In this paper we consider a scalar parabolic equation on a star graph; the model is quite general but what we have in mind is the description of traffic flows at a crossroad. In particular, we do not necessarily require the continuity of the unknown function at the node of the graph and, moreover, the diffusivity can be degenerate. Our main result concerns a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for the existence of traveling waves in the graph. We also study in great detail some examples corresponding to quadratic and logarithmic flux functions, for different diffusivities, to which our results apply.
In this paper, the existence of a non-trivial, positive and bounded critical traveling wave solution of a diffusive disease model, whose reaction system has infinity many equilibria, is obtained for the first time. This gives an affirmative answer to an open problem left in [X. Wang, H. Wang, J. Wu, Traveling waves of diffusive predator-prey systems: disease outbreak propagation, Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. A 32 (2012) 3303-3324]. Our result shows that the critical traveling wave in this model is a mixed of front and pulse type.
This paper is concerned with a lattice dynamical system modeling the evolution of susceptible and infective individuals at discrete niches. We prove the existence of traveling waves connecting the disease-free state to non-trivial leftover concentrations. We also characterize the minimal speed of traveling waves and we prove the non-existence of waves with smaller speeds.
In this paper we prove the existence of finite traveling-wave type solutions to the nonlinear double degenerate parabolic equation of turbulent filtration with absorption.
The minimal wave speed of time-periodic traveling waves arising from a diffusive Kermack-McKendrick model with seasonality and nonlocal delayed interactions
We consider the non-monotone degenerate diffusion equation with time delay. Different from the linear diffusion equation, the degenerate equation allows for semi-compactly supported traveling waves. In particular, we discover sharp-oscillating waves with sharp edges and non-decaying oscillations. The degenerate diffusion and the effect of time delay cause us essential difficulties. We show the existence for both sharp and smooth traveling wave solutions. Furthermore, we prove the oscillating properties of the waves for large wave speeds and large time delay. Since the existing approaches are n…
The aim is to assess the combined effect of diffusion and dispersion on shocks in the moderate dispersion regime. For a diffusive dispersive approximation of the equations of one-dimensional elasticity (or p-system), we study convergence of traveling waves to shocks. The problem is recast as a Hamiltonian system with small friction, and an analysis of the length of oscillations yields convergence in the moderate dispersion regime $\eps, δ\to 0$ with $δ= o(\eps)$, under hypotheses that the limiting shock is admissible according to the Liu E-condition and is not a contact discontinuity at either…
We investigate the traveling wave solutions of a three-species system involving a single predator and a pair of strong-weak competing preys. Our results show how the predation may affect this dynamics. More precisely, we describe several situations where the environment is initially inhabited by the predator and by either one of the two preys. When the weak competing prey is an aboriginal species, we show that there exist traveling waves where the strong prey invades the environment and either replaces its weak counterpart, or more surprisingly the three species eventually co-exist. Furthermor…
This paper establishes the spectral stability in exponentially weighted spaces of smooth traveling monotone fronts for reaction diffusion equations of Fisher-KPP type with nonlinear degenerate diffusion coefficient. It is assumed that the former is degenerate, that is, it vanishes at zero, which is one of the equilibrium points of the reaction. A parabolic regularization technique is introduced in order to locate a subset of the compression spectrum of the linearized operator around the wave, whereas the point spectrum is proved to be stable with the use of energy estimates. Detailed asymptoti…
We consider the propagation of a flame front in a solid periodic medium. The model is governed by a free boundary system in which the front's velocity depends on the temperature via a kinetic rate which may degenerate. We show the existence of travelling wave solutions which are bounded and global. Previous results by the same authors (cf. Alibaud, Namah, On the propagation of a periodic flame front by an Arrhenius kinetic,{\it Interfaces Free Bound.,} 2017) were obtained for essentially positively lower bounded kinetics or eventually which have some very weak degeneracy. Here we consider gene…
This paper is concerned with the traveling wave solutions of delayed reaction-diffusion systems. By using Schauder's fixed point theorem, the existence of traveling wave solutions is reduced to the existence of generalized upper and lower solutions. Using the technique of contracting rectangles, the asymptotic behavior of traveling wave solutions for delayed diffusive systems is obtained. To illustrate our main results, the existence, nonexistence and asymptotic behavior of positive traveling wave solutions of diffusive Lotka-Volterra competition systems with distributed delays are established…
This paper is concerned with traveling wave solutions for a chemotaxis model with degenerate diffusion of porous medium type. We establish the existence of semi-finite traveling waves, including the sharp type and $C^1$ type semi-finite waves. Our results indicate that chemotaxis slows down the wave speed of semi-finite traveling wave, that is, the traveling wave speed for chemotaxis with porous medium (degenerate) diffusion is smaller than that for the porous medium equation without chemotaxis. As we know, this is a new result not shown in the existing literature. The result appears to be a l…
The convergence to non-diffusive self-similar solutions is investigated for non-negative solutions to the Cauchy problem $\partial_t u = Δ_p u + |\nabla u|^q$ when the initial data converge to zero at infinity. Sufficient conditions on the exponents $p>2$ and $q>1$ are given that guarantee that the diffusion becomes negligible for large times and the $L^\infty$-norm of $u(t)$ converges to a positive value as $t\to\infty$.
