Spin glasses are systems whose magnetic moments freeze at low temperature into random orientations without long-range order. It is generally accepted that both frustration and disorder are essential ingredients in all spin glasses, so it was surprising that PrAu2Si2, a stoichiometric compound with a well-ordered crystal structure, was reported to exhibit spin glass freezing. In this article, we report on inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the crystal field excitations, which show that PrAu2Si2 has a singlet ground state and that the exchange coupling is very close to the critical value to induce magnetic order. We propose that spin glass freezing results from dynamic fluctuations of the crystal field levels that destabilize the induced moments and frustrate the development of long-range magnetic correlations. This novel mechanism for producing a frustrated ground state could provide a method of testing the concept of `avoided criticality' in glassy systems.
We report investigations on the ground state magnetic properties of intermetallic compound GdCu through dc magnetization measurements. GdCu undergoes first order martensitic type structural transition over a wide temperature window of coexisting phases. The high temperature cubic and the low temperature orthorhombic phases have different magnetic character and they show antiferromagnetic and helimagnetic orderings below 145 K and 45 K respectively. We observe clear signature of a glassy magnetic phase below the helimagnetic ordering temperature, which is marked by thermomagnetic irreversibilit…
To get insight into the nature of the electronic fluid in the frustration-driven charge glasses, we investigate in-plane and out-of-plane charge transport for several quasi-triangular-lattice organic systems, $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X [X=RbZn(SCN)$_4$, CsZn(SCN)$_4$ and I$_3$]. These compounds host a charge order, charge glass and Fermi liquid, depending on the strength of charge frustration. We find that the resistivity exhibits extremely two-dimensional (2D) anisotropy and contrasting temperature dependence between in the in-plane and out-of-plane directions in the charge glass phase, qualitativel…
With large spin-orbit coupling, the $t_{2g}^5$ electron configuration in $d$-metal oxides is prone to highly anisotropic exchange interactions and exotic magnetic properties. In $5d^5$ iridates, given the existing variety of crystal structures, the magnetic anisotropy can be tuned from antisymmetric to symmetric Kitaev-type, with interaction strengths that outsize the isotropic terms. By many-body electronic-structure calculations we here address the nature of the magnetic exchange and the intriguing spin-glass behavior of Li$_2$RhO$_3$, a $4d^5$ honeycomb oxide. For pristine crystals without …
To search for novel spin-charge coupled phenomena in the strongly correlated electron system on a frustration lattice, charge transport and dynamics have been investigated for the hole-doped spin-glass (Mott) insulator (Y$_{1-x}$Cd$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$ with pyrochlore structure. Coincident with the disappearance of spin-glass state by hole doping, a diffusive metallic transport with strongly renormalized electron mass shows up with no long range spin order, which is caused by strong antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation due to the geometrical frustration.
We investigated the nature of the freezing in the geometrically frustrated Heisenberg spin-glass Y2Mo2O7 by measuring the temperature dependence of the static internal magnetic field distribution above the spin-glass temperature, Tg, using the muSR technique. The evolution of the field distribution cannot be explained by changes in the spin susceptibility alone and suggests a lattice deformation. This possibility is addressed by numerical simulations of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian with magneto-elastic coupling at T>0.
