In the present work it is studied the fermionic van Hemmen model for the spin glass (SG) with a transverse magnetic field $Γ$. In this model, the spin operators are written as a bilinear combination of fermionic operators, which allows the analysis of the interplay between charge and spin fluctuations in the presence of a quantum spin flipping mechanism given by $Γ$. The problem is expressed in the fermionic path integral formalism. As results, magnetic phase diagrams of temperature versus the ferromagnetic interaction are obtained for several values of chemical potential $μ$ and $Γ$. The $Γ$ field suppresses the magnetic orders. The increase of $μ$ alters the average occupation per site that affects the magnetic phases. For instance, the SG and the mixed SG+ferromagnetic phases are also suppressed by $μ$. In addition, $μ$ can change the nature of the phase boundaries introducing a first order transition.
We present here a theoretical model in order to describe the competition between the Kondo effect and the spin glass behavior. The spin glass part of the starting Hamiltonian contains Ising spins with an intersite exchange interaction given by the local van Hemmen model, while the Kondo effect is described as usual by the intrasite exchange $J_K$. We obtain, for large $J_K$ values, a Kondo phase and, for smaller $J_K$ values, a succession, with decreasing
We study the competition between a random potential and a commensurate potential on interacting fermionic and bosonic systems using a variety of methods. We focus on one dimensional interacting fermionic systems but higher dimensional bosonic and fermionic extensions, as well as classical equivalents are also discussed. Our methods which include bosonization, replica variational method, functional renormalization group (RG) and perturbation around the atomic limit, go beyond conventional perturbative expansions around the Luttinger liquid in one dimension. All these methods agree on the predic…
Comment on the paper "Absence of the Mott Glass Phase in 1D Disordered Fermionic Systems" by T. Nattermann, A. Petkovic, Z. Ristivojevic, and F. Schutze, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 186402 (2007).
We report large effects of Parisi replica permutation symmetry breaking (RPSB) on elementary excitations of fermionic systems with frustrated magnetic interactions. The electronic density of states is obtained exactly in the zero temperature limit for (K=1)-step RPSB together with exact relations for arbitrary breaking K, which lead to a new fermionic and dynamical Parisi solution at K=\infty. The Ward identity for charge conservation indicates RPSB-effects on the conductivity in metallic quantum spin glasses. This implies that RPSB is essential for any fermionic system showing spin glass sect…
This article reviews recent progress of the analytical theory of quantum spin glasses (QSG). Exact results for infinite range and one loop renormalisation group calculations for finite range models of either insulating or metallic type are presented. We describe characteristics of fermionic spin glass transitions and of fermionic correlations which are affected by these transitions and by spin glass order. Connections between tricritical thermal-- and $T=0$ QSG transitions are described. A general phase diagram with tricritical QSG transitions caused either by random chemical potential or by e…
We provide evidence for spin glass related magnetic gaps in the fermionic density of states below the freezing temperature. Model calculations are presented and proposed to be relevant for explaining resistivity measurements which observe a crossover from variable-range- to activated behavior. The magnetic field dependence of a hardgap and the low temperature decay of the density of states are given. In models with fermion transport a new metal-insulator transition is predicted to occur due to the spin-glass gap, anteceding the spin glass to quantum paramagnet transition at smaller spin densit…
We investigate the inverse freezing in the fermionic Ising spin-glass (FISG) model in a transverse field $Γ$. The grand canonical potential is calculated in the static approximation, replica symmetry and one-step replica symmetry breaking Parisi scheme. It is argued that the average occupation per site $n$ is strongly affected by $Γ$. As consequence, the boundary phase is modified and, therefore, the reentrance associated with the inverse freezing is modified too.
The fermionic Ising spin glass is analyzed for arbitrary filling and for all temperatures. A selforganized 3-band structure of the model is obtained in the magnetically ordered phase. Deviation from half filling generates a central nonmagnetic band, which becomes sharply separated at T=0 by (pseudo)gaps from upper and lower magnetic bands. Replica symmetry breaking effects are derived for several observables and correlations. They determine the shape of the 3-band DoS, and, for given chemical potential, influence the fermion filling strongly in the low temperature regime.
