We elaborate on the topological order in the Kitaev chain, a p-wave superconductor with nearest-neighbor pairing amplitude equal to the hopping term Delta=t, and chemical potential mu=0. In particular, we write out the explicit eigenstates of the open chain in terms of fermion operators, and show that the states as well as their energy eigenvalues are formally equivalent to those of an Ising chain. The models are physically different, as the topological order in the Kitaev chain corresponds to conventional order in the Ising model.

We show that spin-spin correlations in a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are associated with a characteristic inhomogeneous charge density distribution in the vicinity of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices. This density profile and the corresponding local electric fields are observable, e.g., by means of surface probe techniques. Conversely, by applying bias voltages to several probe tips, one can stabilize Ising anyons ($\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices harboring a Majorana zero mode) at designated positions, where we predict a clear Majorana signature in energy absorption spectroscopy.
In recent years, there have been numerous examples of twisted bilayer systems that host remarkable physical properties that are not found in their untwisted counterparts. Motivated by this, we study the properties of twisted bilayers of the Kitaev honeycomb model in the Abelian spin liquid phase. We show that for strong, short-ranged, interlayer interactions, a super-lattice of non-Abelian defects forms in the twisted bilayer system. These non-Abelian defects are wormhole-like genons that allow anyons from one layer to tunnel to the other layer. We find that when a magnetic field is applied to…
In this work, we analyze the nonsymmorphic symmetry group structures for a variety of generalized Kitaev spin chains and ladders with bond alternations, including Kitaev-Gamma chain, Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma chain, beyond nearest neighbor interactions, and two-leg spin ladders. The symmetry analysis is applied to determine the symmetry breaking patterns of several magnetically ordered phases in the bond-alternating Kitaev-Gamma spin chains, as well as the dimerization order parameters for spontaneous dimerizations. Our work is useful in understanding the magnetic phases in related models and ma…
We study the Kitaev-Ising model, where ferromagnetic Ising interactions are added to the Kitaev model on a lattice. This model has two phases which are characterized by topological and ferromagnetic order. Transitions between these two kinds of order are then studied on a quasi-one dimensional system, a ladder, and on a two dimensional periodic lattice, a torus. By exactly mapping the quasi-one dimensional case to an anisotropic XY chain we show that the transition occurs at zero $λ$ where $λ$ is the strength of the ferromagnetic coupling. In the two dimensional case the model is mapped to a 2…
In this project, we study the properties of a non-trivial topological system which exhibits localized edge states. In our study, we adress the Kitaev chain, a one-dimensional chain of atoms deposited on top of a p-wave superconductor that induces superconductivity in the chain by proximity effect. We establish a correspondence between the Kitaev chain and a tight-binding lattice with a particular geometry for a particular case of the system parameters. This correspondence allows one to find the exact energy levels and eigenstates of the Kitaev chain when t=|Δ| and μ=0 for an arbitrary chain si…
In this general article, we map the one-dimensional transverse field quantum Ising model of ferromagnetism to Kitaev's one-dimensional p-wave superconductor, which has its application in fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. Mapping Pauli's spin operators of transverse Ising chain to spinless fermionic creation and annihilation operators by Inverse Jordan-Wigner transformation leads to a Hamiltonian form closely related to Kitaev Chain, which exhibits topological phase transition where phases are characterized by different topological invariant that changes discontinuously at the trans…
We study Kitaev model in one-dimension with open boundary condition by using exact analytic methods for non-interacting system at zero chemical potential as well as in the symmetric case of Δ = t, and by using density-matrix-renormalizationgroup method for interacting system with nearest neighbor repulsion interaction. We suggest and examine an edge correlation function of Majorana fermions to characterize the long range order in the topological superconducting states and study the phase diagram of the interating Kitaev chain.
