We define a very general class of CHL-models associated with any string theory (bosonic or supersymmetric) compactified on an internal CFT C x T^d. We take the orbifold by a pair (g,δ), where g is a (possibly non-geometric) symmetry of C and δis a translation along T^d. We analyze the T-dualities of these models and show that in general they contain Atkin-Lehner type symmetries. This generalizes our previous work on N=4 CHL-models based on heterotic string theory on T^6 or type II on K3 x T^2, as well as the `monstrous' CHL-models based on a compactification of heterotic string theory on the Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman CFT V^{\natural}.
We present a few remarks on disconnected components of the moduli space of heterotic string compactifications on $T_2$. We show in particular how the eight dimensional CHL heterotic string can be understood in terms of topologically non-trivial $E_8\times E_8$ and $\Spin(32)/Z_2$ vector bundles over the torus, and that the respective moduli spaces coincide.
We show that a class of torsional compactifications of the heterotic string are dual to conventional Kahler heterotic string compactifications. This observation follows from the recently proposed analogue of the c-map for the heterotic string.
In this note we study the preservation of the classical pure spinor BRST constraints under super T-duality transformations. We also determine the invariance of the one-loop conformal invariance and of the local gauge and Lorentz anomalies under the super T-dualities.
We study ${\cal N}=2$ compactifications of heterotic string theory on the CHL orbifold $(K3\times T^2)/\mathbb{Z}_N$ with $N= 2, 3, 5, 7$. $\mathbb{Z}_N$ acts as an involution on $K3$ together with a shift of $1/N$ along one of the circles of $T^2$. These compactifications generalize the example of the heterotic string on $K3\times T^2$ studied in the context of dualities in ${\cal N}=2$ string theories. We evaluate the new supersymmetric index for these theories and show that their expansion can written in terms of the McKay-Thompson series associated with the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ involution embedd…
We suggest that the (2,0) six dimensional field theory compactified on $S^1\times K3$ is the Matrix model description of both M-theory on $K3$ and the Heterotic string on $T^3$. This proposal is different from existing proposals for the Heterotic theory. Different limits of the base space geometry give the different space-time interpretations, making M-theory/Heterotic duality manifest. We also present partial results on Heterotic/F-theory duality.
We review the structure $D=6, N=1$ string vacua with emphasis on the different connections due to T-dualities and S-dualities. The topics discussed include: Anomaly cancellation; K3 and orbifold $D=6, N=1$ heterotic compactifications; T-dualities between $E_8\times E_8$ and $Spin(32)/Z_2$ heterotic vacua; non-perturbative heterotic vacua and small instantons; N=2 Type-II/Heterotic duality in D=4 ; F-theory/heterotic duality in D=6; and heterotic/heterotic duality in six and four dimensions.
We review several aspects of heterotic, type II, F-theory, and M-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds and fourfolds. In the context of dualities we focus on the heterotic gauge structure determined by the various types of fibration relevant in the framework of heterotic/type II duality in D=4 as well as 4D F-theory. We also consider transitions between Calabi-Yau manifolds in both three and four dimensions and review some of the consequences for the behavior of the superpotential.
