We investigate the inverse freezing in the fermionic Ising spin-glass (FISG) model in a transverse field $Γ$. The grand canonical potential is calculated in the static approximation, replica symmetry and one-step replica symmetry breaking Parisi scheme. It is argued that the average occupation per site $n$ is strongly affected by $Γ$. As consequence, the boundary phase is modified and, therefore, the reentrance associated with the inverse freezing is modified too.
We report on a thorough dielectric investigation of the glass-like freezing of the orbital reorientation-dynamics, recently found for the crystalline sulpho-spinels FeCr2S4 and FeSc2S4. As the orbital reorientations are coupled to a rearrangement of the surrounding ionic lattice via the Jahn-Teller effect, the freezing of the orbital moments is revealed by a relaxational behaviour of the complex dielectric permittivity. Additional conductivity (both dc and ac) and contact contributions showing up in the spectra are taken into account by an equivalent circuit description. The orbital relaxation…
Broadband dielectric spectroscopy has been performed on single-crystalline FeCr2S4 revealing a transition into a low-temperature orbital glass phase and on polycrystalline FeCr2S4 where long-range orbital order is established via a cooperative Jahn-Teller transition. The freezing of the orbital moments is revealed by a clear relaxational behavior of the dielectric permittivity, which allows a unique characterization of the orbital glass transition. The orbital relaxation dynamics continuously slows down over six decades in time, before at the lowest temperatures the glass transition becomes su…
It is well-known that spontaneous symmetry breaking in one spatial dimension is thermodynamically forbidden at finite energy density. Here we show that mirror-symmetric disorder in an interacting quantum system can invert this paradigm, yielding spontaneous breaking of mirror symmetry only at finite energy density and giving rise to "mirror-glass" order. The mirror-glass transition, which is driven by a finite density of interacting excitations, is enabled by many-body localization, and appears to occur simultaneously with the localization transition. This counterintuitive manifestation of loc…
Comment on the paper "Absence of the Mott Glass Phase in 1D Disordered Fermionic Systems" by T. Nattermann, A. Petkovic, Z. Ristivojevic, and F. Schutze, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 186402 (2007).
We present ac susceptibility measurements with the frequency spanning three orders of magnitude on single grain, icosahedral R - Mg - Zn (R = rare earth) quasicrystals. The freezing temperature in Gd-based, Heisenberg spin glasses in this family increases by ~ 2% with a frequency increase from 10 Hz to 10 kHz, whereas the freezing temperature in the non-Heisenberg members of the family is significantly more responsive to the frequency change (by 16 - 22 %), suggesting that an additional magnetic anisotropy distribution in the non-Heisenberg spin glasses causes changes in the low frequency magn…
Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, we show that upon cooling a spatially anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet Ag$_2$MnO$_2$ freezes below $T_f ~\sim 50$ K into short range collinear state. The static spin correlations are extremely two-dimensional, and the spin fluctuations are gapless with two characteristic relaxation rates that behave linearly with temperature.
