A minimal Kitaev-Gamma model has been recently investigated to understand various Kitaev systems. In the one-dimensional Kitaev-Gamma chain, an emergent SU(2)$_1$ phase and a rank-1 spin ordered phase with $O_h\rightarrow D_4$ symmetry breaking were identified using non-Abelian bosonization and numerical techniques. However, puzzles near the antiferromagnetic Kitaev region with finite Gamma interaction remained unresolved. Here we focus on this parameter region and find that there are two new phases, namely, a rank-1 ordered phase with an $O_h\rightarrow D_3$ symmetry breaking, and a peculiar Kitaev phase. Remarkably, the $O_h\rightarrow D_3$ symmetry breaking corresponds to the classical magnetic order, but appears in a region very close to the antiferromagnetic Kitaev point where the quantum fluctuations are presumably very strong. In addition, a two-step symmetry breaking $O_h\rightarrow D_{3d}\rightarrow D_3$ is numerically observed as the length scale is increased: At short and intermediate length scales, the system behaves as having a rank-2 spin nematic order with $O_h\rightarrow D_{3d}$ symmetry breaking; and at long distances, time reversal symmetry is further broken leading to the $O_h\rightarrow D_3$ symmetry breaking. Finally, there is no numerical signature of spin orderings nor Luttinger liquid behaviors in the Kitaev phase whose nature is worth further studies.
We theoretically propose a family of $f$-electron based magnets that realizes Kitaev-type bond-dependent anisotropic interactions. Based on {\it ab initio} calculations, we show that $A_2$PrO$_3$ ($A$: alkali metals) crystalize in a triclinic structure with honeycomb layers of edge-sharing PrO$_6$ octahedra. Each Pr$^{4+}$ cation has a $4f$ electron in the $Γ_7$ doublet, which comprises a spin-orbital entangled Kramers pair with the effective moment $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$. By using the Wannier orbitals from the {\it ab initio} calculations, we find that the effective interactions between the $J_{\r…
Magnetic fields can give rise to a plethora of phenomena in Kitaev spin systems, such as the formation of non-trivial spin liquids in two and three spatial dimensions. For the original honeycomb Kitaev model, it has recently been observed that the sign of the bond-directional exchange is of crucial relevance for the field-induced physics, with antiferromagnetic couplings giving rise to an intermediate spin liquid regime between the low-field gapped Kitaev spin liquid and the high-field polarized state, which is not present in the ferromagnetically coupled model. Here, by employing a Majorana m…
By using the variational Monte Carlo method, we study the magnetization process of the Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field. Our trial wavefunction is a generalized Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer wave function with the Jastrow correlation factor, which exactly describes the ground state of the Kitaev model at zero magnetic field using the Jordan-Wigner (JW) transformation. We find that two phase transitions occur for the antiferromagnetic Kitaev coupling, while only one phase transition occurs for the ferromagnetic Kitaev coupling. For the antiferromagnetic Kitaev coupling, we also find that …
Recently, in the Luttinger liquid phase of the one-dimensional generalized antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin-1/2 model, it has been found that the abelian bosonization formulas of the local spin operators only respect the exact discrete nonsymmorphic symmetry group of the model, not the emergent U(1) symmetry. In this work, we perform a renormalization group (RG) study to provide explanations for the origin of the U(1) breaking terms in the bosonization formulas. We find that the lack of U(1) symmetry originates from the wavefunction renormalization effects in the spin operators along the RG flow …
The global phase diagram of a doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model is studied using an SU(2) slave-boson mean-field method. Near the Kitaev limit, p-wave superconducting states which break the time-reversal symmetry are stabilized as reported by You {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 86}, 085145 (2012)] irrespective of the sign of the Kitaev interaction. By further doping, a d-wave superconducting state appears when the Kitaev interaction is antiferromagnetic, while another p-wave superconducting state appears when the Kitaev interaction is ferromagnetic. This p-wave superconducting state does not break…
We investigate the non-Abelian topological chiral spin liquid phase in the two-dimensional (2D) Kitaev honeycomb model subject to a magnetic field. By combining density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization (ED) we study the energy spectra, entanglement, topological degeneracy, and expectation values of Wilson loop operators, allowing for robust characterization. While the ferromagnetic (FM) Kitaev spin liquid is already destroyed by a weak magnetic field with Zeeman energy $H_*^\text{FM} \approx 0.02$, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin liquid remains robust up to a magn…
