Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), deployed in billions of communication devises, exhibits a shaping-loss of $π\mathrm{e}/6$ ($\approx 1.53$ dB) compared to the Shannon-Hartley theorem. With inspiration gained from special (leaf, flower petal, and seed) packing arrangements (so called spiral phyllotaxis) found among plants, we have designed a shape-versatile, circular symmetric, modulation scheme, \textit{the Golden angle modulation (GAM)}. Geometric- and probabilistic-shaping-based GAM schemes are designed that practically overcome the shaping-loss of 1.53 dB. Specifically, we consider mutual information (MI)-optimized geometric-, probabilistic-, and joint geometric-and-probabilistic-GAM, under SNR-equality, and PAPR-inequality, constraints. Out of those, the joint scheme yields the highest MI-performance, and then comes the probabilistic schemes. This study finds that GAM could be an interesting candidate for future communication systems. Transmitter resource limited links, such as space probe-to-earth, satellite, and mobile-to-basestation, are scenarios where capacity achieving GAM could be of particular value.
In this paper we present a block coded modulation scheme for a 2 x 2 MIMO system over slow fading channels, where the inner code is the Golden Code. The scheme is based on a set partitioning of the Golden Code using two-sided ideals whose norm is a power of two. In this case, a lower bound for the minimum determinant is given by the minimum Hamming distance. The description of the ring structure of the quotients suggests further optimization in order to improve the overall distribution of determinants. Performance simulations show that the GC-RS schemes achieve a significant gain over the unco…
In this paper, we present a concatenated coding scheme for a high rate $2\times 2$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system over slow fading channels. The inner code is the Golden code \cite{Golden05} and the outer code is a trellis code. Set partitioning of the Golden code is designed specifically to increase the minimum determinant. The branches of the outer trellis code are labeled with these partitions. Viterbi algorithm is applied for trellis decoding. In order to compute the branch metrics a lattice sphere decoder is used. The general framework for code optimization is given. The per…
Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) exhibits a shaping-loss of $π\mathrm{e}/6$, ($\approx1.53$ dB) compared to the AWGN Shannon capacity. With inspiration gained from special (leaf, flower petal, and seed) packing arrangements (spiral phyllotaxis) found among plants, a novel, shape-versatile, circular symmetric, modulation scheme, the Golden Angle Modulation (GAM) is introduced. Disc-shaped, and complex Gaussian approximating bell-shaped, GAM-signal constellations are considered. For bell-GAM, a high-rate approximation, and a mutual information optimization formulation, are developed. Bell-G…
In this work, targeting, e.g., future generation cellular, microwave-links, or optical fiber systems, we propose a new geometric shaping design for golden angle modulation (GAM) based on a (double) truncated Gaussian input distribution. The design improves the mutual information (MI), and the peak-to-average power ratio, over the full signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) range relative to two key GAM schemes introduced in [1],[2]. Inspired by the proposed geometric shaping, a simpler, SNR-dependent, design is also suggested. The performance is numerically evaluated with respect to MI and compared with …
The Golden space-time trellis coded modulation (GST-TCM) scheme was proposed in \cite{Hong06} for a high rate $2\times 2$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system over slow fading channels. In this letter, we present the performance analysis of GST-TCM over block fading channels, where the channel matrix is constant over a fraction of the codeword length and varies from one fraction to another, independently. In practice, it is not useful to design such codes for specific block fading channel parameters and a robust solution is preferable. We then show both analytically and by simulation t…
An LDPC coded modulation scheme with probabilistic shaping, optimized interleavers and noniterative demapping is proposed. Full-field simulations show an increase in transmission distance by 8% compared to uniformly distributed input.
