Motivated by intense research on two-dimensional spin-1/2 Kitaev materials, Kitaev spin chains and ladders, though geometrically limited, have been studied for their numerical simplicity and insights into extended Kitaev models. The phase diagrams under the magnetic field were also explored for these quasi-one dimensional models. For an isotropic Kitaev chain, it was found that a magnetic field polarizes the ground state except along the symmetric field angle, where the chain is found to remain gapless up to a critical field strength where it enters an intriguing soliton phase before reaching the polarized state at higher field strengths. Here we study an anisotropic Kitaev chain under a magnetic field using the density matrix renormalization group technique, where the ground state has a macroscopic degeneracy with a finite gap in the absence of the magnetic field. When the field is mainly aligned parallel to the strong bond, four-site and large unit-cell ordered phases arise. In a certain angle of the field, another ordered phase characterized by a uniform chirality with six-site periodicity emerges. We employ a perturbation theory to understand such field-induced ordered phases. The effective model uncovers the presence of transverse Ising and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions between unit cells, as well as further-neighbor Ising interaction induced by the magnetic field, which collectively explain the mechanisms behind these ordered states. Open questions and challenges are also discussed.
We investigate magnetic properties in the $S=1$ Kitaev model in the anisotropic limit. Performing the fourth-order perturbation expansion with respect to the $x$-bonds, $y$-bonds, and magnetic field, we derive the effective Hamiltonian, where the low-energy physics should be described by the free spins with an effective magnetic field. Making use of the exact diagonalization method for small clusters, we discuss ground-state properties in the system complementary.
We study low-energy properties of spin-$S$ Kitaev models in an anisotropic limit. The effective form of a local conserved quantity is derived in the low-energy subspace. We find this is the same as that of $S=1/2$ case for the half-integer spins but shows a different form for the integer spins. Applying the perturbation theory to the anisotropic Kitaev model, we obtain the effective Hamiltonian. In the integer spin case, the effective model is equivalent to a free spin model under an uniform magnetic field, where quantum fluctuations are quenched. On the other hand, in the half-integer case, t…
We investigate the quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state of anisotropic Kitaev model with antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling under the $[001]$ magnetic field with the finite-temperature Lanczos method (FTLM). In this anisotropic AFM Kitaev model with $K_{X}=K_{Y}$, $K_{X}+K_{Y}+K_{Z}=-3K$, and $K_{Z}<-K$, with magnetic field increasing, the gapped QSL experiences a transition to a gapless QSL at $h_{c1}=gμ_{B}H_{z1}/K$, to another gapless QSL with $C_{6}$ rotational symmetry at $h_{c2}$, and to a new $U(1)$ gapless QSL between $h_{c3}$ and $h_{c4}$, respectively. These indicate that magnetic fi…
We study the ground state of the 1D Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos exact diagonalization methods. We obtain a rich ground-state phase diagram as a function of the ratio between Heisenberg ($J=\cosϕ)$ and Kitaev ($K=\sinϕ$) interactions. Depending on the ratio, the system exhibits four long-range ordered states: ferromagnetic-$z$ , ferromagnetic-$xy$, staggered-$xy$, Néel-$z$, and two liquid states: Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and spiral-$xy$. The two Kitaev points $ϕ=\fracπ{2}$ and $ϕ=\frac{3π}{2}$ are singular. The $ϕ$-dependent phase dia…
We study a quantum spin Kitaev model with zigzag edges to clarify the effects of anisotropy in the exchange couplings on the spin propagation. We simulate the spin and Majorana dynamics triggered by a magnetic pulse, using the real-space time-dependent Majorana mean-field theory. When the anisotropy is small, the dispersion of the itinerant Majorana fermions remains gapless, where the velocity of the spin propagation matches the group velocity of the itinerant Majorana fermions at the nodal points. On the other hand, in the gapped system with a large anisotropy, the spin propagation is strongl…
