To get insight into the nature of the electronic fluid in the frustration-driven charge glasses, we investigate in-plane and out-of-plane charge transport for several quasi-triangular-lattice organic systems, $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X [X=RbZn(SCN)$_4$, CsZn(SCN)$_4$ and I$_3$]. These compounds host a charge order, charge glass and Fermi liquid, depending on the strength of charge frustration. We find that the resistivity exhibits extremely two-dimensional (2D) anisotropy and contrasting temperature dependence between in the in-plane and out-of-plane directions in the charge glass phase, qualitatively distinguished from the charge order and metallic states. The experimental features indicate that the frustration-induced charge glass carries an anomalous 2D-confined electronic fluid with possible charge excitations other than conventional quasiparticles.
We show how the coupling between the phonons and electrons in a strongly correlated metal can result in phonon frequencies which have a non-monotonic temperature dependence. Dynamical mean-field theory is used to study the Hubbard-Holstein model that describes the κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2 X family of superconducting molecular crystals. The crossover with increasing temperature from a Fermi liquid to a bad metal produces phonon anomalies that are consistent with recent Raman scattering and acoustic experiments.
The phase diagram of the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$Cl has been investigated by ultrasonic velocity measurements under helium gas pressure. Different phase transitions were identified trough several elastic anomalies characterized from isobaric and isothermal sweeps. Our data reveal two crossover lines that end on the critical point terminating the first-order Mott transition line. When the critical point is approached along these lines, we observe a dramatic softening of the velocity which is consistent with a diverging compressibility of the electronic degrees of fr…
The apparently counterintuitive carrier concentration-dependent electronic properties of layered cobaltates have attracted wide interest. Here we point out that very similar carrier-concentration dependence has previously been noted in strongly correlated quasi-one dimensional (quasi-1D) organic charge-transfer solids. The normal states of both families can be understood, over the entire range of carrier concentration of interest, within the extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with significant intersite Coulomb interaction. As with the charge-transfer solids, superconductivity in the cobaltates appea…
Geometrically frustrated spin systems often do not exhibit long-range ordering, resulting in either quantum-mechanically disordered states, such as quantum spin liquids, or classically disordered states, such as spin ices or spin glasses. Geometric frustration may play a similar role in charge ordering, potentially leading to unconventional electronic states without long-range order; however, there are no previous experimental demonstrations of this phenomenon. Here, we show that a charge-cluster glass evolves upon cooling in the absence of long-range charge ordering for an organic conductor w…
The synthetic organic compound lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 undergoes successive transitions from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a metal and then to a superconductor as a magnetic field is increased. We use a Hubbard-Kondo model to clarify the role of the Fe(3+) magnetic ions in these phase transitions. In the high-field regime, the magnetic field acting on the electron spins is compensated by the exchange field He due to the magnetic ions. This suggests that the field-induced superconducting state is the same as the zero-field superconducting state which occurs under pressure or when the Fe(3+) ion…
We present magnetoresistance studies of the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor $κ$-(BETS)$_2$Mn[N(CN)$_2$]$_3$, where BETS stands for bis\-(ethylene\-dithio)\-tetra\-selena\-fulvalene. Under a moderate pressure of 1.4\,kbar, required for stabilizing the metallic ground state, Shubnikov - de Haas oscillations, associated with a classical and a magnetic-breakdown cyclotron orbits on the cylindrical Fermi surface, have been found at fields above 10\,T. The effective cyclotron masses evaluated from the temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitudes reveal strong renormalization due to m…
In the organic charge transfer salt k-(BETS)2Mn[N(CN)2]3 the metallic conductivity is provided by itinerant pi-electrons in the layers of BETS molecules, whereas magnetization is largely dominated by the localized d-electrons of the Mn2+ ions in the insulating anionic layers. We study magnetic properties of the compound in its low-temperature, Mott-insulating state by means of magnetic torque technique. The complex behavior of the torque can be qualitatively explained by the coexistence of two weakly interacting magnetic subsystems associated with paramagnetic d-electron spins and antiferromag…
We present a theory which is able to explain enhanced magnetic quantum-oscillation amplitudes in the superconducting state of a layered metal with incoherent electronic transport across the layers. The incoherence acts through the deformation of the layer-stacking factor which becomes complex and decreases the total scattering rate in the mixed state. This novel mechanism can compensate the usual decrease of the Dingle factor below the upper critical magnetic field caused by the intralayer scattering.
