We consider dual-primal isogeometric tearing and interconnection (IETI-DP) solvers for multi-patch geometries in Isogeometric Analysis. Recently, the authors have published a convergence analysis for those solvers that is explicit in both the grid size and the spline degree for conforming discretizations of two dimensional computational domains. In the present paper, we shortly revisit these results and provide numerical experiments that indicate that similar results may hold for three dimensional domains.
In this paper, we investigate Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) methods for conforming Galerkin discretizations on multi-patch computational domains with inexact subdomain solvers. Recently, the authors have proven a condition number estimate for a IETI-DP method using sparse LU factorizations for the subdomain problems that is explicit, among other parameters, in the grid size and the spline degree. In the present paper, we replace the sparse LU factorizations by fast diagonalization based preconditioners to get a faster IETI-DP method while maintaining the same e…
We are interested in a fast solver for the Stokes equations, discretized with multi-patch Isogeometric Analysis. In the last years, several inf-sup stable discretizations for the Stokes problem have been proposed, often the analysis was restricted to single-patch domains. We focus on one of the simplest approaches, the isogeometric Taylor--Hood element. We show how stability results for single-patch domains can be carried over to multi-patch domains. While this is possible, the stability strongly depends on the shape of the geometry. We construct a Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Intercon…
We study Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) solvers for non-conforming multi-patch discretizations of a generalized Poisson problem. We realize the coupling between the patches using a symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (SIPG) approach. Previously, we have assumed that the interfaces between patches always consist of whole edges. In this paper, we drop this requirement and allow T-junctions. This extension is vital for the consideration of sliding interfaces, for example between the rotor and the stator of an electrical motor. One critical part for th…
In this paper, we develop a convergence theory for Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) solvers for isogeometric multi-patch discretizations of the Poisson problem, where the patches are coupled using discontinuous Galerkin. The presented theory provides condition number bounds that are explicit in the grid sizes h and in the spline degrees p. We give an analysis that holds for various choices for the primal degrees of freedom: vertex values, edge averages, and a combination of both. If only the vertex values or both vertex values and edge averages are taken as primal…
We construct solvers for an isogeometric multi-patch discretization, where the patches are coupled via a discontinuous Galerkin approach, which allows the consideration of discretizations that do not match on the interfaces. We solve the resulting linear system using a Dual-Primal IsogEometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) method. We are interested in solving the arising patch-local problems using iterative solvers since this allows the reduction of the memory footprint. We solve the patch-local problems approximately using the Fast Diagonalization method, which is known to be robust i…
Recently, the authors have proposed and analyzed isogeometric tearing and interconnecting (IETI-DP) solvers for multi-patch discretizations in Isogeometric Analysis. Conforming and discontinuous Galerkin settings have been considered. In both cases, we have assumed that the interfaces between the patches consist of whole edges. In this paper, we present a generalization that allows us to drop this requirement. This means that the patches can meet in T-junctions, which increases the flexibility of the geometric model significantly. We use vertex-based primal degrees of freedom. For the T-juncti…
We study the convergence behavior of Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) methods for solving large-scale algebraic systems arising from multi-patch Isogeometric Analysis. We focus on the Poisson problem on two dimensional computational domains. We provide a convergence analysis that covers several choices of the primal degrees of freedom: the vertex values, the edge averages, and the combination of both. We derive condition number bounds that show the expected behavior in the grid size h and that are quasi-linear in the spline degree p.