We report large effects of Parisi replica permutation symmetry breaking (RPSB) on elementary excitations of fermionic systems with frustrated magnetic interactions. The electronic density of states is obtained exactly in the zero temperature limit for (K=1)-step RPSB together with exact relations for arbitrary breaking K, which lead to a new fermionic and dynamical Parisi solution at K=\infty. The Ward identity for charge conservation indicates RPSB-effects on the conductivity in metallic quantum spin glasses. This implies that RPSB is essential for any fermionic system showing spin glass sect…
It is a salient experimental fact that a large fraction of candidate spin liquid materials freeze as the temperature is lowered. The question naturally arises whether such freezing is intrinsic to the spin liquid ("disorder-free glassiness") or extrinsic, in the sense that a topological phase simply coexists with standard freezing of impurities. Here, we demonstrate a surprising third alternative, namely that freezing and topological liquidity are inseparably linked. The topological phase reacts to the introduction of disorder by generating degrees of freedom of a new type (along with interact…
We report low temperature (1.8-15 K) ac magnetic susceptibility and isothermal remanent magnetization behavior for the single crystalline form of Dy2PdSi3, crystallizing in a AlB2-derived hexagonal structure, for two orientations. The results, while confirming the existence of two magnetic transitions, one at 8 K and the other at 2.5 K, as inferred from previous dc magnetization studies, suggest that the 2.5K-transition is spin-glass-like, with an interesting sensitivity to the application of an external dc magnetic field. Thus, this compound appears to undergo a transition from antiferromagne…
This article reviews recent progress of the analytical theory of quantum spin glasses (QSG). Exact results for infinite range and one loop renormalisation group calculations for finite range models of either insulating or metallic type are presented. We describe characteristics of fermionic spin glass transitions and of fermionic correlations which are affected by these transitions and by spin glass order. Connections between tricritical thermal-- and $T=0$ QSG transitions are described. A general phase diagram with tricritical QSG transitions caused either by random chemical potential or by e…
We provide evidence for spin glass related magnetic gaps in the fermionic density of states below the freezing temperature. Model calculations are presented and proposed to be relevant for explaining resistivity measurements which observe a crossover from variable-range- to activated behavior. The magnetic field dependence of a hardgap and the low temperature decay of the density of states are given. In models with fermion transport a new metal-insulator transition is predicted to occur due to the spin-glass gap, anteceding the spin glass to quantum paramagnet transition at smaller spin densit…
The fermionic Ising spin glass is analyzed for arbitrary filling and for all temperatures. A selforganized 3-band structure of the model is obtained in the magnetically ordered phase. Deviation from half filling generates a central nonmagnetic band, which becomes sharply separated at T=0 by (pseudo)gaps from upper and lower magnetic bands. Replica symmetry breaking effects are derived for several observables and correlations. They determine the shape of the 3-band DoS, and, for given chemical potential, influence the fermion filling strongly in the low temperature regime.
In the iron--chromium system, Fe$_{x}$Cr$_{1-x}$, a wide dome of spin-glass behavior emerges when the ferromagnetism of iron is suppressed and the antiferromagnetism of chromium emerges as a function of increasing iron content $x$. As both, the high-temperature state and the characteristic cluster size vary as a function of $x$, different regimes of spin-glass behavior may be compared in a single, isostructural material system. Here, we report a study of the spin dynamics across the freezing process into the spin-glass state for different iron concentrations ($x = 0.145$, $0.175$, $0.21$) usin…
We report the results of neutron diffraction, ac and dc magnetization, heat-capacity, complex permittivity, and pyrocurrent measurements on an oxide, Li3NiRuO5, hitherto not paid much attention in the literature, except for a previous report on its promising electrochemical performance. We emphasize on the following findings: (i) Observation of re-entrant spin-glass behavior; that is, this oxide undergoes ferrilmagnetic ordering below 8- K, entering spin-glass regime around 12 K. (ii) There is no prominent feature in the complex dielectric permittivity (in particular, at the magnetic transitio…
We present details of the phase diagrams of fermionic systems with random and frustrated interactions, emphasizing the important role of the chemical potential. The insulating fermionic Ising spin glass model is shown to reveal different entangled magnetic instabilities and phase transitions. We review tricritical phenomena related to the strong correspondence between charge and spin fluctuations, being controlled by quantum statistics. We compare the spin density diluted Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass with classical spin 1 models such as the BEG model. We analyse in detail the infinite ra…
We study a fermionic version of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model including nearest-neighbor hopping on a $\infty$-dimensional simple cubic lattices. The problem is reduced to one of free fermions moving in a dynamical effective random medium. By means of a CPA method we derive a set of self-consistency equations for the spin glass order parameter and for the Fourier components of the local spin susceptibility. In order to solve these equations numerically we employ an approximation scheme which restricts the dynamics to a feasible number of the leading Fourier components. From a sequence of s…
The fermionic Ising spin glass models in a transverse field are investigated in a Grassmann path integral formalism. The Parisi's scheme of one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) is used within the static ansatz. This formalism has already been applied in a theory in which $m$ (Parisi's block-size parameter) is taken as a constant (PRB 72, 014447 (2005)). Now, it is extended to consider $m$ as a variational parameter. In this case, the results show that RSB is present when $T\to0$, in which the system is driven by quantum fluctuations.
