The quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Ising ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ has recently been driven via applied transverse magnetic fields through a continuous quantum phase transition from spontaneous magnetic order to a quantum paramagnet, and dramatic changes were observed in the spin dynamics, characteristic of weakly perturbed 1D Ising quantum criticality. We report here extensive single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations throughout the three-dimensional (3D) Brillouin zone in the quantum paramagnetic phase just above the critical field to characterize the effects of the finite interchain couplings. In this phase, we observe that excitations have a sharp, resolution-limited line shape at low energies and over most of the dispersion bandwidth, as expected for spin-flip quasiparticles. We map the full bandwidth along the strongly dispersive chain direction and resolve clear modulations of the dispersions in the plane normal to the chains, characteristic of frustrated interchain couplings in an antiferromagnetic isosceles triangular lattice. The dispersions can be well parametrized using a linear spin-wave model that includes interchain couplings and further neighbor exchanges. The observed dispersion bandwidth along the chain direction is smaller than that predicted by a linear spin-wave model using exchange values determined at zero field, and this effect is attributed to quantum renormalization of the dispersion beyond the spin-wave approximation in fields slightly above the critical field, where quantum fluctuations are still significant.
We synthesized a quasi-two-dimensional distorted triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ca$_3$CoNb$_2$O$_9$, in which the effective spin of Co$^{2+}$ is 1/2 at low temperatures, whose magnetic properties were studied by dc susceptibility and magnetization techniques. The x-ray diffraction confirms the quality of our powder samples. The large Weiss constant $θ_{CW}\sim$ $-55$ K and the low Neel temperature($T_N\sim$ 1.45 K) give a frustration factor $f$ ($=\midθ_{CW}/T_N \mid$) $\approx$ 38, suggesting that Ca$_3$CoNb$_2$O$_9$ resides in strong frustration regime. Slightly below $T_N$, deviation be…
We have studied magnetodielectric and spin-lattice coupling in CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ single crystals. Magnetostriction and magnetodielectric experiments are performed at temperatures in and above antifferomagnetic phase of quasi 1D Ising spin chain CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Field induced magnetic transitions are clearly reflected in magnetodielectric measurement as well as magnetostriction measurement also. Two sharp anomalies are found around the critical fields of antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition and ferrimagnetic to saturated paramagnetic transition in both magnetodielectric and magnetost…
Motivated by CoNb2O6 (belonging to the columbite family of minerals), we theoretically study the physics of quantum ferromagnetic Ising chains coupled anti-ferromagnetically on a triangular lattice in the plane perpendicular to the chain direction. We combine exact solutions of the chain physics with perturbative approximations for the transverse couplings. When the triangular lattice has an isosceles distortion (which occurs in the real material), the T=0 phase diagram is rich with five different states of matter: ferrimagnetic, Néel, anti-ferromagnetic, paramagnetic and incommensurate phases…
The temperature and transverse field dependence of the entropy and the specific heat of ferroics in the quantum paramagnetic (QPa) state is investigated using the transverse Ising model (TIM) with different spin values within mean field and Gaussian spin fluctuation approximations. A maximum peak of the temperature dependence of the specific heat curves is enhanced in the QPa state due to spin fluctuations. This peak shifts to higher temperature region and its magnitude reduces with increasing transverse field. In addition, the temperature corresponding to this maximum depends linearly on the …
CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is one of the few materials that is known to approximate the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model (1D-TFIM) near its quantum critical point. It has been inferred that Co$^{2+}$ acts as a pseudo-spin 1/2 with anisotropic exchange interactions that are largely Ising-like, enabling the realization of the TFIM. However, the behavior of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ is known to diverge from the ideal TFIM under transverse magnetic fields that are far from the quantum critical point, requiring the consideration of additional anisotropic, bond-dependent (Kitaev-like) terms in the microscopic ps…