We compute the low-energy excitation spectrum and the dynamical spin structure factor of the Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model through a variational approach based on the exact fractionalized excitations of the pure Kitaev honeycomb model. This novel approach reveals the physical reason for the asymmetric stability of the Kitaev spin liquid phases around the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev limits. Moreover, we demonstrate that the fractionalized excitations form bound states in specific regions of each Kitaev spin liquid phase and that certain phase transitions induced by Heisenberg and…
Finding new materials with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev interaction is an urgent issue to broaden and enrich the quantum magnetism research significantly. By carrying out inelastic neutron scattering experiments and subsequent analysis, we conclude that Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ are new honeycomb cobalt-based AFM Kitaev systems. The spin-orbit excitons at 20-28~meV in both compounds strongly supports the idea that Co$^{2+}$ ions of both compounds have a spin-orbital entangled $J_\rm{eff}=1/2$ state. Furthermore, we found that a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian can …
We study a spin model on honeycomb lattice with two types of Heisenberg exchange couplings, $J$ and $\tilde J$, where $J$ is for the conventional spin and and $\tilde J$ for rotated spin. When $\tilde J=0$, this is the conventional Heisenberg model. When J=0, the system is either in a stripy antiferromagnetic order($\tilde J<0$, ferromagnetic for rotated spin) or a zig-zag antiferromagnetic order ($\tilde J>0$, antiferromagnetic for rotated spin). The competition between two ferromagnetic orders or two antiferromagnetic orders induces Kitaev's spin liquid phase characterized by the exactly sol…
A bond-directional anisotropic exchange interaction, called the Kitaev interaction, is a promising route to realize quantum spin liquids. The Kitaev interactions were found in Mott insulators with the strong spin-orbit coupling, in the presence of quantum interference between indirect electron transfers. Here we theoretically propose a different scenario by introducing a polar structural asymmetry that unbalances the quantum interference. We show that the imbalance activates additional exchange processes and gives rise to a dominant antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction, in stark contrast to th…

The Kitaev honeycomb model hosts a fascinating fractionalized state of matter featuring emergent Majorana fermions and a vison particle that carries the flux of an emergent gauge field. In the exactly solvable model these visons are static but certain perturbations can induce their motion. We show that the nature of the vison motion induced by a Zeeman field is sharply distinct in the ferromagnetic vs the antiferromagnetic Kitaev models. Namely, in the ferromagnetic model the vison has a trivial non-projective translational symmetry, whereas in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model it has a proje…
The Kitaev model is a rare example of an analytically solvable and physically instantiable Hamiltonian yielding a topological quantum spin liquid ground state. Here we report signatures of Kitaev spin liquid physics in the honeycomb magnet $Li_3Co_2SbO_6$, built of high-spin $\it{d^7}$ ($Co^{2+}$) ions, in contrast to the more typical low-spin $\it{d^5}$ electron configurations in the presence of large spin-orbit coupling. Neutron powder diffraction measurements, heat capacity, and magnetization studies support the development of a long-range antiferromagnetic order space group of $\it{C_C}2/\…
In this work, we analyze the nonsymmorphic symmetry group structures for a variety of generalized Kitaev spin chains and ladders with bond alternations, including Kitaev-Gamma chain, Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma chain, beyond nearest neighbor interactions, and two-leg spin ladders. The symmetry analysis is applied to determine the symmetry breaking patterns of several magnetically ordered phases in the bond-alternating Kitaev-Gamma spin chains, as well as the dimerization order parameters for spontaneous dimerizations. Our work is useful in understanding the magnetic phases in related models and ma…
A central question on Kitaev materials is the effects of additional couplings on the Kitaev model which is proposed to be a candidate for realizing topological quantum computations. However, two spatial dimension typically suffers the difficulty of lacking controllable approaches. In this work, using a combination of powerful analytical and numerical methods available in one dimension, we perform a comprehensive study on the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the spin-1/2 Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model in its full parameter space. A strikingly rich phase diagram is found with nine di…
We study an extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model including additional anisotropic couplings by using two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization group method. Calculating the gound-state energy, entanglement entropy, and spin-spin correlation functions, we make a phase diagram of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model around spin-liquid phase. We find a zigzag antiferromagnetic phase, a ferromagnetic phase, a 120-degree antiferromagnetic phase, and two kinds of incommensurate phases around the Kitaev spin-liquid phase. Furthermore, we study the entanglement spectrum of the model and find that ent…
