We present the electron tunneling transport and spectroscopic characters of a superconducting {\it Josephson} junction with a barrier of single anisotropic Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) layer. We find that the dynamical spin correlation features are well reflected in the direct-current differential conductance $dI^{c}/dV$ of the single-particle tunneling, including the unique spin gap and dressed itinerant Majorana dispersive band, in addition to an energy shift $2Δ$ of two-lead superconducting gaps. From the spectral characters, we identify different topological quantum phases of the anisotropic Kitaev QSL. We also present the zero-voltage {\it Josephson} current $I^{s}$ which displays residual features of the anisotropic Kitaev QSL. These results pave a new way to measure the dynamical spinon or Majorana fermion spectroscopy of the Kitaev and other spin liquid materials.
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes a strongly correlated metal with all-to-all random interactions (average strength $J$) between $N$ fermions (complex Dirac fermions or real Majorana fermions). In the large-$N$ limit a conformal symmetry emerges that renders the model exactly soluble. Here we study how the non-Fermi liquid behavior of the closed system in equilibrium manifests itself in an open system out of equilibrium. We calculate the current-voltage characteristic of a quantum dot, described by the complex-valued SYK model, coupled to a voltage source via a single-channel metalli…
We describe scanning tunneling spectroscopic signatures of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in Kitaev spin liquids. The tunnel conductance is determined by the dynamical spin correlations of the spin liquid, which we compute exactly, and by spin-anisotropic cotunneling form factors. Near a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex, the tunnel conductance has a staircase voltage dependence, where conductance steps arise from MZMs and (at higher voltages) from additional vortex configurations. By scanning the probe tip position, one can detect the vortex locations. Our analysis suggests that topological magnon bound stat…
We present the electron tunneling transport and its magnetic field modulation of a superconducting (SC) Josephson junction with a barrier of single ferromagnetic (FM) Kitaev layer. We find that at H = 0, the Josephson current IS displays two peaks at K/Δ = 3.4 and 10, which stem from the resonant tunnelings between the SC gap boundaries and the spinon flat bands and between the SC gap edges and the spinon dispersive bands, respectively. With the increasing magnetic field, IS gradually decreases and abruptly drops to a platform at the critical magnetic field hc = gμBHc/Δ = 0.03K/Δ, since the ap…
The main question we address is how to probe the fractionalized excitations of a quantum spin liquid (QSL), for example, in the Kitaev honeycomb model. By analyzing the energy spectrum and entanglement entropy, for antiferromagnetic couplings and a field along either [111] or [001], we find a gapless QSL phase sandwiched between the non-Abelian Kitaev QSL and polarized phases. Increasing the field strength towards the polarized limit destroys this intermediate QSL phase, resulting in a considerable reduction in the number of frequency modes and the emergence of a beating pattern in the local d…
It is now well established that the Kitaev honeycomb model in a magnetic field along the $[111]$-direction harbors an intermediate gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase sandwiched between a gapped non-abelian QSL at low fields $H< H_{c1}$ and a partially polarized phase at high fields $H> H_{c2}$. Here, we analyze the low field and high field phases and phase transitions in terms of single- and two-magnon excitations using exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. We find that the energy to create a bound state of two-magnons $Δ_p$ becomes lower than…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes interacting fermionic zero modes in zero spatial dimensions, e.g. quantum dot, with interactions strong enough to completely washout quasiparticle excitations in the infrared. In this paper, we consider the complex-valued SYK model at initial temperature $T$ and chemical potential $μ$ coupled to a large reservoir by a quench at time $t=0$. The reservoir is kept at zero temperature and charge neutrality. We find that the dynamics of the discharging process of the SYK quantum dot reveals a distinctive characteristic of the SYK non-Fermi liquid (nFl) st…
In this letter, we propose a local detection scheme for the Majorana zero mode (MZM) carried by a vison in Kitaev's chiral spin liquid (CSL) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The STM introduces a single Majorana into the system through hole/charge injection and the Majorana interacts with the MZM to form a stable composite object. We derive the exact analytical expression of single-hole Green's function in the Mott insulating limit of Kitaev's model and show that the differential conductance has split peaks, as a consequence of resonant tunneling through the vison-hole composite. The …
