Probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) can flexibly vary the spectral efficiency (SE) of fiber-optic systems. In this paper, we demonstrate the application of PAS to bit-wise hard decision decoding (HDD) of product codes (PCs) by finding the necessary conditions to select the PC component codes. We show that PAS with PCs and HDD yields gains up to $2.7$ dB and SE improvement up to approximately $1$ bit/channel use compared to using PCs with uniform signaling and HDD. Furthermore, we employ the recently introduced iterative bounded distance decoding with combined reliability of PCs to improve performance of PAS with PCs and HDD.
Product distribution matching (PDM) is proposed to generate target distributions over large alphabets by combining the output of several parallel distribution matchers (DMs) with smaller output alphabets. The parallel architecture of PDM enables low-complexity and high-throughput implementation. PDM is used as a shaping device for probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS). For 64-ASK and a spectral efficiency of 4.5 bits per channel use (bpcu), PDM is as power efficient as a single full-fledged DM. It is shown how PDM enables PAS for parallel channels present in multi-carrier systems like digital …
Spatial multiplexing (SM) gains in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) cellular networks are limited when used in combination with ultra-dense small cell networks. This limitation is due to large spatial correlation among channel pairs. More specifically, it is due to i) line-of-sight (LOS) communication between user equipment (UE) and base station (BS) and ii) in-sufficient spacing between antenna elements. We propose to shape transmit signals at adjacent antennas with distinct interpolating filters which introduces pulse shaping diversity eventually leading to improved SINR and throughput …
Probabilistic shaping of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used to enhance the sensitivity of an optical communication system. Sensitivity gains of 0.43 dB and 0.8 dB are demonstrated in back-to-back experiments by shaping of 16QAM and 64QAM, respectively. Further, numerical simulations are used to prove the robustness of probabilistic shaping to a mismatch between the constellation used and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the channel. It is found that, accepting a 0.1 dB SNR penalty, only four shaping distributions are required to support these gains for 64QAM.
An LDPC coded modulation scheme with probabilistic shaping, optimized interleavers and noniterative demapping is proposed. Full-field simulations show an increase in transmission distance by 8% compared to uniformly distributed input.
Probabilistic shaping based on constant composition distribution matching (CCDM) has received considerable attention as a way to increase the capacity of fiber optical communication systems. CCDM suffers from significant rate loss at short blocklengths and requires long blocklengths to achieve high shaping gain, which makes its implementation very challenging. In this paper, we propose to use enumerative sphere shaping (ESS) and investigate its performance for the nonlinear fiber optical channel. ESS has lower rate loss than CCDM at the same shaping rate, which makes it a suitable candidate to…
A class of circular 64-QAM that combines 'geometric' and 'probabilistic' shaping aspects is presented. It is compared to square 64-QAM in back-to-back, single-channel, and WDM transmission experiments. First, for the linear AWGN channel model, it permits to operate close to the Shannon limits for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios. Second, WDM simulations over several hundreds of kilometers show that the obtained signal-to-noise ratios are equivalent to - or slightly exceed - those of probabilistic shaped 64-QAM. Third, for real-life validation purpose, an experimental comparison with unsh…
This paper presents design methods for highly efficient optimisation of geometrically shaped constellations to maximise data throughput in optical communications. It describes methods to analytically calculate the information-theoretical loss and the gradient of this loss as a function of the input constellation shape. The gradients of the \ac{MI} and \ac{GMI} are critical to the optimisation of geometrically-shaped constellations. It presents the analytical derivative of the achievable information rate metrics with respect to the input constellation. The proposed method allows for improved de…
In this letter, we propose a symbol-wise puncturing scheme to support hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) integrated probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS). To prevent the probability distribution distortion caused by the traditional sequential puncturing and realize the promised gain of PAS, we perform symbol-wise puncturing on the label sequence of the shaped modulation symbols. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed puncturing scheme achieves a stable shaping gain across the signal-to-noise ratio of at least 0.6 dB compared with the uniform case under the same throughput, while…

Autoencoder-based deep learning is applied to jointly optimize geometric and probabilistic constellation shaping for optical coherent communication. The optimized constellation shaping outperforms the 256 QAM Maxwell-Boltzmann probabilistic distribution with extra 0.05 bits/4D-symbol mutual information for 64 GBd transmission over 170 km SMF link.