We present a study of longitudinal thermal transport in the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice, focusing on the role of anisotropic exchange to cover both, gapless and gapped phases. Employing a complementary combination of exact diagonalization on small systems and an average gauge configuration approach for up to $\sim O(10^4)$ spinful sites, we report results for the dynamical energy current auto-correlation function as well as the dc thermal conductivity over a wide range of temperatures and exchange anisotropies. Despite a pseudogap in the current correlation spectra, induced by e…
The $S=1/2$ Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention as an exactly solvable example with a quantum spin liquid ground state. In a properly oriented external magnetic field, chiral Majorana edge modes associated with a quantized thermal Hall conductance emerge, and a distinct spin-disordered phase appears at intermediate field strengths, below the polarized phase. However, since material realizations of Kitaev magnetism invariably display competing exchange interactions, the stability of these exotic phases with respect to additional couplings is a key issue. Here, we report a…
Recently there has been a renewed interest in properties of the higher-spin Kitaev models, especially their low-dimensional analogues with additional interactions. These quasi-1D systems exhibit rich phase diagrams with symmetry-protected topological phases, Luttinger liquids, hidden order, and higher-rank magnetism. However, the nature of the pure spin-$S$ Kitaev chains are not yet fully understood. Earlier works found a unique ground state with short-ranged correlations for $S = 1$, and an intriguing double-peak structure in the heat capacity associated with an entropy plateau. To understand…
A central question on Kitaev materials is the effects of additional couplings on the Kitaev model which is proposed to be a candidate for realizing topological quantum computations. However, two spatial dimension typically suffers the difficulty of lacking controllable approaches. In this work, using a combination of powerful analytical and numerical methods available in one dimension, we perform a comprehensive study on the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the spin-1/2 Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model in its full parameter space. A strikingly rich phase diagram is found with nine di…
We present the electron tunneling transport and spectroscopic characters of a superconducting {\it Josephson} junction with a barrier of single anisotropic Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) layer. We find that the dynamical spin correlation features are well reflected in the direct-current differential conductance $dI^{c}/dV$ of the single-particle tunneling, including the unique spin gap and dressed itinerant Majorana dispersive band, in addition to an energy shift $2Δ$ of two-lead superconducting gaps. From the spectral characters, we identify different topological quantum phases of the aniso…
We investigate the finite-temperature phase diagram of the classical Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the hexagonal lattice. Due to the anisotropy introduced by the Kitaev interaction, the model is magnetically ordered at low temperatures for all values of parameters at which the model has a discrete symmetry. The ordered phase is stabilized entropically by an order by disorder mechanism where thermal fluctuations of classical spins select collinear magnetic orders in which magnetic moments point along one of the cubic directions. We find that there is an intermediate phase between the low-temperatu…
We study the effects of the flux configurations on the emergent Majorana fermions in the $S=1/2$ Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice, where quantum spins are fractionalized into itinerant Majorana fermions and localized fluxes. A quantum spin liquid appears as the ground state of the Kitaev model in the flux-free sector, which has intensively been investigated so far. In this flux sector, the Majorana fermion system has linear dispersions and shows power law behavior in the Majorana correlations. On the other hand, periodically-arranged flux configurations yield low-energy excitations in the M…

The ruby lattice is a four-valent lattice interpolating between honeycomb and triangular lattices. In this work we investigate the topological spin-liquid phases of a spin Hamiltonian with Kitaev interactions on the ruby lattice using exact diagonalization and perturbative methods. The latter interactions combined with the structure of the lattice yield a model with $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetry. We mapped out the phase digram of the model and found gapped and gapless spin-liquid phases. While the low energy sector of the gapped phase corresponds to the well-known topologic…