We investigate the spin-glass transition in the strongly frustrated well-known compound $Fe_2TiO_5$. A remarkable feature of this transition, widely discussed in the literature, is its anisotropic properties: the transition manifests itself in the magnetic susceptibly only along one axis, despite $Fe^{3+}$ $d^5$ spins having no orbital component. We demonstrate, using neutron scattering, that below the transition temperature $T_g = 55 K$, $Fe_2TiO_5$ develops nanoscale surfboard shaped antiferromagnetic regions in which the $Fe^{3+}$ spins are aligned perpendicular to the axis which exhibits f…
We show that fermion systems with random interactions lead to strong coupling of glassy order and fermionic correlations, which culminates in the implementation of Parisi replica permutation symmetry breaking (RPSB) in their T=0 quantum field theories. Precursor effects below fermionic AT-lines become stronger as the temperature decreases and play a crucial role within the entire low T regime. The Parisi ultrametric structure is shown to determine low energy excitations and the dynamic behaviour of fermionic correlations for large times, which is predicted to affect transport properties in met…
High-$T_{\rm{c}}$ cuprate superconductors host spin, charge and lattice instabilities. In particular, in the antiferromagnetic glass phase, over a large doping range, lanthanum based cuprates display a glass-like spin freezing with antiferromagnetic correlations. Previously, sound velocity anomalies in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) for hole doping $p\geq 0.145$ were reported and interpreted as arising from a coupling of the lattice to the magnetic glass [Frachet, Vinograd et al., Nat. Phys. 16, 1064-1068 (2020)]. Here we report both sound velocity and attenuation in LSCO $p=0.12$, i.e. at a…
The interplay between geometric frustration (GF) and bond disorder is studied in the Ising kagome lattice within a cluster approach. The model considers antiferromagnetic (AF) short-range couplings and long-range intercluster disordered interactions. The replica formalism is used to obtain an effective single cluster model from where the thermodynamics is analyzed by exact diagonalization. We found that the presence of GF can introduce cluster freezing at very low levels of disorder. The system exhibits an entropy plateau followed by a large entropy drop close to the freezing temperature. In t…
Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$ is a geometrically frustrated spin dimer compound. We investigate the effect of site disorder on the zero field phase diagram of this material by considering the solid solution Ba$_{3}$(Mn$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{8}$, where nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ ions partially substitute magnetic Mn$^{5+}$ ions. This substitution results in unpaired $S=1$ moments for half-substituted dimers, which are ungapped and therefore susceptible to types of magnetic order not present in the parent compound. AC susceptibility measurements of compositions between $x=0.046$ and $x=0.84$ show a sharp frequ…
The competition between spin glass ($SG$) and antiferromagnetic order ($AF$) is analyzed in two sublattice fermionic Ising models in the presence of a transverse $Γ$ and a parallel $H$ magnetic fields. The exchange interaction follows a Gaussian probability distribution with mean $-4J_0/N$ and standard deviation $J\sqrt{32/N}$, but only spins in different sublattices can interact. The problem is formulated in a path integral formalism, where the spin operators have been expressed as bilinear combinations of Grassmann fields. The results of two fermionic models are compared. In the first one, t…
Spin glasses are systems whose magnetic moments freeze at low temperature into random orientations without long-range order. It is generally accepted that both frustration and disorder are essential ingredients in all spin glasses, so it was surprising that PrAu2Si2, a stoichiometric compound with a well-ordered crystal structure, was reported to exhibit spin glass freezing. In this article, we report on inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the crystal field excitations, which show that PrAu2Si2 has a singlet ground state and that the exchange coupling is very close to the critical val…