Convergence to a single steady state is shown for non-negative and radially symmetric solutions to a diffusive Hamilton-Jacobi equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, the diffusion being the $p$-Laplacian operator, $p\ge 2$, and the source term a power of the norm of the gradient of $u$. As a first step, the radially symmetric and non-increasing stationary solutions are characterized.
We prove the asymptotic convergence of a space-periodic entropy solution of a one-dimensional degenerate parabolic equation to a traveling wave. It is also shown that on a segment containing the essential range of the limit profile the flux function is linear (with the slope equaled to the speed of the traveling wave) and the diffusion function is constant.
This paper is concerned with the critical sharp traveling wave for doubly nonlinear diffusion equation with time delay, where the doubly nonlinear degenerate diffusion is defined by $\Big(\big|(u^m)_x\big|^{p-2}(u^m)_x\Big)_x$ with $m>0$ and $p>1$. The doubly nonlinear diffusion equation is proved to admit a unique sharp type traveling wave for the degenerate case $m(p-1)>1$, the so-called slow-diffusion case. This sharp traveling wave associated with the minimal wave speed $c^*(m,p,r)$ is monotonically increasing, where the minimal wave speed satisfies $c^*(m,p,r)<c^*(m,p,0)$ for any time del…
We analyze the stationary and traveling wave solutions to a family of degenerate dispersive equations of KdV and NLS-type. In stark contrast to the standard soliton solutions for non-degenerate KdV and NLS equations, the degeneracy of the elliptic operators studied here allows for compactly supported steady or traveling states. As we work in $1$ dimension, ODE methods apply, however the models considered have formally conserved Hamiltonian, Mass and Momentum functionals, which allow for variational analysis as well.
We study the existence of traveling waves for the parabolic system \begin{equation} \partial_t w - \partial_{x}^2 w = -\nabla_{\mathbb{u}} W(w) \mbox{ in } [0,+\infty) \times \mathbb{R} \end{equation} where $W$ is a potential bounded below and possessing two minima at different levels. We say that $\mathfrak{w}$ is a traveling wave solution of the previous equation if there exist $c^\star>0$ and $\mathfrak{u} \in \mathcal{C}^2(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{R}^k)$ such that $\mathfrak{w}(t,x)=\mathfrak{u}(x-ct)$. For a class of potentials $W$, heteroclinic traveling waves of the previous equation where sh…
By employing the N-barrier method developed in the paper, we establish a new N-barrier maximum principle for diffusive Lotka-Volterra systems of two competing species. As an application of this maximum principle, we show under certain conditions, the existence and nonexistence of traveling waves solutions for systems of three competing species. In addition, new $(1,0,0)$-$(u^{\ast},v^{\ast},0)$ waves are given in terms of the tanh function provided that the parameters satisfy certain conditions.