Recently considerable excitement has arisen due to the experimental observation of a field-induced spin liquid phase in the compound $α$-RuCl$_3$. However, the nature of this putative spin liquid phase and the relevant microscopic model Hamiltonian remain still unclear. In this work, we address these questions by performing large-scale numerical simulations of a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model proposed to describe the physics of $α$-RuCl$_3$. While there is no evidence for an intermediate phase for in-plane magnetic fields, our results strongly suggest that a stable intermediate spin liqui…
We analyze the properties of the edge states of the one-dimensional Kitaev model with long-range anisotropic pairing and tunneling. Tunneling and pairing are assumed to decay algebraically with exponents $α$ and $β$, respectively, and $α,β>1$. We determine analytically the decay of the edges modes. We show that the decay is exponential for $α=β$ and when the coefficients scaling tunneling and pairing terms are equal. Otherwise, the decay is exponential at sufficiently short distances and then algebraic at the asymptotics. We show that the exponent of the algebraic tail is determined by the sma…
Using inhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory, we argue that the normal-metal proximity effect forces any finite number of "barrier" planes that are described by the (paramagnetic) Hubbard model and sandwiched between semi-infinite metallic leads to always be a Fermi liquid at T=0. This then implies that the inhomogeneous system restores lattice periodicity at zero frequency, has a well-defined Fermi surface, and should display perfect (ballistic) conductivity or "transparency". These results are, however, fragile with respect to finite frequency, V, T, disorder, or magnetism, all of which r…
We examine the spectroscopic signatures of tunneling through a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) barrier in a number of experimentally relevant geometries. We combine contributions from elastic and inelastic tunneling processes and find that spin-flip scattering at the itinerant spinon modes gives rise to a gaped contribution to the tunneling conductance spectrum. We address the spectral modifications that arise in a magnetic field necessary to drive the candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$ into a QSL phase, and we propose a lateral 1D tunnel junction as a viable setup in this regime. The characteri…
Topological spin liquids in two spatial dimensions are stable phases in the presence of a small magnetic field, but may give way to field-induced phenomena at intermediate field strengths. Sandwiched between the low-field spin liquid physics and the high-field spin-polarized phase, the exploration of magnetic phenomena in this intermediate regime however often remains elusive to controlled analytical approaches. Here we numerically study such intermediate-field magnetic phenomena for two representative Kitaev models (on the square-octagon and decorated honeycomb lattice) that exhibit either Ab…
Motivated by recent experiments on the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $α\text{-RuCl}_3$, we introduce time-domain probes of the edge and quasiparticle content of non-Abelian spin liquids. Our scheme exploits ancillary quantum spins that communicate via time-dependent tunneling of energy into and out of the spin liquid's chiral Majorana edge state. We show that the ancillary-spin dynamics reveals the edge-state velocity and, in suitable geometries, detects individual non-Abelian anyons and emergent fermions via a time-domain counterpart of quantum-Hall anyon interferometry. We anticipate applications …
Using the Keldysh formalism the tunneling current through a hybrid structure where a confined magnetic insulator (I) is sandwiched between two non-magnetic leads is calculated. The leads can be either normal metals (M) or superconductors (S). Each region is modelled as a single band in tight-binding approximation in order to understand the formation of the tunneling current as clearly as possible. The tunneling process itself is simulated by a hybridization between the lead and insulator conduction bands. The insulator is assumed to have localized moments which can interact with the tunneling …
H3LiIr2O6 is the first honeycomb-lattice system without any signs of long-range magnetic order down to the lowest temperatures, raising the hope for the realization of an ideal Kitaev quantum spin liquid. Its honeycomb layers are coupled by interlayer hydrogen bonds. Static or dynamic disorder of these hydrogen bonds was proposed to strongly affect the magnetic exchange and to make Kitaev-type interactions dominant. Using dielectric spectroscopy, here we provide experimental evidence for dipolar relaxations in H3LiIr2O6 and deuterated D3LiIr2O6, which mirror the dynamics of protons and deutero…