The Kitaev model is an exactly-soluble quantum spin model, whose ground state provides a canonical example of a quantum spin liquid. Spin excitations from the ground state are fractionalized into emergent matter fermions and $Z_2$ fluxes. The $Z_2$ flux excitation is pointlike in two dimensions, while it comprises a closed loop in three dimensions because of the local constraint for each closed volume. In addition, the fluxes obey global constraints involving (semi)macroscopic number of fluxes. We here investigate such global constraints in the Kitaev model on a three-dimensional lattice compo…
We study the non-equilibrium slow dynamics for the Kitaev model both in the presence and the absence of disorder. For the case without disorder, we demonstrate, via an exact solution, that the model provides an example of a system with an anisotropic critical point and exhibits unusual scaling of defect density $n$ and residual energy $Q$ for a slow linear quench. We provide a general expression for the scaling of $n$ ($Q$) generated during a slow power-law dynamics, characterized by a rate $τ^{-1}$ and exponent $α$, from a gapped phase to an anisotropic quantum critical point in $d$ dimension…
We discuss the finite-temperature phase diagram of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the hexagonal lattice, which has been suggested to describe the spin-orbital exchange of the effective spin-1/2 momenta in the Mott insulating Iridate Na2IrO3. At zero-temperature this model exhibits magnetically ordered states well beyond the isotropic Heisenberg limit as well as an extended gapless spin liquid phase around the highly anisotropic Kitaev limit. Using a pseudofermion functional renormalization group (RG) approach, we extract both the Curie-Weiss scale and the critical ordering scale (for the magne…
We study critical properties of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice at finite temperatures which might describe the physics of the quasi two-dimensional compounds, Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$. The model undergoes two phase transitions as a function of temperature. At low temperature, thermal fluctuations induce magnetic long-range order by order-by-disorder mechanism. Magnetically ordered state with the spontaneously broken $Z_6$ symmetry persists up to a certain critical temperature. We find that there is an intermediate phase between the low-temperature ordered phase and…
We study an extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model including additional anisotropic couplings by using two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization group method. Calculating the gound-state energy, entanglement entropy, and spin-spin correlation functions, we make a phase diagram of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model around spin-liquid phase. We find a zigzag antiferromagnetic phase, a ferromagnetic phase, a 120-degree antiferromagnetic phase, and two kinds of incommensurate phases around the Kitaev spin-liquid phase. Furthermore, we study the entanglement spectrum of the model and find that ent…
We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ model with antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchanges in the strong anisotropic (toric code) limit to understand the phases and the intervening phase transitions between the gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid and the spin-ordered (in the Heisenberg limit) as well as paramagnetic phases (in the pseudo-dipolar, $Γ$, limit). We find that the paramagnetic phase obtained in the large $Γ$ limit has no topological entanglement entropy and is proximate to a gapless critical point of a system described by an equal superposition of differently oriented stacked one-dimensional $Z…
We study the quantum spin liquid phase in a variant of the Kitaev model where the bonds of the honeycomb lattice are distributed in a Kekulé pattern. The system supports gapped and gapless Z_2 quantum spin liquids with interesting differences from the original Kitaev model, the most notable being a gapped Z_2 spin liquid on a Kagome lattice. Perturbing the exactly solvable model with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg perturbations, we find a magnetically ordered phase stabilized by a quantum `order by disorder' mechanism, as well as an exotic continuous phase transition between the topological spin…