Different aspects of probabilistic shaping for a multi-span optical communication system are studied. First, a numerical analysis of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel investigates the effect of using a small number of input probability mass functions (PMFs) for a range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), instead of optimizing the constellation shaping for each SNR. It is shown that if a small penalty of at most 0.1 dB SNR to the full shaping gain is acceptable, just two shaped PMFs are required per quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) over a large SNR range. For a multi-span wave…
The performance of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) with bit shaping (i.e., non-equiprobable bit probabilities in the underlying binary code) is studied. For the Gaussian channel, the rates achievable with BICM and bit shaping are practically identical to those of coded modulation or multilevel coding. This identity holds for the whole range of values of signal-to-noise ratio. Moreover, the random coding error exponent of BICM significantly exceeds that of multilevel coding and is very close to that of coded modulation.
Parallel, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with an average sum power constraint are considered. It is shown how the waterfilling Shannon capacity can be approached by higher order modulation and probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS). This is achieved by a new distribution matching approach called product distribution matching (PDM). The asymptotic performance of PDM is analyzed by achievable rates. A heuristic for optimizing the input distribution is proposed, which enables signaling at a target spectral efficiency with a fixed-rate forward error correction (FEC) code, while the o…
This work investigates protograph-based LDPC codes for the AWGN channel with OOK modulation. A non-uniform distribution of the OOK modulation symbols is considered to improve the power efficiency especially for low SNRs. To this end, a specific transmitter architecture based on time sharing is proposed that allows probabilistic shaping of (some) OOK modulation symbols. Tailored protograph-based LDPC code designs outperform standard schemes with uniform signaling and off-the-shelf codes by 1.1 dB for a transmission rate of 0.25 bits/channel use.
On the one hand, sign-bit shaping is a popular shaping scheme where the conditional probability of the sign bit is made non-equiprobable. On the other hand, probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) is a popular coding scheme, to combine shaping and a bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM), where the sign bit should not be involved in the shaping. Indeed, with the PAS scheme the sign bit is the parity bit, i.e., the output of the systematic error-correcting code. As a result, sign-bit shaping has been used with multilevel coded modulations rather than BICM. In this paper, we show that with minor …
Signal shaping is vital to approach Shannon's capacity, yet it is challenging to implement at very high speeds. For example, probabilistic shaping often requires arithmetic coding to realize the target distribution. Geometric shaping requires look-up tables to store the constellation points. In this paper, we propose a four-dimensional amplitude coding (4D-AC) geometrical shaper architecture. The proposed architecture can generate in real time geometrically shaped 4D formats via simple logic circuit operations and two conventional quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulators. This paper de…
In this paper, we propose a practical adaptive coding modulation scheme to approach the capacity of free-space optical (FSO) channels with intensity modulation/direct detection based on probabilistic shaping. The encoder efficiently adapts the transmission rate to the signal-to-noise ratio, accounting for the fading induced by the atmospheric turbulence. The transponder can support an arbitrarily large number of transmission modes using a low complexity channel encoder with a small set of supported rates. Hence, it can provide a solution for FSO backhauling in terrestrial and satellite communi…
A multilevel coded modulation scheme is studied that uses solely binary polar codes and Honda-Yamamoto probabilistic shaping. The scheme is shown to achieve the capacity of discrete memoryless channels with input alphabets of cardinality a power of two. The performance of finite-length implementations is compared to polar-coded probabilistic amplitude shaping and constant composition distribution matching.
GFDM is a new modulation format whose advantages compared to OFDM reportedly make it a preferable modulation format for 5G. However, the non-orthogonal nature of GFDM with matched filtering (MF) receiver for pulses with good time-frequency localization is one of its disadvantages, leading to the proposal of WCP-COQAM, employing offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM). In this paper, we prove that a pulse satisfying orthogonality conditions for OQAM-OFDM will also satisfy orthogonality with WCP-COQAM, thus the pulse design methods developed for OQAM-OFDM can also be used with WCP-COQAM. T…
We introduce a trainable coded modulation scheme that enables joint optimization of the bit-wise mutual information (BMI) through probabilistic shaping, geometric shaping, bit labeling, and demapping for a specific channel model and for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Compared to probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS), the proposed approach is not restricted to symmetric probability distributions, can be optimized for any channel model, and works with any code rate $k/m$, $m$ being the number of bits per channel use and $k$ an integer within the range from $1$ to $m-1$. The propo…
We generalize probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) with binary codes to the case of non-binary codes defined over prime finite fields. Firstly, we introduce probabilistic shaping via time sharing where shaping applies to information symbols only. Then, we design circular quadrature amplitude modulations (CQAM) that allow to directly generalize PAS to prime finite fields with full shaping.

