In this paper a new primal-dual mixed finite element method is introduced, aimed to model multiscale problems with several geometric subregions in the domain of interest. In each of these regions porous media fluid flow takes place, but governed by physical parameters at a different scale; additionally, a fluid exchange through contact interfaces occurs between neighboring regions. The well-posedness of the primal-dual mixed finite element formulation on bounded simply connected polygonal domains of the plane is presented. Next, the convergence of the discrete solution to the exact solution of the problem is discussed, together with the convergence rate analysis. Finally, the numerical examples illustrate the method's capabilities to handle multiscale problems and interface discontinuities as well as experimental rates of convergence.

We construct mesh-independent and parameter-robust monolithic solvers for the coupled primal Stokes-Darcy problem. Three different formulations and their discretizations in terms of conforming and non-conforming finite element methods and finite volume methods are considered. In each case, robust preconditioners are derived using a unified theoretical framework. In particular, the suggested preconditioners utilize operators in fractional Sobolev spaces. Numerical experiments demonstrate the parameter-robustness of the proposed solvers.
Numerical simulations of flow and transport in porous media usually rely on hybrid-dimensional models, i.e., the fracture is considered as objects of a lower dimension compared to the embedding matrix. Such models are usually combined with non-conforming discretizations as they avoid the inherent difficulties associated with the generation of meshes that explicitly resolve fractures-matrix interfaces. However, non-conforming discretizations demand a more complicated coupling of different sub-models and may require special care to ensure conservative fluxes. We propose a novel approach for the …
In this paper, we investigate Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) methods for conforming Galerkin discretizations on multi-patch computational domains with inexact subdomain solvers. Recently, the authors have proven a condition number estimate for a IETI-DP method using sparse LU factorizations for the subdomain problems that is explicit, among other parameters, in the grid size and the spline degree. In the present paper, we replace the sparse LU factorizations by fast diagonalization based preconditioners to get a faster IETI-DP method while maintaining the same e…
We consider dual-primal isogeometric tearing and interconnection (IETI-DP) solvers for multi-patch geometries in Isogeometric Analysis. Recently, the authors have published a convergence analysis for those solvers that is explicit in both the grid size and the spline degree for conforming discretizations of two dimensional computational domains. In the present paper, we shortly revisit these results and provide numerical experiments that indicate that similar results may hold for three dimensional domains.
We study Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) solvers for non-conforming multi-patch discretizations of a generalized Poisson problem. We realize the coupling between the patches using a symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (SIPG) approach. Previously, we have assumed that the interfaces between patches always consist of whole edges. In this paper, we drop this requirement and allow T-junctions. This extension is vital for the consideration of sliding interfaces, for example between the rotor and the stator of an electrical motor. One critical part for th…
In this paper, we extend the reinterpreted discrete fracture model for flow simulation of fractured porous media containing flow blocking barriers on non-conforming meshes. The methodology of the approach is to modify the traditional Darcy's law into the hybrid-dimensional Darcy's law where fractures and barriers are represented as Dirac-delta functions contained in the permeability tensor and resistance tensor, respectively. As a natural extension of the reinterpreted discrete fracture model for highly conductive fractures, this model is able to account for the influence of both highly conduc…
Flow in fractured porous media is modeled frequently by discrete fracture-matrix approaches where fractures are treated as dimensionally reduced manifolds. Generalizing earlier work we focus on two-phase flow in time-dependent fracture geometries including the fracture's aperture. We present the derivation of a reduced model for immiscible two-phase flow in porous media. For the reduced model we present a fully conforming finite-volume discretization coupled with a moving-mesh method. This method permits arbitrary movement of facets of the triangulation while being fully conservative. In numer…
Novel $H^\mathrm{dev}(\mathrm{Curl})$-conforming elements on regular triangulations and Clough--Tocher splits for the planar relaxed micromorphic model
We consider a two-phase Darcy flow in a fractured porous medium consisting in a matrix flow coupled with a tangential flow in the fractures, described as a network of planar surfaces. This flow model is also coupled with the mechanical deformation of the matrix assuming that the fractures are open and filled by the fluids, as well as small deformations and a linear elastic constitutive law. The model is discretized using the gradient discretization method [26], which covers a large class of conforming and non conforming schemes. This framework allows for a generic convergence analysis of the c…

