The temperature and transverse field dependence of the entropy and the specific heat of ferroics in the quantum paramagnetic (QPa) state is investigated using the transverse Ising model (TIM) with different spin values within mean field and Gaussian spin fluctuation approximations. A maximum peak of the temperature dependence of the specific heat curves is enhanced in the QPa state due to spin fluctuations. This peak shifts to higher temperature region and its magnitude reduces with increasing transverse field. In addition, the temperature corresponding to this maximum depends linearly on the deviation of the transverse field from its critical value. The obtained specific heat qualitatively agrees with the experimental observation for the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Ising ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in the QPa phase. It is also shown that the spin-1/2 three dimensional (3D) TIM clearly describes the specific heat of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in the QPa states near the critical temperature. However, the spin-3/2 3D-TIM is more adequate than the spin-1/2 3D-TIM for describing the thermal behavior of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in the QPa states at high fields and at elevated temperatures.
We have studied magnetodielectric and spin-lattice coupling in CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ single crystals. Magnetostriction and magnetodielectric experiments are performed at temperatures in and above antifferomagnetic phase of quasi 1D Ising spin chain CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Field induced magnetic transitions are clearly reflected in magnetodielectric measurement as well as magnetostriction measurement also. Two sharp anomalies are found around the critical fields of antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition and ferrimagnetic to saturated paramagnetic transition in both magnetodielectric and magnetost…
We construct a microscopic spin-exchange Hamiltonian for the quasi-1D Ising magnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ that captures detailed and hitherto-unexplained aspects of its dynamic spin structure factor. We perform a symmetry analysis that recalls that an individual Ising chain in this material is buckled, with two sites in each unit cell related by a glide symmetry. Combining this with numerical simulations benchmarked against neutron scattering experiments, we argue that the single-chain Hamiltonian contains a staggered spin-exchange term. We further argue that the transverse-field-tuned quantum critical…
CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is one of the few materials that is known to approximate the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model (1D-TFIM) near its quantum critical point. It has been inferred that Co$^{2+}$ acts as a pseudo-spin 1/2 with anisotropic exchange interactions that are largely Ising-like, enabling the realization of the TFIM. However, the behavior of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is known to diverge from the ideal TFIM under transverse magnetic fields that are far from the quantum critical point, requiring the consideration of additional anisotropic, bond-dependent (Kitaev-like) terms in the microscopic ps…
The transverse Ising magnet Hamiltonian describing the Ising chain in a transverse magnetic field is the archetypal example of a system that undergoes a transition at a quantum critical point (QCP). The columbite CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is the closest realization of the transverse Ising magnet found to date. At low temperatures, neutron diffraction has observed a set of discrete collective spin modes near the QCP. We ask if there are low-lying spin excitations distinct from these relatively high energy modes. Using the heat capacity, we show that a significant band of gapless spin excitations exists. At…
Kink bound states in the one dimensional ferromagnetic Ising chain compound CoNb$_2$O$_6$ have been studied using high resolution time-domain terahertz spectroscopy in zero applied magnetic field. When magnetic order develops at low temperature, nine bound states of kinks become visible. Their energies can be modeled exceedingly well by the Airy function solutions to a 1D Schrödinger equation with a linear confining potential. This sequence of bound states terminates at a threshold energy near two times the energy of the lowest bound state. Above this energy scale we observe a broad feature co…
We present experimental and theoretical evidence that an interesting quantum many-body effect -- quasi-particle breakdown -- occurs in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising-like ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in its paramagnetic phase at high transverse field as a result of explicit breaking of spin inversion symmetry. We propose a quantum spin Hamiltonian capturing the essential one-dimensional physics of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ and determine the exchange parameters of this model by fitting the calculated single particle dispersion to the one observed experimentally in applied transverse magnetic fields.…
CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is a rare realization of the transverse field Ising model (TFIM), making it a useful tool for studying both equilibrium and non-equilibrium many-body quantum physics. Despite a large body of work dedicated to characterizing this material, details of the ordered states in the presence of relatively weak transverse fields have not been discussed in detail. Here, we present a detailed study of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ via ac susceptibility measurements in order to further characterize its low temperature behavior in the presence of a transverse field. Specifically, we call attention to an unco…
Excitations of quantum Ising chain CoNb2O6 in low transverse field: quantitative description of bound states stabilized by off-diagonal exchange and applied field
Tuning the confinement potential between spinons in the Ising chain CoNb2O6 using longitudinal fields and quantitative determination of the microscopic Hamiltonian
The quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Ising ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ has recently been driven via applied transverse magnetic fields through a continuous quantum phase transition from spontaneous magnetic order to a quantum paramagnet, and dramatic changes were observed in the spin dynamics, characteristic of weakly perturbed 1D Ising quantum criticality. We report here extensive single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations throughout the three-dimensional (3D) Brillouin zone in the quantum paramagnetic phase just above the critical field to characterize the e…
In a recent experiment on CoNb_2O_6, Coldea et al. [Science 327, 177 (2010)] found for the first time experimental evidence of the exceptional Lie algebra E_8. The emergence of this symmetry was theoretically predicted long ago for the transverse quantum Ising chain in the presence of a weak longitudinal field. We consider an accurate microscopic model of CoNb_2O_6 incorporating additional couplings and calculate numerically the dynamical structure function using a recently developed matrix-product-state method. The excitation spectra show bound states characteristic of the weakly broken E_8 s…