We study RKKY interaction in non-Fermi liquid metals. We find that the RKKY interaction mediated by non-Fermi liquid metals can be of much longer range than for a Fermi liquid. The oscillatory nature of RKKY interaction thus becomes more important in non-Fermi liquids, and gives rise to enhanced frustration when the spins form a lattice. Frustration suppresses the magnetic ordering temperature of the lattice spin system. Furthermore, we find that the spin system with longer range RKKY interaction can be described by the Brazovskii model, where the ordering wavevector lies on a shell with const…
We study the magnetic properties of CaFeTi$_2$O$_6$ (CFTO) by high-field magnetization and specific heat measurements. While the magnetic susceptibility data yield a vanishingly small Curie-Weiss temperature, the magnetic moments are not fully polarized in magnetic field up to 60 T, which reveals a large spin exchange energy scale. Yet, the system shows no long range magnetic order but a spin-glass-like state below 5.5 K in zero field, indicating strong magnetic frustration in this system. Applying magnetic field gradually suppresses the spin-glass-like state and gives rise to a potential quan…
We consider interacting electrons in a two-dimensional quantum Coulomb glass and investigate by means of the Hartree-Fock approximation the combined effects of the electron-electron interaction and the transverse magnetic field on fluctuations of the inverse compressibility. Preceding systematic study of the system in the absence of the magnetic field identifies the source of the fluctuations, interplay of disorder and interaction, and effects of hopping. Revealed in sufficiently clean samples with strong interactions is an unusual right-biased distribution of the inverse compressibility, whic…
The physics underlying the complex glassy phenomena, which accompany the formation of polarons in optimally doped manganites (ODM) is a cumbersome issue with many unexplained aspects. In this article we present $^{139}$La and $^{55}$Mn NMR in the temperature range 80K - 900K of ODM La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$. We show that local lattice distortions, established in the Paramagnetic (PM) phase for $T<700$K, induce a genuine spin-glass state, which for $T<T_c$ consolidates with the Ferromagnetic (FM) state into a single thermodynamic phase. Comparative NMR experiments on La$_{0.77}$Ca$_{0.23}$M…
Electronic and magnetic properties of molybdenum pyrochlores A2Mo2O7 are studied by the fully relativistic density-functional theory plus on-site repulsion (U) method, with focusing on the spin-glass insulating material Y2Mo2O7. We find that the system exhibits peculiar competition in energy between different magnetic states in the large-U insulating region. The magnetic competition cannot be explained by the conventional picture based on the geometrical frustration of isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. Through an analysis by using a generalized spin model, we find t…
The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg ladder in the presence of frustration and an external magnetic field is a system that is characterized by two sorts of quantum criticalities, not only one. One criticality is the consequence of intrinsic frustration, and the other one is a result of the external magnetic field. So the behaviour of each of them in the presence of the other deserves to be studied. Using the Jordan-Wigner transformation in dimensions higher than one and bond-mean-field theory we examine the interplay between the field-induced and frustration-induced quantum criticalities i…
Glass, a ubiquitous state of matter like a frozen liquid, is a seminal issue across fundamental and applied sciences and has long been investigated in the framework of classical mechanics. A challenge in glass physics is the exploration of the quantum-mechanical behaviour of glass. Experimentally, however, the real quantum manifestation of glass and the relationship between classical and quantum glass are totally unknown and remain to be observed in real systems. Here, we report the direct observation of classical-to-quantum evolution in the frustration-induced charge glass state exhibited by …
Magnetic frustration, which is well-defined in insulating systems with localized magnetic moments, yields exotic ground states like spin ices, spin glasses, or spin liquids. In metals magnetic frustration is less well defined because of the incipient delocalization of magnetic moments by the interaction with conduction electrons, viz., the Kondo effect. Hence, the Kondo effect and magnetic frustration are antithetic phenomena. Here we present experimental data of electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat and neutron diffraction on CePdAl, which is one of the rare examples of a geome…
Using the example of Zn-doped La2CuO4, we demonstrate that a spinless impurity doped into a non-frustrated antiferromagnet can induce substantial frustrating interactions among the spins surrounding it. This counterintuitive result is the key to resolving discrepancies between experimental data and earlier theories. Analytic and quantum Monte Carlo studies of the impurity-induced frustration are in a close accord with each other and experiments. The mechanism proposed here should be common to other correlated oxides as well.