The critical regime of the charge exchange (CE) manganite spin glass Eu_{0.5}Ba_{0.5}MnO_{3} is investigated using linear and non linear magnetic susceptibility and the divergence of the third ordered susceptibility (chi{_3}) signifying the onset of a conventional freezing transition is experimentally demonstrated. The divergence in chi{_3}, dynamical scaling of the linear susceptibility and relevant scaling equations are used to determine the critical exponents associated with this freezing transition, the values of which match well with the 3D Ising universality class. Magnetic field depende…
The one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) is used to study a two-sublattice fermionic infinite-range Ising spin glass (SG) model in a transverse field $Γ$. The problem is formulated in a Grassmann path integral formalism within the static approximation. In this model, a parallel magnetic field $H$ breaks the symmetry of the sublattices. It destroys the antiferromagnetic (AF) order, but it can favor the nonergodic mixed phase (SG+AF) characterizing an asymmetric RSB region. In this region, intra-sublattice disordered interactions $V$ increase the difference between the RSB solutions of each …
We report on 139La and 63Ccu NMR/NQR measurements in the high-Tc superconductor La1.90Sr0.10CuO4 with Tc=26.5 K. Spin fluctuations probed by 139La spin-lattice relaxation (T1), continuously slow down on cooling through Tc. We argue that spin-freezing and superconductivity are bulk effects in this sample. Thus, both phenomena have to coexist microscopically. The distribution of 139La T1 values at low temperature reveals a wide spread of spin fluctuation frequencies in CuO2 planes. A simple estimate shows that Cu nuclei at sites where electronic fluctuations are the slowest are not observable be…
We have studied the liquid - solid (L-S) phase transition of ^4He confined in nanoporous glass, which has interconnected nanopores of 2.5 nm in diameter. The L-S boundary is determined by the measurements of pressure and thermal response during slow cooling and warming. Below 1 K, the freezing pressure is elevated to 1.2 MPa from the bulk freezing pressure, and appears to be independent of temperature. The T-independent L-S boundary implies the existence of a localized Bose-Einstein condensation state, in which long-range superfluid coherence is destroyed by narrowness of the nanopores and ran…
In the present work it is studied the fermionic van Hemmen model for the spin glass (SG) with a transverse magnetic field $Γ$. In this model, the spin operators are written as a bilinear combination of fermionic operators, which allows the analysis of the interplay between charge and spin fluctuations in the presence of a quantum spin flipping mechanism given by $Γ$. The problem is expressed in the fermionic path integral formalism. As results, magnetic phase diagrams of temperature versus the ferromagnetic interaction are obtained for several values of chemical potential $μ$ and $Γ$. The $Γ$ …
We study the competition between a random potential and a commensurate potential on interacting fermionic and bosonic systems using a variety of methods. We focus on one dimensional interacting fermionic systems but higher dimensional bosonic and fermionic extensions, as well as classical equivalents are also discussed. Our methods which include bosonization, replica variational method, functional renormalization group (RG) and perturbation around the atomic limit, go beyond conventional perturbative expansions around the Luttinger liquid in one dimension. All these methods agree on the predic…
Studies of low-frequency resistance noise show that the glassy freezing of the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in Si in the vicinity of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) persists in parallel magnetic fields B of up to 9 T. At low B, both the glass transition density $n_g$ and $n_c$, the critical density for the MIT, increase with B such that the width of the metallic glass phase ($n_c<n_s<n_g$) increases with B. At higher B, where the 2DES is spin polarized, $n_c$ and $n_g$ no longer depend on B. Our results demonstrate that charge, as opposed to spin, degrees of freedom are responsi…
Resistivity and magnetization measurements are used for studying the transverse sliding of AF domain boundaries in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}. We discuss that it is the freezing of the transverse boundary motion that is responsible for the appearance of ``spin-glass'' features at low temperatures.