We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ model with antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchanges in the strong anisotropic (toric code) limit to understand the phases and the intervening phase transitions between the gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid and the spin-ordered (in the Heisenberg limit) as well as paramagnetic phases (in the pseudo-dipolar, $Γ$, limit). We find that the paramagnetic phase obtained in the large $Γ$ limit has no topological entanglement entropy and is proximate to a gapless critical point of a system described by an equal superposition of differently oriented stacked one-dimensional $Z…
The Kitaev spin liquid, a ground state of the bond-dependent Kitaev model in a honeycomb lattice has been a centre of attraction, since a microscopic theory to realize such an interaction in solid-state materials was discovered. A challenge in real materials though is the presence of the Heisenberg and another bond-dependent Gamma interactions detrimental to the Kitaev spin liquid, and there have been many debates on their relative strengths. Here we offer a strategy to extract the Kitaev interaction out of a full microscopic model by utilizing the symmetries of the Hamiltonian. Two tilted mag…
We investigate the dynamic structure factor of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field by applying perturbative continuous unitary transformations about the high-field limit. One- and two-quasiparticle properties of the dressed elementary spin-flip excitations of the high-field polarized phase are calculated which account for most of the spectral weight in the dynamic structure factor. We discuss the evolution of spectral features in these quasiparticle sectors in terms of one-quasiparticle dispersions, two-quasiparticle continua, the formation of antibound states, and…
A vison is an excitation of the Kitaev spin liquid which carries a $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge flux. While immobile in the pure Kitaev model, it becomes a dynamical degree of freedom in the presence of perturbations. We study an isolated vison in the isotropic Kitaev model perturbed by a small external magnetic field $h$, an offdiagonal exchange interactions $Γ$ and a Heisenberg coupling $J$. In the ferromagnetic Kitaev model, the dressed vison obtains a dispersion linear in $Γ$ and $h$ and a fully universal low-$T$ mobility, $μ=6 v_m^2/T^{2}$, where $v_m$ is the velocity of Majorana fermions. In cont…

Intensive studies of the interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and electronic correlations in transition metal compounds have recently been undertaken. In particular, $j_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 bands on a honeycomb lattice provide a pathway to realize Kitaev's exactly solvable spin model. However, since current wisdom requires strong atomic SOC to make $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ bands, studies have been limited to iridium oxides. Contrary to this expectation, we demonstrate how Kitaev interactions arise in 4$d$-orbital honeycomb $α$-RuCl$_3$, despite having significantly weaker SOC than the iridium oxid…

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the Kitaev spin-1/2 model with an extra ``$Γ$-term", using analytical, density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods. Two intriguing phases are found. In the gapless phase, although the exact symmetry group of the system is discrete, the low energy theory is described by an emergent SU(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. On the other hand, the spin-spin correlation functions exhibit SU(2) breaking prefactors, even though the exponents and the logarithmic corrections are consistent with the SU(2)$_1$ predicti…
We study the nearest neighboring spin-1/2 Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma ($KJΓ$) model on the honeycomb lattice in the parameter region of ferromagnetic (FM) Kitaev and antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg couplings relevant for honeycomb iridates, using a coupled-chain analysis. Starting from the gapless Luttinger liquid phase of a decoupled $KJΓ$ chain, the inter-chain interactions in the two-dimensional model is treated within a self-consistent mean field approach based on the Luttinger liquid theory. In the FM Gamma region, our analysis recovers the reported 120$^\circ$ magnetic order, previously o…
We study quantum disordered ground states of the two dimensional Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the triangular lattice using a Schwinger boson approach. Our aim is to identify and characterize potential gapped quantum spin liquid phases that are stabilized by anisotropic Kitaev interactions. For antiferromagnetic Heisenberg- and Kitaev couplings and sufficiently small spin $S$ we find three different symmetric $Z_2$ spin liquid phases, separated by two continuous quantum phase transitions. Interestingly, the gap of elementary excitations remains finite throughout the transitions. The first spin li…