We study the interplay between the Kitaev and Ising interactions on both ladder and two dimensional lattices. We show that the ground state of the Kitaev ladder is a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase, which is protected by a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. It is confirmed by the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum and non-trivial phase factors (inequivalent projective representations of the symmetries), which are obtained within infinite matrix-product representation of numerical density matrix renormalization group. We derive the effective theory to describe the topo…

We study the Heisenberg-Kitaev chain in order to uncover the interplay between two qualitatively different integrable points in the physics of heat transport in one dimension. Focusing on high temperatures and using analytical as well as numerical approaches within linear response theory, we explore several directions in parameter space including exchange-coupling ratios, anisotropies, and external magnetic fields. We show the emergence of purely ballistic energy transport at all integrable points, manifest in pronounced Drude weights and low-frequency suppression of regular-conductivity contr…
A minimal Kitaev-Gamma model has been recently investigated to understand various Kitaev systems. In the one-dimensional Kitaev-Gamma chain, an emergent SU(2)$_1$ phase and a rank-1 spin ordered phase with $O_h\rightarrow D_4$ symmetry breaking were identified using non-Abelian bosonization and numerical techniques. However, puzzles near the antiferromagnetic Kitaev region with finite Gamma interaction remained unresolved. Here we focus on this parameter region and find that there are two new phases, namely, a rank-1 ordered phase with an $O_h\rightarrow D_3$ symmetry breaking, and a peculiar …

Machine learning is becoming widely used in analyzing the thermodynamics of many-body condensed matter systems. Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) aided Monte Carlo simulations have sparked interest recently, as they manage to speed up classical Monte Carlo simulations. Here we employ the Convolutional Restricted Boltzmann Machine (CRBM) method and show that its use helps to reduce the number of parameters to be learned drastically by taking advantage of translation invariance. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to train the CRBM at smaller lattice sizes, and apply it to larger lattice s…
We theoretically study a Kitaev chain with a quasiperiodic potential, where the quasiperiodicity is introduced by a Fibonacci sequence. Based on an analysis of the Majorana zero-energy mode, we find the critical $p$-wave superconducting pairing potential separating a topological phase and a non-topological phase. The topological phase diagram with respect to Fibonacci potentials follow a self-similar fractal structure characterized by the box-counting dimension, which is an example of the interplay of fractal and topology like the Hofstadter's butterfly in quantum Hall insulators.
We calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the generalized spin-$1/2$ compass spin chain using the density matrix renormalization group. The model, also known as the twisted Kitaev spin chain, was recently proposed to be relevant for the description of the spin chain compound CoNb$_2$O$_6$. It features bond-dependent interactions and interpolates between an Ising chain and a one-dimensional variant of Kitaev's honeycomb spin model. The structure factor, in turn, is found to interpolate from gapped and non-dispersive in the Ising limit to gapless with non-trivial continua in the Kitaev…
Kitaev chain model with nearest neighbor interaction U is solved exactly at the symmetry point $Δ=t$ and chemical potential $μ=0$ in open boundary condition. By applying two Jordan-Wigner transformations and a spin-rotation, such a symmetric interacting model is mapped to a non-interacting fermion model, which can be diagonalized exactly. The solutions include topologically non-trivial phase at $|U|<t$ and topologically trivial phase at $|U|>t$. The two phases are related by dualities. Quantum phase transitions in the model are studied with the help of the exact solution.
We identify and discuss the ground state of a quantum magnet on a triangular lattice with bond-dependent Ising-type spin couplings, that is, a triangular analog of the Kitaev honeycomb model. The classical ground-state manifold of the model is spanned by decoupled Ising-type chains, and its accidental degeneracy is due to the frustrated nature of the anisotropic spin couplings. We show how this subextensive degeneracy is lifted by a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism and study the quantum selection of the ground state by treating short-wavelength fluctuations within the linked cluster expansi…
We present numerical evidence for the presence of a finite-temperature ($T$) phase transition separating paramagnet and quantum spin liquid in a three-dimensional variant of the Kitaev model defined on a hyperhoneycomb lattice in the limit of strong anisotropy; the model is mapped onto an effective Ising-type model, where elementary excitations consist of closed loops of flipped Ising-type variables. Analyzing this effective model by Monte Carlo simulation, we find a phase transition from quantum spin liquid to paramagnet at a finite critical temperature $T_c$. We also compute the magnetic pro…
