Mixed-dimensional elliptic equations exhibiting a hierarchical structure are commonly used to model problems with high aspect ratio inclusions, such as flow in fractured porous media. We derive general abstract estimates based on the theory of functional a posteriori error estimates, for which guaranteed upper bounds for the primal and dual variables and two-sided bounds for the primal-dual pair are obtained. We improve on the abstract results obtained with the functional approach by proposing four different ways of estimating the residual errors based on the extent the approximate solution has conservation properties, i.e.: (1) no conservation, (2) subdomain conservation, (3) grid-level conservation, and (4) exact conservation. This treatment results in sharper and fully computable estimates when mass is conserved either at the grid level or exactly, with a comparable structure to those obtained from grid-based a posteriori techniques. We demonstrate the practical effectiveness of our theoretical results through numerical experiments using four different discretization methods for synthetic problems and applications based on benchmarks of flow in fractured porous media.

We present a priori and a posteriori error analysis of a high order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method applied to a semi-linear elliptic problem posed on a piecewise curved, non polygonal domain. We approximate $Ω$ by a polygonal subdomain $Ω_h$ and propose an HDG discretization, which is shown to be optimal under mild assumptions related to the non-linear source term and the distance between the boundaries of the polygonal subdomain $Ω_h$ and the true domain $Ω$. Moreover, a local non-linear post-processing of the scalar unknown is proposed and shown to provide an additional ord…
We propose an a posteriori error estimator for high-order $p$- or $hp$-finite element discretizations of selfadjoint linear elliptic eigenvalue problems that is appropriate for estimating the error in the approximation of an eigenvalue cluster and the corresponding invariant subspace. The estimator is based on the computation of approximate error functions in a space that complements the one in which the approximate eigenvectors were computed. These error functions are used to construct estimates of collective measures of error, such as the Hausdorff distance between the true and approximate c…
We present a posteriori error analysis in the supremum norm for the symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the elliptic obstacle problem. We construct discrete barrier functions based on appropriate corrections of the conforming part of the solution that is obtained via a constrained averaging operator. The corrector function accounts properly for the non-conformity of the approximation and it is estimated by direct use of the Green's function of the unconstrained elliptic problem. The use of the continuous maximum principle guarantees the validity of the analysis without…
This work focuses on the development of a posteriori error estimates for fourth-order, elliptic, partial differential equations. In particular, we propose a novel algorithm to steer an adaptive simulation in the context of Kirchhoff plates and Kirchhoff-Love shells by exploiting the local refinement capabilities of hierarchical B-splines. The method is based on the solution of an auxiliary residual-like variational problem, formulated by means of a space of localized spline functions. This space is characterized by $C^1$ continuous B-splines with compact support on each active element of the h…
We consider a linear elliptic partial differential equation (PDE) with a generic uniformly bounded parametric coefficient. The solution to this PDE problem is approximated in the framework of stochastic Galerkin finite element methods. We perform a posteriori error analysis of Galerkin approximations and derive a reliable and efficient estimate for the energy error in these approximations. Practical versions of this error estimate are discussed and tested numerically for a model problem with non-affine parametric representation of the coefficient. Furthermore, we use the error reduction indica…

The nonconforming virtual element method (NCVEM) for the approximation of the weak solution to a general linear second-order non-selfadjoint indefinite elliptic PDE in a polygonal domain is analyzed under reduced elliptic regularity. The main tool in the a priori error analysis is the connection between the nonconforming virtual element space and the Sobolev space $H^1_0(Ω)$ by a right-inverse $J$ of the interpolation operator $I_h$. The stability of the discrete solution allows for the proof of existence of a unique discrete solution, of a discrete inf-sup estimate and, consequently, for opti…
A new anisotropic mesh adaptation strategy for finite element solution of elliptic differential equations is presented. It generates anisotropic adaptive meshes as quasi-uniform ones in some metric space, with the metric tensor being computed based on hierarchical a posteriori error estimates. A global hierarchical error estimate is employed in this study to obtain reliable directional information of the solution. Instead of solving the global error problem exactly, which is costly in general, we solve it iteratively using the symmetric Gauss--Seidel (GS) method. Numerical results show that a …