Using quantum chemistry calculations we shed fresh light on the electronic structure and magnetic properties of RuCl3, a proposed realization of the honeycomb Kitaev spin model. It is found that the nearest-neighbor Kitaev exchange K is weaker than in 5d5 Ir oxides but still larger than other effective spin couplings. The electronic-structure computations also indicate a ferromagnetic K in the halide, which is supported by a detailed analysis of the field-dependent magnetization. From exact-diagonalization calculations for extended Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonians we additionally find that a tra…
A minimal Kitaev-Gamma model has been recently investigated to understand various Kitaev systems. In the one-dimensional Kitaev-Gamma chain, an emergent SU(2)$_1$ phase and a rank-1 spin ordered phase with $O_h\rightarrow D_4$ symmetry breaking were identified using non-Abelian bosonization and numerical techniques. However, puzzles near the antiferromagnetic Kitaev region with finite Gamma interaction remained unresolved. Here we focus on this parameter region and find that there are two new phases, namely, a rank-1 ordered phase with an $O_h\rightarrow D_3$ symmetry breaking, and a peculiar …
We introduce a matrix-product state based method to efficiently obtain dynamical response functions for two-dimensional microscopic Hamiltonians, which we apply to different phases of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model. We find significant broad high energy features beyond spin-wave theory even in the ordered phases proximate to spin liquids. This includes the phase with zig-zag order of the type observed in $α$-RuCl$_3$, where we find high energy features like those seen in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Our results provide an example of a natural path for proximate spin liquid features t…
We discuss magnetically ordered states, arising in Heisenberg-Kitaev and related spin models, on three-dimensional (3D) harmonic honeycomb lattices. For large classes of ordered states, we show that they can be mapped onto two-dimensional (2D) counterparts on the honeycomb lattice, with the classical energetics being identical in the 2D and 3D cases. As an example, we determine the phase diagram of the classical nearest-neighbor Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the hyperhoneycomb lattice in a magnetic field: This displays rich and complex behavior akin to its 2D counterpart, with most phases and pha…
The Kitaev model, whose ground state is a quantum spin liquid (QSL), was originally conceived for spin $S=1/2$ moments on a honeycomb lattice. In recent years, the model has been extended to higher $S$ from both theoretical and experimental interests, but the stability of the QSL ground state has not been systematically clarified for general $S$, especially in the presence of other additional interactions, which inevitably exist in candidate materials. Here we study the spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg models by using an extension of the pseudofermion functional renormalization group method to gener…
The so-called "Kitaev candidate" materials based on $4d^5$ and $5d^5$ metals have recently emerged as magnetic systems displaying strongly anisotropic exchange interactions reminiscent of the Kitaev's honeycomb model. Recently, these materials have been shown to commonly display a distinct saw-tooth angular dependence of the magnetic torque over a wide range of magnetic fields. While higher order chiral spin interactions have been considered as a source of this observation, we show here that bilinear anisotropic interactions and/or $g$-anisotropy are each sufficient to explain the observed tor…
Inelastic light scattering studies on single crystals of (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_x$)$_2$IrO$_3$ ($x = 0, 0.05$ and $0.15$) show a polarization independent broad band at $\sim $~2750 cm$^{-1}$ with a large band-width $\sim 1800$~cm$^{-1}$. For Na$_2$IrO$_3$ the broad band is seen for temperatures $ \leq 200$~K and persists inside the magnetically ordered state. For Li doped samples, the intensity of this mode increases, shifts to lower wave-numbers and persists to higher temperatures. Such a mode has recently been predicted (Knolle et.al.) as a signature of the Kitaev spin liquid. We assign the observat…
We study quantum disordered ground states of the two dimensional Heisenberg-Kitaev model on the triangular lattice using a Schwinger boson approach. Our aim is to identify and characterize potential gapped quantum spin liquid phases that are stabilized by anisotropic Kitaev interactions. For antiferromagnetic Heisenberg- and Kitaev couplings and sufficiently small spin $S$ we find three different symmetric $Z_2$ spin liquid phases, separated by two continuous quantum phase transitions. Interestingly, the gap of elementary excitations remains finite throughout the transitions. The first spin li…