In this work, we investigate the microscopic nature of the magnetism in honeycomb iridium-based systems by performing a systematic study of how the effective magnetic interactions in these compounds depend on various electronic microscopic parameters. We show that the minimal model describing the magnetism in A$_2$IrO$_3$ includes both isotropic and anisotropic Kitaev-type spin-exchange interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbor Ir ions, and that the magnitude of the Kitaev interaction between next-nearest neighbor Ir magnetic moments is comparable with nearest neighbor interaction…
We explore with exact diagonalization the propagation of a single hole in four magnetic phases of the t-J-like Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice: the Neel antiferromagnetic, stripe, zigzag and Kitaev spin-liquid phase. We find coherent propagation of spin-polaron quasiparticles in the antiferromagnetic phase by a similar mechanism as in the $t$-$J$ model for high-$T_c$ cuprates. In the stripe and zigzag phases clear quasiparticles features appear in spectral functions of those propagators where holes are created and annihilated on one sublattice, while they remain largely {\it hid…
The bond-dependent Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice with anyonic excitations has recently attracted considerable attention. However, in solid state materials other spin interactions are present, and among such additional interactions, the off-diagonal symmetric Gamma interaction, another type of bond-dependent term, has been particularly challenging to fully understand. A minimal Kitaev-Gamma (KG) model has been investigated by various numerical techniques under a magnetic field, but definite conclusions about field-induced spin liquids remain elusive and one reason may lie in the limited…
We address the following important question: how to distinguish Kitaev models experimentally realized on small lattices from other non-topological interacting spin models. Based on symmetry arguments and exact diagonalization, we show that a particularly characteristic pattern of spin-spin correlations survives despite finite size, open boundary and thermal effects. The pattern is robust against small residual perturbing interactions and can be utilized to distinguish the Kitaev interactions from other interactions such as antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions. The effect of external magne…
The Kitaev model is an exactly solvable quantum spin model within the language of the constrained real fermions. In spite of numerous studies along special magnetic-field orientations, there is a limited amount of knowledge on the complete field-angle characterization, which can provide valuable information on the existence of fractionalized excitations. For this purpose, we first extend previous studies on the field-angle response of the ferromagnetic Kitaev model to its antiferromagnetic version. Yet, the realistic description of the candidate Kitaev materials, within the edge-sharing octahe…
Cobaltates with 3$d$ based layered honeycomb structure were recently proposed as Kitaev magnets and putative candidates to host the long-sought Kitaev spin liquid. Here we present inelastic neutron scattering results down to 50 mK for powder samples of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, with high resolution in regions of low momentum and energy transfers. We compare the experimental data below the antiferromagnetic zigzag ordering temperature with dynamical structure factors obtained within spin wave theory. We search the wide parameter range of a $K$-$J_1$-$Γ$-$Γ^{\prime}$-$J_3$ spi…
The interplay among anisotropic magnetic terms, such as the bond-dependent Kitaev interactions and single-ion anisotropy, plays a key role in stabilizing the finite-temperature ferromagnetism in the two-dimensional compound $\rm{CrSiTe_3}$. While the Heisenberg interaction is predominant in this material, a recent work shows that it is rather sensitive to the compressive strain, leading to a variety of phases, possibly including a sought-after Kitaev quantum spin liquid [C. Xu, \textit{et. al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{124}, 087205 (2020)]. To further understand these states, we establish the…
The Kitaev spin model offers an exact quantum spin liquid in the ground state, which has stimulated exploration of its material realization over the last decade. Thus far, most of the candidates are found in $4d$- and $5d$-electron compounds, in which the low-spin $d^5$ electron configuration subject to strong spin-orbit coupling comprises a Kramers doublet with the effective angular momentum $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ and gives rise to the bond-dependent anisotropic interactions in the Kitaev model. Here we theoretically investigate other candidates in $4f$-electron compounds with the $f^1$ electron c…
Paramagnetic impurities in a quantum spin-liquid can result in Kondo effects with highly unusual properties. We have studied the effect of locally exchange-coupling a paramagnetic impurity with the spin-1/2 honeycomb Kitaev model in its gapless spin-liquid phase. The (impurity) scaling equations are found to be insensitive to the sign of the coupling. The weak and strong coupling fixed points are stable, with the latter corresponding to a noninteracting vacancy and an interacting, spin-1 defect for the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases respectively. The ground state in the strong coupl…