We transmit probabilistic enumerative sphere shaped dual-polarization 64-QAM at 350Gbit/s/channel over 1610km SSMF using a short blocklength of 200. A reach increase of 15% over constant composition distribution matching with identical blocklength is demonstrated.
Achievable information rates (AIRs) of wideband optical communication systems using ~40 nm (~5 THz) EDFA and ~100 nm (~12.5 THz) distributed Raman amplification are estimated based on a first-order perturbation analysis. The AIRs of each individual channel have been evaluated for DP-64QAM, DP-256QAM, and DP-1024QAM modulation formats. The impact of full-field nonlinear compensation (FF-NLC) and probabilistically shaped constellations using a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution were studied and compared to electronic dispersion compensation. It is found that a probabilistically shaped DP-1024QAM con…
Different aspects of probabilistic shaping for a multi-span optical communication system are studied. First, a numerical analysis of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel investigates the effect of using a small number of input probability mass functions (PMFs) for a range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), instead of optimizing the constellation shaping for each SNR. It is shown that if a small penalty of at most 0.1 dB SNR to the full shaping gain is acceptable, just two shaped PMFs are required per quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) over a large SNR range. For a multi-span wave…
Pulse shaping for coherent optical fiber communication has been an active area of research for the past decade. Most of the early schemes are based on classic Nyquist pulse shaping that was originally intended for linear channels. The best known classic scheme, the split digital back-propagation (DBP), uses joint pre-distortion and post equalization and hence, a nonlinear transmitter (TX); it, however, suffers from spectral broadening on the fiber due to the Kerr-effect. With the advent of deep learning in communications, it has been realized that an Autoencoder can learn to communicate effici…
Constellation shaping is a practical and effective technique to improve the performance and the rate adaptivity of optical communication systems. In principle, it could also be used to mitigate the impact of nonlinear effects, possibly increasing the information rate beyond the current limit dictated by fiber nonlinearity. However, this appealing idea is frustrated by the difficulty of designing an effective shaping strategy that takes into account the nonlinearity and long memory of the fiber channel, as well as the possible interplay with other nonlinearity mitigation strategies. As a result…
In this paper, an unsupervised machine learning method for geometric constellation shaping is investigated. By embedding a differentiable fiber channel model within two neural networks, the learning algorithm is optimizing for a geometric constellation shape. The learned constellations yield improved performance to state-of-the-art geometrically shaped constellations, and include an implicit trade-off between amplification noise and nonlinear effects. Further, the method allows joint optimization of system parameters, such as the optimal launch power, simultaneously with the constellation shap…
In this paper, we propose a practical adaptive coding modulation scheme to approach the capacity of free-space optical (FSO) channels with intensity modulation/direct detection based on probabilistic shaping. The encoder efficiently adapts the transmission rate to the signal-to-noise ratio, accounting for the fading induced by the atmospheric turbulence. The transponder can support an arbitrarily large number of transmission modes using a low complexity channel encoder with a small set of supported rates. Hence, it can provide a solution for FSO backhauling in terrestrial and satellite communi…
We study low-complexity iterative decoding algorithms for product codes. We revisit two algorithms recently proposed by the authors based on bounded distance decoding (BDD) of the component codes that improve the performance of conventional iterative BDD (iBDD). We then propose a novel decoding algorithm that is based on generalized minimum distance decoding of the component codes. The proposed algorithm closes over 50% of the performance gap between iBDD and turbo product decoding (TPD) based on the Chase-Pyndiah algorithm. Moreover, the algorithm only leads to a limited increase in complexit…
We perform geometric constellation shaping with optimized bit labeling using a binary autoencoder including a differential blind phase search (BPS). Our approach enables full end-to-end training of optical coherent transceivers taking into account the digital signal processing.