In this report, the magnetic behaviour of $NiCr_{2}O_{4}$ bulk and nanoparticle samples under different applied magnetic field has been investigated extensively. Nanoparticles of $NiCr_{2}O_{4}$ were obtained by mechanical milling of polycrystalline powder prepared by polyol method. FC-ZFC measurement of bulk at different applied magnetic field has revealed the existence of a ferrimagnetic transition around 66K followed by an antiferromagnetic transition close to 30K. However, its nano counterpart has shown remarkable change in magnetic properties - a suppression of ferrimagnetic transition ac…
We present here a new mechanism of high-T_c (critical temperature) superconductivity. This new model is able to explain all the HTSC (high-T_c superconductivity) properties, like high T_c, origin and nature of NSPG (normal state pseudogap), anomalous superconducting state (SS) energy gap (SSEG) properties, absence of NMR spin relaxation rate coherence peak, existence of NSPG below T_c, nature of high-T_c magnetic superconductivity, external magnetic field (H) dependence of the NSPG formation temperature T^*, etc. The coexistence of NSPG and SS BCS enegy gap (EG), below T_c, has been predicted …
We report the results of magnetic measurements for the solid solution Ce$_2$Au$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si$_3$. The results reveal that this solid solution is characterized by a magnetic phase diagram (plot of magnetic transition temperature versus $x$) unusual for Kondo lattices. In particular, the spin-glass freezing induced by disorder is observed only for the compositions at the weak coupling limit; as one approaches the quantum critical point by a gradual replacement of Au by Co, this disorder effect is surprisingly suppressed in favor of long range antiferro-magnetic ordering in contrast to expectat…
We investigate the properties of an effective Hamiltonian with competing interactions involving spin and chirality variables, relevant for the description of the {\it trimerized} version of the spin-1/2 {\it kagome} antiferromagnet. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations, we show that remarkable behaviors develop at very low temperatures. Through an {\it order by disorder} mechanism, the low-energy states are characterized by a dynamical freezing of the chiralities, which decouples the lattice into ``dimers'' and ``triangles'' of antiferromagnetically coupled spins. Under the presence of an e…
We present elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering measurements characterizing peculiar short-range charge-orbital and spin order in the layered perovskite material La1.5Sr0.5CoO4. We find that below Tc~750 K holes introduced by Sr doping lose mobility and enter a statically ordered {\it charge glass} phase with loosely correlated checkerboard arrangement of empty and occupied d{3z2-r2} orbitals (Co3+ and Co2+). The dynamics of the resultant mixed spin system is governed by the anisotropic nature of the crystal-field Hamiltonian and the peculiar exchange pattern produced by the orbital ord…
La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$NiO$_4$ develops charge and spin stripe orders at temperatures of roughly 200 K, with modulation wave vectors that are temperature independent. Various probes of spin and charge response have provided independent evidence for some sort of change below $\sim50$ K. In combination with a new set of neutron scattering measurements, we propose a unified interpretation of all of these observations in terms of a freezing of Ni-centered charges stripes, together with a glassy ordering of the spin stripes that shows up in neutron scattering as a slight rotation of the average spin…
We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of a new cubic spinel LiZn$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{8}$ (LZVO) through x-ray diffraction, dc and ac susceptibility, magnetic relaxation, aging, memory effect, heat capacity and $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. A Curie-Weiss fit of the dc susceptibility $χ_{\mathrm{dc}}$($\mathit{T}$) yields a Curie-Weiss temperature $\mathrmθ_{\mathrm{CW}}$ = -185 K. This suggests strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions among the magnetic vanadium ions. The dc and ac susceptibility data indicate the spin-glass behavior below a freezi…
A spin-glass compound, La$_{1.98}$Sr$_{0.02}$CuO$_4$, shows quasi-three-dimensional magnetic ordering below $\sim$40 K. A remarkable feature is that the magnetic correlation length along the orthorhombic $a\rm_{ortho}$ axis is much longer than that along the $b\rm_{ortho}$ axis, suggesting that the spin structure is closely related to the diagonal stripe structure. The spin-glass state can be expressed as a random freezing of quasi-three-dimensional spin clusters with anisotropic spin correlations ($ξ'_a\sim160$ Å, $ξ'_b\sim25$ Å, and $ξ'_c\sim4.7$ Åat 1.6 K). The new magnetic state is importa…