Localized spins and itinerant electrons rarely coexist in geometrically-frustrated spinel lattices. We show that the spinel CoV2O4 stands at the crossover from insulating to itinerant behavior and exhibits a complex interplay between localized spins and itinerant electrons. In contrast to the expected paramagnetism, localized spins supported by enhanced exchange couplings are frustrated by the effects of delocalized electrons. This frustration produces a non-collinear spin state and may be responsible for macroscopic spin-glass behavior. Competing phases can be uncovered by external perturbati…
We show strong numerical evidence in favor of an unexpected virtually gapless spectrum, with edge states localized at the boundaries, in frustrated spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic ladders with an odd number of legs. These features can be accurately reproduced by using a projected BCS wave function with a non-trivial pairing, that mixes even and odd reflection symmetries. This approach gives the correct classification of the excitations and provides a simple and very appealing picture of an unconventional spin-liquid phase stabilized by frustration.
We present a combined study of thermal expansion and resistance fluctuation spectroscopy measurements exploring the static and dynamic aspects of the charge-glass formation in the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$$MM^\prime$(SCN)$_4$ with $M$ = Cs and $M^\prime$ = Co,Zn. In these materials, the emergence of a novel charge-glass state so far has been interpreted in purely electronic terms by considering the strong frustration of the Coulomb interactions on a triangular lattice. Contrary to this view, we provide comprehensive evidence for the involvement of a \textit{st…
We demonstrate via a muon spin rotation experiment that the electronic ground state of the iridium spinel compound, CuIr$_2$S$_4$, is not the presumed spin-singlet state but a novel paramagnetic state, showing a quasistatic spin glass-like magnetism below ~100 K. Considering the earlier indication that IrS$_6$ octahedra exhibit dimerization associated with the metal-to-insulator transition below 230 K, the present result suggests that a strong spin-orbit interaction may be playing an important role in determining the ground state that accompanies magnetic frustration.
We show that the introduction of frustration into the spin-1/2 two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a square lattice via a next-nearest neighbor exchange interaction can lead to a Peierls-like transition, from a tetragonal to an orthorhombic phase, when the spins are coupled to adiabatic phonons. The two different orthorhombic ground states define an Ising order parameter, which is expected to lead to a finite temperature transition. Implications for ${\rm Li_2VOSiO_4}$, the first realization of that model, will be discussed.
We investigate quantum phase transitions in the frustrated orthogonal-dimer chain with an arbitrary spin $S \geq 1/2$. When the ratio of the competing exchange couplings is varied, first-order phase transitions occur 2S times among distinct spin-gap phases. The introduction of single-ion anisotropy further enriches the phase diagram. The phase transitions described by the present model possess most of the essential properties inherent in frustrated quantum spin systems.
We propose a two-stage spin quenching scenario for the unusual heavy fermion state realized in the mixed valent metal LiV$_2$O$_4$. In this theory, local valence fluctuations are responsible for the formation of partially quenched, spin 1/2 moments below room temperature. Frustration of the intersite spin couplings then drives the system to produce the heavy Fermi liquid seen at low temperatures. The anomalous resistivity and the sign change of the Hall constant can be understood naturally within this model, which also predicts a unique symmetry for the heavy quasiparticle bands that may be ob…
We study the double-exchange model at half-filling with competing superexchange interactions on a triangular lattice, combining exact diagonalization and Monte-Carlo methods. We find that in between the expected itinerant ferromagnetic and $120^{\circ}$ Yafet-Kittel phases a robust scalar-chiral, insulating spin state emerges. At finite temperatures the ferromagnet - scalar-chiral quantum critical point is characterized by anomalous bad-metal behavior in charge transport as observed in frustrated itinerant magnets R$_2$Mo$_{2}$O$_7$.