We present experimental and theoretical evidence that an interesting quantum many-body effect -- quasi-particle breakdown -- occurs in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising-like ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in its paramagnetic phase at high transverse field as a result of explicit breaking of spin inversion symmetry. We propose a quantum spin Hamiltonian capturing the essential one-dimensional physics of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ and determine the exchange parameters of this model by fitting the calculated single particle dispersion to the one observed experimentally in applied transverse magnetic fields.…
The study of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ sits at the confluence of simplicity and complexity: on one hand, the model for Ising chains -- the building blocks of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ -- in a transverse field, can be exactly solved and, thus, serves as an archetype of quantum criticality; on the other hand, the weak but nonzero interchain coupling adds geometric frustration to the stage, substantially complicating the phase diagram. Here we utilize low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements to study the low-lying magnetic excitations in CoNb$_2$O$_6$ and its spin-1 analogue NiNb$_2$O$_6$. The…
Hexagonal CeRhSn with paramagnetic $4f$ moments on a distorted Kagome lattice displays zero-field quantum critical behavior related to geometrical frustration. We report high-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements under multiextreme conditions such as uniaxial stress up to 200 MPa, temperatures down to 0.1 K and magnetic fields up to 10 T. Under uniaxial stress along the $a$-direction, quantum criticality disappears and a complex magnetic phase diagram arises with a sequence of phases below 1.2 K and fields between 0 and 3 T ($\parallel a$). Since the Kondo coupling inc…
The Ising chain in transverse field is a paradigmatic model for a host of physical phenomena, including spontaneous symmetry breaking, topological defects, quantum criticality, and duality. Although the quasi-1D ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ has been put forward as the best material example of the transverse field Ising model, it exhibits significant deviations from ideality. Through a combination of THz spectroscopy and theory, we show that CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in fact is well described by a different model with strong bond dependent interactions, which we dub the {\it twisted Kitaev chain}, as these in…
The strongly correlated spin-electron system on a diamond chain containing localized Ising spins on its nodal lattice sites and mobile electrons on its interstitial sites is exactly solved in a magnetic field using the transfer-matrix method. We have investigated in detail all available ground states, the magnetization processes, the spin-spin correlation functions around an elementary plaquette, fermionic quantum concurrence and spin frustration. It is shown that the fermionic entanglement between mobile electrons hopping on interstitial sites and the kinetically-induced spin frustration are …
We report the detailed analysis of specific heat [C$_{\rm P}$(T)] and ac-susceptibility for magnetically frustrated Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CoNbO$_6$ ($x=$ 0--1) double perovskites to understand low temperature complex magnetic interactions and their evolution with $x$. Interestingly, the observed Schottky anomaly in the $x\leqslant$ 0.4 samples shifts gradually towards higher temperature with magnetic field as well as $x$, and the analysis reveal the persistence of the discrete energy states in these samples resulting from the spin-orbit coupling and octahedral distortion. Moreover, the extracted val…
We report the results of magnetic, heat-capacity, electrical and magnetoresistance measurements on Ho4RhAl and Er4RhAl, characterized by 3 sites for rare-earths (R). Antiferromagnetic ordering sets in at (T_N =) about 8.8 and 4.0 K respectively. While Ho compound appears to enter into a complex spin-glass phase at T less thanT_N (at nearly 5 K), spin-glass component appears to set in essentially almost at T_N for the Er case. The loss of the spin-disorder contribution in the magnetically ordered state is not pronounced, mimicking that in Gd2PdSi3, a compound which now attracts interest in the …
We investigate the paramagnetic-metal-to-antiferromagnetic-metal and antiferromagnetic-metal-to- antiferromagnetic-insulator transitions using a slave-boson mean-field theory. To this effect, we discuss the ground state of the half-filled Hubbard model as a function of t'/t and correlation strength U, where t and t' are the hopping amplitudes between nearest and next-nearest neighbors, respectively. The metal-insulator transition at a critical U_{MIT} is of second order for small levels of magnetic frustration, t'/t<0.06, and of first order for large ones, t'/t>0.06. The insulator is always an…
