitrary even circumference. We show the occurrence of gapped stripe-ordered phases emerging out…
We study the effect of antiferromagnetic longitudinal coupling on the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model with nearest-neighbour couplings. In the topological phase where, in the thermodynamic limit, the ground state is twofold degenerate, we show that, for a finite system of N sites, the longitudinal coupling induces N level crossings between the two lowest lying states as a function of the field. We also provide strong arguments suggesting that these N level crossings all appear simultaneously as soon as the longitudinal coupling is switched on. This conclusion is based on perturbat…
We describe a simple quantum error correcting code built out of a time-dependent transverse field Ising model. The code is similar to a repetition code, but has two advantages: an $N$-qubit code can be implemented with a finite-depth spatially local unitary circuit, and it can subsequently protect against both $X$ and $Z$ errors if $N\ge 10$ is even. We propose an implementation of this code with 10 ultracold Rydberg atoms in optical tweezers, along with further generalizations of the code.
We report on spectroscopy study of elementary magnetic excitations in an Ising-like antiferromagnetic chain compound SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature and applied transverse magnetic field up to 25 T. An optical as well as an acoustic branch of confined spinons, the elementary excitations at zero field, are identified in the antiferromagnetic phase below the Néel temperature of 5 K and described by a one-dimensional Schrödinger equation. The confinement can be suppressed by an applied transverse field and a quantum disordered phase is induced at 7 T. In this disordered paramagnet…