We report on the muon spin rotation/relaxation study of a pyrochlore oxide, Cd2Os2O7, which exhibits a metal-insulator (MI) transition at T_{MI}~225 K without structural phase transition. It reveals strong spin fluctuation (>10^8/s) below the MI transition, suggesting a predominant role of geometrical spin frustration amongst Os^{5+} ions. Meanwhile, upon further cooling, a static spin density wave discontinuously develops below T_{SDW}~150 K. These observations strongly suggest the occurrence of an anomalous magnetic transition and associated change in the local spin dynamics in undistorted p…
We study the low-energy properties of the geometrically frustrated Hubbard model on a three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice and a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice on the basis of the renormalization group method and mean field analysis. It is found that in the half-filling case, a (semi-)metal to insulator transition (MIT) occurs. Also, in the insulating phase, which has a spin gap, the spin rotational symmetry is not broken, while charge ordering exists. The results are applied to the description of the MIT observed in the pyrochlore system ${\rm Tl_2Ru_2O_7}$.
We investigate the properties of an effective Hamiltonian with competing interactions involving spin and chirality variables, relevant for the description of the {\it trimerized} version of the spin-1/2 {\it kagome} antiferromagnet. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations, we show that remarkable behaviors develop at very low temperatures. Through an {\it order by disorder} mechanism, the low-energy states are characterized by a dynamical freezing of the chiralities, which decouples the lattice into ``dimers'' and ``triangles'' of antiferromagnetically coupled spins. Under the presence of an e…
We have characterized the magnetic and structural properties of the CdLn2Se4 (Ln = Dy, Ho), and CdLn2S4 (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) spinels. We observe all compounds to be normal spinels, possessing a geometrically frustrated sublattice of lanthanide atoms with no observable structural disorder. Fits to the high temperature magnetic susceptibilities indicate these materials to have effective antiferromagnetic interactions, with Curie-Weiss temperatures theta ~ -10 K, except CdYb2S4 for which theta ~ -40 K. The absence of magnetic long range order or glassiness above T = 1.8 K strongly suggests that …
Lattice effects on photo-excited states in interacting charge frustrated system are examined. Real time dynamics in the interacting spinless fermion model on a triangular lattice coupled to lattice vibration are analyzed by applying the exact diagonalization method combined with the classical equation of motion. A photo-induced phase transition from the horizontal stripe-type charge order (CO) to the 3-fold CO occurs through a characteristic intermediate time domain. By analyzing the time evolution in detail, we find that this characteristic dynamics are seen when the electron and lattice sect…
The $1/4$-filled organic compound, $δ$-(EDT-TTF-CONMe$_{2}$)$_{2}$AsF$_6$ is a frustrated two-dimensional triangular magnetic system as shown by high-frequency (111.2 and 222.4 GHz) electron spin resonance (ESR) and structural data in the literature. The material gradually orders antiferromagnetically below 40~K but some magnetically disordered domains persist down to 4 K. We propose that in defect free regions frustration prevents true magnetic order down to at least 4 K in spite of the large first- and second-neighbor exchange interactions along chains and between chains, respectively. The a…
Experimental and theoretical studies are performed on La3Ir3O11, an iridate hosting a +4.33 fractional valence state for Ir ions and a three-dimensional frustrated structure composed of edge-shared Ir2O10 dimers. These features are expected to enhance inter-site hoppings and reduce magnetic moments of Ir ions. However, a spin-orbit driven Mott insulating transport is observed, which is supported by our first principles calculations. Most importantly, geometrical frustration and competing interactions result in a non-Curie-Weiss paramagnetic ground state, revealing no magnetic order down to 2 K…
The title compound Ba3RuTi2O9 crystallizes with a hexagonal unit cell. It contains layers of edge shared triangular network of Ru4+ (S=1) ions. Magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and heat capacity data show no long range magnetic ordering down to 1.8K. A Curie-Weiss (CW) fitting of chi(T) yields a large antiferromagnetic CW temperature theta_CW=-166K. However, in low field, a splitting of zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) chi(T) is observed below ~30K. Our measurements suggest that Ba3RuTi2O9 is a highly frustrated system but only a small fraction of the spins in this system undergo a …