Three-dimensional string models with half-maximal supersymmetry are believed to be invariant under a large U-duality group which unifies the S and T dualities in four dimensions. We propose an exact, U-duality invariant formula for four-derivative scalar couplings of the form $F(Φ) (\nablaΦ)^4$ in a class of string vacua known as CHL $\mathbb{Z}_N$ heterotic orbifolds with $N$ prime, generalizing our previous work which dealt with the case of heterotic string on $T^6$. We derive the Ward identities that $F(Φ)$ must satisfy, and check that our formula obeys them. We analyze the weak coupling ex…
Starting with the superconformal indices for 4d N=2 and N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories, which are related by superpotential deformation, we perform the contour integrations and isolate the residue contributions which can be attributed to the surface defects. These defects can be interpreted as the IR limit of dynamical vortices. Given the 2d N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) world sheet theories for these surface defects, we then verify this statement by explicitly computing their elliptic genera and identifying their fugacity parameters through superconformal algebras. We show them precisely match, and …
Geometric transitions between Calabi-Yau manifolds have proven to be a powerful tool in exploring the intricate and interconnected vacuum structure of string compactifications. However, their role in N=1, 4-dimensional string compactifications remains relatively unexplored. In this work we present a novel proposal for transitioning the background geometry (including NS5-branes and holomorphic, slope-stable vector bundles) of 4-dimensional, N=1 heterotic string compactifications through a conifold transition connecting Calabi-Yau threefolds. Our proposal is geometric in nature but informed by t…
These lectures begin by reviewing the evidence for S duality of the toroidally compactified heterotic string in 4d that was obtained in the period 1992--94. Next they review recently discovered dualities that relate all five of the 10d superstring theories and a quantum extension of 11d supergravity called M theory. The study of p-branes of various dimensions (some of which are D-branes) plays a central role. The final sections survey supersymmetric string vacua in 6d and some of the dual constructions by which they can be obtained. Special emphasis is given to a class of N=1 models that exhib…
We discuss an orbifold of the toroidally compactified heterotic string which gives a global reduction of the dimension of the moduli space while preserving the supersymmetry. This construction yields the moduli space of the first of a series of reduced rank theories with maximal supersymmetry discovered recently by Chaudhuri, Hockney, and Lykken. Such moduli spaces contain non-simply-laced enhanced symmetry points in any spacetime dimension D<10. Precisely in D=4 the set of allowed gauge groups is invariant under electric-magnetic duality, providing further evidence for S-duality of the D=4 he…
In this article we summarize and extend the ideas and investigations on so called target space dualities of heterotic models with (0,2) worldsheet supersymmetry as they were partly presented on the String-Math 2011 conference. After the generic description of the duality, we give some novel examples involving vector bundles that are not deformations of the tangent bundle but more generic ones corresponding to SO(10) and SU(5) gauge theories in four dimensions. We show explicitly that the necessary conditions for a duality also hold for compactifications of this kind. Finally we will present th…
We study compactifications of F-theory on certain Calabi--Yau threefolds. We find that $N=2$ dualities of type II/heterotic strings in 4 dimensions get promoted to $N=1$ dualities between heterotic string and F-theory in 6 dimensions. The six dimensional heterotic/heterotic duality becomes a classical geometric symmetry of the Calabi--Yau in the F-theory setup. Moreover the F-theory compactification sheds light on the nature of the strong coupling transition and what lies beyond the transition at finite values of heterotic string coupling constant.
In this paper we describe the heterotic dual of the type IIB theory compactified to four dimensions on a toroidal orientifold in the presence of fluxes. The type IIB background is most easily described in terms of an M-theory compactification on a four-fold. The heterotic dual is obtained by performing a series of U-dualities. We argue that these dualities preserve supersymmetry and that the supergravity description is valid after performing them. The heterotic string is compactified on a manifold that is no longer Kahler and has torsion. These manifolds have to satisfy a number of constraints…
Compactifications of the CHL string to eight dimensions can be characterized by embeddings of root lattices into the rank 12 momentum lattice $Λ_M$, the so-called Mikhailov lattice. Based on this data, we devise a method to determine the global gauge group structure including all $U(1)$ factors. The key observation is that, while the physical states correspond to vectors in the momentum lattice, the gauge group topology is encoded in its dual. Interpreting a non-trivial $π_1(G) \equiv {\cal Z}$ for the non-Abelian gauge group $G$ as having gauged a ${\cal Z}$ 1-form symmetry, we also prove tha…