The critical cooling rate $R_{\rm c}$ above which charge ordering is kinetically avoided upon cooling, which results in charge-glass formation, was investigated for the geometrically frustrated system $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$. X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$TlCo(SCN)$_4$ exhibits a horizontally charge-ordered state, and kinetic avoidance of this state requires rapid cooling of faster than 150 K/min. This value is markedly higher than that reported for two other isostructural $θ$-type compounds, thus demonstrating the lower charge-glass-forming ability of $X$ $=$ TlCo(…
We present an analysis of previously published measurements of the London penetration depth of layered organic superconductors. The predictions of the BCS theory of superconductivity are shown to disagree with the measured zero temperature, in plane, London penetration depth by up to two orders of magnitude. We find that fluctuations in the phase of the superconducting order parameter do not determine the superconducting critical temperature as the critical temperature predicted for a Kosterlitz--Thouless transition is more than an order of magnitude greater than is found experimentally for so…
We present a systematic investigation of the low-frequency charge carrier dynamics in different charge states of the organic conductors $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$$M$Zn(SCN)$_4$ with $M$=Rb,Tl, which result from quenching or relaxing the charge degrees of freedom on a geometrically frustrated triangular lattice. Due to strong electronic correlations these materials exhibit a charge-ordering transition, which can be kinetically avoided by rapid cooling resulting in a so-called charge-glass state without long-range order. The combination of fluctuation spectroscopy and a heat pulse method allows us to st…
We study the Mott transition, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in layered organic conductors using Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory for the frustrated Hubbard model. A d-wave superconducting phase appears between an antiferromagnetic insulator and a metal for $t^{\prime}/t=0.3-0.7 $, or between a nonmagnetic Mott insulator (spin liquid) and a metal for $t^{\prime}/t\geq 0.8$, in agreement with experiments on layered organic conductors including $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$. These phases are separated by a strong first order transition. The phase diagram gives much insight into …
The thermal conductivity of polycrystalline samples of (Na,Ca)Co_2O_4 is found to be unusually low, 20 mW/cmK at 280 K. On the assumption of the Wiedemann-Franz law, the lattice thermal conductivity is estimated to be 18 mW/cmK at 280 K, and it does not change appreciably with the substitution of Ca for Na. A quantitative analysis has revealed that the phonon mean free path is comparable with the lattice parameters, where the point-defect scattering plays an important role. Electronically the same samples show a metallic conduction down to 4.2 K, which strongly suggests that NaCo_2O_4 exhibits…
In the quest for materials with unconventional quantum phases, the organic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ has been extensively discussed as a quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate. Recently, an intriguing quantum critical behaviour was suggested from low-temperature magnetic torque experiments. Through microscopic analysis of all anisotropic contributions, including Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and multi-spin scalar chiral interactions, we highlight significant deviations of the experimental observations from a quantum critical scenario. Instead, we show that disorder-ind…
I show that for a κ-type organic (BEDT-TTF)_2-X molecular crystal, a superconducting state with T_c ~ 10 K and gap nodes on the Fermi surface can be caused by short-ranged antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Using a two-band description for the anti-bonding orbitals on a BEDT-TTF dimer of the κ-type salt, and an intermediate local Coulomb repulsion between two holes on one dimer, the magnetic interaction and the superconducting gap-function are determined self consistently within the fluctuation exchange approximation. The pairing interaction is predominantly caused by inter-band coupling and…
We report the results of neutron diffraction, ac and dc magnetization, heat-capacity, complex permittivity, and pyrocurrent measurements on an oxide, Li3NiRuO5, hitherto not paid much attention in the literature, except for a previous report on its promising electrochemical performance. We emphasize on the following findings: (i) Observation of re-entrant spin-glass behavior; that is, this oxide undergoes ferrilmagnetic ordering below 8- K, entering spin-glass regime around 12 K. (ii) There is no prominent feature in the complex dielectric permittivity (in particular, at the magnetic transitio…