The Shastry-Sutherland lattice, one of the simplest systems with geometric frustration, which has an exact eigenstate by putting singlets on diagonal bonds, can be realized in a group of layered compounds and rises both theoretical and experimental interest. Most of the previous studies on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice are focusing on the Heisenberg model. Here we opt for the Hubbard model to calculate phase diagrams over a wide range of interaction parameters, and show the competing effects of interaction, frustration and temperature. At low temperature, frustration is shown to favor a param…
Quantum fluctuations from frustration can trigger quantum spin liquids (QSLs) at zero temperature. However, it is unclear how thermal fluctuations affect a QSL. We employ state-of-the-art tensor network-based methods to explore the ground state and thermodynamic properties of the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHA). Its ground state is shown to be consistent with a gapless QSL by observing the absence of zero-magnetization plateau as well as the algebraic behaviors of susceptibility and specific heat at low temperatures, respectively. We show that there exists an \textit{algebraic…

Using variational cluster approach, we study influence of frustration and dimensionality on magnetic properties in the ground state of Hubbard model on a stacked square lattice in the large $U$ region (U/t=10), by changing the next-nearest-neighbor hopping, $t^{\prime}$, and the interlayer hopping, $t_{\perp}$. For small $t_{\perp}<t^{\ast}_{\perp}$ with $t^{\ast}_{\perp}/t{\approx}0.44$, antiferromagnetic long-range order appears at small $t^{\prime}<t^{\prime}_{c_{1}}$, and collinear magnetic long-range order at large $t^{\prime}>t^{\prime}_{c_{2}}$. They are separated by a paramagnetic Mott…
We demonstrate via a muon spin rotation experiment that the electronic ground state of the iridium spinel compound, CuIr$_2$S$_4$, is not the presumed spin-singlet state but a novel paramagnetic state, showing a quasistatic spin glass-like magnetism below ~100 K. Considering the earlier indication that IrS$_6$ octahedra exhibit dimerization associated with the metal-to-insulator transition below 230 K, the present result suggests that a strong spin-orbit interaction may be playing an important role in determining the ground state that accompanies magnetic frustration.
Quantum phase transitions occur at zero temperature upon variation of some nonthermal control parameters. The Ising chain in a transverse field is probably the most-studied model undergoing such a transition, from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state1,2. This model can be exactly solved by using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, which transforms the spins into noninteracting spinless fermions1. At the quantum critical point, the magnetic excitations can carry arbitrarily low energy and dominate the low temperature properties. Here we report the unveiling of such quantum critical point in quasi-on…
We present a family of two-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets solely based on pure nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions which can be solved quasi-exactly. All lattices are constructed in terms of frustrated quantum cages containing a chiral degree of freedom protected by frustration. The ground states of these models are dubbed ultimate quantum paramagnets and exhibit an extensive entropy at zero temperature. We discuss the unusual and extensively degenerate excitations in such phases. Implications for thermodynamic properties as well as for decoherence free quantum computation are dis…
We study the ground state properties of the geometrically frustrated Hubbard model on the anisotropic checkerboard lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping $t$ and next nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$. By using the path-integral renormalization group method, we study the phase diagram in the parameter space of the Hubbard interaction $U$ and the frustration-control parameter $t'/t$. Close examinations of the effective hopping, the double occupancy, the momentum distribution and the spin/charge correlation functions allow us to determine the phase diagram at zero temperature, where the plaquette-sin…
V2O3 famously features all four combinations of paramagnetic vs antiferromagnetic, and metallic vs insulating states of matter in response to %-level doping, pressure in the GPa range, and temperature below 300 K. Using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations of magnetic interactions, we have mapped and analyzed the inelastic magnetic neutron scattering cross section over a wide range of energy and momentum transfer in the chromium stabilized antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic insulating phases (AFI & PI). Our results reveal an important magneti…