Rare-earth chalcohalide REChX (RE = rare earth; Ch = O, S, Se, Te; X = F, Cl, Br, I) is a newly reported family of Kitaev spin liquid candidates. The family offers a platform where a strong spin-orbit coupling meets a van der Waals layered and undistorted honeycomb spin lattice, which outputs highly anisotropic exchange couplings required by the Kitaev model. YbOCl is the first single crystal of the family we grew, with a size up to ~ 15 mm. We have performed magnetization and high magnetic field electron spin resonance measurements from 2 to 300 K. We develop the mean-field scenario for the a…
In this work, we investigate the microscopic nature of the magnetism in honeycomb iridium-based systems by performing a systematic study of how the effective magnetic interactions in these compounds depend on various electronic microscopic parameters. We show that the minimal model describing the magnetism in A$_2$IrO$_3$ includes both isotropic and anisotropic Kitaev-type spin-exchange interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbor Ir ions, and that the magnitude of the Kitaev interaction between next-nearest neighbor Ir magnetic moments is comparable with nearest neighbor interaction…

In this work, we analyze the nonsymmorphic symmetry group structures for a variety of generalized Kitaev spin chains and ladders with bond alternations, including Kitaev-Gamma chain, Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma chain, beyond nearest neighbor interactions, and two-leg spin ladders. The symmetry analysis is applied to determine the symmetry breaking patterns of several magnetically ordered phases in the bond-alternating Kitaev-Gamma spin chains, as well as the dimerization order parameters for spontaneous dimerizations. Our work is useful in understanding the magnetic phases in related models and ma…
We study the spin-$1/2$ ferromagnetic Heisenberg-Kitaev-$Γ$ model in the anisotropic (Toric code) limit to reveal the nature of the quantum phase transition between the gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid and a spin ordered phase (driven by Heisenberg interactions) as well as a trivial paramagnet (driven by pseudo-dipolar interactions, $Γ$). The transitions are obtained by a simultaneous condensation of the Ising electric and magnetic charges-- the fractionalized excitations of the $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid. Both these transitions can be continuous and are examples of deconfined quantum critical …
With the advancement in synthesizing and analyzing Kitaev materials, the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice has attracted a lot of attention in the last few years. Several variations, which include additional anisotropic interactions as well as response to external magnetic field, have been investigated and many exotic ordered phases have been discussed. On the other hand, quantum spin systems are proving to be a fertile ground to realize and study bosonic analogues of fermionic topological states of matter. Using the spin-wave theory we show that the ferromagnetic phase of the e…
The magnetic insulator $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a promising candidate to realize Kitaev interactions on a quasi-2D honeycomb lattice. We perform extensive susceptibility measurements on single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, including angle-dependence of the in-plane longitudinal and transverse susceptibilities, which reveal a unidirectional anisotropy within the honeycomb plane. By comparing the experimental results to a high-temperature expansion of a Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ spin Hamiltonian with bond anisotropy, we find excellent agreement with the observed phase shift and periodicity of the angle-resol…
We consider the quasi-two-dimensional pseudo-spin-1/2 Kitaev - Heisenberg model proposed for A2IrO3 (A=Li, Na) compounds. The spin-wave excitation spectrum, the sublattice magnetization, and the transition temperatures are calculated in the random phase approximation (RPA) for four different ordered phases, observed in the parameter space of the model: antiferomagnetic, stripe, ferromagnetic, and zigzag phases. The Néel temperature and temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization are compared with the experimental data on Na2IrO3.
