For asymptotically flat spacetimes, using the inverse mean curvature flow, we show that any compact $2$-surface, $S_0$, whose mean curvature and its derivative for outward direction are positive in spacelike hypersurface with non-negative Ricci scalar satisfies the inequality $A_0 \leq 4 π(3Gm)^2$, where $A_0$ is the area of $S_0$ and $m$ is the total mass. The upper bound is realized when $S_0$ is the photon sphere in a hypersurface isometric to $t=$const. slice of the Schwarzschild spacetime.
The role of fermionic matter in the spectrum of the area operator is analyzed using the Baez--Krasnov framework for quantum fermions and gravity. The result is that the fermionic contribution to the area of a surface $S$ is equivalent to the contribution of purely gravitational spin network's edges tangent to $S$. Therefore, the spectrum of the area operator is the same as in the pure gravity case.
In the present paper we consider 5D spacetimes satisfying the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity equations which are $U(1)^2$ axisymmetric but otherwise highly dynamical. We derive inequalities between the area, the angular momenta, the electric charge and the magnetic fluxes for any smooth stably outer marginally trapped surface.
We examine and compare different area spectra that have been recently considered in Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG). In particular we focus our attention on a Equally Spaced (ES) spectrum operator introduced by Alekseev et. al. that has gained recent attention. We show that such operator is not well defined within the LQG framework, and comment on the issue regarding area spectra and QNM frequencies.
It is argued that the quantum of area between consecutive, high overtones quasinormal modes of a black hole horizon coincides with the area gap predicted by Loop Quantum Gravity, as long as the horizon is isolated and the Barbero-Immirzi parameter is $γ\approx \sqrt{3}/6$, in agreement with the value derived from the Bekenstein-Hawking horizon entropy.
The entropy of the Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter black hole in the recently proposed four-dimensional critical gravity is trivial in the Euclidean action formulation, while it is expressed by the area law in terms of the brick wall method given by 't Hooft. To resolve this issue, we relate the Euclidean action formulation to the brick wall method semiclassically, and show that the entropy of the black hole can be expressed by the area law at the critical point.
We investigate the gauge-independent Hamiltonian formulation and the anomalous Ward identities of a matter-induced 1+1-dimensional gravity theory invariant under Weyl transformations and area-preserving diffeomorphisms, and compare the results to the ones for the conventional diffeomorphism-invariant theory. We find that, in spite of several technical differences encountered in the analysis, the two theories are essentially equivalent.
We discuss two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to conformal matter and fixed area in a semiclassical large and negative matter central charge limit. In this setup the gravity theory -- otherwise highly fluctuating -- admits a round two-sphere saddle. We discuss the two-sphere partition function up to two-loop order from the path integral perspective. This amounts to studying Feynman diagrams incorporating the fixed area constraint on the round two-sphere. In particular we find that all ultraviolet divergences cancel to this order. We compare our results with the two-sphere partition functi…
Utilizing the previously established general formalism for quantum symmetry reduction in the framework of loop quantum gravity the spectrum of the area operator acting on spherically symmetric states in 4 dimensional pure gravity is investigated. The analysis requires a careful treatment of partial gauge fixing in the classical symmetry reduction and of the reinforcement of SU(2)-gauge invariance for the quantization of the area operator. The eigenvalues of that operator applied to spherically symmetric spin network states have the form A_n propor. sqrt{n(n+2)}, n=0,1,2..., giving A_n propor. …
We study the existence and stability of isoperimetric surfaces in a family of rotating black holes in New Massive Gravity. We show that the stability of such surfaces is determined by the sign of the hair parameter. We use the isoperimetric surfaces to find a geometric inequality between the area and the angular momentum of the black hole, conjecturing geometric inequalities for more general black holes.
We study the spectrum of the length and area operators in Lorentzian loop quantum gravity, in 2+1 spacetime dimensions. We find that the spectrum of spacelike intervals is continuous, whereas the spectrum of timelike intervals is discrete. This result contradicts the expectation that spacelike intervals are always discrete. On the other hand, it is consistent with the results of the spin foam quantization of the same theory.
Considering the possibility of `renormalization' of the gravitational constant on the horizon, leading to a dependence on the level of the associated Chern-Simons theory, a rescaled area spectrum is proposed for the non-rotating black hole horizon in loop quantum gravity. The statistical mechanical calculation leading to the entropy provides a unique choice of the rescaling function for which the Bekenstein-Hawking area law is yielded without the need to choose the Barbero-Immirzi parameter $(γ)$. $γ$ is determined by studying the limit in which the `renormalized' gravitational constant on the…
I investigate the relation between an operative definition of the area of a surface specified by matter fields and the area operators recently introduced in the canonical/loop approach to Quantum Gravity and in Rovelli's variant of the Husain-Kuchar Quantum-Gravity toy model. The results suggest that the discreteness of the spectra of the area operators might not be observable.
