We generalize probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) with binary codes to the case of non-binary codes defined over prime finite fields. Firstly, we introduce probabilistic shaping via time sharing where shaping applies to information symbols only. Then, we design circular quadrature amplitude modulations (CQAM) that allow to directly generalize PAS to prime finite fields with full shaping.
We propose multi-dimensional short blocklength probabilistic shaping to increase the nonlinear tolerance gain in digital subcarrier multiplexing transmission systems and demonstrate an improvement in performance compared to lower dimensional formats.
An unsupervised learning approach based on expectation maximization is proposed to obtain the parameters of a soft decision forward error correction decoding metric for probabilistic shaping. The algorithm depends only on the channel observations and does not require transmitted data.
On the one hand, sign-bit shaping is a popular shaping scheme where the conditional probability of the sign bit is made non-equiprobable. On the other hand, probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) is a popular coding scheme, to combine shaping and a bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM), where the sign bit should not be involved in the shaping. Indeed, with the PAS scheme the sign bit is the parity bit, i.e., the output of the systematic error-correcting code. As a result, sign-bit shaping has been used with multilevel coded modulations rather than BICM. In this paper, we show that with minor …
The interaction between carrier phase recovery and probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) in the nonlinear regime is investigated. We show that, for sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio, the first provides the same inter-channel nonlinearity mitigation achieved by short block-length PAS.
A new probabilistic shaping distribution that outperforms Maxwell-Boltzmann is studied for the nonlinear fiber channel. Additional gains of 0.1 bit/symbol MI or 0.2 dB SNR for both DP-256QAM and DP-1024QAM are reported after 200 km nonlinear fiber transmission.
The rate flexibility and probabilistic shaping gain of $4$-dimensional signaling is experimentally tested for short-reach, unrepeated transmission. A rate granularity of 0.5 bits/QAM symbol is achieved with a distribution matcher based on a simple look-up table.
Probabilistic shaping of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used to enhance the sensitivity of an optical communication system. Sensitivity gains of 0.43 dB and 0.8 dB are demonstrated in back-to-back experiments by shaping of 16QAM and 64QAM, respectively. Further, numerical simulations are used to prove the robustness of probabilistic shaping to a mismatch between the constellation used and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the channel. It is found that, accepting a 0.1 dB SNR penalty, only four shaping distributions are required to support these gains for 64QAM.
An LDPC coded modulation scheme with probabilistic shaping, optimized interleavers and noniterative demapping is proposed. Full-field simulations show an increase in transmission distance by 8% compared to uniformly distributed input.
For a layered probabilistic shaping (PS) scheme with a general decoding metric, an achievable rate is derived using Gallager's error exponent approach and the concept of achievable code rates is introduced. Several instances for specific decoding metrics are discussed, including bit-metric decoding, interleaved coded modulation, and hard-decision decoding. It is shown that important previously known achievable rates can also be achieved by layered PS. A practical instance of layered PS is the recently proposed probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS).
Linear layered probabilistic shaping (LLPS) is proposed, an architecture for linear codes to efficiently encode to shaped code words. In the previously proposed probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) architecture, a distribution matcher (DM) maps information bits to shaped bits, which are then systematically encoded by appending uniformly distributed parity bits. LLPS extends PAS by probabilistic parity shaping (PPS), which uses a syndrome DM to calculate shaped parity bits. LLPS enables the transmission with any desired distribution using linear codes, furthermore, by LLPS, a given linear code…
A modification to 5G New Radio (NR) polar code is proposed, which improves the error correction performance with higher order modulation through probabilistic shaping. The presented scheme mainly re-uses existing hardware at the transmitter, and modifications at the receiver are small. Simulation results show that the presented approach can improve the performance by up to 1dB for 256-QAM on AWGN channels
Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), deployed in billions of communication devises, exhibits a shaping-loss of $π\mathrm{e}/6$ ($\approx 1.53$ dB) compared to the Shannon-Hartley theorem. With inspiration gained from special (leaf, flower petal, and seed) packing arrangements (so called spiral phyllotaxis) found among plants, we have designed a shape-versatile, circular symmetric, modulation scheme, \textit{the Golden angle modulation (GAM)}. Geometric- and probabilistic-shaping-based GAM schemes are designed that practically overcome the shaping-loss of 1.53 dB. Specifically, we consider mu…
Probabilistic Amplitude Shaping (PAS) is a coded-modulation scheme in which the encoder is a concatenation of a distribution matcher with a systematic Forward Error Correction (FEC) code. For reduced computational complexity the decoder can be chosen as a concatenation of a mismatched FEC decoder and dematcher. This work studies the theoretic limits of PAS. The classical joint source-channel coding (JSCC) setup is modified to include systematic FEC and the mismatched FEC decoder. At each step error exponents and achievable rates for the corresponding setup are derived.