We examine the low frequency spin susceptibility of the paramagnetic phase of the quantum Ising chain in transverse field at temperatures well below the energy gap. We find that the imaginary part is dominated by rare quantum processes in which the number of quasiparticles changes by an odd number. We obtain exact results for the NMR relaxation rate in the low temperature limit for the integrable model with nearest-neighbor Ising interactions, and derive exact universal scaling results applicable to generic Ising chains near the quantum critical point. These results resolve certain discrepanci…
In the eta-carbide-type correlated-electron metal Fe3Mo3N, ferromagnetism is abruptly induced from a nonmagnetic non-Fermi-liquid ground state either when a magnetic field (~14 T) applied to it or when it is doped with a slight amount of impurity (~5% Co). We observed a peak in the paramagnetic neutron scattering intensity at finite wave vectors, revealing the presence of the antiferromagnetic (AF) correlation hidden in the magnetic measurements. It causes a new type of geometrical frustration in the stellla quadrangula lattice of the Fe sublattice. We propose that the frustrated AF correlatio…
We calculated the phase diagram of the Kondo-Heisenberg model on two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with both nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic spin exchanges, to investigate the interplay between RKKY and Kondo interactions at presence of magnetic frustration. Within a mean-field decoupling technology in slave-fermion representation, we derived the zero-temperature phase diagram as a function of Kondo coupling $J_k$ and frustration strength $Q$. The geometrical frustration can destroy the magnetic order, driving the original antiferromagnetic (AF) phase to non-magnet…
Experimental and theoretical studies are performed on La3Ir3O11, an iridate hosting a +4.33 fractional valence state for Ir ions and a three-dimensional frustrated structure composed of edge-shared Ir2O10 dimers. These features are expected to enhance inter-site hoppings and reduce magnetic moments of Ir ions. However, a spin-orbit driven Mott insulating transport is observed, which is supported by our first principles calculations. Most importantly, geometrical frustration and competing interactions result in a non-Curie-Weiss paramagnetic ground state, revealing no magnetic order down to 2 K…
We study the frustrated dimer-plaquette quantum spin chain for ferromagnetic dimer bonds. This quantum system undergoes a series of first-order ground-state phase transitions driven by frustration or by a magnetic field. We find that the different nature of the ground-state phases has a strong influence on the magnetization curve as well as the low-temperature thermodynamics. In particular, the magnetization curve exhibits plateaus and jumps, the number of which depends on the strength of frustration. The temperature dependence of the susceptibility may either show activated spin-gap behaviour…
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), magnetization measurements and electronic structure calculations in VOMoO4 are presented. It is found that VOMoO4 is a frustrated two-dimensional antiferromagnet on a square lattice with competing exchange interactions along the side J1 and the diagonal J2 of the square. From magnetization measurements J1+J2 is estimated around 155 K, in satisfactory agreement with the values derived from electronic structure calculations. Around 100 K a structural distortion, possibly driven by the frustration, is evidenced. This distort…
The iron pnictide and chalcogenide compounds are a subject of intensive investigations due to their high temperature superconductivity.\cite{a-LaFeAsO} They all share the same structure, but there is significant variation in their physical properties, such as magnetic ordered moments, effective masses, superconducting gaps and T$_c$. Many theoretical techniques have been applied to individual compounds but no consistent description of the trends is available \cite{np-review}. We carry out a comparative theoretical study of a large number of iron-based compounds in both their magnetic and param…
In2VO5, containing magnetically frustrated zig-zag chains, shows a remarkable magnetic crossover at 120 K between paramagnetic states with positive (17 K) and negative (-70 K) Weiss temperatures. Magnetic moment and entropy data show that the V4+ S = 1/2 spins condense into S = 1 triplet dimers below the crossover. A further freezing of the antiferromagnetically coupled triplet dimers into a global singlet state is observed at 2.5 K, with no long range magnetic order down to 0.42 K and in fields up to 9 T. No structural V-V dimerization is observed by high-resolution X-ray diffraction down to …