In the pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ honeycomb Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling, there are two types of bond-dependent exchange interactions, named Kitaev ($K$) and $Γ$, leading to strong frustration. While the ground state of the Kitaev model is a quantum spin liquid with fractionalized excitations, the ground state of the $Γ$ model remains controversial. In particular, the phase diagram of the $KΓ$ model with ferromagnetic $K$ and antiferromagnetic $Γ$ interactions has been intensively studied because of its relevance to candidate materials such as $α$-RuCl$_{3}$. Numerical studies…
Motivated by the recent experimental observation of a Mott insulating state for the layered Iridate Na2IrO3, we discuss possible ordering states of the effective Iridium moments in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic field. For a field pointing in the [111] direction - perpendicular to the hexagonal lattice formed by the Iridium moments - we find that a combination of Heisenberg and Kitaev exchange interactions gives rise to a rich phase diagram with both symmetry breaking magnetically ordered phases as well as a topologically ordered phase that is stable over a small ran…
Honeycomb iridates are thought to have strongly spin-anisotropic exchange interactions that could lead to an extraordinary state of matter known as the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. The realization of this state requires almost perfectly frustrated interactions between the magnetic Ir$^{4+}$ ions, but small imbalances in energy make other ordered states more favorable. Indeed, the closeness in energy of these ordered states is itself a signature of the intrinsic frustration in the system. In this work, we illustrate that small magnetic fields can be employed to drive the frustrated quantum magne…
A Kitaev-Heisenberg-J2-J3 model is proposed to describe the Mott-insulating layered iridates A2IrO3 (A=Na,Li). The model is a combination of the Kitaev honeycomb model and the Heisenberg model with all three nearest neighbor couplings J1, J2 and J3. A rich phase diagram is obtained at the classical level, including the experimentally suggested zigzag ordered phase; as well as the stripy phase, which extends from the Kitaev-Heisenberg limit to the J1-J2-J3 one. Combining the experimentally observed spin order with the optimal fitting to the uniform magnetic susceptibility data gives an estimate…
Magnetic properties of the substitution series Ru$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Cl$_3$ were investigated to determine the evolution from the anisotropic Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ with $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ magnetic Ru$^{3+}$ ions to the isotropic Heisenberg magnet CrCl$_3$ with $S = 3/2$ magnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions. Magnetization measurements on single crystals revealed a reversal of the magnetic anisotropy under doping, which we argue to arise from the competition between anisotropic Kitaev and off-diagonal interactions on the Ru-Ru links and approximately isotropic Cr-Ru and isotropic Cr-Cr interactions. In addit…
The leading order nonlinear (NL) susceptibility, $χ_3$, in a paramagnet is negative and diverges as $T \rightarrow 0$. This divergence is destroyed when spins correlate and the NL response provides unique insights into magnetic order. Dimensionality, exchange interaction, and preponderance of quantum effects all imprint their signatures in the NL magnetic response. Here, we study the NL susceptibilities in the proximate Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ which differs from the expected antiferromagnetic behavior. For $T< T_c$ = 7.5 K and field $B$ in the ab-plane, we obtain contrasting NL responses in…
We compute the low-energy excitation spectrum and the dynamical spin structure factor of the Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model through a variational approach based on the exact fractionalized excitations of the pure Kitaev honeycomb model. This novel approach reveals the physical reason for the asymmetric stability of the Kitaev spin liquid phases around the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev limits. Moreover, we demonstrate that the fractionalized excitations form bound states in specific regions of each Kitaev spin liquid phase and that certain phase transitions induced by Heisenberg and…
The magnetic orders in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and $α-$RuCl$_3$, honeycomb systems with strong spin-orbit coupling and correlations, have been recently described by models with the dominant Kitaev interactions. In this work we discuss how the orientation of magnetic order parameter is selected in this class of models. We show that while the order-by-disorder mechanism in the models with solely Kitaev anisotropies always select cubic axes as easy axes for magnetic ordering, the additional effect of other small bond-dependent anisotropies, such as, e.g., $Γ$-terms, lead to a deviation of the order paramet…
In this work, we perform a combination of classical and spin wave analysis on the one-dimensional spin-$S$ Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model in the region of an antiferromagnetic Kitaev coupling. Four phases are found, including a Néel ordered phase, a phase with $O_h\rightarrow D_3$ symmetry breaking, and "$D_3$-breaking I, II" phases which both break $D_3$ symmetries albeit in different ways, where $O_h$ is the full octahedral group and $D_3$ is the dihedral group of order six. The lowest-lying spin wave mass is calculated perturbatively in the vicinity of the hidden SU(2) symmetric ferromagneti…
In the search for quantum spin liquids, candidate materials for the Kitaev model and its extensions have been intensively explored during the past decade, as the models realize the exact quantum spin liquids in the ground state. Thus far, insulating magnets in the low-spin $d^5$ electron configuration under the strong spin-orbit coupling have been studied for realizing the Kitaev-type bond-dependent anisotropic interactions between the spin-orbital entangled Kramers doublets. To extend the candidates, here we investigate the systems in a high-spin $d^7$ electron configuration, whose ground sta…