We provide a physically meaningful picture of the nature of the ground state of the Cr8Ni compound in the regime where it is a spin singlet. According to this picture, the anisotropy of the $Ni$ atom in the $Cr$ ring induces a dimerization in the molecule that makes the ground state to stabilize in a Valence Bond Solid phase of virtual spins. We characterize rigorously this phase by means of a particular non-local order parameter denoted the generalized string order parameter. In the completely antiferromagnetic regime, the system becomes frustrated. We have performed a numerical real-time evo…
Single-particle dynamics in the 120$^{\circ}$ ordered antiferromagnetic state of the triangular-lattice Hubbard model is studied using a physically transparent fluctuation approach in terms of multiple magnon emission and absorption processes within the noncrossing approximation. Hole and electron spectral features are evaluated at intermediate $U$, and analyzed in terms of a competition between the frustration-induced direct hopping and the virtual hopping terms. Finite $U$-induced competing interactions and frustration effects contributing through the magnon dispersion are also discussed. Fi…
The crystal structure and the magnetism of BaMn$_2$O$_3$ have been studied by thermodynamic and by diffraction techniques using large single crystals and powders. BaMn$_2$O$_3$ is a realization of a $S = 5/2$ spin ladder as the magnetic interaction is dominant along 180$^\circ$ Mn-O-Mn bonds forming the legs and the rungs of a ladder. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility exhibits well-defined maxima for all directions proving the low-dimensional magnetic character in BaMn$_2$O$_3$. The susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction data, however, show that BaMn$_2$O$_3$ exh…
Geometric frustration of interacting spin systems is the driving force of a variety of fascinating phenomena in low-dimensional magnetism. In this contribution I will review recent results on frustration-induced effects in magnetic molecules, i.e. zero-dimensional magnetic systems, as well as in a recently synthesized frustrated molecule-based spin tube, i.e. a one-dimensional spin system.
A mixed Heisenberg spin chain with frustrated side chains is investigated by numerical and perturbational calculations. A frustration-induced quantum partially polarized ferrimagnetic phase and a nonmagnetic spin quadrupolar phase are found adjacent to the conventional Lieb-Mattis type ferrimagnetic phase or the nonmagnetic singlet cluster solid phases. The partially polarized ferrimagnetic phase has an incommensurate spin structure. Similar structures are commonly found in other frustration-induced partially polarized ferrimagnetic phases. Numerical results also suggest a series of almost cri…
The comparative study of the substitution of zinc and lithium for iron in the "114" ferrites, YBaFe4O7 and CaBaFe4O7, shows that these diamagnetic cations play a major role in tuning the competition between ferrimagnetism and magnetic frustration in these oxides. The substitution of Li or Zn for Fe in the cubic phase YBaFe4O7 leads to a structural transition to a hexagonal phase YBaFe4-xMxO7, for M = Li (0.30 < x < 0.75) and for M = Zn (0.40 < x < 1.50). It is seen that for low doping values i.e. x = 0.30 (for Li) and x = 0.40 (for Zn), these diamagnetic cations induce a strong ferrimagnetic c…
We study the frustration-induced enhancement of the incommensurate correlation for a bond-alternating quantum spin chain in a magnetic field, which is associated with a quasi-one-dimensional organic compound F5PNN. We investigate the temperature dependence of the staggered susceptibilities by using the density matrix renormalization group, and then find that the incommensurate correlation becomes dominant in a certain range of the magnetic field. We also discuss the mechanism of this enhancement on the basis of the mapping to the effective S=1/2 XXZ chain and a possibility of the field-induced…
Motivated by the rich interplay among electronic correlation, spin-orbit coupling (SOC), crystal-field splitting, and geometric frustrations in the honeycomb-like lattice, we systematically investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of Li$_2$RhO$_3$. The material is semiconducting with a narrow band gap of $Δ\sim$78 meV, and its temperature dependence of resistivity conforms to 3D variable range hopping mechanism. No long-range magnetic ordering was found down to 0.5 K, due to the geometric frustrations. Instead, single atomic spin-glass behavior below the spin-freezing temperature ($…
We show that a new glassy phase can emerge in presence of strong magnetic frustration and quantum fluctuations. It is a Valence Bond Glass. We study its properties solving the Hubbard-Heisenberg model on a Bethe lattice within the large $N$ limit introduced by Affleck and Marston. We work out the phase diagram that contains Fermi liquid, dimer and valence bond glass phases. This new glassy phase has no electronic or spin gap (although a pseudo-gap is observed), it is characterized by long-range critical valence bond correlations and is not related to any magnetic ordering. As a consequence it …