We propose a goal-oriented mesh-adaptive algorithm for a finite element method stabilized via residual minimization on dual discontinuous-Galerkin norms. By solving a saddle-point problem, this residual minimization delivers a stable continuous approximation to the solution on each mesh instance and a residual projection onto a broken polynomial space, which is a robust error estimator to minimize the discrete energy norm via automatic mesh refinement. In this work, we propose and analyze a goal-oriented adaptive algorithm for this stable residual minimization. We solve the primal and adjoint …
This work focuses on the development of a non-conforming domain decomposition method for the approximation of PDEs based on weakly imposed transmission conditions: the continuity of the global solution is enforced by a discrete number of Lagrange multipliers defined over the interfaces of adjacent subdomains. The method falls into the class of primal hybrid methods, which also include the well-known mortar method. Differently from the mortar method, we discretize the space of basis functions on the interface by spectral approximation independently of the discretization of the two adjacent doma…
In this work we present a generic framework for non-conforming finite elements on polytopal meshes, characterised by elements that can be generic polygons/polyhedra. We first present the functional framework on the example of a linear elliptic problem representing a single-phase flow in porous medium. This framework gathers a wide variety of possible non-conforming methods, and an error estimate is provided for this simple model. We then turn to the application of the functional framework to the case of a steady degenerate elliptic equation, for which a mass-lumping technique is required; here…
The gradient discretisation method (GDM) is a generic framework for designing and analysing numerical schemes for diffusion models. In this paper, we study the GDM for the porous medium equation, including fast diffusion and slow diffusion models, and a concentration-dependent diffusion tensor. Using discrete functional analysis techniques, we establish a strong $L^2$-convergence of the approximate gradients and a uniform-in-time convergence for the approximate solution, without assuming non-physical regularity assumptions on the data or continuous solution. Being established in the generic GD…

In this paper, we present and analyze a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for Darcy flows in fractured porous media on fairly general meshes. A staggered discontinuous Galerkin method and a standard conforming finite element method with appropriate inclusion of interface conditions are exploited for the bulk region and the fracture, respectively. Our current analysis weakens the usual assumption on the polygonal mesh, which can integrate more general meshes such as elements with arbitrarily small edges into our theoretical framework. We prove the optimal convergence estimates in $L^2$ er…
In this paper we study a stationary double-diffusive natural convection problem in porous media given by a Navier-Stokes/Darcy type system, for describing the velocity and the pressure, coupled to a vector advection-diffusion equation describing the heat and substance concentration, of a viscous fluid in a porous media with physical boundary conditions. The model problem is rewritten in terms of a first-order system, without the pressure, based on the introduction of the strain tensor and a nonlinear pseudo-stress tensor in the fluid equations. After a variational approach, the resulting weak …
The Biot problem of poroelasticity is extended by Signorini contact conditions. The resulting Biot contact problem is formulated and analyzed as a two field variational inequality problem of a perturbed saddle point structure. We present an a priori error analysis for a general as well as for a $hp$-FE discretization including convergence and guaranteed convergence rates for the latter. Moreover, we derive a family of reliable and efficient residual based a posteriori error estimators, and elaborate how a simple and efficient primal-dual active set solver can be applied to solve the discrete G…

Modeling flows in fractured porous media is important in applications. One main challenge in numerical simulation is that the flow is strongly influenced by the fractures, so that the solutions typically contain complex features, which require high computational grid resolutions. Instead of using uniformly fine mesh, a more computationally efficient adaptively refined mesh is desirable. In this paper we design and analyze a novel residual-type a posteriori error estimator for staggered DG methods on general polygonal meshes for Darcy flows in fractured porous media. The method can handle fairl…
A posteriori error estimates and adaptivity for locally conservative methods. Inexpensive implementation and evaluation, polytopal meshes, iterative linearization and algebraic solvers, and applications to complex porous media flows
The coupled Darcy-Stokes problem is widely used for modeling fluid transport in physical systems consisting of a porous part and a free part. In this work we consider preconditioners for monolitic solution algorithms of the coupled Darcy-Stokes problem, where the Darcy problem is in primal form. We employ the operator preconditioning framework and utilize a fractional solver at the interface between the problems to obtain order optimal schemes that are robust with respect to the material parameters, i.e. the permeability, viscosity and Beavers-Joseph-Saffman parameter. Our approach is similar …