In the search for quantum spin liquids, candidate materials for the Kitaev model and its extensions have been intensively explored during the past decade, as the models realize the exact quantum spin liquids in the ground state. Thus far, insulating magnets in the low-spin $d^5$ electron configuration under the strong spin-orbit coupling have been studied for realizing the Kitaev-type bond-dependent anisotropic interactions between the spin-orbital entangled Kramers doublets. To extend the candidates, here we investigate the systems in a high-spin $d^7$ electron configuration, whose ground sta…
The ground state of the bilayer Kitaev model with the Heisenberg-type interlayer exchange interaction is investigated by means of the exact diagonalization. Calculating the ground-state energy, local quantity defined on each plaquette, and dynamical spin structure factor, we obtain results suggesting the existence of a quantum phase transition between the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) and dimer singlet states when the interlayer coupling is antiferromagnetic. On the other hand, increasing the ferromagnetic interlayer coupling, there exists no singularity in the physical quantities, suggesti…
In this work, we perform a combination of classical and spin wave analysis on the one-dimensional spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model in the region of an antiferromagnetic Kitaev coupling. Four phases are found, including a Néel ordered phase, a phase with $O_h\rightarrow D_3$ symmetry breaking, and "$D_3$-breaking I, II" phases which both break $D_3$ symmetries albeit in different ways, where $O_h$ is the full octahedral group and $D_3$ is the dihedral group of order six. The lowest-lying spin wave mass is calculated perturbatively in the vicinity of the hidden SU(2) symmetric ferromagneti…
Na$_2$IrO$_3$, a honeycomb 5$d^5$ oxide, has been recently identified as a potential realization of the Kitaev spin lattice. The basic feature of this spin model is that for each of the three metal-metal links emerging out of a metal site, the Kitaev interaction connects only spin components perpendicular to the plaquette defined by the magnetic ions and two bridging ligands. The fact that reciprocally orthogonal spin components are coupled along the three different links leads to strong frustration effects and nontrivial physics. While the experiments indicate zigzag antiferromagnetic order i…
The Kitaev model exhibits a Quantum Spin Liquid hosting emergent fractionalized excitations. We study the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice coupled to a magnetic field along the [111] axis. Utilizing large scale matrix product based numerical models, we confirm three phases with transitions at different field strengths depending on the sign of the Kitaev exchange: a non-abelian topological phase at low fields, an enigmatic intermediate regime only present for antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchange, and a field-polarized phase. For the topological phase, we numerically observe the expected cubic…
The main question we address is how to probe the fractionalized excitations of a quantum spin liquid (QSL), for example, in the Kitaev honeycomb model. By analyzing the energy spectrum and entanglement entropy, for antiferromagnetic couplings and a field along either [111] or [001], we find a gapless QSL phase sandwiched between the non-Abelian Kitaev QSL and polarized phases. Increasing the field strength towards the polarized limit destroys this intermediate QSL phase, resulting in a considerable reduction in the number of frequency modes and the emergence of a beating pattern in the local d…
Motivated by recent reports of a field-induced intermediate phase (IP) in the antiferromagnetic honeycomb Kitaev model that may be a spin liquid whose nature is distinct from the Kitaev Z2 phase, we present a detailed numerical study on the nature and dynamical response (such as dynamical spin-structure factors and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering intensities) of this field-induced IP and neighboring phases in a family of Kitaev-based models related by hidden symmetries and duality transformations. We further show that the same field-induced IP can appear in models relevant for $α$-RuCl${_3…
We investigate how the Kitaev spin liquid state described by Majorana fermions coupled with $Z_2$ gauge fields is affected by non-Kitaev interactions which exist in real candidate materials of the Kitaev magnet. It is found that the off-diagonal exchange interaction referred to as the $Γ'$ term dramatically changes the Majorana band structure in the case of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction, and gives rise to a topological phase transition from a non-Abelian topological phase with the Chern number equal to $\pm 1$ to an Abelian phase with the Chern number equal to $\pm 2$, in which the …