We present details of the phase diagrams of fermionic systems with random and frustrated interactions, emphasizing the important role of the chemical potential. The insulating fermionic Ising spin glass model is shown to reveal different entangled magnetic instabilities and phase transitions. We review tricritical phenomena related to the strong correspondence between charge and spin fluctuations, being controlled by quantum statistics. We compare the spin density diluted Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass with classical spin 1 models such as the BEG model. We analyse in detail the infinite ra…
We study a fermionic version of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model including nearest-neighbor hopping on a $\infty$-dimensional simple cubic lattices. The problem is reduced to one of free fermions moving in a dynamical effective random medium. By means of a CPA method we derive a set of self-consistency equations for the spin glass order parameter and for the Fourier components of the local spin susceptibility. In order to solve these equations numerically we employ an approximation scheme which restricts the dynamics to a feasible number of the leading Fourier components. From a sequence of s…
The fermionic Ising spin glass models in a transverse field are investigated in a Grassmann path integral formalism. The Parisi's scheme of one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) is used within the static ansatz. This formalism has already been applied in a theory in which $m$ (Parisi's block-size parameter) is taken as a constant (PRB 72, 014447 (2005)). Now, it is extended to consider $m$ as a variational parameter. In this case, the results show that RSB is present when $T\to0$, in which the system is driven by quantum fluctuations.
We show that fermion systems with random interactions lead to strong coupling of glassy order and fermionic correlations, which culminates in the implementation of Parisi replica permutation symmetry breaking (RPSB) in their T=0 quantum field theories. Precursor effects below fermionic AT-lines become stronger as the temperature decreases and play a crucial role within the entire low T regime. The Parisi ultrametric structure is shown to determine low energy excitations and the dynamic behaviour of fermionic correlations for large times, which is predicted to affect transport properties in met…
A new thermodynamic phase resulting from the competition between a commensurate potential and disorder in interacting fermionic or bosonic systems is predicted. It requires interactions of finite extent. This phase, intermediate between the Mott insulator and the Anderson insulator, is both incompressible and has no gap in the conductivity. The corresponding phase is also predicted for commensurate classical elastic systems in presence of correlated disorder.
The competition between spin glass ($SG$) and antiferromagnetic order ($AF$) is analyzed in two sublattice fermionic Ising models in the presence of a transverse $Γ$ and a parallel $H$ magnetic fields. The exchange interaction follows a Gaussian probability distribution with mean $-4J_0/N$ and standard deviation $J\sqrt{32/N}$, but only spins in different sublattices can interact. The problem is formulated in a path integral formalism, where the spin operators have been expressed as bilinear combinations of Grassmann fields. The results of two fermionic models are compared. In the first one, t…
The one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) is used to study a two-sublattice fermionic infinite-range Ising spin glass (SG) model in a transverse field $Γ$. The problem is formulated in a Grassmann path integral formalism within the static approximation. In this model, a parallel magnetic field $H$ breaks the symmetry of the sublattices. It destroys the antiferromagnetic (AF) order, but it can favor the nonergodic mixed phase (SG+AF) characterizing an asymmetric RSB region. In this region, intra-sublattice disordered interactions $V$ increase the difference between the RSB solutions of each …
We study the effects of quenched charge disorder on the phase reconstruction near itinerant ferromagnetic quantum critical points in three spatial dimensions. Combining a replica disorder average with a fermionic version of the quantum order-by-disorder mechanism, we show that weak disorder destabilizes the ferromagnetic state and enhances the susceptibility towards incommensurate, spiral magnetic ordering. The Goldstone modes of the spiral phase are governed by a 3d-XY model. The induced disorder in the pitch of the spiral generates a random anisotropy for the Goldstone modes, inducing vortex…
A theory is proposed to describe the competition among antiferromagnetism (AF), spin glass (SG) and Kondo effect. The model describes two Kondo sublattices with an intrasite Kondo interaction strength $J_{K}$ and a random Gaussian interlattice interaction in the presence of a transverse field $Γ$. The $Γ$ field is introduced as a quantum mechanism to produce spin flipping and the random coupling has average $-2J_0/N$ and variance $32 J^{2}/N$. The path integral formalism with Grassmann fields is used to study this fermionic problem, in which the disorder is treated within the framework of the …
We study models of itinerant spinless fermions with random long-range interactions. We motivate such models from descriptions of fermionic atoms in multi-mode optical cavities. The solution of an infinite-range model yields a metallic phase which has glassy charge dynamics, and a localized glass phase with suppressed density of states at low energies. We compare these phases to the conventional disordered Fermi liquid, and the insulating electron glass of semiconductors. Prospects for the realization of such glassy phases in cold atom systems are discussed.