We report results of isothermal magnetotransport and susceptibility measurements at elevated magnetic fields B down to very low temperatures T on high-quality single crystals of the frustrated Kondo-lattice system CePdAl. They reveal a B*(T) line within the paramagnetic part of the phase diagram. This line denotes a thermally broadened 'small'-to-'large' Fermi surface crossover which substantially narrows upon cooling. At B_0* = B*(T=0) = (4.6 +/- 0.1) T, this B*(T) line merges with two other crossover lines, viz. Tp(B) below and T_FL(B) above B_0*. Tp characterizes a frustration-dominated spi…
Based on the ladder dual-fermion approach, we present a comprehensive study of the phases of the isotropic Hubbard model on the triangular lattice. We find a rich phase diagram containing most of the phases that have already been experimentally observed in systems where the interplay between geometric frustration and electronic correlations is important: paramagnetic metal, paramagnetic insulator, Mott-insulator with $120^{\circ}$ antiferromagnetic and a non-magnetic insulating state, i.e. possibly a spin liquid state. This establishes that the Hubbard model on frustrated lattices can serve as…
Ultrasound velocity measurements of cubic spinel GeCo$_2$O$_4$ in single crystal were performed for the investigation of shear and compression moduli. The shear moduli in the paramagnetic state reveal an absence of Jahn-Teller activity despite the presence of orbital degeneracy in the Co$^{2+}$ ions. Such a Jahn-Teller inactivity indicates that the intersite orbital-orbital interaction is much stronger than the Jahn-Teller coupling. The compression moduli in the paramagnetic state near the N$\acute{e}$el temperature $T_N$ reveal that the most relevant exchange path for the antiferromagnetic tr…
Employing the self-learning quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, we investigate the frustrated transverse-field triangle-lattice Ising model coupled to a Fermi surface. Without fermions, the spin degrees of freedom undergoes a second-order quantum phase transition between paramagnetic and clock-ordered phases. This quantum critical point (QCP) has an emergent U(1) symmetry and thus belongs to the (2+1)D XY universality class. In the presence of fermions, spin fluctuations introduce effective interactions among fermions and distort the bare Fermi surface towards an interacting one with hot spots and …
We present a comprehensive neutron scattering study of the breathing pyrochlore magnet LiGaCr4S8. We observe an unconventional magnetic excitation spectrum with a separation of high and low-energy spin dynamics in the correlated paramagnetic regime above a spin-freezing transition at 12(2) K. By fitting to magnetic diffuse-scattering data, we parameterize the spin Hamiltonian. We find that interactions are ferromagnetic within the large and small tetrahedra of the breathing pyrochlore lattice, but antiferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions are also essential to explain our data, in qualit…
Muon spin relaxation on Nd$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ (NTO) and NdLaTi$_2$O$_7$ (NLTO) compounds are presented. The time spectra for both compounds are as expected for the paramagnetic state at high temperatures, but deviate from the exponential function below about 100 K. The muon spin relaxation rate increases with decreasing temperature firstly, and then levels off below about 10 K, which is reminiscent of the frustrated systems. An enhancement of the relaxation rate by a longitudinal field in the paramagnetic state is observed for NTO, and eliminated by a magnetic dilution for the NLTO sample. This su…
We study the coupled-top model with three large spins located on a triangle. Depending on the coupling strength, there exist three phases: disordered paramagnetic phase, ferromagnetic phase, and frustrated antiferromagnetic phase, which can be distinguished by the mean-field approach. The paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition is accompanied by the breaking of the global $Z_2$ symmetry, whereas the paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic phase transition is accompanied by the breaking of both the global $Z_2$ symmetry and the translational symmetry. Exact analytical results of higher-order quantum…
We report $^{31}$P and $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies in new non-olivine LiZnPO$_4$-type LiCoPO$_4^\text{tetra}$ microcrystals, where the Co$^{2+}$ ions are tetrahedrally coordinated. Olivine LiCoPO$_4$, which was directly transformed from LiCoPO$_4^\text{tetra}$ by an annealing process, was also studied and compared. The uniform bulk magnetic susceptibility and the $^{31}$P Knight shift obey the Curie-Weiss law for both materials with a high spin Co$^{2+}$ ($3d^7$, $S=3/2$), but the Weiss temperature $Θ$ and the effective magnetic moment $μ_\text{eff}$ are considerably smal…