A scheme is proposed that combines probabilistic signal shaping with bit-metric decoding. The transmitter generates symbols according to a distribution on the channel input alphabet. The symbols are labeled by bit strings. At the receiver, the channel output is decoded with respect to a bit-metric. An achievable rate is derived using random coding arguments. For the 8-ASK AWGN channel, numerical results show that at a spectral efficiency of 2 bits/s/Hz, the new scheme outperforms bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) without shaping and BICM with bit shaping (i Fabregas and Martinez, 2010) b…
We consider probabilistic shaping to maximize the achievable information rate of coded modulation (CM) with hard decision decoding. The proposed scheme using binary staircase codes outperforms its uniform CM counterpart by more than 1.3 dB for 64-QAM and 5 bits/symbol.
Achievable information rates are used as a metric to design novel modulation formats via geometric shaping. The proposed geometrically shaped 256-ary constellation achieves SNR gains of up to 1.18 dB.
A modification to 5G New Radio (NR) polar code is proposed, which improves the error correction performance with higher order modulation through probabilistic shaping. The presented scheme mainly re-uses existing hardware at the transmitter, and modifications at the receiver are small. Simulation results show that the presented approach can improve the performance by up to 1dB for 256-QAM on AWGN channels
For a layered probabilistic shaping (PS) scheme with a general decoding metric, an achievable rate is derived using Gallager's error exponent approach and the concept of achievable code rates is introduced. Several instances for specific decoding metrics are discussed, including bit-metric decoding, interleaved coded modulation, and hard-decision decoding. It is shown that important previously known achievable rates can also be achieved by layered PS. A practical instance of layered PS is the recently proposed probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS).
Probabilistic shaping of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used to enhance the sensitivity of an optical communication system. Sensitivity gains of 0.43 dB and 0.8 dB are demonstrated in back-to-back experiments by shaping of 16QAM and 64QAM, respectively. Further, numerical simulations are used to prove the robustness of probabilistic shaping to a mismatch between the constellation used and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the channel. It is found that, accepting a 0.1 dB SNR penalty, only four shaping distributions are required to support these gains for 64QAM.
Probabilistic Amplitude Shaping (PAS) is a coded-modulation scheme in which the encoder is a concatenation of a distribution matcher with a systematic Forward Error Correction (FEC) code. For reduced computational complexity the decoder can be chosen as a concatenation of a mismatched FEC decoder and dematcher. This work studies the theoretic limits of PAS. The classical joint source-channel coding (JSCC) setup is modified to include systematic FEC and the mismatched FEC decoder. At each step error exponents and achievable rates for the corresponding setup are derived.
A new approach for combining non-binary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) codes with higher-order modulation and probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) is presented. Instead of symbol-metric decoding (SMD), a bit-metric decoder (BMD) is used so that matching the field order of the non-binary code to the constellation size is not needed, which increases the flexibility of the coding scheme. Information rates, density evolution thresholds and finite-length simulations show that the flexibility comes at no loss of performance if PAS is used.
Performance trade-offs between linear shaping and nonlinear tolerance of the recently introduced 4D orthant-symmetric 128-ary modulation format are investigated. Numerical simulations show 9.3% reach increase with respect to the 7b4D-2A8PSK format and probabilistically-shaped 16QAM with short blocklength.