We are interested in a fast solver for linear systems obtained by discretizing the Stokes problem with multi-patch Isogeometric Analysis. We use Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) methods. In resent years, IETI-DPand related methods have been studied extensively, mainly for the Poisson problem. For the Stokes equations, several challenges arise since the corresponding system is not positive definite, but has saddle point structure. Moreover, the Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions have a null-space, consisting of the constant pressure modes. This pos…
Isogeometric Analysis is a high-order discretization method for boundary value problems that uses a number of degrees of freedom which is as small as for a low-order method. Standard isogeometric discretizations require a global parameterization of the computational domain. In non-trivial cases, the domain is decomposed into patches having separate parameterizations and separate discretization spaces. If the discretization spaces agree on the interfaces between the patches, the coupling can be done in a conforming way. Otherwise, non-conforming discretizations (utilizing discontinuous Galerkin…
In this paper we apply the INTERNODES method to solve second order elliptic problems discretized by Isogeometric Analysis methods on non-conforming multiple patches in 2D and 3D geometries. INTERNODES is an interpolation-based method that, on each interface of the configuration, exploits two independent interpolation operators to enforce the continuity of the traces and of the normal derivatives. INTERNODES supports non-conformity on NURBS spaces as well as on geometries. We specify how to set up the interpolation matrices on non-conforming interfaces, how to enforce the continuity of the norm…
Penalty methods have proven to be particularly effective for achieving the required $C^1$-continuity in the context of multi-patch isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shells. Due to their conceptual simplicity, these algorithms are readily applicable to the displacement and rotational coupling of trimmed, non-conforming surfaces. However, the accuracy of the resulting solution depends heavily on the choice of penalty parameters. Furthermore, the selection of these coefficients is generally problem-dependent and is based on a heuristic approach. Moreover, developing a penalty-like procedure that avoids…
Isogeometric Analysis is a spline-based discretization method to partial differential equations which shows the approximation power of a high-order method. The number of degrees of freedom, however, is as small as the number of degrees of freedom of a low-order method. This does not come for free as the original formulation of Isogeometric Analysis requires a global geometry function. Since this is too restrictive for many kinds of applications, the domain is usually decomposed into patches, where each patch is parameterized with its own geometry function. In simpler cases, the patches can be …
This work focuses on the development of a super-penalty strategy based on the $L^2$-projection of suitable coupling terms to achieve $C^1$-continuity between non-conforming multi-patch isogeometric Kirchhoff plates. In particular, the choice of penalty parameters is driven by the underlying perturbed saddle point problem from which the Lagrange multipliers are eliminated and is performed to guarantee the optimal accuracy of the method. Moreover, by construction, the method does not suffer from locking also on very coarse meshes. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposed coupling algorit…

We define a conforming B-spline discretisation of the de Rham complex on multipatch geometries. We introduce and analyse the properties of interpolation operators onto these spaces which commute w.r.t. the surface differential operators. Using these results as a basis, we derive new convergence results of optimal order w.r.t. the respective energy spaces and provide approximation properties of the spline discretisations of trace spaces for application in the theory of isogeometric boundary element methods. Our analysis allows for a straightforward generalisation to finite element methods.

We present a novel method for isogeometric analysis (IGA) to directly work on geometries constructed by Boolean operations including difference (i.e., trimming), union and intersection. Particularly, this work focuses on the union operation, which involves multiple independent, generally non-conforming and trimmed spline patches. Given a series of patches, we overlay one on top of another in a certain order. While the invisible part of each patch is trimmed away, the visible parts of all the patches constitute the entire computational domain. We employ the Nitsche's method to weakly couple ind…
Multi-material problems often exhibit complex geometries along with physical responses presenting large spatial gradients or discontinuities. In these cases, providing high-quality body-fitted finite element analysis meshes and obtaining accurate solutions remain challenging. Immersed boundary techniques provide elegant solutions for such problems. Enrichment methods alleviate the need for generating conforming analysis grids by capturing discontinuities within mesh elements. Additionally, increased accuracy of physical responses and geometry description can be achieved with higher-order appro…
This paper presents an immersed, isogeometric finite element framework to predict the response of multi-material, multi-physics problems with complex geometries using locally refined discretizations. To circumvent the need to generate conformal meshes, this work uses an eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) to discretize the governing equations on non-conforming, embedding meshes. A flexible approach to create truncated hierarchical B-splines discretizations is presented. This approach enables the refinement of each state variable field individually to meet field-specific accuracy requirements…
This work focuses on the development of a non-conforming domain decomposition method for the approximation of PDEs based on weakly imposed transmission conditions: the continuity of the global solution is enforced by a discrete number of Lagrange multipliers defined over the interfaces of adjacent subdomains. The method falls into the class of primal hybrid methods, which also include the well-known mortar method. Differently from the mortar method, we discretize the space of basis functions on the interface by spectral approximation independently of the discretization of the two adjacent doma…