The specific heat of the layered organic superconductor $κ$-% (BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$, where BEDT-TTF is bisethylenedithio-% tetrathiafulvalene, has been studied in magnetic fields up to 28 T applied perpendicular and parallel to the superconducting layers. In parallel fields above 21 T, the superconducting transition becomes first order, which signals that the Pauli-limiting field is reached. Instead of saturating at this field value, the upper critical field increases sharply and a second first-order transition line appears within the superconducting phase. Our results give strong evidence…
We present an resonating valence bond (RVB) theory of superconductivity for the Hubbard--Heisenberg model on an anisotropic triangular lattice. We show that these calculations are consistent with the observed phase diagram of the half-filled layered organic superconductors, such as the beta, beta', kappa and lambda phases of (BEDT-TTF)_2X [bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] and (BETS)_2X [bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene]. We find a first order transition from a Mott insulator to a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor with a small superfluid stiffness and a pseudogap with d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry…
The phase diagram of the layered organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl has been accurately measured from a combination of $^{1}$H NMR and AC susceptibility techniques under helium gas pressure. The domains of stability of antiferromagnetic and superconducting long-range orders in the pressure {\it vs} temperature plane have been determined. Both phases overlap through a first-order boundary that separates two regions of inhomogeneous phase coexistence. The boundary curve is found to merge with another first order line related to the metal-insulator transition in the paramagnet…
Fluctuation spectroscopy is used to investigate the organic bandwidth-controlled Mott system $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Cl. We find evidence for percolative-type superconductivity in the spatially inhomogeneous coexistence region of antiferromagnetic insulating and superconducting states which develops under pressure at low temperatures. When the superconducting transition is driven by a magnetic field, percolation seems to be dominated by unstable superconducting clusters upon approaching $T_c (B)$ from above, before a "classical" type of percolation is resumed at low fields, dominated by…
The $κ$-(ET)$_2$X layered conductors (where ET stands for BEDT-TTF) are studied within the dimer model as a function of the diagonal hopping $t^\prime$ and Hubbard repulsion $U$. Antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity are investigated at zero temperature using variational cluster perturbation theory (V-CPT). For large $U$, Néel antiferromagnetism exists for $t' < t'_{c2}$, with $t'_{c2}\sim 0.9$. For fixed $t'$, as $U$ is decreased (or pressure increased), a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting phase appears. When $U$ is decreased further, the a $d_{xy}$ order takes over. There is a critical…
While the optical properties of the superconducting salt $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$NH$_4$Hg(SCN)$_4$ remain metallic down to 2 K, in the non-superconducting K-analog a pseudogap develops at frequencies of about 200 cm$^{-1}$ for temperatures T < 200 K. Based on exact diagonalisation calculations on an extended Hubbard model at quarter-filling we argue that fluctuations associated with short range charge ordering are responsible for the observed low-frequency feature. The different ground states, including superconductivity, are a consequence of the proximity of these compounds to a quantum phase charg…
The angle-dependences of the magnetoresistance of two different isotopic substitutions (deuterated and undeuterated) of the layered organic superconductor κ-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2 are presented. The angle dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) arising from the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) and quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) Fermi surfaces in this material are often confused. By using the Boltzman transport equation extensive simulations of the AMRO are made that reveal the subtle differences between the different species of oscillation. No significant differences are observed in the electronic para…
We report structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of layered perovskite materials LnBaCuFeO5 (Ln = La and Lu). LaBaCuFeO5 shows magnetic cluster glass behavior below 60 K owing to the competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. Glassy dynamics of electric dipoles has also been observed in the vicinity of the magnetic glass transition temperature. The presence of significant coupling between spin and polar degrees of freedom results in the multiglass feature in LaBaCuFeO5. The LuBaCuFeO5 compound undergoes YBaCuFeO5 like commensurate to incommensurate antiferroma…