Spin-freezing is the origin of bad-metal physics and non-Fermi liquid (non-FL) properties in a broad range of correlated compounds. In a multi-orbital lattice system with Hund coupling, doping of the half-filled Mott insulator results in a highly incoherent metal with frozen magnetic moments. These moments fluctuate and collapse in a crossover region that is characterized by unusual non-Fermi liquid properties such as a self-energy whose imaginary part varies $\propto \sqrtω$ over a wide energy range. At low enough temperature, the local moment fluctuations induce electron pairing and this mec…
We investigate the consequences for geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets of weak disorder in the strength of exchange interactions. Taking as a model the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet with nearest neighbour exchange on the pyrochlore lattice, we examine low-temperature behaviour. We show that random exchange generates long-range effective interactions within the extensively degenerate ground states of the clean system. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we find a spin glass transition at a temperature set by the disorder strength. Disorder of this type, which is generated by random str…
The area of research to discover new Li containing materials and to understand their physical properties has been of constant interest due to applications potential for rechargeable batteries. Here, we present the results of magnetic investigations on a Li compound, Li3Ni2RuO6, which was believed to be a ferrimagnet below 80K. While our neutron diffraction (ND) and isothermal magnetization (M) data support ferrimagnetism, more detailed magnetic studies establish that this ferrimagnetic phase exhibits some features similar to spin-glasses. In addition, we find another broad magnetic anomaly aro…
We report on the study of unusual spin glass properties in the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore Tb$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$, $T$$_{g}$$\simeq$24 K. The analysis of the nonlinear part of dc and complex susceptibilities, near the glass transition regime, suggests the existence of a statistical distribution of relaxation times in short-range ordered ferromagnetic clusters. In addition, the magnetic spins are not sufficiently frozen below the glass transition temperature; apparently, responsible for the non-equilibrium scaling behavior of the static critical exponents of nonlinear susceptibilities.…
We have probed the low temperature magnetic behavior of the ordered spin ice material Tb2Sn2O7 through ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of both the pure material and samples with small percentages of Ti substituted on the Sn sublattice. We observe a clear signature for the previously reported ordering transition at TC = 850 mK, as well as evidence for dynamic freezing at temperatures well below TC, confirming the persistence of significant magnetic fluctuations deep in the spin-ordered regime. The long range ordering transition was completely suppressed with as little as 5% Ti for Sn su…
We report measurements of the longitudinal ($^{139}T_1^{-1}$) and transverse ($^{139}T_2^{-1}$) decay rates of the magnetization of $^{139}$La nuclei performed in a high quality single crystal of La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$. We observe a dramatic slowing of the Cu 3d spins manifested as a sharp increase of both $^{139}T_1^{-1}$ and $^{139}T_2^{-1}$ below 30 K. We find that in this temperature range the fluctuations involve a unique time scale $τ$ which diverges as $(T-T_{\rm A})^{-1.9}$ with $T_{\rm A}\thickapprox 5$ K. This behavior is distinct from the continuous freezing obser…
A theory is proposed to describe the competition among antiferromagnetism (AF), spin glass (SG) and Kondo effect. The model describes two Kondo sublattices with an intrasite Kondo interaction strength $J_{K}$ and an interlattice quantum Ising interaction in the presence of a transverse field $Γ$. The interlattice coupling is a random Gaussian distributed variable (with average $-2J_0/N$ and variance $32 J^{2}/N$) while the $Γ$ field is introduced as a quantum mechanism to produce spin flipping. The path integral formalism is used to study this fermionic problem where the spin operators are rep…
The present work studies the Ghatak-Sherrington (GS) model in the presence of a magnetic random field (RF). Previous results obtained from GS model without RF suggest that disorder and frustration are the key ingredients to produce spontaneous inverse freezing (IF). However, in this model, the effects of disorder and frustration always appear combined. In that sense, the introduction of RF allows us to study the IF under the effects of a disorder which is not a source of frustration. The problem is solved within the one step replica symmetry approximation. The results show that the first order…
