In this work, we construct energy-efficient variable-to-fixed length (V2F), fixed-to-variable length (F2V), and variable-to-variable length (V2V) prefix-free codes, which are optimal (or near-optimal) in the sense that no (or few) other codes with the size can achieve a smaller energy per code letter for the same entropy rate. Under stringent constraints of 4096 entries or below per codebook, the constructed codes yield an energy per code letter within a few tenths of a dB of the unconstrained theoretic lower bound, across a wide range of entropy rates with a very fine granularity. We also propose a framing method that allows variable-length codes to be transmitted using a fixed-length frame. The penalty caused by framing is studied using simulations and analysis, showing that the energy per code letter is kept within 0.2 dB of the unconstrained theoretic limit for some tested codes with a large frame length. When framed prefix-free codes are used to implement probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) for communications in the additive white Gaussian noise channel, simulations show that 1.1 dB and 0.65 dB of shaping gains are achieved relative to uniform 8- and 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), respectively.
A new geometric shaping method is proposed, leveraging unsupervised machine learning to optimize the constellation design. The learned constellation mitigates nonlinear effects with gains up to 0.13 bit/4D when trained with a simplified fiber channel model.
We show that separating the in-phase and quadrature component in optimized, machine-learning based demappers of optical communications systems with geometric constellation shaping reduces the required computational complexity whilst retaining their good performance.
We perform geometric constellation shaping with optimized bit labeling using a binary autoencoder including a differential blind phase search (BPS). Our approach enables full end-to-end training of optical coherent transceivers taking into account the digital signal processing.
We present a novel method to investigate the effects of varying channel parameters on geometrically shaped constellations for communication systems employing the blind phase search algorithm. We show that introduced asymmetries significantly improve performance if adapted to changing channel parameters.
We consider the Gaussian channel with power constraint P. A gap exists between the channel capacity and the highest achievable rate of equiprobable uniformly spaced signal. Several approaches enable to overcome this limitation such as constellations with non-uniform probability or constellation shaping. In this letter, we focus on constellation shaping. We give a construction of amplitude and phase-shift keying (APSK) constellations with equiprobable signaling that achieve the Gaussian capacity as the number of constellation points goes to infinity.
In this paper, an unsupervised machine learning method for geometric constellation shaping is investigated. By embedding a differentiable fiber channel model within two neural networks, the learning algorithm is optimizing for a geometric constellation shape. The learned constellations yield improved performance to state-of-the-art geometrically shaped constellations, and include an implicit trade-off between amplification noise and nonlinear effects. Further, the method allows joint optimization of system parameters, such as the optimal launch power, simultaneously with the constellation shap…
In this paper, we investigate the optimal probabilistic constellation shaping design for covert communication systems from a practical view. Different from conventional covert communications with equiprobable constellations modulation, we propose nonequiprobable constellations modulation schemes to further enhance the covert rate. Specifically, we derive covert rate expressions for practical discrete constellation inputs for the first time. Then, we study the covert rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the constellation distribution and power allocation. In particular, an approximat…

The choice of constellations largely affects the performance of communication systems. When designing constellations, both the locations and probability of occurrence of the points can be optimized. These approaches are referred to as geometric and probabilistic shaping, respectively. Usually, the geometry of the constellation is fixed, e.g., quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used. In such cases, the achievable information rate can still be improved by probabilistic shaping. In this work, we show how autoencoders can be leveraged to perform probabilistic shaping of constellations. We de…
We present a novel autoencoder-based learning of joint geometric and probabilistic constellation shaping for coded-modulation systems. It can maximize either the mutual information (for symbol-metric decoding) or the generalized mutual information (for bit-metric decoding).