In historical mathematics and physics, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation or a quasilinear stationary version of a time-dependent viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation in growing interface and universality classes, is also known by the different name as the quasilinear Riccati type equation. The existence of solutions to this type of equation under some assumptions and requirements, still remains an interesting open problem at the moment. In our previous studies \cite{MP2018, MPT2019}, we obtained the global bounds and gradient estimates for quasilinear elliptic equations with measure data. There hav…
We perform the analysis of a hyperbolic model which is the analog of the Fisher-KPP equation. This model accounts for particles that move at maximal speed $ε^{-1}$ ($ε\textgreater{}0$), and proliferate according to a reaction term of monostable type. We study the existence and stability of traveling fronts. We exhibit a transition depending on the parameter $ε$: for small $ε$ the behaviour is essentially the same as for the diffusive Fisher-KPP equation. However, for large $ε$ the traveling front with minimal speed is discontinuous and travels at the maximal speed $ε^{-1}$. The traveling front…
We analyze a non-standard isoperimetric problem in the plane associated with a metric having degenerate conformal factor at two points. Under certain assumptions on the conformal factor, we establish the existence of curves of least length under a constraint associated with enclosed Euclidean area. As a motivation for and application of this isoperimetric problem, we identify these isoperimetric curves, appropriately parametrized, as traveling wave solutions to a bi-stable Hamiltonian system of PDE's. We also determine the existence of a maximal propagation speed for these traveling waves thro…
We prove the existence of Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) type traveling fronts in space-time periodic and mean zero incompressible advection, and establish a variational (minimization) formula for the minimal speeds. We approach the existence by considering limit of a sequence of front solutions to a regularized traveling front equation where the nonlinearity is combustion type with ignition cut-off. The limiting front equation is degenerate parabolic and does not permit strong solutions, however, the necessary compactness follows from monotonicity of fronts and degenerate regularity. We …
We consider a diffusive transport equation with discontinuous flux and prove the velocity averaging result under non-degeneracy conditions. In order to achieve the result, we introduce a new variant of micro-local defect functionals which are able to ``recognise'' changes of the type of the equation. As a corollary, we show the existence of a weak solution for the Cauchy problem for nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation with discontinuous flux. We also show existence of strong traces at $t=0$ for so-called quasi-solutions to degenerate parabolic equations under non-degeneracy conditions on t…
We investigate the properties of traveling wave solutions to hyperbolic conservation laws augmented with diffusion and dispersion, and review the existence and qualitative properties of the associated kinetic functions, which characterize the class of admissible shock waves selected by such regularizations.
Under natural spectral stability assumptions motivated by previous investigations of the associated spectral stability problem, we determine sharp $L^p$ estimates on the linearized solution operator about a multidimensional planar periodic wave of a system of conservation laws with viscosity, yielding linearized $L^1\cap L^p\to L^p$ stability for all $p \ge 2$ and dimensions $d \ge 1$ and nonlinear $L^1\cap H^s\to L^p\cap H^s$ stability and $L^2$-asymptotic behavior for $p\ge 2$ and $d\ge 3$. The behavior can in general be rather complicated, involving both convective (i.e., wave-like) and dif…
In this work we study global well-posedness and large time behaviour for a typical reaction--diffusion system, which include degenerate diffusion, and whose non-linearities arise from chemical reactions. We show that there is an {\it indirect diffusion effect}, i.e. an effective diffusion for the non-diffusive species which is incurred by a combination of diffusion from diffusive species and reversible reactions between the species. Deriving new estimates for such degenerate reaction-diffusion system, we show, by applying the entropy method, that the solution converges exponentially to equilib…
This paper is concerned with the existence of traveling wave solutions for diffusive two-species Lotka-Volterra systems with delay in both the reaction and diffusion terms without monotonicity. We extend the partial or cross monotone iteration method to systems that satisfy the partial quasi-monotone condition via construction appropriate upper and lower solutions. This is done by using Schauder's fixed point theorem.