Motivated by precision counting of BPS black holes, we analyze six-derivative couplings in the low energy effective action of three-dimensional string vacua with 16 supercharges. Based on perturbative computations up to two-loop, supersymmetry and duality arguments, we conjecture that the exact coefficient of the $\nabla^2(\nablaϕ)^4$ effective interaction is given by a genus-two modular integral of a Siegel theta series for the non-perturbative Narain lattice times a specific meromorphic Siegel modular form. The latter is familiar from the Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (DVV) conjecture on exact…
We propose a candidate for the dual (in the weak/strong coupling sense) of the six-dimensional heterotic string compactification constructed recently by Chaudhuri, Hockney and Lykken. It is a type IIA string theory compactified on an orbifold $K3/Z_2$, where the $Z_2$ action involves an involution of $K3$ with fixed points, and also has an embedding in the U(1) gauge group associated with the Ramond-Ramond sector of the type IIA string theory. This introduces flux of the U(1) gauge field concentrated at the orbifold points. This construction provides an explicit example where the dual of a sup…
We argue that all conjectured dualities involving various string, M- and F- theory compactifications can be `derived' from the conjectured duality between type I and SO(32) heterotic string theory, T-dualities, and the definition of M- and F- theories. (Based on a talk given at the conference on `Advanced Quantum Field Theory', Le Londe-les-Maures, France, Aug.31-Sept.5, 1996, in memory of Claude Itzykson)
We present a new class of dualities relating non-geometric Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theory to T-fold compactifications of the heterotic string, both preserving four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry. The non-geometric Calabi-Yau space is a $K3$ fibration over $T^2$ with non-geometric monodromies in the duality group $O(Γ_{4,20})$; this is dual to a heterotic reduction on a $T^4$ fibration over $T^2$ with the $O(Γ_{4,20})$ monodromies now viewed as heterotic T-dualities. At a point in moduli space which is a minimum of the scalar potential, the type II compactifica…
I review the appearance, within Matrix theory, of the $SL(5,Z)$ U-duality group of M-theory on $T^4$, and the duality between M-theory on K3 and the Heterotic string on $T^3$. In both cases the duality is geometrical and manifest.
CHL compactifications are supersymmetry preserving orbifolds of any perturbatively renormalizable and ultraviolet finite ground state of the perturbative string theories: heterotic, type I, or type II, preserving 32, 16, 12, 8, 4, (or zero) supersymmetries, and retaining the perturbative renormalizability and finiteness of the parent string vacuum. In this paper, we review the genesis of the CHL (Chaudhuri-Hockney-Lykken) project within the broader context of the full String/M Duality web, establishing the existence of moduli spaces with a small number of massless scalar fields, the decompacti…
We consider Narain T-duality on a nontrivially fibered n-torus bundle in the presence of a topologically nontrivial NS H flux. The action of the duality group on the topology and H flux of the corresponding type II and heterotic string backgrounds is determined. The topology change is specialized to the case of supersymmetric T^2-fibered torsional string backgrounds with nontrivial H flux. We prove that it preserves the global tadpole condition in the total space as well as on the base of the torus fibration. We find that some of these T-dualities exchange half of the field strength of an unbr…
We suggest that compactifications on Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spaces of type IIA, IIB, heterotic strings and eleven dimensional vacuua of M-theory are related by a combination of $T$ and strong/weak dualities. Maldacena conjecture relates then all these vacuua to a conformal theory on the boundaries. Furthermore acting with discrete groups on part of the internal spaces of these theories will lead to further dual theories with less or no supersymmetry.
In this work we study F-theory compactifications on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau n-folds which have $\mathbb{P}^1$-fibered base manifolds. Such geometries, which we study in both 4- and 6-dimensions, are both ubiquitous within the set of Calabi-Yau manifolds and play a crucial role in heterotic/F-theory duality. We discuss the most general formulation of $\mathbb{P}^1$-bundles of this type, as well as fibrations which degenerate at higher codimension loci. In the course of this study, we find a number of new phenomena. For example, in both 4- and 6-dimensions we find transitions whereby the…
Two classes of stringy instanton effects, stronger than standard field theory instantons, are identified in the heterotic string theory. These contributions are established using type IIA/heterotic and type I/heterotic dualities. They provide examples for the heterotic case of the effects predicted by Shenker based on the large-order behavior of perturbation theory. The corrections vanish as the radius of the compactification goes to infinity. For appropriate amplitudes, they are computable worldsheet or worldline instanton effects on the dual side. Some potential applications are discussed.
