We investigate the quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state of anisotropic Kitaev model with antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling under the $[001]$ magnetic field with the finite-temperature Lanczos method (FTLM). In this anisotropic AFM Kitaev model with $K_{X}=K_{Y}$, $K_{X}+K_{Y}+K_{Z}=-3K$, and $K_{Z}<-K$, with magnetic field increasing, the gapped QSL experiences a transition to a gapless QSL at $h_{c1}=gμ_{B}H_{z1}/K$, to another gapless QSL with $C_{6}$ rotational symmetry at $h_{c2}$, and to a new $U(1)$ gapless QSL between $h_{c3}$ and $h_{c4}$, respectively. These indicate that magnetic field could first turn the anisotropic gapped or gapless QSL back into the isotropic $C_{6}$ gapless one and then make it to undergo the similar evolution as the isotropic case. Moreover, the critical magnetic fields $h_{c1}$, $h_{c2}$, $h_{c3}$, and $h_{c4}$ come up monotonically with the increasing Kitaev coupling; this suggests that the magnetic field can be applied to the modulation of the anisotropic Kitaev materials.
We investigate the ground state properties of the spin S=1 Kitaev honeycomb model under a magnetic field based on the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation. With the time reversal symmetry breaking due to the magnetic field, a gapped Kitaev spin liquid is identified for both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev couplings. The topological nature of such Kitaev spin liquid is manifested by the nearly quantized Wilson loop, degeneracy in the entanglement spectra and existence of edge modes. While the FM Kitaev spin liquid is destroyed by a weaker magnetic field …
Recent proposals for spin-1 Kitaev materials, such as honeycomb Ni oxides with heavy elements of Bi and Sb, have shown that these compounds naturally give rise to antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev couplings. Conceptual interest in such AFM Kitaev systems has been sparked by the observation of a transition to a gapless $U(1)$ spin liquid at intermediate field strengths in the AFM spin-1/2 Kitaev model. However, all hitherto known spin-1/2 Kitaev materials exhibit ferromagnetic bond-directional exchanges. Here we discuss the physics of the spin-1 Kitaev model in a magnetic field and show, by extens…
We investigate the non-Abelian topological chiral spin liquid phase in the two-dimensional (2D) Kitaev honeycomb model subject to a magnetic field. By combining density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization (ED) we study the energy spectra, entanglement, topological degeneracy, and expectation values of Wilson loop operators, allowing for robust characterization. While the ferromagnetic (FM) Kitaev spin liquid is already destroyed by a weak magnetic field with Zeeman energy $H_*^\text{FM} \approx 0.02$, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin liquid remains robust up to a magn…
Finding new materials with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev interaction is an urgent issue to broaden and enrich the quantum magnetism research significantly. By carrying out inelastic neutron scattering experiments and subsequent analysis, we conclude that Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ are new honeycomb cobalt-based AFM Kitaev systems. The spin-orbit excitons at 20-28~meV in both compounds strongly supports the idea that Co$^{2+}$ ions of both compounds have a spin-orbital entangled $J_\rm{eff}=1/2$ state. Furthermore, we found that a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian can …
Material realizations of the bond-dependent Kitaev interactions with $S$=1/2 local moments have vitalized the research in quantum spin liquids. Recently, it has been proposed that higher-spin analogues of the Kitaev interactions may also occur in a number of materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. In contrast to the celebrated $S$=1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, the higher-spin Kitaev models are not exactly solvable. Hence, the existence of quantum spin liquids in these systems remains an outstanding question. In this work, we use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) m…
We investigate magnetic properties in the $S=1$ Kitaev model in the anisotropic limit. Performing the fourth-order perturbation expansion with respect to the $x$-bonds, $y$-bonds, and magnetic field, we derive the effective Hamiltonian, where the low-energy physics should be described by the free spins with an effective magnetic field. Making use of the exact diagonalization method for small clusters, we discuss ground-state properties in the system complementary.