Close to the quantum critical point of the transverse-field Ising spin-chain model, an exotic dynamic spectrum was predicted to emerge upon a perturbative longitudinal field. The dynamic spectrum consists of eight particles and is governed by the symmetry of the $E_8$ Lie algebra. Here we report on high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy of quantum spin dynamics in the ferromagnetic Ising-chain material CoNb$_2$O$_6$. At 0.25 K in the magnetically ordered phase we identify characteristics of the first six $E_8$ particles, $\mathbf{m}_1$ to $\mathbf{m}_6$, and the two-particle ($\mathbf{m}_1+\ma…
The transverse field Ising chain (TFIC) model is ideally suited for testing the fundamental ideas of quantum phase transitions, because its well-known $T=0$ ground state can be extrapolated to finite temperatures. Nonetheless, the lack of appropriate model materials hindered the past effort to test the theoretical predictions. Here we map the evolution of quantum fluctuations in the TFIC based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements of CoNb$_2$O$_6$, and demonstrate the finite temperature effects on quantum criticality for the first time. From the temperature dependence of the $^{93}$…
The Ising chain in transverse field is a paradigmatic model for a host of physical phenomena, including spontaneous symmetry breaking, topological defects, quantum criticality, and duality. Although the quasi-1D ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ has been put forward as the best material example of the transverse field Ising model, it exhibits significant deviations from ideality. Through a combination of THz spectroscopy and theory, we show that CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in fact is well described by a different model with strong bond dependent interactions, which we dub the {\it twisted Kitaev chain}, as these in…
We calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the generalized spin-$1/2$ compass spin chain using the density matrix renormalization group. The model, also known as the twisted Kitaev spin chain, was recently proposed to be relevant for the description of the spin chain compound CoNb$_2$O$_6$. It features bond-dependent interactions and interpolates between an Ising chain and a one-dimensional variant of Kitaev's honeycomb spin model. The structure factor, in turn, is found to interpolate from gapped and non-dispersive in the Ising limit to gapless with non-trivial continua in the Kitaev…
A spectrum exhibiting $E_8$ symmetry is expected to arise when a small longitudinal field is introduced in the transverse-field Ising chain at its quantum critical point. Evidence for this spectrum has recently come from neutron scattering measurements in cobalt niobate, a quasi one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet. Unlike its zero-temperature counterpart, the finite-temperature dynamics of the model has not yet been determined. We study the dynamical spin structure factor of the model at low frequencies and nonzero temperatures, using the form factor method. Its frequency dependence is singular,…
Quantum phase transitions occur at zero temperature upon variation of some nonthermal control parameters. The Ising chain in a transverse field is probably the most-studied model undergoing such a transition, from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state1,2. This model can be exactly solved by using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, which transforms the spins into noninteracting spinless fermions1. At the quantum critical point, the magnetic excitations can carry arbitrarily low energy and dominate the low temperature properties. Here we report the unveiling of such quantum critical point in quasi-on…
Quantum phase transitions take place between distinct phases of matter at zero temperature. Near the transition point, exotic quantum symmetries can emerge that govern the excitation spectrum of the system. A symmetry described by the E8 Lie group with a spectrum of 8 particles was long predicted to appear near the critical point of an Ising chain. We realize this system experimentally by tuning the quasi-one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet CoNb2O6 through its critical point using strong transverse magnetic fields. The spin excitations are observed to change character from pairs of kinks in the …
We examine the low frequency spin susceptibility of the paramagnetic phase of the quantum Ising chain in transverse field at temperatures well below the energy gap. We find that the imaginary part is dominated by rare quantum processes in which the number of quasiparticles changes by an odd number. We obtain exact results for the NMR relaxation rate in the low temperature limit for the integrable model with nearest-neighbor Ising interactions, and derive exact universal scaling results applicable to generic Ising chains near the quantum critical point. These results resolve certain discrepanci…
We study the nonlinear response of non-integrable 1D spin models using infinite matrix-product state techniques. As a benchmark and demonstration of the method, we first calculate the 2D coherent spectroscopy for the exactly soluble ferromagnetic transverse field Ising model, where excitations are freely moving domain-walls. We then investigate the distinct signatures of confined bound states by introducing a longitudinal field and observe the emergence of strong non-rephasing like signals. To interpret the observed phenomena, we use a two-kink approximation to perturbatively compute the 2D sp…
We show that the new technique of terahertz 2D coherent spectroscopy is capable of giving qualitatively new information about fractionalized spin systems. For the prototypical example of the transverse field Ising chain, we demonstrate theoretically that, despite the broad continuum of excitations in linear response, the 2D spectrum contains sharp features that are a coherent signature of a `spinon echo', which gives previously inaccessible information such as the lifetime of the two-spinon excited state. The effects of disorder and finite lifetime, which are practically indistinguishable in t…
The study of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ sits at the confluence of simplicity and complexity: on one hand, the model for Ising chains -- the building blocks of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ -- in a transverse field, can be exactly solved and, thus, serves as an archetype of quantum criticality; on the other hand, the weak but nonzero interchain coupling adds geometric frustration to the stage, substantially complicating the phase diagram. Here we utilize low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements to study the low-lying magnetic excitations in CoNb$_2$O$_6$ and its spin-1 analogue NiNb$_2$O$_6$. The…
Domain-walls in one-dimensional Ising ferromagnets can undergo Bloch oscillations when subjected to a skew magnetic field. Such oscillations imply finite temperature non-dispersive low-frequency peaks in the dynamical structure factor which can be probed in neutron scattering. We study in detail the spectral weight of these peaks. Using an analytical approach based on an approximate treatment of a gas of spin-cluster excitations we give an explicit expression for the momentum- and temperature-dependence of the spectral weights. Generally the spectral weights increase with temperature and appro…