A new approach for combining non-binary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) codes with higher-order modulation and probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) is presented. Instead of symbol-metric decoding (SMD), a bit-metric decoder (BMD) is used so that matching the field order of the non-binary code to the constellation size is not needed, which increases the flexibility of the coding scheme. Information rates, density evolution thresholds and finite-length simulations show that the flexibility comes at no loss of performance if PAS is used.
This work investigates protograph-based LDPC codes for the AWGN channel with OOK modulation. A non-uniform distribution of the OOK modulation symbols is considered to improve the power efficiency especially for low SNRs. To this end, a specific transmitter architecture based on time sharing is proposed that allows probabilistic shaping of (some) OOK modulation symbols. Tailored protograph-based LDPC code designs outperform standard schemes with uniform signaling and off-the-shelf codes by 1.1 dB for a transmission rate of 0.25 bits/channel use.
A probabilistic shaping method for multi-level coding (MLC) is presented, where the transmitted symbols are forced to have a shaped non-uniform distribution. It is shown that shaping only a single bit-level suffices to compensate for most of the shaping loss on the fading channels. A polar code based implementation of the proposed scheme is presented, where shaping is performed by using a precoder at the transmitter without increasing the decoding complexity. Simulation results show that performance improvements can be obtained compared to BICM- and MLC-based polar coding without shaping on Ra…
This work shows how non-binary low-density parity-check codes over GF($2^p$) can be combined with probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) (Böcherer, et al., 2015), which combines forward-error correction with non-uniform signaling for power-efficient communication. Ultra-sparse low-density parity-check codes over GF(64) and GF(256) gain 0.6 dB in power efficiency over state-of-the-art binary LDPC codes at a spectral efficiency of 1.5 bits per channel use and a blocklength of 576 bits. The simulation results are compared to finite length coding bounds and complemented by density evolution analysi…
We propose a new shaping scheme for the Gaussian channel whose complexity is approximately half the one of a binary distribution matcher (DM). The result is obtained as follows: We first show that most of the shaping gain can be obtained via a simplified version of sign-bit shaping, which uses only two non-uniform binary sources. This is achieved by considering a stepwise Maxwell-Boltzmann-like distribution of the symbols. One of the two binary sources has a parameter $p$ close to 0. Hence, we then describe a binary DM which explicitly takes advantage of this aspect and has a negligible comple…
The hierarchical distribution matching (Hi-DM) approach for probabilistic shaping is described. The potential of Hi-DM in terms of trade-off between performance, complexity, and memory is illustrated through three case studies.
We consider probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) as a means of increasing the spectral efficiency of fiber-optic communication systems. In contrast to previous works in the literature, we consider probabilistic shaping with hard decision decoding (HDD). In particular, we apply the PAS recently introduced by Böcherer \emph{et al.} to a coded modulation (CM) scheme with bit-wise HDD that uses a staircase code as the forward error correction code. We show that the CM scheme with PAS and staircase codes yields significant gains in spectral efficiency with respect to the baseline scheme using a st…
The interplay of shaped signaling and fiber nonlinearities is reviewed in the asymptotic and finite-length regime. We present explanations and discuss implications of an optimum shaping length of just a few hundred symbols.
In this work, geometric shaping (GS) and probabilistic shaping (PS) for the AWGN channel is reviewed. Both approaches are investigated in terms of symbol-metric decoding (SMD) and bit-metric decoding (BMD). For GS, an optimization algorithm based on differential evolution is formulated. Achievable rate analysis reveals that GS suffers from a 0.4 dB performance degradation compared to PS when BMD is used. Forward-error correction simulations of the ATSC 3.0 modulation and coding formats (modcods) confirm the theoretical findings. In particular, PS enables seamless rate adaptation with one singl…
Probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) can flexibly vary the spectral efficiency (SE) of fiber-optic systems. In this paper, we demonstrate the application of PAS to bit-wise hard decision decoding (HDD) of product codes (PCs) by finding the necessary conditions to select the PC component codes. We show that PAS with PCs and HDD yields gains up to $2.7$ dB and SE improvement up to approximately $1$ bit/channel use compared to using PCs with uniform signaling and HDD. Furthermore, we employ the recently introduced iterative bounded distance decoding with combined reliability of PCs to improve pe…
Performance trade-offs between linear shaping and nonlinear tolerance of the recently introduced 4D orthant-symmetric 128-ary modulation format are investigated. Numerical simulations show 9.3% reach increase with respect to the 7b4D-2A8PSK format and probabilistically-shaped 16QAM with short blocklength.