We investigate both the longitudinal thermal conductivity ($κ_{xx}$) and the planar thermal Hall conductivity ($κ_{xy}$) in the Kitaev spin liquid candidate of Co-based honeycomb antiferromagnet Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ in a magnetic field ($B$) applied along the $a$ and $a^*$ axes. A finite $κ_{xy}$ is resolved for both field directions in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase below the Néel temperature of 27 K. The temperature dependence of $κ_{xy}/T$ shows the emergence of topological bosonic excitations. In addition, the field dependence of $κ_{xy}$ shows sign reversals at the critical fields in th…
We study low-energy properties of spin-$S$ Kitaev models in an anisotropic limit. The effective form of a local conserved quantity is derived in the low-energy subspace. We find this is the same as that of $S=1/2$ case for the half-integer spins but shows a different form for the integer spins. Applying the perturbation theory to the anisotropic Kitaev model, we obtain the effective Hamiltonian. In the integer spin case, the effective model is equivalent to a free spin model under an uniform magnetic field, where quantum fluctuations are quenched. On the other hand, in the half-integer case, t…
Ground state properties, dispersion relations and scaling behaviour of spin gap of a bond alternating spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ anisotropic Heisenberg chain have been studied where the exchange interactions on alternate bonds are ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) in two separate cases. The resulting models separately represent nearest neighbour (NN) AFM-AFM and AFM-FM bond alternating chains. Ground state energy has been estimated analytically by using both bond operator and Jordan-Wigner representations and numerically by using exact diagonalization. Dispersion relations, spin gap and s…

We study a quantum spin Kitaev model with zigzag edges to clarify the effects of anisotropy in the exchange couplings on the spin propagation. We simulate the spin and Majorana dynamics triggered by a magnetic pulse, using the real-space time-dependent Majorana mean-field theory. When the anisotropy is small, the dispersion of the itinerant Majorana fermions remains gapless, where the velocity of the spin propagation matches the group velocity of the itinerant Majorana fermions at the nodal points. On the other hand, in the gapped system with a large anisotropy, the spin propagation is strongl…
We present a study of longitudinal thermal transport in the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice, focusing on the role of anisotropic exchange to cover both, gapless and gapped phases. Employing a complementary combination of exact diagonalization on small systems and an average gauge configuration approach for up to $\sim O(10^4)$ spinful sites, we report results for the dynamical energy current auto-correlation function as well as the dc thermal conductivity over a wide range of temperatures and exchange anisotropies. Despite a pseudogap in the current correlation spectra, induced by e…

Recently there has been a renewed interest in properties of the higher-spin Kitaev models, especially their low-dimensional analogues with additional interactions. These quasi-1D systems exhibit rich phase diagrams with symmetry-protected topological phases, Luttinger liquids, hidden order, and higher-rank magnetism. However, the nature of the pure spin-$S$ Kitaev chains are not yet fully understood. Earlier works found a unique ground state with short-ranged correlations for $S = 1$, and an intriguing double-peak structure in the heat capacity associated with an entropy plateau. To understand…
We study the nearest neighboring spin-1/2 Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma ($KJΓ$) model on the honeycomb lattice in the parameter region of ferromagnetic (FM) Kitaev and antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg couplings relevant for honeycomb iridates, using a coupled-chain analysis. Starting from the gapless Luttinger liquid phase of a decoupled $KJΓ$ chain, the inter-chain interactions in the two-dimensional model is treated within a self-consistent mean field approach based on the Luttinger liquid theory. In the FM Gamma region, our analysis recovers the reported 120$^\circ$ magnetic order, previously o…
We study the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) in a [001] magnetic field employing the mean field theory (MFT/MF) in the Majorana fermion representation. The MF Hamiltonian of the system has the Bogoliubov de-Gennes (BdG) form of a 2D Weyl superconductor. We discover a robust gapless regime in intermediate magnetic field for both gapless and gapped AFM KSL with Jx = Jy before the system is polarized in high magnetic field. A topological phase transition (PT) connecting two gapless phases with nodal lines takes place at a critical magnetic field hc1 in this regime. While the nodal lines at hc1 is protec…
The ruby lattice is a four-valent lattice interpolating between honeycomb and triangular lattices. In this work we investigate the topological spin-liquid phases of a spin Hamiltonian with Kitaev interactions on the ruby lattice using exact diagonalization and perturbative methods. The latter interactions combined with the structure of the lattice yield a model with $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetry. We mapped out the phase digram of the model and found gapped and gapless spin-liquid phases. While the low energy sector of the gapped phase corresponds to the well-known topologic…
The Kitaev model is an exactly-soluble quantum spin model, whose ground state provides a canonical example of a quantum spin liquid. Spin excitations from the ground state are fractionalized into emergent matter fermions and $Z_2$ fluxes. The $Z_2$ flux excitation is pointlike in two dimensions, while it comprises a closed loop in three dimensions because of the local constraint for each closed volume. In addition, the fluxes obey global constraints involving (semi)macroscopic number of fluxes. We here investigate such global constraints in the Kitaev model on a three-dimensional lattice compo…