In the organic superconducting κ-(BEDT-TTF) compounds, various transport phenomena exhibit striking non-Fermi liquid behaviors, which should be the important clues to understanding the electronic state of this system. Especially, the Hall coefficient ($R_H$) shows Curie-Weiss type temperature dependence, which is similar to that of high-Tc cuprates. In this paper, we study a Hubbard model on an anisotropic triangular lattice at half filling, which is an effective model of κ-(BEDT-TTF) compounds. Based on the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation, we calculate the resistivity ($ρ$) and $R_H…
Confined electrons in low dimensions host desirable material functions for downscaled electronics as well as advanced energy technologies. Thermoelectricity is a most fascinating example, since the dimensionality modifies the electron density of states dramatically, leading to enhanced thermopower as experimentally examined in artificial two-dimensional (2D) structures. However, it is still an open question whether such an enhanced thermopower in low dimensions is realized in layered materials with strong 2D characters such as cuprates. Here, we report unusual enhancement of the thermopower in…
The dynamical properties of an extended Hubbard model, which is relevant to quarter-filled layered organic molecular crystals, are analyzed. We have computed the dynamical charge correlation function, spectral density, and optical conductivity using Lanczos diagonalization and large-N techniques. As the ratio of the nearest-neighbour Coulomb repulsion, V, to the hopping integral, t, increases there is a transition from a metallic phase to a charge ordered phase. Dynamical properties close to the ordering transition are found to differ from the ones expected in a conventional metal. Large-N cal…
We present systematic magnetic torque studies of the ``magnetic field - temperature'' phase diagram of the layered organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4 at fields nearly perpendicular and nearly parallel to the highly conducting plane. The shape of the phase diagram is compared to that predicted for a charge-density-wave system in a broad field range.
We report here a detailed study of AC/DC magnetization and longitudinal/transverse transport properties of La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystals below $T_{c}$ = 121 K. We find that the resistivity upturn below 40 K is related to the reentrant spin glass phase at the same temperature, accompanied by additional anomalous Hall effects. The carrier concentration from the ordinary Hall effects remains constant during the transition and is close to the nominal doping level (0.4 holes/Mn). The spin glass behavior comes from the competition between ferromagnetic double exchange and antif…
Phase-change memory (PCM), a promising candidate for next-generation non-volatile memories, exploits quenched glassy and thermodynamically stable crystalline states as reversibly switchable state variables. We demonstrate PCM functions emerging from a charge-configuration degree of freedom in strongly correlated electron systems. Non-volatile reversible switching between a high-resistivity charge-crystalline (or charge-ordered) state and a low-resistivity quenched state, charge glass, is achieved experimentally via heat pulses supplied by optical or electrical means in organic conductors $θ$-(…
We solve the Sp(N) Heisenberg and SU(N) Hubbard-Heisenberg models on the anisotropic triangular lattice in the large-N limit. These two models may describe respectively the magnetic and electronic properties of the family of layered organic materials $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X. The Heisenberg model is also relevant to the frustrated antiferromagnet, Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. We find rich phase diagrams for each model. The Sp(N) antiferromagnet is shown to have five different phases as a function of the size of the spin and the degree of anisotropy of the triangular lattice. The effects of fluctuations at finit…
We present a group theoretic analysis of several classes of organic superconductors. We argue that highly frustrated half-filled layered organic superconductors, such as kappa-(ET)_2Cu2(CN)_3 (where ET is BEDT-TTF) and beta'-[Pd(dmit)_2]_2X, undergo two superconducting phase transitions, the first from the normal state to a d-wave superconductor and the second to a d+id state. We show that the monoclinic distortion of kappa-(ET)_2Cu(NCS)_2 means that the symmetry of its superconducting order parameter is different from that of orthorhombic kappa-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br. We propose that quarter fil…
The fascinating electronic properties of the family of layered organic molecular crystals kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2X where X is an anion (e.g., X=I3, Cu[N(CN)2]Br, Cu(SCN)2) are reviewed. These materials are particularly interesting because of similarities to the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors including unconventional metallic properties and competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. The temperature dependence of electrical transport, optical, and nuclear magnetic resonance properties deviate significantly from those of a conventional metal. In particular, there appears to be an…