We review here some aspects of our recent works about the geometric engineering of heterotic little string theories using F-theory. Building on the seminal work by Aspinwall and Morrison as well as Intrilligator and Blum, we solve some longstanding open questions thanks to recent progress in our understanding of 6D (1,0) theories and their generalized symmetries. On the geometry side, these systems correspond to non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau varieties that must admit the structure of an elliptic K3 fibration. From fiberwise F-theory/Heterotic duality the K3 plays a central role -…
We present orientifold and F-theory duals of the heterotic string compactification constructed by Chaudhuri, Hockney and Lykken (CHL) which has the maximal supersymmetry but gauge group of reduced rank. The 8-dimensional dual is given by the Type IIA orientifold on the Möbius band. We show the non-trivial monodromy on the base induces non-simply laced gauge groups on the F-theory orbifolds dual to the CHL strings. The F-theory models dual to the CHL strings in six dimensions are examples of N=2 F-theory vacua. We discuss the other N=2 F-theory vacua in six dimensions.
In this work we explore the physics associated to Calabi-Yau (CY) n-folds that can be described as a fibration in more than one way. Beginning with F-theory vacua in various dimensions, we consider limits/dualities with M-theory, type IIA, and heterotic string theories. Our results include many M-/F-theory correspondences in which distinct F-theory vacua - associated to different elliptic fibrations of the same CY n-fold - give rise to the same M-theory limit in one dimension lower. Examples include 5-dimensional correspondences between 6-dimensional theories with Abelian, non-Abelian and supe…
We consider various aspects of compactifications of the Type I/heterotic $Spin(32)/\Z_2$ theory on K3. One family of such compactifications includes the standard embedding of the spin connection in the gauge group, and is on the same moduli space as the compactification of the heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ theory on K3 with instanton numbers (8,16). Another class, which includes an orbifold of the Type I theory recently constructed by Gimon and Polchinski and whose field theory limit involves some topological novelties, is on the moduli space of the heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ theory on K3 with inst…
The degeneracies of supersymmetric quarter BPS dyons in four dimensions and of spinning black holes in five dimensions in a CHL compactification are computed exactly using Borcherds lift. The Hodge anomaly in the construction has a physical interpretation as the contribution of a single M-theory Kaluza-Klein 6-brane in the 4d-5d lift. Using factorization, it is shown that the resulting formula has a natural interpretation as a two-loop partition function of left-moving heterotic string, consistent with the heuristic picture of dyons in the M-theory lift of string webs.
A supersymmetric solution to type II supergravity is constructed by superposing two hyperkählers with torsion metrics. The solution is given by a Käler with torsion metric with $SU(3)$ holonomy. The metric is embedded into a heterotic solution obeying the Strominger system, together with a Yang-Mills instanton obtained by the standard embedding. T dualities lead to an $SO(6)$ instanton describing a symmetry breaking from $E_8$ to $SO(10)$. The compactification by taking a periodic array yields a supersymmetric domain wall solution of heterotic supergravity.
Duality covariant curvature and torsion tensors in double field theory/generalized geometry are central in analyzing consistent truncations, generalized dualities, and related integrable $σ$-models. They are constructed systematically with the help of a larger, auxiliary space in a procedure inspired by Cartan geometry originally proposed by Poláček and Siegel for bosonic strings. It pivots around a maximally isotropic group that captures the generalized structure group of the physical space. We show how dropping the isotropy condition on this group allows us to describe heterotic/type I strin…
We consider an eleven dimensional supergravity compactified on $K3\times T^2$ and show that the resulting five dimensional theory has identical massless states as that of heterotic string compactified on a specific five torus $T^5$. The strong-weak coupling duality of the five dimensional theory is argued to represent a ten dimensional Type $IIA$ string compactified on $K3 \times S^1$, supporting the conjecture of string-string duality in six dimensions. In this perspective, we present magnetically charged solution of the low energy heterotic string effective action in five dimensions with a c…
Some relationships between string theories and eleven-dimensional supergravity are discussed and reviewed. We see how some relationships can be derived from others. The cases of N=2 supersymmetry in nine dimensions and N=4 supersymmetry in four dimensions are discussed in some detail. The latter case leads to consideration of quotients of a K3 surface times a torus and to a possible peculiar relationship between eleven-dimensional supergravity and the heterotic strings in ten dimensions. Lecture given at "S-Duality and Mirror Symmetry", Trieste, June 1995.