We present the electron tunneling transport and spectroscopic characters of a superconducting {\it Josephson} junction with a barrier of single anisotropic Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) layer. We find that the dynamical spin correlation features are well reflected in the direct-current differential conductance $dI^{c}/dV$ of the single-particle tunneling, including the unique spin gap and dressed itinerant Majorana dispersive band, in addition to an energy shift $2Δ$ of two-lead superconducting gaps. From the spectral characters, we identify different topological quantum phases of the aniso…
We study the non-equilibrium slow dynamics for the Kitaev model both in the presence and the absence of disorder. For the case without disorder, we demonstrate, via an exact solution, that the model provides an example of a system with an anisotropic critical point and exhibits unusual scaling of defect density $n$ and residual energy $Q$ for a slow linear quench. We provide a general expression for the scaling of $n$ ($Q$) generated during a slow power-law dynamics, characterized by a rate $τ^{-1}$ and exponent $α$, from a gapped phase to an anisotropic quantum critical point in $d$ dimension…
The antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered state of GdRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ which consists of AFM-stacked ferromagnetic layers is investigated by magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The almost isotropic Gd$^{3+}$ paramagnetic resonance becomes anisotropic in the AFM ordered region below 107 K. The emerging internal anisotropic exchange-fields are still small enough to allow an investigation of their magnetization dynamics by using a standard microwave-frequency magnetic resonance technique. We could characterize this anisotropy in detail in the ferromagnetic layers of the excitation at 9 and 34 GHz. We d…

We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ model with antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchanges in the strong anisotropic (toric code) limit to understand the phases and the intervening phase transitions between the gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid and the spin-ordered (in the Heisenberg limit) as well as paramagnetic phases (in the pseudo-dipolar, $Γ$, limit). We find that the paramagnetic phase obtained in the large $Γ$ limit has no topological entanglement entropy and is proximate to a gapless critical point of a system described by an equal superposition of differently oriented stacked one-dimensional $Z…
Using quantum chemistry calculations we shed fresh light on the electronic structure and magnetic properties of RuCl3, a proposed realization of the honeycomb Kitaev spin model. It is found that the nearest-neighbor Kitaev exchange K is weaker than in 5d5 Ir oxides but still larger than other effective spin couplings. The electronic-structure computations also indicate a ferromagnetic K in the halide, which is supported by a detailed analysis of the field-dependent magnetization. From exact-diagonalization calculations for extended Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonians we additionally find that a tra…
The so-called "Kitaev candidate" materials based on $4d^5$ and $5d^5$ metals have recently emerged as magnetic systems displaying strongly anisotropic exchange interactions reminiscent of the Kitaev's honeycomb model. Recently, these materials have been shown to commonly display a distinct saw-tooth angular dependence of the magnetic torque over a wide range of magnetic fields. While higher order chiral spin interactions have been considered as a source of this observation, we show here that bilinear anisotropic interactions and/or $g$-anisotropy are each sufficient to explain the observed tor…
The helimagnetic order describes a non-collinear spin texture of antiferromagnets, arising from competing exchange interactions. Although collinear antiferromagnets are elemental building blocks of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics, the potential of implementing spintronic functionality in non-collinear antiferromagnets has not been clarified thus far. Here, we propose an AFM helimagnet of EuCo2As2 as a novel single-phase spintronic material that exhibits a remarkable sign reversal of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). The contrast in the AMR arises from two electrically distinctive magnet…
We present a functional renormalization group scheme that allows us to calculate frustrated magnetic systems of arbitrary lattice geometry beyond O(200) sites from first principles. We study the magnetic susceptibility of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-1/2 Heisenberg model ground state on the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice, where J' denotes the coupling strength of the intrachain bonds along one lattice direction and J the coupling strength of the interchain bonds. We identify three distinct phases of the Heisenberg model. Increasing xi=J'/J from the effective square lattice xi=0, …
In this work, we investigate the microscopic nature of the magnetism in honeycomb iridium-based systems by performing a systematic study of how the effective magnetic interactions in these compounds depend on various electronic microscopic parameters. We show that the minimal model describing the magnetism in A$_2$IrO$_3$ includes both isotropic and anisotropic Kitaev-type spin-exchange interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbor Ir ions, and that the magnitude of the Kitaev interaction between next-nearest neighbor Ir magnetic moments is comparable with nearest neighbor interaction…
Rare-earth chalcohalide REChX (RE = rare earth; Ch = O, S, Se, Te; X = F, Cl, Br, I) is a newly reported family of Kitaev spin liquid candidates. The family offers a platform where a strong spin-orbit coupling meets a van der Waals layered and undistorted honeycomb spin lattice, which outputs highly anisotropic exchange couplings required by the Kitaev model. YbOCl is the first single crystal of the family we grew, with a size up to ~ 15 mm. We have performed magnetization and high magnetic field electron spin resonance measurements from 2 to 300 K. We develop the mean-field scenario for the a…