The ac-susceptibility of the electron doped single-layered manganite La$_{1.1}$Sr$_{0.9}$MnO$_4$ is analyzed in detail. A quasi two-dimensional (2$D$) antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with Ising anisotropy is stabilized below $T_N$ $\sim$ 80K. We show that below $T_N$, a rare 2$D$ spin-glass (SG) correlation develops with the same Ising anisotropy as the AFM state. Using simple scaling arguments of the droplet model, we derive a scaling form for the ac-susceptibility data of a 2$D$ SG, which our experimental data follows fairly well. Due to simplifications in this 2$D$ case, the proposed scaling …
We propose a novel current-induced thermoelectric phenomenon, the nonlinear anomalous Ettingshausen effect (AEE), at zero magnetic field in inversion-asymmetric conductors. As an example, we discuss the weak charge ordering state in a layered organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, which is a two-dimensional massive Dirac fermion system with a pair of tilted Dirac cones. The nonlinear AEE is a thermoelectric analogue of the nonlinear anomalous Hall effect, which is recently observed in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, and these two effects generally appear simultaneously. The nonlinear AEE generates a tran…
A detailed investigation of the charge-ordered charge-transfer salt δ-(EDT-TTF-CONMe$_{2}$)$_{2}$Br by thermal-expansion measurements and dielectric spectroscopy reveals three dynamic processes of relaxational character. The slowest one exhibits the characteristics of glassy freezing and is ascribed to the conformational dynamics of terminal ethylene groups of the organic molecules. Such a process was previously found for related charge-transfer salts where, however, the anions form polymerlike chains, in contrast to the spherical anions of the present material. Dielectric spectroscopy reveals…
The charge degrees of freedom in several different organic charge transfer salts display slow or glassy dynamics. In order to gain insight into this behaviour, we obtain the low energy theory for an extended dimer Hubbard model, taking into account the occupations of sites on neighbouring dimers. We take a classical limit of the resulting effective model of coupled spins and dimers and study it using classical Monte Carlo simulations. We find that frustration induced by intra- and inter-dimer interactions leads to glassiness in the charge degress of freedom in the absence of ordering of the sp…
Non-Fermi liquid behavior is shown to occur in two-dimensional metals which are close to a charge ordering transition driven by the Coulomb repulsion. A linear temperature dependence of the scattering rate together with an increase of the electron effective mass occur above T*, a temperature scale much smaller than the Fermi temperature. It is shown that the anomalous temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of the quasi-two-dimensional organic metal alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2MHg(SCN)4, with M=NH4 and Rb, above T*=50-100 K, agrees qualitatively with our predictions for the electronic properti…
We posit that there exist deep and fundamental relationships between the above seemingly very different materials. The carrier concentration-dependences of the electronic behavior in the conducting organic charge-transfer solids and layered cobaltates are very similar. These dependences can be explained within a single theoretical model, - the extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with significant nearest neighbor Coulomb repulsion. Interestingly, superconductivity in the cobaltates seems to be restricted to bandfilling exactly or close to one-quarter, as in the organics. We show that dynamic Jahn-Tell…
The vortex state in a single crystal of the layered organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF2Cu(NCS)2, where BEDT-TTF (or ET) is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene, was studied by 1H-NMR. Under a low field region around 0.75 T, the vortex glass-liquid transition was demonstrated by a diverging of the longitudinal nuclear spin relaxation rate and peak-broadening in spectra. Under a high field region near the upper critical field Hc2(0)~7 T, the curvature of nuclear spin relaxation curves showed a drastic change at the temperature where the emergence of the quantum vortex slush state was reported. …
The effect of incoherent interlayer transport on the interlayer resistance of a layered metal is considered. We find that for both quasi-one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional Fermi liquids the angular dependence of the magnetoresistance is essentially the same for coherent and incoherent transport. Consequently, the existence of a three-dimensional Fermi surface is not necessary to explain the oscillations in the magnetoresistance that are seen in many organic conductors as the field direction is varied.