Kitaev-type interactions between neighbouring magnetic moments emerge in the honeycomb material $α$-RuCl3. It is debated however whether these Kitaev interactions are ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. With electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) we study the lowest excitation across the Mott-Hubbard gap, which involves a d4 triplet in the final state and therefore is sensitive to nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations. At low temperature the spectral weight of these triplets is strongly enhanced, in accordance with optical data. We show that the magnetic correlation function that determine…
We derive and study a spin one-half Hamiltonian on a honeycomb lattice describing the exchange interactions between Ir$^{4+}$ ions in a family of layered iridates $A_2$IrO$_3$ ($A$=Li,Na). Depending on the microscopic parameters, the Hamiltonian interpolates between the Heisenberg and exactly solvable Kitaev models. Exact diagonalization and a complementary spin-wave analysis reveal the presence of an extended spin-liquid phase near the Kitaev limit and a conventional Néel state close to the Heisenberg limit. The two phases are separated by an unusual stripy antiferromagnetic state, which is t…
Recent experimental evidence for a field-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) in $α$-RuCl$_3$ calls for an understanding for the ground state of honeycomb Kitaev model under a magnetic field. In this work we address the nature of an enigmatic gapless paramagnetic phase in the antiferromagnetic Kitave model, under an intermediate magnetic field perpendicular to the plane. Combining theoretical and numerical efforts, we identify this gapless phase as a $U(1)$ QSL with spinon Fermi surfaces. We also reveal the nature of continuous quantum phase transitions involving this $U(1)$ QSL, and obtain a pha…
Recent proposals for spin-1 Kitaev materials, such as honeycomb Ni oxides with heavy elements of Bi and Sb, have shown that these compounds naturally give rise to antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev couplings. Conceptual interest in such AFM Kitaev systems has been sparked by the observation of a transition to a gapless $U(1)$ spin liquid at intermediate field strengths in the AFM spin-1/2 Kitaev model. However, all hitherto known spin-1/2 Kitaev materials exhibit ferromagnetic bond-directional exchanges. Here we discuss the physics of the spin-1 Kitaev model in a magnetic field and show, by extens…
We have performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments to investigate the magnetic excitations in the quasi-face-centered-cubic (fcc) iridate double perovskites La2ZnIrO6 and La2MgIrO6, which are characterized by A-type antiferromagnetic ground states. The neutron scattering data, which reveal gapped spin wave excitations with a very weak dispersion, are shown to be well-described by theoretical calculations on a model Hamiltonian with dominant Kitaev interactions. Our surprising finding shows that in contrast to honeycomb materials, where the Kitaev interaction manifests itself via comple…
Due to the combination of a substantial spin-orbit coupling and correlation effects, iridium oxides hold a prominent place in the search for novel quantum states of matter, including, e.g., Kitaev spin liquids and topological Weyl states. We establish the promise of the very recently synthesized hyper-honeycomb iridate $β$-Li2IrO3 in this regard. A detailed theoretical analysis reveals the presence of large ferromagnetic first-neighbor Kitaev interactions, while a second-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange drives the ground state from ferro to zigzag order via a three-dimensional Ki…
Very recently, a 3$d$ based honeycomb cobaltate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has garnered tremendous attention due to the proposed proximity to the Kitaev spin-liquid state as its 4$d$/5$d$ counterparts. Here, we use Zn to substitute Co in a broad range and perform systematic studies on Na$_2$Co$_{2-x}$Zn$_x$TeO$_6$ by structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements, and track the doping evolution of its magnetic ground states. Due to the extremely close radii of Zn$^{2+}$ and high-spin Co$^{2+}$ ions, the substitution can be easily achieved. X-ray diffractions reveal no structural transition but …
The spin S=$\frac{1}{2}$ Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention, since emerging candidate materials have provided a playground to test non-Abelian anyons. The Kitaev model with higher spins has also been theoretically studied, as it may offer another path to a quantum spin liquid. However, a microscopic route to achieve higher spin Kitaev models in solid state materials has not been rigorously derived. Here we present a theory of the spin S=1 Kitaev interaction in two-dimensional edge-shared octahedral systems. Essential ingredients are strong spin-orbit coupling in anions …
We investigate the ground state properties of the spin S=1 Kitaev honeycomb model under a magnetic field based on the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation. With the time reversal symmetry breaking due to the magnetic field, a gapped Kitaev spin liquid is identified for both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev couplings. The topological nature of such Kitaev spin liquid is manifested by the nearly quantized Wilson loop, degeneracy in the entanglement spectra and existence of edge modes. While the FM Kitaev spin liquid is destroyed by a weaker magnetic field …