We compute the genus-two chiral partition function of the left-moving heterotic string for a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ CHL orbifold. The required twisted determinants can be evaluated explicitly in terms of the untwisted determinants and theta functions using orbifold techniques. The dependence on Prym periods cancels neatly once summation over odd charges is properly taken into account. The resulting partition function is a Siegel modular form of level two and precisely equals recently proposed dyon partition function for this model. This result provides an independent weak coupling derivation of the dy…
In this letter, we investigate corrections to quartic gauge couplings in compactifications of string theories on a 2-torus without vector structure. First, we calculate the threshold corrections to F^4 terms in the heterotic CHL string. Then, using the CHL string/type I duality dictionary, we map these corrections to perturbative and non-perturbative effects in type I string compactified on 2-torus without vector structure. Comparing the perturbative terms provides a quantitative test of the S-duality conjecture. The non-perturbative contributions are due to D-strings wrapping the torus. A T-d…
Anomalous U(1) gauge symmetries in type II orientifold theories show some unexpected properties. In contrast to the heterotic case, the masses of the gauge bosons are in general of order of the string scale even in the absence of large Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. Despite this fact, the notion of heterotic-type II orientifold duality remains a useful concept, although this symmetry does not seem to hold in all cases considered. We analyse the status of this duality symmetry, clarify the properties of anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry in the orientifold picture and comment on the consequences for phenom…
We study a system of $N_c$ $D3$-branes intersecting $D7$-branes and $O7$-planes in 1+1-dimensions. We use anomaly cancellation and string dualities to argue that there must be chiral fermion zero-modes on the $D3$-branes which are localized near the $O7$-planes. Away from the orientifold limit we verify this by using index theory as well as explicit construction of the zero-modes. This system is related to F-theory on K3 and heterotic matrix string theory, and the heterotic strings are related to Alice string defects in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills. In the limit of large $N_c$ we find an $…
We discuss non-perturbative corrections to the gauge kinetic functions in a four-dimensional N=2 gauge theory realized with a system of D7/D3-branes in a compactification of type I' theory on T_4/Z_2 x Z_2. The non-perturbative contributions arise when D(-1) branes, corresponding to stringy instantons, are added to the system; such contributions can be explicitly evaluated using localization techniques and precisely match the results predicted by the heterotic/type I' duality. This agreement represents a very non-trivial test of the stringy multi-instanton calculus.
We present a review of heterotic-type I string duality. In particular, we discuss the effective field theory of six- and four-dimensional compactifications with N>1 supersymmetries. We then describe various duality tests by comparing gauge couplings, N=2 prepotentials, as well as higher-derivative F-terms. Based on invited lectures delivered at: 33rd Karpacz Winter School of Theoretical Physics ``Duality, Strings and Fields,'' Przesieka, Poland, 13 - 22 February 1997; Trieste Conference on Duality Symmetries in String Theory, Trieste, Italy, 1 - 4 April 1997; Cargese Summer School ``Strings, B…
We consider four dimensional CHL models with sixteen spacetime supersymmetries obtained from orbifolds of type IIA superstring on K3 x T^2 by a Z_N symmetry acting (possibly) non-geometrically on K3. We show that most of these models (in particular, for geometric symmetries) are self-dual under a weak-strong duality acting on the heterotic axio-dilaton modulus S by a "Fricke involution" S --> -1/NS. This is a novel symmetry of CHL models that lies outside of the standard SL(2,Z)-symmetry of the parent theory, heterotic strings on T^6. For self-dual models this implies that the lattice of purel…
We study certain even-eight curve configurations on a specific class of Jacobian elliptic K3 surfaces with lattice polarizations of rank ten. These configurations are associated with K3 double covers, some of which are elliptic but not Jacobian elliptic. Several non-generic cases corresponding to K3 surfaces of higher Picard rank are also discussed. Finally, the results and the construction in question are interpreted in the context of the string dualities linked with the eight-dimensional CHL string.