We determine the asymptotic spreading speed of an invasive species, which invades the territory of a native competitor, governed by a diffusive competition model with a free boundary in a spherically symmetric setting. This free boundary problem was studied recently in [7] but only rough bounds of the spreading speed was obtained there. We show in this paper that the spreading speed has an asymptotic limit (as time goes to infnity), which is given by a certain traveling wave type system of one space dimension, called a semi-wave. This appears to be the first result that gives the precise asymp…
In this article, we are interested in the Dirichlet problem for parabolic viscous Hamilton-Jacobi Equations. It is well-known that the gradient of the solution may blow up in finite time on the boundary of the domain, preventing a classical extension of the solution past this singularity. This behavior comes from the fact that one cannot prescribe the Dirichlet boundary condition for all time and, in order to define a solution globally in time, one has to use "generalized boundary conditions" in the sense of viscosity solution. In this work, we treat the case when the diffusion operator is the…
Constrained gradient flows are studied in fracture mechanics to describe strongly irreversible (or unidirectional) evolution of cracks. The present paper is devoted to a study on the long-time behavior of non-compact orbits of such constrained gradient flows. More precisely, traveling wave dynamics for a one-dimensional fully nonlinear Allen-Cahn type equation involving the positive-part function is considered. Main results of the paper consist of a construction of a one-parameter family of degenerate traveling wave solutions (even identified when coinciding up to translation) and exponential …
The development of sustainable vector/pest control methods is of utmost importance to reduce the risk of vector-borne diseases and pest damages on crops. Among them, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is a very promising one. In this paper, using diffusion operators, we extend a temporal SIT model, developed in a recent paper, into a partially degenerate reaction-diffusion SIT model. Adapting some theoretical results on traveling wave solutions for partially degenerate reaction-diffusion equations, we show the existence of mono-stable and bi-stable traveling-wave solutions for our SIT system. …
We study the existence and nonexistence of traveling waves of general diffusive Kermack-McKendrick SIR models with standard incidence where the total population is not constant. The three classes, susceptible $S$, infected $I$ and removed $R$, are all involved in the traveling wave solutions. We show that the minimum speed for the existence of traveling waves for this three-dimensional non-monotonic system can be derived from its linearizaion at the initial disease-free equilibrium. The proof in this paper is based on Schauder fixed point theorem and Laplace transform and provides a promising …
We study the local dynamics near general unstable traveling waves of the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the energy space by constructing smooth local invariant center-stable, center-unstable and center manifolds. We also prove that (i) the center-unstable manifold attracts nearby orbits exponentially before they get away from the traveling waves along the center directions and (ii) if an initial data is not on the center-stable manifolds, then the forward flow will be ejected away from traveling waves exponentially fast. Furthermore, under a non-degenerate assumption, we show the orbital stab…
We show that in one space dimension, a linearly degenerate hyperbolic system of rich type admits exact traveling wave solutions if the initial data are Riemann type outside of a space interval. In a particular case of the system including physical models, we prove the convergence of entropy solutions to traveling waves in the $L^1$ norm as the time goes to infinity. The traveling waves are determined explicitly in terms of the initial data and the system. We also obtain the stability of entropy solutions in $L^1$.
We consider a quasilinear KdV equation that admits compactly supported traveling wave solutions (compactons). This model is one of the most straightforward instances of degenerate dispersion, a phenomenon that appears in a variety of physical settings as diverse as sedimentation, magma dynamics and shallow water waves. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions with sufficiently smooth, spatially localized initial data.