We study the ground state of the 1D Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos exact diagonalization methods. We obtain a rich ground-state phase diagram as a function of the ratio between Heisenberg ($J=\cosϕ)$ and Kitaev ($K=\sinϕ$) interactions. Depending on the ratio, the system exhibits four long-range ordered states: ferromagnetic-$z$ , ferromagnetic-$xy$, staggered-$xy$, Néel-$z$, and two liquid states: Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and spiral-$xy$. The two Kitaev points $ϕ=\fracπ{2}$ and $ϕ=\frac{3π}{2}$ are singular. The $ϕ$-dependent phase dia…
A central question on Kitaev materials is the effects of additional couplings on the Kitaev model which is proposed to be a candidate for realizing topological quantum computations. However, two spatial dimension typically suffers the difficulty of lacking controllable approaches. In this work, using a combination of powerful analytical and numerical methods available in one dimension, we perform a comprehensive study on the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the spin-1/2 Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model in its full parameter space. A strikingly rich phase diagram is found with nine di…
Recently there has been a renewed interest in properties of the higher-spin Kitaev models, especially their low-dimensional analogues with additional interactions. These quasi-1D systems exhibit rich phase diagrams with symmetry-protected topological phases, Luttinger liquids, hidden order, and higher-rank magnetism. However, the nature of the pure spin-$S$ Kitaev chains are not yet fully understood. Earlier works found a unique ground state with short-ranged correlations for $S = 1$, and an intriguing double-peak structure in the heat capacity associated with an entropy plateau. To understand…
We study analytically a modified dimerized Kitaev chain model under both periodic and open boundary conditions and determine its phase diagram by calculating the topological number and edge correlation functions of Majorana fermions. We explicitly give analytical solutions for eigenstates of the model under open boundary conditions, which permit us to calculate two introduced edge correlation functions of Majorana fermions analytically. Our results indicate that the two edge correlation functions can be used to characterize the trivial, Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-like topological and topological sup…
The Ising chain in transverse field is a paradigmatic model for a host of physical phenomena, including spontaneous symmetry breaking, topological defects, quantum criticality, and duality. Although the quasi-1D ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ has been put forward as the best material example of the transverse field Ising model, it exhibits significant deviations from ideality. Through a combination of THz spectroscopy and theory, we show that CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in fact is well described by a different model with strong bond dependent interactions, which we dub the {\it twisted Kitaev chain}, as these in…
We study the Kitaev spin ladder with random couplings by using the real-space renormalization group technique. This model is the minimum model in Kitaev systems that has conserved plaquette fluxes, and its quasi-one-dimensional geometry makes it possible to study the strong-disorder fixed points for both spin- and flux- excitation gaps. In the Ising limit, the behavior of the spin gap is consistent with the familiar random transverse-field Ising chain, but the flux gap is dominated by the y-coupling. In the XX limit, while the x- and y-couplings are renormalized simultaneously, the z-couplings…
Recently, in the Luttinger liquid phase of the one-dimensional generalized antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin-1/2 model, it has been found that the abelian bosonization formulas of the local spin operators only respect the exact discrete nonsymmorphic symmetry group of the model, not the emergent U(1) symmetry. In this work, we perform a renormalization group (RG) study to provide explanations for the origin of the U(1) breaking terms in the bosonization formulas. We find that the lack of U(1) symmetry originates from the wavefunction renormalization effects in the spin operators along the RG flow …

We present a reentrant phase transition in a bridging model between two different topological models: Kitaev and Haldane chains. This model is activated by introducing a bond alternation into the Kitaev chain [A. Yu Kitaev, Phys.-Usp. {\bf 44} 131 (2001)]. Without the bond alternation, finite pairing potential induces a topological state defined by zero-energy Majorana edge mode, while finite bond alternation without the pairing potential makes a different topological state similar to the Haldane state, which is defined by local Berry phase in the bulk. The topologically-ordered state correspo…
The honeycomb $K-Γ$ model is known to have both deconfined spin liquid and confined phases. We study here a confinement transition between the Kitaev spin liquid and a dimerized phase in the limit of strong bond anisotropy. By partially projecting out Majorana states we are able to map the model onto a model of weakly coupled Ising chains in a transverse field. Within this mapping the ordered Ising phase corresponds to the condensation of $Z_2$ fluxes, or confinement. Our results may improve our understanding of the extensively studied spin liquid candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$, where $K-Γ$ i…