In this paper, we propose a geometric shaping (GS) strategy to design 8, 16, 32 and 64-ary modulation formats for the optical fibre channel impaired by both additive white Gaussian (AWGN) and phase noise. The constellations were optimised to maximise generalised mutual information (GMI) using a mismatched channel model. The presented formats demonstrate an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tolerance in high phase noise regimes when compared with their quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) or AWGN-optimised counterparts. By putting the optimisation results in the context of the 400ZR impleme…
In this paper, probabilistic shaping is numerically and experimentally investigated for increasing the transmission reach of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communication system employing quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). An optimized probability mass function (PMF) of the QAM symbols is first found from a modified Blahut-Arimoto algorithm for the optical channel. A turbo coded bit interleaved coded modulation system is then applied, which relies on many-to-one labeling to achieve the desired PMF, thereby achieving shaping gain. Pilot symbols at rate at most 2% are used for …
We present a novel autoencoder-based learning of joint geometric and probabilistic constellation shaping for coded-modulation systems. It can maximize either the mutual information (for symbol-metric decoding) or the generalized mutual information (for bit-metric decoding).
In this work, geometric shaping (GS) and probabilistic shaping (PS) for the AWGN channel is reviewed. Both approaches are investigated in terms of symbol-metric decoding (SMD) and bit-metric decoding (BMD). For GS, an optimization algorithm based on differential evolution is formulated. Achievable rate analysis reveals that GS suffers from a 0.4 dB performance degradation compared to PS when BMD is used. Forward-error correction simulations of the ATSC 3.0 modulation and coding formats (modcods) confirm the theoretical findings. In particular, PS enables seamless rate adaptation with one singl…
In this paper, we investigate the optimal probabilistic constellation shaping design for covert communication systems from a practical view. Different from conventional covert communications with equiprobable constellations modulation, we propose nonequiprobable constellations modulation schemes to further enhance the covert rate. Specifically, we derive covert rate expressions for practical discrete constellation inputs for the first time. Then, we study the covert rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the constellation distribution and power allocation. In particular, an approximat…
We consider probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) as a means of increasing the spectral efficiency of fiber-optic communication systems. In contrast to previous works in the literature, we consider probabilistic shaping with hard decision decoding (HDD). In particular, we apply the PAS recently introduced by Böcherer \emph{et al.} to a coded modulation (CM) scheme with bit-wise HDD that uses a staircase code as the forward error correction code. We show that the CM scheme with PAS and staircase codes yields significant gains in spectral efficiency with respect to the baseline scheme using a st…
A new polar coding scheme for higher order modulation is presented. The proposed scheme is based on multi-level coding (MLC) with natural labeling, where the bit-level corresponding to the sign-bit is generated in dependence on the previous bit-levels, such that the modulated symbols are distributed according to a target non-uniform distribution resulting in a shaping gain. This is realized by replacing the polar encoder in the sign-bit level by a successive cancellation (SC) decoder, such that the overall complexity is not increased compared to a conventional MLC scheme with polar codes. Nume…
A pragmatic coded modulation system is presented that incorporates signal shaping and exploits the excellent performance and efficient high-speed decoding architecture of staircase codes. Reliable communication within 0.62 bits/s/Hz of the estimated capacity (per polarization) of a system with L=2000 km is provided by the proposed system, with an error floor below 1E-20. Also, it is shown that digital backpropagation increases the achievable spectral efficiencies---relative to linear equalization---by 0.55 to 0.75 bits/s/Hz per polarization.
Probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) is a coded modulation strategy in which constellation shaping and channel coding are combined. PAS has attracted considerable attention in both wireless and optical communications. Achievable information rates (AIRs) of PAS have been investigated in the literature using Gallager's error exponent approach. In particular, it has been shown that PAS achieves the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise channel (Böcherer, 2018). In this work, we revisit the capacity-achieving property of PAS and derive AIRs using weak typicality. Our objective is to provi…
A class of circular 64-QAM that combines 'geometric' and 'probabilistic' shaping aspects is presented. It is compared to square 64-QAM in back-to-back, single-channel, and WDM transmission experiments. First, for the linear AWGN channel model, it permits to operate close to the Shannon limits for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios. Second, WDM simulations over several hundreds of kilometers show that the obtained signal-to-noise ratios are equivalent to - or slightly exceed - those of probabilistic shaped 64-QAM. Third, for real-life validation purpose, an experimental comparison with unsh…
In this letter, we propose a symbol-wise puncturing scheme to support hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) integrated probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS). To prevent the probability distribution distortion caused by the traditional sequential puncturing and realize the promised gain of PAS, we perform symbol-wise puncturing on the label sequence of the shaped modulation symbols. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed puncturing scheme achieves a stable shaping gain across the signal-to-noise ratio of at least 0.6 dB compared with the uniform case under the same throughput, while…
After the pursuit of seventy years, the invention of polar codes indicates that we have found the first capacity-achieving coding with low complexity construction and decoding, which is the great breakthrough of the coding theory in the past two decades. In this survey, we retrospect the history of polar codes and summarize the advancement in the past ten years. First, the primary principle of channel polarization is investigated such that the basic construction, coding method, and classic successive cancellation (SC) decoding are reviewed. Second, in order to improve the performance of the fi…
Achievable information rates (AIRs) of wideband optical communication systems using ~40 nm (~5 THz) EDFA and ~100 nm (~12.5 THz) distributed Raman amplification are estimated based on a first-order perturbation analysis. The AIRs of each individual channel have been evaluated for DP-64QAM, DP-256QAM, and DP-1024QAM modulation formats. The impact of full-field nonlinear compensation (FF-NLC) and probabilistically shaped constellations using a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution were studied and compared to electronic dispersion compensation. It is found that a probabilistically shaped DP-1024QAM con…
The combination of source coding with decoder side-information (Wyner-Ziv problem) and channel coding with encoder side-information (Gel'fand-Pinsker problem) can be optimally solved using the separation principle. In this work we show an alternative scheme for the quadratic-Gaussian case, which merges source and channel coding. This scheme achieves the optimal performance by a applying modulo-lattice modulation to the analog source. Thus it saves the complexity of quantization and channel decoding, and remains with the task of "shaping" only. Furthermore, for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR),…
Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) and Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (OQPSK) are two well accepted modulation techniques used in Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system. The Pulse Shaping Filters play an important role in digital transmission. The type of Pulse Shaping Filter used, and its behavior would influence the performance of the communication system. This in turn, would have an effect on the performance of the Mobile Communication system, in which the digital communication technique has been employed. In this paper we have presented comparative study of some performance pa…
This paper studies the impact of probabilistic shaping on effective signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and achievable information rates (AIRs) in a back-to-back configuration and in unrepeated nonlinear fiber transmissions. For back-to-back, various shaped quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) distributions are found to have the same implementation penalty as uniform input. By demonstrating in transmission experiments that shaped QAM input leads to lower effective SNR than uniform input at a fixed average launch power, we experimentally confirm that shaping enhances the fiber nonlinearities. Howeve…
Probabilistic shaping for intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) links is discussed and a peak power constraint determined by the limited modulation extinction ratio (ER) of optical modulators is introduced. The input distribution of 4-ary unipolar pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols is optimized for short-reach transmission links without optical amplification nor in-line dispersion compensation. The resulting distribution is symmetric around its mean allowing to use probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) to generate symbols that are protected by forward error correction (FEC) a…
In this work, we construct energy-efficient variable-to-fixed length (V2F), fixed-to-variable length (F2V), and variable-to-variable length (V2V) prefix-free codes, which are optimal (or near-optimal) in the sense that no (or few) other codes with the size can achieve a smaller energy per code letter for the same entropy rate. Under stringent constraints of 4096 entries or below per codebook, the constructed codes yield an energy per code letter within a few tenths of a dB of the unconstrained theoretic lower bound, across a wide range of entropy rates with a very fine granularity. We also pro…