We report neutron depolarization measurements of the suppression of long-range ferromagnetism and the emergence of magnetic irreversibilities and spin freezing in CePd$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$ around $x^*\approx0.6$. Tracking the temperature versus field history of the neutron depolarization, we find clear signatures of long-range Ising ferromagnetism below a Curie temperature $T_{\rm C}$ for $x=0.4$ and a spin freezing of tiny ferromagnetic clusters below a freezing temperature $T_{\rm F1}$ for $x>x^*$. Under zero-field-cooling/field-heating and for $x>x^*$ a reentrant temperature dependence of the neut…
Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ a disordered pyrochlore system, exhibits the spin ice freezing under the application of magnetic field. Our studies suggest the stabilization of pyrochlore phase in Dy$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ with the substitution of nonmagnetic La, along with the biphasic mixture for the intermediate compositions. We observed that the higher La compositions (1.5 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1.9), show spin freezing (T $\sim$ 17 K) similar to the field induced spin ice freezing for low La compositions (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.5), and the well known spin ice systems Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ho$…
Physical properties of partially Ca substituted hole-doped Dy2Ti2O7 have been investigated by ac magnetic susceptibility χ_ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H) and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements on Dy1.8Ca0.2Ti2O7. The spin-ice system Dy2Ti2O7 exhibits a spin-glass type freezing behavior near 16 K. Our frequency dependent χ_ac(T) data of Dy1.8Ca0.2Ti2O7 show that the spin-freezing behavior is significantly influenced by Ca substitution. The effect of partial nonmagnetic Ca2+ substitution for magnetic Dy3+ is similar to the previous study on nonmagnetic isova…
An increase of the acoustic absorption is found in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x = 0.019, 0.03 and 0.06) close to the temperatures at which freezing of the spin fluctuations in antiferromagnetic-correlated clusters is expected to occur. The acoustic absorption is attributed to changes of the sizes of the quasi-frozen clusters induced by the vibration stress through magnetoelastic coupling.
We report on the unconventional magnetism in the cubic B-site ordered double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, using AC and DC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and muSR. No magnetic order is observed down to 2 K while the Weiss temperature is ~ -160 K. This is ascribed to the geometric frustration in the lattice of edge-sharing tetrahedra with orbitally degenerate Mo5+ s=1/2 spins. Our experimental results point to a gradual freezing of the spins into a disordered pattern of spin-singlets, quenching the orbital degeneracy while leaving the global cubic symmetry unaffected, and providing a rare exampl…
The nickelate Pr4Ni3O8 features quasi-two-dimensional layers consisting of three stacked square-planar NiO2 planes, in a similar way to the well-known cuprate superconductors. The mixed-valent nature of Ni and its metallic properties makes it a candidate for potentially unconventional superconductivity. We have synthesized Pr4Ni3O8 by topotactic reduction of Pr4Ni3O10 in 10 percent hydrogen gas, and report on measurements of powder-neutron diffraction, magnetization and muon-spin rotation (uSR). We find that Pr4Ni3O8 shows complicated spin-glass behavior with a distinct magnetic memory effect …
We report the magnetization study of the compound La$_{0.75}$Ba$_{0.25}$CoO$_3$ where Ba$^{2+}$ doping is just above the critical limit for percolation of ferromagnetic clusters. The field cooled (FC) and zero field cooled (ZFC) magnetization exhibit a thermomagnetic irreversibility and the ac susceptibility show a frequency dependent peak at the ferromagnetic ordering temperature (T$_C$$\approx$203~K) of the clusters. These features indicate about the presence of a non-equilibrium state below T$_C$. In the non-equilibrium state, the dynamic scaling of the imaginary part of ac susceptibility a…
NQR 139La and 63Cu spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) measurements in a La1.94Sr0.06CuO4 single crystal are described. Slowing-down of Cu2+ spin fluctuations is evidenced through a dramatic increase of 139La 1/T_1 on cooling. While the onset of diamagnetism occurs at Tc=8 K, 1/^{139}T_1 has a peak at Tg~5 K, when the characteristic frequency of magnetic fluctuations reaches the NQR frequency nu_Q~19 MHz. In agreement with a number of previous studies, these results show that the so-called "cluster spin-glass" phase persists in the superconducting regime. Issues concerning the coexistence of …