121/123Sb nuclear quadrupole resonance and muon spin relaxation experiments of Mo3Sb7 revealed symmetry breakdown to a nonmagnetic state below the transition recently found at TS=50 K. The transition is characterized by a distinct lattice dynamics suggested from narrowing of nuclear fields. We point out that the Mo sublatice is a unique three-dimensional frustrated lattice where nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions compete, and propose that tetragonal distortion to release the frustration stabilizes long-range order of spin-singlet dimers, i.e., valence bon…
Using detailed synchrotron diffraction, magnetization, thermodynamic and transport measurements, we investigate the relationship between the mixed valence of Ir, lattice strain and the resultant structural and magnetic ground states in the geometrically frustrated triple perovskite iridate Ba$_{3}$NaIr$_{2}$O$_{9}$. We observe a complex interplay between lattice strain and structural phase co-existence, which is in sharp contrast to what is typically observed in this family of compounds. The low temperature magnetic ground state is characterized by the absence of long range order, and points t…
Zero-field muon spin rotation and magnetization measurements were performed in La2Cu{1-x}MxO4, for 0<x< 0.12, where Cu2+ is replaced either by M=Zn2+ or by M=Mg2+ spinless impurity. It is shown that while the doping dependence of the sublattice magnetization (M(x)) is nearly the same for both compounds, the Néel temperature (T_N(x)) decreases unambiguously more rapidly in the Zn-doped compound. This difference, not taken into account within a simple dilution model, is associated with the frustration induced by the Zn2+ impurity onto the Cu2+ antiferromagnetic lattice. In fact, from T_N(x) and …
By using a state of art tensor network state method, we study the ground-state phase diagram of an extended Bose-Hubbard model on the square lattice with frustrated next-nearest neighboring tunneling. In the hardcore limit, tunneling frustration stabilizes a peculiar half supersolid (HSS) phase with one sublattice being superfluid and the other sublattice being Mott Insulator away from half filling. In the softcore case, the model shows very rich phase diagrams above half filling, including three different types of supersolid phases depending on the interaction parameters. The considered model…
We provide evidence of a superfluid-insulator transition (SIT) of magnons in a quasi-one-dimensional quantum ferrimagnet with {\it isotropic} competing antiferromagnetic spin interactions. This SIT occurs between two distinct ferrimagnetic phases due to the frustration-induced closing of the gap to a magnon excitation. It thus causes a coherent superposition of singlet and triplet states at lattice unit cells and a power-law decay on the staggered spin correlation function along the transverse direction to the spontaneous magnetization. A hard-core boson map suggests that asymptotically close …
Vanadium atoms in layered LiVO2 form in-plane periodic vanadium trimers at low temperatures, but the trimers appear randomly in the stacking direction because there are many trimer configurations with comparable lattice energy. We detailed an original modeling scheme to represent glassy states with a completely disordered trimer configuration in the stacking structure. Through PDF analysis using this model, we show that the synthesis method can yield two types of low-temperature stacking structures: a completely disordered stacking structure and a short-range order in the stacking structure. T…
Hour-glass-shaped magnetic excitation spectra have been detected in a variety of doped transition-metal oxides with stripe-like charge order. Compared to the predictions of spin-wave theory, these spectra display a different intensity distribution and anomalous broadening. Here we show, based on a comprehensive modelling of these phenomena for La5/3Sr1/3CoO4, how quenched disorder in the charge sector causes frustration, and consequently cluster-glass behavior at low temperatures, in the spin sector. This spin-glass physics, which is insensitive to the detailed nature of the charge disorder, b…
We propose utilizing the Cooper pair to induce magnetic frustration in systems of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic adatom lattices on s-wave superconducting surfaces. The competition between singlet electron correlations and the RKKY coupling is shown to lead to a variety of hidden order states that break the point-group symmetry of the 2D adatom lattice at finite temperature. The phase diagram is constructed using a newly developed effective bond theory [M. Schecter et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 157202 (2017)], and exhibits broad regions of long-range vestigial nematic order.