We study the spin-$1/2$ ferromagnetic Heisenberg-Kitaev-$Γ$ model in the anisotropic (Toric code) limit to reveal the nature of the quantum phase transition between the gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid and a spin ordered phase (driven by Heisenberg interactions) as well as a trivial paramagnet (driven by pseudo-dipolar interactions, $Γ$). The transitions are obtained by a simultaneous condensation of the Ising electric and magnetic charges-- the fractionalized excitations of the $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid. Both these transitions can be continuous and are examples of deconfined quantum critical …
With the advancement in synthesizing and analyzing Kitaev materials, the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice has attracted a lot of attention in the last few years. Several variations, which include additional anisotropic interactions as well as response to external magnetic field, have been investigated and many exotic ordered phases have been discussed. On the other hand, quantum spin systems are proving to be a fertile ground to realize and study bosonic analogues of fermionic topological states of matter. Using the spin-wave theory we show that the ferromagnetic phase of the e…
In the pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ honeycomb Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling, there are two types of bond-dependent exchange interactions, named Kitaev ($K$) and $Γ$, leading to strong frustration. While the ground state of the Kitaev model is a quantum spin liquid with fractionalized excitations, the ground state of the $Γ$ model remains controversial. In particular, the phase diagram of the $KΓ$ model with ferromagnetic $K$ and antiferromagnetic $Γ$ interactions has been intensively studied because of its relevance to candidate materials such as $α$-RuCl$_{3}$. Numerical studies…
Magnetic properties of the substitution series Ru$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Cl$_3$ were investigated to determine the evolution from the anisotropic Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ with $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ magnetic Ru$^{3+}$ ions to the isotropic Heisenberg magnet CrCl$_3$ with $S = 3/2$ magnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions. Magnetization measurements on single crystals revealed a reversal of the magnetic anisotropy under doping, which we argue to arise from the competition between anisotropic Kitaev and off-diagonal interactions on the Ru-Ru links and approximately isotropic Cr-Ru and isotropic Cr-Cr interactions. In addit…
The leading order nonlinear (NL) susceptibility, $χ_3$, in a paramagnet is negative and diverges as $T \rightarrow 0$. This divergence is destroyed when spins correlate and the NL response provides unique insights into magnetic order. Dimensionality, exchange interaction, and preponderance of quantum effects all imprint their signatures in the NL magnetic response. Here, we study the NL susceptibilities in the proximate Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ which differs from the expected antiferromagnetic behavior. For $T< T_c$ = 7.5 K and field $B$ in the ab-plane, we obtain contrasting NL responses in…
The magnetic insulator $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a promising candidate to realize Kitaev interactions on a quasi-2D honeycomb lattice. We perform extensive susceptibility measurements on single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, including angle-dependence of the in-plane longitudinal and transverse susceptibilities, which reveal a unidirectional anisotropy within the honeycomb plane. By comparing the experimental results to a high-temperature expansion of a Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ spin Hamiltonian with bond anisotropy, we find excellent agreement with the observed phase shift and periodicity of the angle-resol…
Recently, the family of rare-earth chalcohalides were proposed as candidate compounds to realize the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL). In the present work, we firstly propose an effective spin Hamiltonian consistents with the symmetry group of the crystal structure. Then we apply classical Monte Carlo simulations to preliminarily study the model and establish a phase diagram. When approaching to the low temperature limit, several magnetic long range orders are observed, including the stripe, the zigzag, the antiferromagnetic (AFM), the ferromagnetic (FM), the incommensurate spiral (IS), the Multi-$\pm…
In the search for quantum spin liquids, candidate materials for the Kitaev model and its extensions have been intensively explored during the past decade, as the models realize the exact quantum spin liquids in the ground state. Thus far, insulating magnets in the low-spin $d^5$ electron configuration under the strong spin-orbit coupling have been studied for realizing the Kitaev-type bond-dependent anisotropic interactions between the spin-orbital entangled Kramers doublets. To extend the candidates, here we investigate the systems in a high-spin $d^7$ electron configuration, whose ground sta…
Materials that realize Kitaev spin models with bond-dependent anisotropic interactions have long been searched for, as the resulting frustration effects are predicted to stabilize novel forms of magnetic order or quantum spin liquids. Here we explore the magnetism of $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, which has the topology of a 3D Kitaev lattice of inter-connected Ir honeycombs. Using resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction we find a complex, yet highly-symmetric incommensurate magnetic structure with non-coplanar and counter-rotating Ir moments. We propose a minimal Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian that naturally …