We investigate the influence of quenched disorder on the dynamic structure factor of Heisenberg bilayers on the square, triangular, and kagome lattice in the quantum paramagnetic phase. Perturbative continuous unitary transformations and white graphs are employed to calculate the one-triplon contribution up to high orders in perturbation about the dimer limit for bimodal and continuous disorder. For the square lattice we find that the lifetime of the gap mode is increased by stronger quantum correlations while stronger disorder effects are observed for the triangular lattice due to geometric f…
Electric quadrupolar state in a frustrated quantum magnet $\rm Tb_{2+\it δ}Ti_{2-\it δ}O_7$ has been studied by means of ultrasonic and magnetostriction measurements. A single crystal showed elastic anomaly at about 0.4 K, manifesting a long-range quadrupole ordering. By investigating anisotropy of the magnetoelastic responses, we found a crossover temperature for the strongly correlated quadrupole state, below which the experimental data of elastic constant and magnetostriction become qualitatively different from their calculations based on a single-ion model. We suppose that relatively high …
The quantum phase transition from a spin-Peierls phase with a small Fermi surface to a paramagnetic Luttinger-liquid phase with a large Fermi surface is studied in the framework of a one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model that consists of an electron gas away from half filling, coupled to a spin-1/2 chain by Kondo interactions. The Kondo spins are further coupled to each other with isotropic nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions which are tuned to the Majumdar-Ghosh point. Focusing on three-eighths filling and using the density-matrix renormalizat…
The ground-state properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hoppings at half filling are studied by the path-integral-renormalization-group method. The nonmagnetic-insulator phase sandwiched by the the paramagnetic-metal phase and the antiferromagnetic-insulator phase shows evidence against translational symmetry breaking of the dimerized state, plaquette singlet state, staggered flux state, and charge ordered state. These results support that the genuine Mott insulator which cannot be adiabatically continued to the band insulator is realize…
Recent developments in the synthesis of new magnetic materials lead to the discovery of new quantum paramagnets. Many of these materials, such as the perovskites Ba$_{4}$LnMn$_{4}$O$_{12}$ (Ln = Sc or Nb), Ba$_{3}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{8}$, and Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ present isolated magnetic clusters with strong intracluster interactions but weak intercluster interactions, which delays the onset of order to lower temperatures ($T$). This offset between the local energy scale and the magnetic ordering temperature is the hallmark of magnetic frustration. At sufficient high-$T$, the paramagnetic suscepti…
Quantum phase transitions take place between distinct phases of matter at zero temperature. Near the transition point, exotic quantum symmetries can emerge that govern the excitation spectrum of the system. A symmetry described by the E8 Lie group with a spectrum of 8 particles was long predicted to appear near the critical point of an Ising chain. We realize this system experimentally by tuning the quasi-one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet CoNb2O6 through its critical point using strong transverse magnetic fields. The spin excitations are observed to change character from pairs of kinks in the …
The magnetocaloric effect in a two-dimensional Ising model is considered for different ratios between parameters of inter-site repulsion of nonmagnetic impurities and exchange coupling. Classical Monte Carlo simulations on a square lattice show that in case of weak coupling and at sufficiently high concentrations of nonmagnetic impurities the long-range ferromagnetic ordering breaks down to give isolated spin clusters in the ground state of the system. This leads to appearance of a paramagnetic response in the system at the zero temperature and nonzero entropy of the ground state. The feasibil…
We study phase diagrams of the Hubbard model on anisotropic triangular lattices, which also represents a model for $κ$-type BEDT-TTF compounds. In contrast with mean-field predictions, path-integral renormalization group calculations show a universal presence of nonmagnetic insulator sandwitched by antiferromagnetic insulator and paramagnetic metals. The nonmagnetic phase does not show a simple translational symmetry breakings such as flux phases, implying a genuine Mott insulator. We discuss possible relevance on the nonmagnetic insulating phase found in $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2(CN)_3$.