We review the coset construction of conformal field theories; the emphasis is on the construction of the Hilbert spaces for these models, especially if fixed points occur. This is applied to the $N=2$ superconformal cosets constructed by Kazama and Suzuki. To calculate heterotic string spectra we reformulate the Gepner con- struction in terms of simple currents and introduce the so-called extended Poincaré polynomial. We finally comment on the various equivalences arising between models of this class, which can be expressed as level rank dualities. (Invited talk given at the III. International…
We study the duality between M-theory on compact holonomy G2-manifolds and the heterotic string on Calabi-Yau three-folds. The duality is studied for K3-fibered G2-manifolds, called twisted connected sums, which lend themselves to an application of fiber-wise M-theory/Heterotic Duality. For a large class of such G2-manifolds we are able to identify the dual heterotic as well as F-theory realizations. First we establish this chain of dualities for smooth G2-manifolds. This has a natural generalization to situations with non-abelian gauge groups, which correspond to singular G2-manifolds, where …
Higher-derivative interactions and transformation rules of the fields in the effective field theories of the massless string states are strongly constrained by space-time symmetries and dualities. Here we use an exact formulation of ten dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity coupled to Yang-Mills with manifest T-duality symmetry to construct the first order $α'$-corrections of the heterotic string effective action. The theory contains a supersymmetric and T-duality covariant generalization of the Green-Schwarz mechanism that determines the modifications to the leading order supersymmetry transf…
We show how the brane wrapping rules, recently discovered in closed oriented string theories compactified on tori, are extended to the case of the Type IIA string compactified on K3. To this aim, a crucial role is played by the duality between this theory and the Heterotic string compactified on a four-dimensional torus T^4. We first show how the wrapping rules are applied to the T^4/Z_N orbifold limits of K3 by relating the D0 branes, obtained as D2 branes wrapping two-cycles, to the perturbative BPS states of the Heterotic theory on T^4. The wrapping rules are then extended to the solitonic …
We develop a matrix model for the SO(32) Heterotic string with certain Wilson lines on the lightlike circle. This is done by using appropriate T-dualities. The method works for an infinite number of Wilson lines, but not for all. The matrix model is the theory on the D-string of type I wrapped on a circle with a SO(32) Wilson line on the circle. The radius of the circle depends on the Wilson line. This is a 1+1 dimensional O(N) theory on a circle. N depends not only on the momentum around the lightlike circle but also on the winding and SO(32) quantum numbers of the state. Perspectives for obt…
We compute and analyse a variety of four-derivative gravitational terms in the effective action of six- and four-dimensional type II string ground states with N=4 supersymmetry. In six dimensions, we compute the relevant perturbative corrections for the type II string compactified on K3. In four dimensions we do analogous computations for several models with (4,0) and (2,2) supersymmetry. Such ground states are related by heterotic-type II duality or type II-type II U-duality. Perturbative computations in one member of a dual pair give a non-perturbative result in the other member. In particul…
We show that the high temperature limits of the heterotic E8xE8 and Spin(32)/Z2 strings and their Type I A/B superstring duals are finite and convergent. The Hagedorn growth of the degeneracies in the string mass level expansion is suppressed by an exponential linear in the mass level number for both heterotic strings, and suppressed by the exponential of the negative square root of the mass level number for the Type IB superstring. However, in the massless gauge field theoretic limit of the Type IB open and closed superstring, we find clear evidence for the thermal deconfinement phase transit…
We use local mirror symmetry in type IIA string compactifications on Calabi-Yau n+1 folds $X_{n+1}$ to construct vector bundles on (possibly singular) elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau n-folds Z_n. The interpretation of these data as valid classical solutions of the heterotic string compactified on Z_n proves F-theory/heterotic duality at the classical level. Toric geometry is used to establish a systematic dictionary that assigns to each given toric n+1-fold $X_{n+1}$ a toric n fold Z_n together with a specific family of sheafs on it. This allows for a systematic construction of phenomenologica…