We are concerned with a class of degenerate diffusion equations with time delay describing population dynamics with age structure. In our recent study [{\em Nonlinearity}, 33 (2020), 4013--4029], we established the existence and uniqueness of critical traveling wave for the time-delayed degenerate diffusion equations, and obtained the reducing mechanism of time delay on critical wave speed. In this paper, we now are able to show the asymptotic spreading speed and its coincidence with the critical wave speed $c^*(m,r)$ of sharp wave, and prove that the initial perturbation or the boundary of th…
We study the existence of particular traveling wave solutions of a nonlinear parabolic degenerate diffusion equation with a shear flow. Under some assumptions we prove that such solutions exist at least for propagation speeds c {\in}]c*, +{\infty}, where c* > 0 is explicitly computed but may not be optimal. We also prove that a free boundary hy- persurface separates a region where u = 0 and a region where u > 0, and that this free boundary can be globally parametrized as a Lipschitz continuous graph under some additional non-degeneracy hypothesis; we investigate solutions which are, in the reg…
Consider the thin-film equation $h_t + \left(h h_{yyy}\right)_y = 0$ with a zero contact angle at the free boundary, that is, at the triple junction where liquid, gas, and solid meet. Previous results on stability and well-posedness of this equation have focused on perturbations of equilibrium-stationary or self-similar profiles, the latter eventually wetting the whole surface. These solutions have their counterparts for the second-order porous-medium equation $h_t - (h^m)_{yy} = 0$, where $m > 1$ is a free parameter. Both porous-medium and thin-film equation degenerate as $h \searrow 0$, but …
This article studies, both theoretically and numerically, a nonlinear drift-diffusion equation describing a gas of fermions in the zero-temperature limit. The equation is considered on a bounded domain whose boundary is divided into an "insulating" part, where homogeneous Neumann conditions are imposed, and a "contact" part, where nonhomogeneous Dirichlet data are assigned. The existence of stationary solutions for a suitable class of Dirichlet data is proven by assuming a simple domain configuration. The long-time behavior of the time-dependent solution, for more complex domain configurations…
We consider a system of two reaction-diffusion-advection equations describing the one dimensional directed motion of particles with superimposed diffusion and mutual alignment. For this system we show the existence of traveling wave solutions for weak diffusion by singular perturbation techniques and provide evidence for their existence also for stronger diffusion. We discuss different types of wave fronts and their composition to more complex patterns and illustrate their emergence from generic initial data by simulations. We also investigate the dependence of the wave velocities on the model…
This work is concerned with the existence of entire solutions of the diffusive Lotka-Volterra competition system \begin{equation}\label{eq:abstract} \begin{cases} u_{t}= u_{xx} + u(1-u-av), & \qquad \ x\in\mathbb{R} \cr v_{t}= d v_{xx}+ rv(1-v-bu), & \qquad \ x\in\mathbb{R} \end{cases} \quad (1) \end{equation} where $d,r,a$, and $b$ are positive constants with $a\neq 1$ and $b\neq 1$. We prove the existence of some entire solutions $(u(t,x),v(t,x))$ of $(1)$ corresponding to $(Φ_{c}(ξ),0)$ at $t=-\infty$ (where $ξ=x-ct$ and $Φ_c$ is a traveling wave solution of the scalar Fisher-KPP defined by…
In this study, we analyze the behavior of monotone traveling waves of a one-dimensional porous medium equation modeling mechanical properties of living tissues. We are interested in the asymptotics where the pressure, which governs the diffusion process and limits the creation of new cells, becomes very stiff, and the porous medium equation degenerates towards a free boundary problem of Hele-Shaw type. This is the so-called incompressible limit. The solutions of the limit Hele-Shaw problem then couple "free dynamics" with zero pressure, and "incompressible dynamics" with positive pressure and …
We study the global bifurcation curves of a diffusive logistic equation, when harvesting is orthogonal to the first eigenfunction of the Laplacian, for values of the linear growth up to $λ_2+δ$, examining in detail their behavior as the linear growth rate crosses the first two eigenvalues. We observe some new behavior with regard to earlier works concerning this equation. Namely, the bifurcation curves suffer a transformation at $λ_1$, they are compact above $λ_1$, there are precisely two families of degenerate solutions with Morse index equal to zero, and the whole set of solutions below $λ_2…
We consider in this paper a diffusion-convection reaction equation in one space dimension. The main assumptions are about the reaction term, which is monostable, and the diffusivity, which changes sign once or twice; then, we deal with a forward-backward parabolic equation. Our main results concern the existence of globally defined traveling waves, which connect two equilibria and cross both regions where the diffusivity is positive and regions where it is negative. We also investigate the monotony of the profiles and show the appearance of sharp behaviours at the points where the diffusivity …
We consider a scalar parabolic equation in one spatial dimension. The equation is constituted by a convective term, a reaction term with one or two equilibria, and a positive diffusivity which can however vanish. We prove the existence and several properties of traveling-wave solutions to such an equation. In particular, we provide a sharp estimate for the minimal speed of the profiles and improve previous results about the regularity of wavefronts. Moreover, we show the existence of an infinite number of semi-wavefronts with the same speed.