In this paper, we develop a convergence theory for Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) solvers for isogeometric multi-patch discretizations of the Poisson problem, where the patches are coupled using discontinuous Galerkin. The presented theory provides condition number bounds that are explicit in the grid sizes h and in the spline degrees p. We give an analysis that holds for various choices for the primal degrees of freedom: vertex values, edge averages, and a combination of both. If only the vertex values or both vertex values and edge averages are taken as primal…
The discrete fracture model (DFM) has been widely used in the simulation of fluid flow in fractured porous media. Traditional DFM uses the so-called hybrid-dimensional approach to treat fractures explicitly as low-dimensional entries (e.g. line entries in 2D media and face entries in 3D media) on the interfaces of matrix cells and then couple the matrix and fracture flow systems together based on the principle of superposition with the fracture thickness used as the dimensional homogeneity factor. Because of this methodology, DFM is considered to be limited on conforming meshes and thus may ra…
We present a comprehensive workflow to simulate single-phase flow and transport in fractured porous media using the discrete fracture matrix approach. The workflow has three primary parts: (1) a method for conforming mesh generation of and around a three-dimensional fracture network, (2) the discretization of the governing equations using a second-order mimetic finite difference method, and (3) implementation of numerical methods for high-performance computing environments. A method to create a conforming Delaunay tetrahedralization of the volume surrounding the fracture network, where the tri…
This paper derives a posteriori error estimates for the mixed numerical approximation of the Laplace eigenvalue problem with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. In particular, the resulting error estimator constitutes an upper bound for the error and is shown to be local efficient. Therefore, we present a reconstruction in the standard $H^1_0$-conforming space for the primal variable of the mixed Laplace eigenvalue problem. This reconstruction is performed locally on a set of vertex patches.
Mixed-dimensional elliptic equations exhibiting a hierarchical structure are commonly used to model problems with high aspect ratio inclusions, such as flow in fractured porous media. We derive general abstract estimates based on the theory of functional a posteriori error estimates, for which guaranteed upper bounds for the primal and dual variables and two-sided bounds for the primal-dual pair are obtained. We improve on the abstract results obtained with the functional approach by proposing four different ways of estimating the residual errors based on the extent the approximate solution ha…
We address the discretization of two-phase Darcy flows in a fractured and deformable porous medium, including frictional contact between the matrix-fracture interfaces. Fractures are described as a network of planar surfaces leading to the so-called mixed- or hybrid-dimensional models. Small displacements and a linear elastic behavior are considered for the matrix. Phase pressures are supposed to be discontinuous at matrix-fracture interfaces, as they provide a better accuracy than continuous pressure models even for high fracture permeabilities. The general gradient discretization framework i…
In the present paper, we propose a Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) approximation for fully non-homogeneous systems of $p$-Navier-Stokes type. On the basis of the primal formulation, we prove well-posedness, stability (a priori estimates), and weak convergence of the method. To this end, we propose a new DG discretization of the convective term and develop an abstract non-conforming theory of pseudo-monotonicity, which is applied to our problem. We also use our approach to treat the $p$-Stokes problem.
This work introduces nodal auxiliary space preconditioners for discretizations of mixed-dimensional partial differential equations. We first consider the continuous setting and generalize the regular decomposition to this setting. With the use of conforming mixed finite element spaces, we then expand these results to the discrete case and obtain a decomposition in terms of nodal Lagrange elements. In turn, nodal preconditioners are proposed analogous to the auxiliary space preconditioners of Hiptmair and Xu (2007). Numerical experiments show the performance of this preconditioner in the contex…
The classical Cauchy continuum theory is suitable to model highly homogeneous materials. However, many materials, such as porous media or metamaterials, exhibit a pronounced microstructure. As a result, the classical continuum theory cannot capture their mechanical behaviour without fully resolving the underlying microstructure. In terms of finite element computations, this can be done by modelling the entire body, including every interior cell. The relaxed micromorphic continuum offers an alternative method by instead enriching the kinematics of the mathematical model. The theory introduces a…
Combining the classical theory of optimal transport with modern operator splitting techniques, we develop a new numerical method for nonlinear, nonlocal partial differential equations, arising in models of porous media, materials science, and biological swarming. Our method proceeds as follows: First, we discretize in time, either via the classical JKO scheme or via a novel Crank-Nicolson type method we introduce. Next, we use the Benamou-Brenier dynamical characterization of the Wasserstein distance to reduce computing the solution of the discrete time equations to solving fully discrete mini…