Helium films show various quantum phases that undergo quantum phase transitions by changing coverage n. We found anomalous elastic phenomena in bosonic 4He and fermionic 3He films adsorbed on a glass substrate. The films stiffen under AC strain at low temperature with an excess dissipation. The onset temperature of the stiffening decreases to 0 K as n approaches a critical coverage nc. The elastic anomaly is explained by thermal activation of helium atoms from the localized to extended states with a distributed energy gap. We determine for the first time the energy band structure of helium fil…
We report progress in understanding the fermionic Ising spin glass with arbitrary filling. A crossover from a magnetically disordered single band phase via two intermediate bands just below the freezing temperature to a 3-band structure at still lower temperatures - beyond an almost random field instability - is shown to emerge in the magnetic phase. An attempt is made to explain the exact solution in terms of a quantum Parisi phase. A central nonmagnetic band is found and seen to become sharply separated at T=0 by gaps from upper and lower magnetic bands. The gap sizes tend towards zero as th…

A theory is proposed to describe the competition among antiferromagnetism (AF), spin glass (SG) and Kondo effect. The model describes two Kondo sublattices with an intrasite Kondo interaction strength $J_{K}$ and an interlattice quantum Ising interaction in the presence of a transverse field $Γ$. The interlattice coupling is a random Gaussian distributed variable (with average $-2J_0/N$ and variance $32 J^{2}/N$) while the $Γ$ field is introduced as a quantum mechanism to produce spin flipping. The path integral formalism is used to study this fermionic problem where the spin operators are rep…
The competition among spin glass (SG), antiferromagnetism (AF) and local pairing superconductivity (PAIR) is studied in a two-sublattice fermionic Ising spin glass model with a local BCS pairing interaction in the presence of an applied magnetic transverse field $Γ$. In the present approach, spins in different sublattices interact with a Gaussian random coupling with an antiferromagnetic mean $J_0$ and standard deviation $J$. The problem is formulated in the path integral formalism in which spin operators are represented by bilinear combinations of Grassmann variables. The saddle-point Grand C…
We study quantum SU($M$) spins with all-to-all and random Heisenberg exchange interactions of root-mean-square strength $J$. The $M \rightarrow \infty$ model has a spin liquid ground state with the spinons obeying the equations of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Numerical studies of the SU(2) model with $S=1/2$ spins show spin glass order in the ground state, but also display SYK spin liquid behavior in the intermediate frequency spin spectrum. We employ a $1/M$ expansion to describe the crossover from fractionalized fermionic spinons to a confining spin glass state with weak spin glass ord…

Ground states of local Hamiltonians are known to obey the entanglement entropy area law. While area law violation of a mild kind (logarithmic) is commonly encountered, strong area-law violation (more than logarithmic) is rare. In this paper, we study the long range quantum spin glass in one dimension whose couplings are disordered and fall off with distance as a power-law. We show that this system exhibits more than logarithmic area law violation in its ground state. Strikingly this feature is found to be true even in the short range regime in sharp contrast to the spinless long range disorder…