An energy-efficient approach is presented for shaping a bit-interleaved low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded amplitude phase-shift keying (APSK) system. A subset of the interleaved bits output by a binary LDPC encoder are passed through a nonlinear shaping encoder whose output is more likely to be a zero than a one. The "shaping" bits are used to select from among a plurality of subconstellations, while the unshaped bits are used to select the symbol within the subconstellation. Because the shaping bits are biased, symbols from lower-energy subconstellations are selected more frequently than …
The joint design of input constellation and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes to approach the symmetric capacity of the two-user Gaussian multiple access channel is studied. More specifically, multilevel coding is employed at each user to construct a high-order input constellation and the constellations of the users are jointly designed so as to maximize the multiuser shaping gain. At the receiver, each layer of the multilevel coding is jointly decoded among users, while successive cancellation is employed across layers. The LDPC code employed by each user in each layer is designed using E…
Nonlinear precoding and pulse shaping are jointly considered in multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with low-resolution D/A-converters (DACs) in terms of algorithmic approach as well as large system performance. Two design criteria are investigated: the mean {squared} error (MSE) with active constellation extension (ACE) and the symbol error rate (SER). Both formulations are solved based on a modified version of the generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) algorithm. Furthermore, theoretical performance results are derived based on the state evolution analysi…
In this paper, we propose a geometric shaping (GS) strategy to design 8, 16, 32 and 64-ary modulation formats for the optical fibre channel impaired by both additive white Gaussian (AWGN) and phase noise. The constellations were optimised to maximise generalised mutual information (GMI) using a mismatched channel model. The presented formats demonstrate an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tolerance in high phase noise regimes when compared with their quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) or AWGN-optimised counterparts. By putting the optimisation results in the context of the 400ZR impleme…
This paper presents design methods for highly efficient optimisation of geometrically shaped constellations to maximise data throughput in optical communications. It describes methods to analytically calculate the information-theoretical loss and the gradient of this loss as a function of the input constellation shape. The gradients of the \ac{MI} and \ac{GMI} are critical to the optimisation of geometrically-shaped constellations. It presents the analytical derivative of the achievable information rate metrics with respect to the input constellation. The proposed method allows for improved de…
Constellation shaping is an energy-efficient strategy involving the transmission of lower-energy signals more frequently than higher-energy signals. Previous work has shown that shaping is particularly effective when used with coded amplitude phase-shift keying (APSK), a modulation that has been popularized recently due to its inclusion in the DVB-S2 standard. While shaped APSK can provide significant gains when used with standard off-the-shelf LDPC codes, such as the codes in the DVB-S2 standard, additional non-negligible gains can be achieved by optimizing the LDPC code with respect to the s…
The capacity achieving probability mass function (PMF) of a finite signal constellation with an average power constraint is in most cases non-uniform. A common approach to generate non-uniform input PMFs is Huffman shaping, which consists of first approximating the capacity achieving PMF by a sampled Gaussian density and then to calculate the Huffman code of the sampled Gaussian density. The Huffman code is then used as a prefix-free modulation code. This approach showed good results in practice, can however lead to a significant gap to capacity. In this work, a method is proposed that efficie…
As communication systems are foreseen to enable new services such as joint communication and sensing and utilize parts of the sub-THz spectrum, the design of novel waveforms that can support these emerging applications becomes increasingly challenging. We present in this work an end-to-end learning approach to design waveforms through joint learning of pulse shaping and constellation geometry, together with a neural network (NN)-based receiver. Optimization is performed to maximize an achievable information rate, while satisfying constraints on out-of-band emission and power envelope. Our resu…
In wireless communication systems, there are many stages for signal transmission. Among them, mapping and demapping convert a sequence of bits into a sequence of complex numbers and vice versa. This operation is performed by a system of constellations~ -- by a set of labeled points on the complex plane. Usually, the geometry of the constellation is fixed, and constellation points are uniformly spaced, e.g., the same quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used in a wide range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). By eliminating the uniformity of constellations, it is possible to achieve greater val…
In this paper, probabilistic shaping is numerically and experimentally investigated for increasing the transmission reach of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communication system employing quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). An optimized probability mass function (PMF) of the QAM symbols is first found from a modified Blahut-Arimoto algorithm for the optical channel. A turbo coded bit interleaved coded modulation system is then applied, which relies on many-to-one labeling to achieve the desired PMF, thereby achieving shaping gain. Pilot symbols at rate at most 2% are used for …
The problem of communicating over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with lattice codes is addressed in this paper. Theoretically, Voronoi constellations have proved to yield very powerful lattice codes when the fine/coding lattice is AWGN-good and the coarse/shaping lattice has an optimal shaping gain. However, achieving Shannon capacity with these premises and practically implementable encoding algorithms is in general not an easy task. In this work, a new way to encode and demap Construction-A Voronoi lattice codes is presented. As a meaningful application of this scheme, the …

Autoencoder-based deep learning is applied to jointly optimize geometric and probabilistic constellation shaping for optical coherent communication. The optimized constellation shaping outperforms the 256 QAM Maxwell-Boltzmann probabilistic distribution with extra 0.05 bits/4D-symbol mutual information for 64 GBd transmission over 170 km SMF link.