Competition between the ferromagnetic double-exchange interaction and the super-exchange antiferromagnetic interaction is theoretically studied in the presence of geometrical frustration. As increasing the super-exchange interaction, the ferromagnetic metal becomes unstable, and is taken over by a cooperative paramagnetic metal, in sharp contrast with a discontinuous transition to the antiferromagnetic insulator in the absence of frustration. In the critical region, the system exhibits a peculiar temperature-independent behavior with highly incoherent transport, suggesting a large residual ent…
We studied phase transitions and thermodynamic properties of the field-induced antiferromagnetic nuclear-spin ordered phase in bcc solid 3He by measuring the melting pressure at temperatures down to 0.4 mK in magnetic fields up to 15 T. The transition temperature from the paramagnetic phase is reentrant with increasing field with a maximum at 10 T. This indicates that the system is highly frustrated by the competing multiple-spin exchanges and excludes other mechanisms related to the zero-point vacancies. The upper critical field was estimated as 19.7 T, which reveals non-negligible contributi…
Antiferromagnetic Order and Magnetic Frustration in the Honeycomb Heavy-Fermion System Ce(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$)$_6$Al$_3$: $^{27}$Al and $^{195}$Pt NMR Studies
We find evidence that superconductivity intrudes into the paramagnetic-to-magnetic transition of the Kondo lattice model if magnetic frustration is added. Specifically, we study by variational method the model on a square lattice in the presence of both nearest- ($t$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($t^\prime$) hopping of the conduction electrons. We find that when $t^\prime/t$ is finite a $d$-wave superconducting dome emerges between the magnetic and paramagnetic metal phases and close to the compensated regime, i.e., the number of conduction electrons equal to the number of localized spin-1/2 mom…
For magnets with a fully frustrated inter-layer interaction, we argue that the quantum phase transitions from a paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic ground state, driven by pressure or magnetic field, are asymptotically three-dimensional, due to interaction-generated non-frustrated inter-layer couplings. However, the relevant crossover scale is tiny, such that two-dimensional behavior occurs in an experimentally relevant low-temperature regime. In the pressure-driven case the phase transition may split, in which case an Ising symmetry related to inter-layer bond order is broken before magnetis…
We investigate various competing paramagnetic ground states of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two dimensional star lattice which exhibits geometric frustration. Using slave particle mean field theory combined with a projective symmetry group analysis, we examine a variety of candidate spin liquid states on this lattice, including chiral spin liquids, spin liquids with Fermi surfaces of spinons, and nematic spin liquids which break lattice rotational symmetry. Motivated by connection to large-N SU(N) theory as well as numerical exact diagonalization studies, we also examine various valen…
Motivated by recent experiments on BaCuSi2O6, we investigate magnetic excitations and quantum phase transitions of layered dimer magnets with inter-layer frustration. We consider two scenarios, (A) a lattice with one dimer per unit cell and perfect inter-layer frustration, and (B) an enlarged unit cell with inequivalent layers, with and without perfect frustration. In all situations, the critical behavior at asymptotically low temperatures is three-dimensional, but the corresponding crossover scale may be tiny. Magnetic ordering in case (B) can be discussed in terms of two condensates; remarka…
The physics underlying the complex glassy phenomena, which accompany the formation of polarons in optimally doped manganites (ODM) is a cumbersome issue with many unexplained aspects. In this article we present $^{139}$La and $^{55}$Mn NMR in the temperature range 80K - 900K of ODM La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$. We show that local lattice distortions, established in the Paramagnetic (PM) phase for $T<700$K, induce a genuine spin-glass state, which for $T<T_c$ consolidates with the Ferromagnetic (FM) state into a single thermodynamic phase. Comparative NMR experiments on La$_{0.77}$Ca$_{0.23}$M…
Insulator-metal transition is investigated self-consistently on the frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice in the framework of Slave-Boson mean-field theory. Due to the presence of quasi-flat band structure characteristic, the system displays a spin-density-wave (SDW) insulating phase at the weak doping levels, which is robust against frustration, and it will be transited into an SDW metallic phase at high doping levels. As further increasing the doping, the temperature or the frustration on the diagonal linking bonds, the magnetic order $m$ will be monotonically suppressed, resulting in the ap…
We study the half-filled Hubbard model on the geometrically frustrated face centered cubic (FCC) lattice, using an auxiliary field based real space technique. The low temperature state is a paramagnetic metal at weak interaction, an antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) with flux like order at intermediate interaction, and an AFI with `C type' order at very strong interaction. Remarkably, there is a narrow window between the paramagnetic metal and the AFI where the system exhibits spin glass behaviour arising from the presence of disordered but `frozen' local moments. The spin glass state is metal…