Conforming and Non-Conforming Functional A Posteriori Error Estimates for Elliptic Boundary Value Problems in Exterior Domains: Theory and Numerical Tests
In this paper, we design the first residual type a posteriori error estimator for mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the H(curl)-elliptic problems. Then we prove that our residual based a posteriori error indicator is both reliable and efficient. At last, we present some numerical experiments to validate the performance of the indicator within an adaptive mesh refinement procedure.
This paper proposes a method for rigorously analyzing the sign-change structure of solutions of elliptic partial differential equations subject to one of the three types of homogeneous boundary conditions: Dirichlet, Neumann, and mixed. Given explicitly estimated error bounds between an exact solution $ u $ and a numerically computed approximate solution $ \hat{u} $, we evaluate the number of sign-changes of $ u $ (the number of nodal domains) and determine the location of zero level-sets of $ u $ (the location of the nodal line). We apply this method to the Dirichlet problem of the Allen-Cahn…
In the seminal paper of Bank and Weiser [Math. Comp., 44 (1985), pp.283-301] a new a posteriori estimator was introduced. This estimator requires the solution of a local Neumann problem on every cell of the finite element mesh. Despite the promise of Bank-Weiser type estimators, namely locality, computational efficiency, and asymptotic sharpness, they have seen little use in practical computational problems. The focus of this contribution is to describe a novel implementation of hierarchical estimators of the Bank-Weiser type in a modern high-level finite element software with automatic code g…
We present a framework that relates preconditioning with a posteriori error estimates in finite element methods. In particular, we use standard tools in subspace correction methods to obtain reliable and efficient error estimators. As a simple example, we recover the classical residual error estimators for the second order elliptic equations.
In this work, we further develop multigoal-oriented a posteriori error estimation for the nonlinear, stationary, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. It is an extension of our previous work [B. Endtmayer, U. Langer, T. Wick: Two-side a posteriori error estimates for the DWR method, $SISC$, 2019, accepted]. We now focus on $h$ mesh refinement and $p$ enrichment for the error estimator. These advancements are demonstrated with the help of a numerical example
We design an adaptive unfitted finite element method on the Cartesian mesh with hanging nodes. We derive an hp-reliable and efficient residual type a posteriori error estimate on K-meshes. A key ingredient is a novel hp-domain inverse estimate which allows us to prove the stability of the finite element method under practical interface resolving mesh conditions and also prove the lower bound of the hp a posteriori error estimate. Numerical examples are included.
The purpose of this paper is to develop a unified a posteriori method for verifying the positivity of solutions of elliptic boundary value problems by assuming neither $H^2$-regularity nor $ L^{\infty} $-error estimation, but only $ H^1_0 $-error estimation. In [J. Comput. Appl. Math, Vol. 370, (2020) 112647], we proposed two approaches to verify the positivity of solutions of several semilinear elliptic boundary value problems. However, some cases require $ L^{\infty} $-error estimation and, therefore, narrow applicability. In this paper, we extend one of the approaches and combine it with a …
A class of linear parabolic equations are considered. We give a posteriori error estimates in the maximum norm for a method that comprises extrapolation applied to the backward Euler method in time and finite element discretisations in space. We use the idea of elliptic reconstructions and certain bounds for the Green's function of the parabolic operator.

We introduce a local adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The proposed method is based on a coarse grid and iteratively improves the solution's accuracy by solving local elliptic problems in refined subdomains. For purely diffusion problems, we already proved that this scheme converges under minimal regularity assumptions [A. Abdulle and G.Rosilho de Souza, ESAIM: M2AN, 53(4):1269--1303, 2019]. In this paper, we provide an algorithm for the automatic identification of the local elliptic problems' subdomains employing a flux reconstruction strategy…
In this note we examine the a priori and a posteriori analysis of discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretisations of semilinear elliptic PDEs with polynomial nonlinearity. We show that optimal a priori error bounds in the energy norm are only possible for low order elements using classical a priori error analysis techniques. We make use of appropriate quasinorms that results in optimal energy norm error control. We show that, contrary to the a priori case, a standard a posteriori analysis yields optimal upper bounds and does not require the introduction of quasinorms. We also summarise e…
Trimming consists of cutting away parts of a geometric domain, without reconstructing a global parametrization (meshing). It is a widely used operation in computer aided design, which generates meshes that are unfitted with the described physical object. This paper develops an adaptive mesh refinement strategy on trimmed geometries in the context of hierarchical B-spline based isogeometric analysis. A residual a posteriori estimator of the energy norm of the numerical approximation error is derived, in the context of the Poisson equation. The estimator is proven to be reliable, independently o…
In this work we examine a posteriori error control for post-processed approximations to elliptic boundary value problems. We introduce a class of post-processing operator that `tweaks' a wide variety of existing post-processing techniques to enable efficient and reliable a posteriori bounds to be proven. This ultimately results in optimal error control for all manner of reconstruction operators, including those that superconverge. We showcase our results by applying them to two classes of very popular reconstruction operators, the Smoothness-Increasing Accuracy-Enhancing filter and Superconver…
In this paper we introduce and analyze the residual-based a posteriori error estimation of the partially penalized immersed finite element method for solving elliptic interface problems. The immersed finite element method can be naturally utilized on interface-unfitted meshes. Our a posteriori error estimate is proved to be both reliable and efficient with reliability constant independent of the location of the interface. Numerical results indicate that the efficiency constant is independent of the interface location and that the error estimation is robust with respect to the coefficient contr…
In this paper we introduce an algorithm based on a sparse grid adaptive refinement, for the approximation of the eigensolutions to parametric problems arising from elliptic partial differential equations. In particular, we are interested in detecting the crossing of the hypersurfaces describing the eigenvalues as a function of the parameters. The a priori matching is followed by an a posteriori verification, driven by a suitably defined error indicator. At a given refinement level, a sparse grid approach is adopted for the construction of the grid of the next level, by using the marking given …
We derive an anisotropic a posteriori error estimate for the adaptive conforming Virtual Element approximation of a paradigmatic two-dimensional elliptic problem. In particular, we introduce a quasi-interpolant operator and exploit its approximation results to prove the reliability of the error indicator. We design and implement the corresponding adaptive polygonal anisotropic algorithm. Several numerical tests assess the superiority of the proposed algorithm in comparison with standard polygonal isotropic mesh refinement schemes.