The dielectric constant and ac conductivity have been measured for the layered organic conductor theta-(BEDT-TTF)_2CsZn(SCN)_4 along the out-of-plane direction, which show a relaxation behavior similar to those in the charge-density-wave conductor. Most unexpectedly, they exhibit a large bias dependence with a hysteresis, and changes in magnitude by 100-1000 times at a threshold. These findings are very similar to the collective excitation of the charge density wave. theta-$(BEDT-TTF)_2CsZn(SCN)_4 has collective excitations associated with charge ordering, though it shows no clear indication o…
We present high-resolution measurements of the relative length change as a function of temperature of the organic charge-transfer salt $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Cl. We identify anomalous features at $T_g \approx\,63$ K which can be assigned to a kinetic glass-like ordering transition. By determining the activation energy $E_A$, this glass-like transition can be related to conformational degrees of freedom of the ethylene endgroups of the organic building block BEDT-TTF. As opposed to other $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$ salts, we identify a peculiar ethylene endgroup ordering in the present material i…
We have synthesized the novel material Na_2IrO_3 and studied its structure, transport, magnetic, and thermal properties using powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), electrical resistivity, isothermal magnetization M versus magnetic field H, static χand dynamic χ_ac magnetic susceptibility versus temperature T, and heat capacity C versus T measurements. Na_2IrO_3 crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c (No. 15) structure which is made up of Na and NaIr_2O_6 layers alternately stacked along the c axis. From a Rietveld refinement of the PXRD pattern we identify atomic disorder arising from a mixing of Ir a…
We report an unusual nearly ferromagnetic, heavy-mass state with a surprisingly large Wilson ratio $R_{\textrm{w}}$ (e.g., $R_{\textrm{w}}\sim$ 700 for $x =$ 0.2) in double layered ruthenates (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_{3}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ with 0.08 $< x <$ 0.4. This state does not evolve into a long-range ferromagnetically ordered state despite considerably strong ferromagnetic correlations, but freezes into a cluster-spin-glass at low temperatures. In addition, evidence of non-Fermi liquid behavior is observed as the spin freezing temperature of the cluster-spin-glass approaches zero near $x \appr…
The superconducting transition in the layered organic compound α-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 has been studied in the two hydrostatic pressure regimes where a charge-density wave is either present or completely suppressed. Within the charge-density-wave state the experimental results reveal a network of weakly coupled superconducting regions. This is especially seen in a strong enhancement of the measured critical field and the corresponding positive curvature of its temperature dependence. Further, it is shown that on lowering the pressure into the density-wave state traces of a superconducting pha…
We have investigated the peculiar structure of charge and spin ordering in the half-doped layered perovskite oxide La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_4$ by elastic neutron scattering. Two samples with different preparation histories were studied. We find that the generic features of the ordered states, such as their short-range, glassy nature and the spin incommensurability, are sample-independent. At the same time, some subtle features of the ordered phases, such as the correlation lengths, differ.
The magnetic-field, temperature, and angular dependence of the interlayer magnetoresistance of two different quasi-two-dimensional (2D) organic superconductors is reported. For $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ we find a well-resolved peak in the angle-dependent magnetoresistance at $Θ= 90^\circ$ (field parallel to the layers). This clear-cut proof for the coherent nature of the interlayer transport is absent for $β$''-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$SF$_5$CH$_2$CF$_2$SO$_3$. This and the non-metallic behavior of the magnetoresistance suggest an incoherent quasiparticle motion for the latter 2D metal.
The kagome lattice, whose electronic valence band (VB) structure includes two Dirac bands and one flat band, offers a rich space to realise tuneable topological and strongly correlated electronic phases in two-dimensional (2D) and layered materials. While strong electron correlations have been observed in inorganic kagome crystals, they remain elusive in organic systems. The latter offer versatile synthesis protocols via molecular self-assembly and metal-ligand coordination. Here, we report the synthesis of a 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) where di-cyano-anthracene (DCA) molecules form a kag…
We propose an experimental method to examine the in-plane anisotropy of electronic structure in layered conductors. In the method, we measure the interlayer magnetoresistance as a function of in-plane magnetic field orientation. We applied it to an organic Dirac fermion system a-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 to experimentally determine the orientation of the anisotropic Dirac cones. It is concluded that the long axis of the elliptic constant-energy contours of the Dirac cone is tilted by approximately -30 deg from the crystalline a-axis to b-axis under hydrostatic pressures. Additionally, we observed a signat…
Single crystals of the layered organic type II superconductor, $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$, have been studied in magnetic fields of up to 33 T and at temperatures between 0.5 K and 11 K using a compact differential susceptometer. When the magnetic field lies precisely in the quasi-two-dimensional planes of the material, there is strong evidence for a phase transition from the superconducting mixed state into a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, manisfested as a change in the rigidity of the vortex system. The behaviour of the transition as a function of temperature is in good…