We study an interface between a Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) in the chiral phase and a non-chiral superconductor. When the coupling across the interface is sufficiently strong, the interface undergoes a transition into a phase characterized by a condensation of a bound state of a Bogoliubov quasiparticle in the superconductor and an emergent fermionic excitation in the spin liquid. In the condensed phase, electrons in the superconductor can coherently convert into emergent fermions in the spin liquid and vice versa. As a result, the chiral Majorana edge mode of the spin liquid becomes visible in t…
The periodic Anderson model is a classic theoretical model for understanding novel physics in heavy fermion systems. Here, we modify it with the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev interaction, (random all-to-all interaction) thus the resultant model admits an exact solution at large-$N$ (e.g. spin flavor) limit. By analytical field theory arguments and numerical calculations, we establish that the system supports a low-temperature (heavy) Fermi liquid and more interesting a non-Fermi liquid solution at elevated temperature/energy. For physical observable, the latter one contributes a sharp peak at Fermi energy…
A new quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate material H$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$ was synthesized recently and was found not to show any magnetic order or phase transition down to low temperatures. In this work, we study the quantum dynamics of the hydrogen ions, i.e., protons, in this material by combining first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis. We show that each proton and its adjacent oxygen ions form an electric dipole. The dipole interactions and the proton tunneling are captured by a transverse-field Ising model with a quantum disordered paraelectric ground state. The dipole ex…

We revisit the theory of magnetic Raman scattering in Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling, with a major focus on Kitaev materials. We show that Kitaev materials with bond-anisotropic interactions are generally expected to show both one- and two-magnon responses. It is further shown that, in order to obtain the correct leading contributions to the Raman vertex operator $\mc{R}$, one must take into account the precise, photon-assisted microscopic hopping processes of the electrons and that, in systems with multiple hopping paths, $\mc{R}$ contains terms beyond those appearing in the …
Measurements of conductance spectra in a superconductor - topological insulator - normal metal thin film junctions of NbN-$\rm Bi_2Se_3$-Au are reported. Junctions with ex-situ and in-situ prepared $\rm NbN-Bi_2Se_3$ interfaces were studied. At low temperatures, all the ex-situ junctions showed coherence peaks in their conductance spectra, but imbedded robust zero bias conductance peaks were observed only in junctions with a metallic or a metal to insulator transition below $\rm T_c$ of the NbN electrode. The in-situ junctions which had about two orders of magnitude lower resistance at low tem…
Frustrated magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling promise to host topological states of matter, with fractionalized excitations and emergent gauge fields. Kitaev's proposal for a honeycomb-lattice Majorana spin liquid has triggered an intense search for experimental realizations, with bond-dependent Ising interaction being the essential building block. A prime candidate is $α$-RuCl$_3$ whose phase diagram in a magnetic field is, however, not understood to date. Here we present conclusive experimental evidence for a novel field-induced ordered phase in $α$-RuCl$_3$, sandwiched between the zigz…
Layered α-RuCl3 is a promising material to potentially realize the long-sought Kitaev quantum spin liquid with fractionalized excitations. While evidence of this exotic state has been reported under a modest in-plane magnetic field, such behavior is largely inconsistent with theoretical expectations of Kitaev phases emerging only in out-of-plane fields. These predicted field-induced states have been mostly out of reach due to the strong easy-plane anisotropy of bulk crystals, however. We use a combination of tunneling spectroscopy, magnetotransport, electron diffraction, and ab initio calculat…
The bulk-boundary correspondence is a defining feature of topological states of matter. However, for quantum magnets such as spin liquids or topological magnon insulators a direct observation of topological surface states has proven challenging because of the charge-neutral character of the excitations. Here we propose spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy as a spin-sensitive local probe to provide direct information about charge neutral topological edge states. We show how their signatures, imprinted in the local structure factor, can be extracted by specifically employing the strength…