Achievable information rates (AIRs) of wideband optical communication systems using ~40 nm (~5 THz) EDFA and ~100 nm (~12.5 THz) distributed Raman amplification are estimated based on a first-order perturbation analysis. The AIRs of each individual channel have been evaluated for DP-64QAM, DP-256QAM, and DP-1024QAM modulation formats. The impact of full-field nonlinear compensation (FF-NLC) and probabilistically shaped constellations using a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution were studied and compared to electronic dispersion compensation. It is found that a probabilistically shaped DP-1024QAM con…
A new approach for combining non-binary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) codes with higher-order modulation and probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) is presented. Instead of symbol-metric decoding (SMD), a bit-metric decoder (BMD) is used so that matching the field order of the non-binary code to the constellation size is not needed, which increases the flexibility of the coding scheme. Information rates, density evolution thresholds and finite-length simulations show that the flexibility comes at no loss of performance if PAS is used.
The geometry of dual-polarization four-dimensional constellations is optimized in the optical fiber channel using a recent nonlinear interference model. A 0.27 bit/4D rate gain and 13% reach increase are attained compared to polarization-multiplexed formats.
Probabilistic shaping of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used to enhance the sensitivity of an optical communication system. Sensitivity gains of 0.43 dB and 0.8 dB are demonstrated in back-to-back experiments by shaping of 16QAM and 64QAM, respectively. Further, numerical simulations are used to prove the robustness of probabilistic shaping to a mismatch between the constellation used and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the channel. It is found that, accepting a 0.1 dB SNR penalty, only four shaping distributions are required to support these gains for 64QAM.
In this paper we show that any sequence of infinite lattice constellations which is good for the unconstrained Gaussian channel can be shaped into a capacity-achieving sequence of codes for the power-constrained Gaussian channel under lattice decoding and non-uniform signalling. Unlike previous results in the literature, our scheme holds with no extra condition on the lattices (e.g. quantization-goodness or vanishing flatness factor), thus establishing a direct implication between AWGN-goodness, in the sense of Poltyrev, and capacity-achieving codes. Our analysis uses properties of the discret…
The construction of optimal non-uniform mappings for discrete input memoryless channels (DIMCs) is investigated. An efficient algorithm to find optimal mappings is proposed and the rate by which a target distribution is approached is investigated. The results are applied to non-uniform mappings for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with finite signal constellations. The mappings found by the proposed methods outperform those obtained via a central limit theorem approach as suggested in the literature.
Autoencoder-based geometric shaping is proposed that includes optimizing bit mappings. Up to 0.2 bits/QAM symbol gain in GMI is achieved for a variety of data rates and in the presence of transceiver impairments. The gains can be harvested with standard binary FEC at no cost w.r.t. conventional BICM.
We introduce a trainable coded modulation scheme that enables joint optimization of the bit-wise mutual information (BMI) through probabilistic shaping, geometric shaping, bit labeling, and demapping for a specific channel model and for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Compared to probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS), the proposed approach is not restricted to symmetric probability distributions, can be optimized for any channel model, and works with any code rate $k/m$, $m$ being the number of bits per channel use and $k$ an integer within the range from $1$ to $m-1$. The propo…
Probabilistic shaping (PS) is a promising technique to approach the Shannon limit using typical constellation geometries. However, the impact of PS on the chain of signal processing algorithms of a coherent receiver still needs further investigation. In this work we study the interplay of PS and phase recovery using the blind phase search (BPS) algorithm, which is widely used in optical communications systems. We first investigate a supervised phase search (SPS) algorithm as a theoretical upper bound on the BPS performance, assuming perfect decisions. It is shown that PS influences the SPS alg…
In this report, we study communication over an additive white Gaussian noise channel with a fixed signal constellation. We measure how much information we can send through this channel and how to improve the rate of communication by changing the input probability distribution. More precisely, we study the mutual information obtained from the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, the Blahut-Arimoto algorithm and a constrained version of the Blahut-Arimoto algorithm. We emphasise the fact that the Maxwell--Boltzmann distribution is not optimal. We also observe that the Blahut-Arimoto algorithm does no…
We consider probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) as a means of increasing the spectral efficiency of fiber-optic communication systems. In contrast to previous works in the literature, we consider probabilistic shaping with hard decision decoding (HDD). In particular, we apply the PAS recently introduced by Böcherer \emph{et al.} to a coded modulation (CM) scheme with bit-wise HDD that uses a staircase code as the forward error correction code. We show that the CM scheme with PAS and staircase codes yields significant gains in spectral efficiency with respect to the baseline scheme using a st…