Area preserving diffeomorphisms of a 2-d compact Riemannian manifold with or without boundary are studied. We find two classes of decompositions of a Riemannian metric, namely, h- and g-decomposition, that help to formulate a gravitational theory which is area preserving diffeomorphism (SDiff$M$-) invariant but not necessarily diffeomorphism invariant. The general covariance of equations of motion of such a theory can be achieved by incorporating proper Weyl rescaling. The h-decomposition makes the conformal factor of a metric SDiff$M$-invariant and the rest of the metric invariant under confo…
We study the action of Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi (HRT) area operators on the covariant phase space of classical solutions. It has been previously proposed that this action generates a transformation which, roughly speaking, boosts the entanglement wedge on one side of the HRT surface relative to the entanglement wedge on the other side. We give a sharp argument for a precise result of this form in a general theory of Einstein-Hilbert gravity minimally coupled to matter, taking appropriate care with asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) boundary conditions. The result agrees with direct computa…
Area metric manifolds emerge as effective classical backgrounds in quantum string theory and quantum gauge theory, and present a true generalization of metric geometry. Here, we consider area metric manifolds in their own right, and develop in detail the foundations of area metric differential geometry. Based on the construction of an area metric curvature scalar, which reduces in the metric-induced case to the Ricci scalar, we re-interpret the Einstein-Hilbert action as dynamics for an area metric spacetime. In contrast to modifications of general relativity based on metric geometry, no conti…
A state of a black hole in loop quantum gravity is given by a distribution of spins on punctures on the horizon. The distribution is of the Boltzmann type, with the area playing the role of the energy. In investigations where the total area was kept approximately constant, there was a kind of thermal equilibrium between the spins which have the same analogue temperature and the entropy was proportional to the area. If the area is precisely fixed, however, multiple constraints appear, different spins have different analogue temperatures and the entropy is not strictly linear in the area, but is…
We investigate puncture statistics based on the covariant area spectrum in loop quantum gravity. First, we consider Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics with a Gibbs factor for punctures. We establish formulae which relate physical quantities such as horizon area to the parameter characterizing holographic degrees of freedom. We also perform numerical calculations and obtain consistency with these formulae. These results tell us that the holographic bound is satisfied in the large area limit and correction term of the entropy-area law can be proportional to the logarithm of the horizon area. Second, w…
Simple arguments related to the entropy of black holes strongly constrain the spectrum of the area operator for a Schwarzschild black hole in loop quantum gravity. In particular, this spectrum is fixed completely by the assumption that the black hole entropy is maximum. Within the approach discussed, one arrives in loop quantum gravity at a quantization rule with integer quantum numbers $n$ for the entropy and area of a black hole.
We investigate the area spectrum of Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity via modified adiabatic invariant $I=\oint p_i d q_i$ and Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule. We find that the area spectrum is equally spaced with a spacing of $ ΔA=4 πl_p ^2$. We have also studied the thermodynamic behavior of KS black hole by deriving different thermodynamic quantities.
I provide a general proof of the conjecture that one can attribute an entropy to the area of {\it any} horizon. This is done by constructing a canonical ensemble of a subclass of spacetimes with a fixed value for the temperature $T=β^{-1}$ and evaluating the {\it exact} partition function $Z(β)$. For spherically symmetric spacetimes with a horizon at $r=a$, the partition function has the generic form $Z\propto \exp[S-βE]$, where $S= (1/4) 4πa^2$ and $|E|=(a/2)$. Both $S$ and $E$ are determined entirely by the properties of the metric near the horizon. This analysis reproduces the conventional …
We compute the complete spectrum of the area operator in the loop representation of quantum gravity, using recoupling theory. This result extends previous derivations, which did not include the ``degenerate'' sector, and agrees with the recently computed spectrum of the connection-representation area operator.
Earlier calculations of black hole entropy in loop quantum gravity have given a term proportional to the area with a correction involving the logarithm of the area when the area eigenvalue is close to the classical area. However the calculations yield an entropy proportional to the area eigenvalue with no such correction when the area eigenvalue is large compared to the classical area.
We explore a possible connection between two aspects of Loop Quantum Gravity which have been extensively studied in the recent literature: the black-hole area-entropy law and the energy-momentum dispersion relation. We observe that the original Bekenstein argument for the area-entropy law implicitly requires information on the energy-momentum dispersion relation. Recent results show that in first approximation black-hole entropy in Loop Quantum Gravity depends linearly on the area, with small correction terms which have logarithmic or inverse-power dependence on the area. Preliminary studies o…
Several proposals for Quantum Gravity involve length and area operators with discrete eigenvalues. I show that the analyses of some simple procedures for the measurement of areas and lengths suggest that this discreteness characterizing the formalism might not be observable. I also discuss a possible relation with the so-called $κ$ deformations of Poincare' symmetries.