We study magnetic order induced by non-magnetic impurities in quantum paramagnets with incommensurate host spin correlations. In contrast to the well-studied commensurate case where the defect-induced magnetism is spatially disordered but non-frustrated, the present problem combines strong disorder with frustration and, consequently, leads to spin-glass order. We discuss the crossover from strong randomness in the dilute limit to more conventional glass behavior at larger doping, and numerically characterize the robust short-range order inherent to the spin-glass phase. We relate our findings …
We study ground-state properties of the Heisenberg frustrated spin chain with interactions up to fourth nearest neighbors by the exact-diagonalization method and the density matrix renormalization group method. We find that ferrimagnetism is realized not only in the case of S=1/2 but also S=1 despite that there is only a single spin site in each unit cell determined from the shape of the Hamiltonian. Our numerical results suggest that a "multi-sublattice structure" is not required for the occurrence of ferrimagnetism in quantum spin systems with isotropic interactions.
We investigated the electronic structure of layered Mn oxide Bi3Mn4O12(NO3) with a Mn honeycomb lattice by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The valence of Mn was determined to be 4+ with a small charge-transfer energy. We estimated the values of superexchange interactions up to the fourth nearest neighbors (J1, J2, J3, and J4) by unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations and a perturbation method. We found that the absolute values of J1 through J4 are similar with positive (antiferromagnetic) J1 and J4, and negative (ferromagnetic) J2 and J3, due to Mn-O-O-Mn pathways activated by the smallness of …
Complex lattices provide a versatile ground for fascinating quantum many-body physics. Here, we propose an exotic mechanics for generating orbital frustration in hexagonal lattices. We study two-component (pseudospin-$1/2$) Bose gases in $p$-orbital bands of two-dimensional hexagonal lattices, and find that the system exhibits previously untouched orbital frustration as a result of the interplay of spin and orbital degrees of freedom, in contrast to normal Ising-type orbital ordering of spinless $p$-orbital band bosons in two-dimensional hexagonal lattices. Based on the classification by symme…
Neutron scattering measurements on a bilayer manganite near optimal doping show that the short-range polarons correlations are completely dynamic at high T, but then freeze upon cooling to a temperature T* 310 K. This glass transition suggests that the paramagnetic/insulating state arises from an inherent orbital frustration that inhibits the formation of a long range orbital- and charge-ordered state. Upon further cooling into the ferromagnetic-metallic state (Tc=114 K), where the polarons melt, the diffuse scattering quickly develops into a propagating, transverse optic phonon.
We investigate a phenomenological model for the spin glass phase of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, in which it is assumed that holes doped into the CuO_2 planes localize near their Sr dopant, where they cause a dipolar frustration of the antiferromagnetic environment. In absence of long-range antiferromagnetic order, the spin system can reduce frustration, and also its free energy, by forming a state with an ordered orientation of the dipole moments, which leads to the appearance of spiral spin correlations. To investigate this model, a non-linear sigma model is used in which disorder is introduced via a …
In quantum many-body systems with local interactions, the effects of boundary conditions are considered to be negligible, at least for sufficiently large systems. Here we show an example of the opposite. We consider a spin chain with two competing interactions, set on a ring with an odd number of sites. When only the dominant interaction is antiferromagnetic, and thus induces topological frustration, the standard antiferromagnetic order (expressed by the magnetization) is destroyed. When also the second interaction turns from ferro to antiferro, an antiferromagnetic order characterized by a si…