We consider a nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT)-based transmission scheme, where data is embedded into the imaginary part of the nonlinear discrete spectrum. Inspired by probabilistic amplitude shaping, we propose a probabilistic eigenvalue shaping (PES) scheme as a means to increase the data rate of the system. We exploit the fact that for an NFT-based transmission scheme the pulses in the time domain are of unequal duration by transmitting them with a dynamic symbol interval and find a capacity-achieving distribution. The PES scheme shapes the information symbols according to the capacity-ac…
We propose two novel techniques to implement sequence selection (SS) for fiber nonlinearity mitigation, demonstrating a nonlinear shaping gain of 0.24 bits/s/Hz, just 0.1 bits/s/Hz below the SS capacity lower bound.
A scheme is proposed that combines probabilistic signal shaping with bit-metric decoding. The transmitter generates symbols according to a distribution on the channel input alphabet. The symbols are labeled by bit strings. At the receiver, the channel output is decoded with respect to a bit-metric. An achievable rate is derived using random coding arguments. For the 8-ASK AWGN channel, numerical results show that at a spectral efficiency of 2 bits/s/Hz, the new scheme outperforms bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) without shaping and BICM with bit shaping (i Fabregas and Martinez, 2010) b…
Different aspects of probabilistic shaping for a multi-span optical communication system are studied. First, a numerical analysis of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel investigates the effect of using a small number of input probability mass functions (PMFs) for a range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), instead of optimizing the constellation shaping for each SNR. It is shown that if a small penalty of at most 0.1 dB SNR to the full shaping gain is acceptable, just two shaped PMFs are required per quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) over a large SNR range. For a multi-span wave…
The construction of optimal non-uniform mappings for discrete input memoryless channels (DIMCs) is investigated. An efficient algorithm to find optimal mappings is proposed and the rate by which a target distribution is approached is investigated. The results are applied to non-uniform mappings for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with finite signal constellations. The mappings found by the proposed methods outperform those obtained via a central limit theorem approach as suggested in the literature.
Probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) is a coded modulation strategy in which constellation shaping and channel coding are combined. PAS has attracted considerable attention in both wireless and optical communications. Achievable information rates (AIRs) of PAS have been investigated in the literature using Gallager's error exponent approach. In particular, it has been shown that PAS achieves the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise channel (Böcherer, 2018). In this work, we revisit the capacity-achieving property of PAS and derive AIRs using weak typicality. Our objective is to provi…
Product distribution matching (PDM) is proposed to generate target distributions over large alphabets by combining the output of several parallel distribution matchers (DMs) with smaller output alphabets. The parallel architecture of PDM enables low-complexity and high-throughput implementation. PDM is used as a shaping device for probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS). For 64-ASK and a spectral efficiency of 4.5 bits per channel use (bpcu), PDM is as power efficient as a single full-fledged DM. It is shown how PDM enables PAS for parallel channels present in multi-carrier systems like digital …
Parallel, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with an average sum power constraint are considered. It is shown how the waterfilling Shannon capacity can be approached by higher order modulation and probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS). This is achieved by a new distribution matching approach called product distribution matching (PDM). The asymptotic performance of PDM is analyzed by achievable rates. A heuristic for optimizing the input distribution is proposed, which enables signaling at a target spectral efficiency with a fixed-rate forward error correction (FEC) code, while the o…
We present a novel autoencoder-based learning of joint geometric and probabilistic constellation shaping for coded-modulation systems. It can maximize either the mutual information (for symbol-metric decoding) or the generalized mutual information (for bit-metric decoding).
In this letter, we propose a symbol-wise puncturing scheme to support hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) integrated probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS). To prevent the probability distribution distortion caused by the traditional sequential puncturing and realize the promised gain of PAS, we perform symbol-wise puncturing on the label sequence of the shaped modulation symbols. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed puncturing scheme achieves a stable shaping gain across the signal-to-noise ratio of at least 0.6 dB compared with the uniform case under the same throughput, while…

Autoencoder-based deep learning is applied to jointly optimize geometric and probabilistic constellation shaping for optical coherent communication. The optimized constellation shaping outperforms the 256 QAM Maxwell-Boltzmann probabilistic distribution with extra 0.05 bits/4D-symbol mutual information for 64 GBd transmission over 170 km SMF link.