The bond-dependent Ising interaction present in the Kitaev model has attracted considerable attention. The appearance of an unexpected intermediate phase under a magnetic field is particularly intriguing, and one may wonder if a similar phase occurs in the Kitaev spin chain with alternating $x$- and $y$-bond Ising interactions. Previous studies have focused on a transverse field, $h_z$, and reported a direct transition to the polarized state. Here, we investigate phases with arbitrary angle of two longitudinal fields, $h_x$ and $h_y$. For a magnetic field applied along the diagonal, $h_x$=$h_y…
The topological non-triviality of insulating phases of matter is by now well understood through topological K-theory where the indices of the Dirac operators are assembled into topological classes. We consider in the context of the Kitaev chain a notion of a generalized Dirac operator where the associated Clifford algebra is centrally extended. We demonstrate that the central extension is achieved via taking rational operator powers of Pauli matrices that appear in the corresponding BdG Hamiltonian. Doing so introduces a pseudo-metallic component to the topological phase diagram within which t…
The one dimensional closed interacting Kitaev chain and the dimerized version are studied. The topological invariants in terms of Green's function are calculated by the density matrix renormalization group method and the exact diagonalization method. For the interacting Kitaev chain, we point out that the calculation of topological invariant in the charge density wave phase must consider the dimerized configuration of the ground states. The variation of topological invariant are attributed to the poles of eigenvalues of the zero-frequency Green's functions. For the interacting dimerized Kitaev…
An attempt is made to quantum simulate the topological classification, such as winding number, geometric phase and symmetry properties for a quantum simulated Kitaev chain. We find, α (ratio between the spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field) and the range of momentum space of consideration, which plays a crucial role for the topological classification. We show explicitly that the topological quantum phase transition does not occurs at k = 0 limit for the quantum simulated Kitaev chain. We observe that the quasi-particle mass of the Majorana mode plays the significant role in topological quant…
Recent observations of novel spin-orbit coupled states have generated tremendous interest in $4d/5d$ transition metal systems. A prime example is the $J_{\text{eff}}=\frac{1}{2}$ state in iridate materials and $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ that drives Kitaev interactions. Here, by tuning the competition between spin-orbit interaction ($λ_{\text{SOC}}$) and trigonal crystal field splitting ($Δ_\text{T}$), we restructure the spin-orbital wave functions into a novel $μ=\frac{1}{2}$ state that drives Ising interactions. This is done via a topochemical reaction that converts Li$_{2}$RhO$_{3}$ to Ag$_{3}$LiRh$_{2}…
We compute the energy diffusion constant $D$, Lyapunov time $τ_{\text{L}}$ and butterfly velocity $v_{\text{B}}$ in an inhomogeneous chain of coupled Majorana Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models in the large $N$ and strong coupling limit. We find $D\le v_{\text{B}}^2 τ_{\text{L}}$ from a combination of analytical and numerical approaches. Our example necessitates the sharpening of postulated transport bounds based on quantum chaos.
We study the combined effect of interactions and disorder on topological order in one dimension. To this end we consider a generalized Kitaev chain including fermion-fermion interactions and disorder in the chemical potential. We determine the phase diagram by performing density-matrix renormalization group calculations on the corresponding spin-1/2 chain. We find that moderate disorder or repulsive interactions individually stabilize the topological order, which remains valid for their combined effect. However, both repulsive and attractive interactions lead to a suppression of the topologica…
The fermionic and bosonic zero modes of the 1D interacting Kitaev chain at the symmetric point are unveiled. The many-body structures of the Majorana zero modes in the topological region are given explicitly by carrying out perturbation expansion up to infinite order. We also give the analytic expressions of the bosonic zero modes in the topologically trivial phase. Our results are generalized to the hybrid fermion system comprised of the interacting Kitaev model and the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, in which we show that these two types of zero modes can coexist in certain region of its phase d…
While phase transitions between magnetic analogs of three states of matter --- a long-range ordered state, paramagnet, and spin liquid --- have been extensively studied, the possibility of "liquid-liquid" transitions, namely, between different spin liquids, remains elusive. By introducing the additional Ising coupling into the honeycomb Kitaev model with bond asymmetry, we discover that the Kitaev spin liquid turns into a spin-nematic quantum paramagnet before a magnetic order is established by the Ising coupling. The quantum phase transition between the two liquid states accompanies a topolog…