Achievable information rates (AIRs) of wideband optical communication systems using ~40 nm (~5 THz) EDFA and ~100 nm (~12.5 THz) distributed Raman amplification are estimated based on a first-order perturbation analysis. The AIRs of each individual channel have been evaluated for DP-64QAM, DP-256QAM, and DP-1024QAM modulation formats. The impact of full-field nonlinear compensation (FF-NLC) and probabilistically shaped constellations using a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution were studied and compared to electronic dispersion compensation. It is found that a probabilistically shaped DP-1024QAM con…
This paper studies the impact of probabilistic shaping on effective signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and achievable information rates (AIRs) in a back-to-back configuration and in unrepeated nonlinear fiber transmissions. For back-to-back, various shaped quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) distributions are found to have the same implementation penalty as uniform input. By demonstrating in transmission experiments that shaped QAM input leads to lower effective SNR than uniform input at a fixed average launch power, we experimentally confirm that shaping enhances the fiber nonlinearities. Howeve…

The choice of constellations largely affects the performance of communication systems. When designing constellations, both the locations and probability of occurrence of the points can be optimized. These approaches are referred to as geometric and probabilistic shaping, respectively. Usually, the geometry of the constellation is fixed, e.g., quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used. In such cases, the achievable information rate can still be improved by probabilistic shaping. In this work, we show how autoencoders can be leveraged to perform probabilistic shaping of constellations. We de…
In this report, we study communication over an additive white Gaussian noise channel with a fixed signal constellation. We measure how much information we can send through this channel and how to improve the rate of communication by changing the input probability distribution. More precisely, we study the mutual information obtained from the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, the Blahut-Arimoto algorithm and a constrained version of the Blahut-Arimoto algorithm. We emphasise the fact that the Maxwell--Boltzmann distribution is not optimal. We also observe that the Blahut-Arimoto algorithm does no…
In this work, we construct energy-efficient variable-to-fixed length (V2F), fixed-to-variable length (F2V), and variable-to-variable length (V2V) prefix-free codes, which are optimal (or near-optimal) in the sense that no (or few) other codes with the size can achieve a smaller energy per code letter for the same entropy rate. Under stringent constraints of 4096 entries or below per codebook, the constructed codes yield an energy per code letter within a few tenths of a dB of the unconstrained theoretic lower bound, across a wide range of entropy rates with a very fine granularity. We also pro…
In this paper, we investigate the optimal probabilistic constellation shaping design for covert communication systems from a practical view. Different from conventional covert communications with equiprobable constellations modulation, we propose nonequiprobable constellations modulation schemes to further enhance the covert rate. Specifically, we derive covert rate expressions for practical discrete constellation inputs for the first time. Then, we study the covert rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the constellation distribution and power allocation. In particular, an approximat…
We introduce a trainable coded modulation scheme that enables joint optimization of the bit-wise mutual information (BMI) through probabilistic shaping, geometric shaping, bit labeling, and demapping for a specific channel model and for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Compared to probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS), the proposed approach is not restricted to symmetric probability distributions, can be optimized for any channel model, and works with any code rate $k/m$, $m$ being the number of bits per channel use and $k$ an integer within the range from $1$ to $m-1$. The propo…
In this work, the design of robust, protograph-based low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for rate-adaptive communication via probabilistic shaping is considered. Recently, probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) by Böcherer et al. has been introduced for capacity approaching and rate-adaptive communication with a bitwise-demapper and binary decoder. Previous work by the authors considered the optimization of protograph based LDPC codes for PAS and specific spectral efficiencies (SEs) to jointly optimize the LDPC code node degrees and the mapping of the coded bits to the bit-interleaved coded m…
In this paper, we propose a practical adaptive coding modulation scheme to approach the capacity of free-space optical (FSO) channels with intensity modulation/direct detection based on probabilistic shaping. The encoder efficiently adapts the transmission rate to the signal-to-noise ratio, accounting for the fading induced by the atmospheric turbulence. The transponder can support an arbitrarily large number of transmission modes using a low complexity channel encoder with a small set of supported rates. Hence, it can provide a solution for FSO backhauling in terrestrial and satellite communi…