In this paper, I show that if a spin network is cut by a surface separating space-time into two regions, the sum of spins of edges crossing the surface must be an integer. This gives a restriction on the area spectrum of such surfaces, including black hole horizons, in loop quantum gravity.
Non-Abelian Gauss law is interpreted in terms of area bits described in a local frame which fit together into closed surfaces and the Non-Abelian Stokes law in terms of length bits described in a local frame which fit together into closed loops. A new equation relating the area variables and the phase space variables (or equivalently, angular momentum variables of the lattice Yang-Mills theory and phase space variables of the continuum theory) is obtained. Canonical quantization applied to these variables implies area quantization. A complete orthonormal basis of states satisfying the Gauss co…
We consider the area and entropy spectra of black holes in topologically massive gravity with gravitational Chern-Simons term. The examples we consider are the BTZ black hole and the warped AdS black hole. For the non-rotating BTZ black hole, the area and entropy spectra are equally spaced and independent of the coupling constant $\v$ of the Chern-Simons term. For the rotating BTZ black hole case, the spectra of the inner and outer horizon areas are not equally spaced in general and dependent of the coupling constant $\v$. However the entropy spectrum is equally spaced and independent of the c…
The choice of the area operator in loop quantum gravity is by no means unique. In addition to the area operator commonly used in loop quantum gravity there is also an area operator introduced by Krasnov in 1998, which gives uniformly spaced area spectra for the horizons of spacetime. Using Krasnov's area operator we consider the thermodynamics of spherically symmetric spacetimes equipped with horizons in loop quantum gravity. Among other things, our approach implies, in a pretty simple manner, that every horizon of spacetime emits thermal radiation and possesses emtropy which, in the natural u…
In the context of the holographic duality, the entanglement entropy of ordinary QFT in a subregion in the boundary is given by a quarter of the area of an minimal surface embedded in the bulk spacetime. This rule has been also extended to a suitable one-parameter generalization of the von-Neuman entropy $\hat{S}_n$ that is related to the Rényi entropies $S_n$, as given by the area of a \emph{cosmic brane} minimally coupled with gravity, with a tension related to $n$ that vanishes as $n\to1$, and moreover, this parameter can be analytically extended to arbitrary real values. However, the brane …
For a large class of density matrices in semiclassical gravity, it is shown that the reduced density matrix which corresponds to tracing over the degrees of freedom in a spatial subregion is dominated by states for which the area of the boundary of the subregion is minimised. In the semiclassical limit, the entropy of the reduced density matrix is found to have a leading order contribution equal to one quarter of the minimal area in natural units. This is consistent with the Ryu-Takayanagi conjecture. An extension to higher derivative theories of gravity is established, for which the area is r…
Self-dual gravity may be reformulated as the two dimensional principal chiral model with the group of area preserving diffeomorphisms as its gauge group. Using this formulation, it is shown that self-dual gravity contains an infinite dimensional hidden symmetry whose generators form the Affine (Kac-Moody) algebra associated with the Lie algebra of area preserving diffeomorphisms. This result provides an observable algebra and a solution generating technique for self-dual gravity.
We compare two area spectra proposed in loop quantum gravity in different approaches to compute the entropy of the Schwarzschild black hole. We describe the black hole in general microcanonical and canonical area ensembles for these spectra. We show that in the canonical ensemble, the results for all statistical quantities for any spectrum can be reproduced by a heuristic picture of Bekenstein up to second order. For one of these spectra - the equally-spaced spectrum - in light of a proposed connection of the black hole area spectrum to the quasinormal mode spectrum and following hep-th/030413…
Without imposing the trapping boundary conditions and only from within the very definition of area it is shown that the loop quantization of area manifests an unexpected degeneracy in area eigenvalues. This could lead to a deeper understanding of the microscopic description of a quantum black hole. If a certain number of semi-classically expected properties of black holes are imposed on a quantum surface its entropy coincides with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We explore the constraints following from requiring the Area Law in the entanglement entropy in the context of loop quantum gravity. We find a unique solution to the single link wave-function in the large j limit, believed to be appropriate in the semi-classical limit. We then generalize our considerations to multi-link coherent states, and find that the area law is preserved very generically using our single link wave-function as a building block. Finally, we develop the framework that generates families of multi-link states that preserve the area law while avoiding macroscopic entanglement, …
We show that, apart from the usual area operator of non-perturbative quantum gravity, there exists another, closely related, operator that measures areas of surfaces. Both corresponding classical expressions yield the area. Quantum mechanically, however, the spectra of the two operators are different, coinciding only in the limit when the spins labelling the state are large. We argue that both operators are legitimate quantum operators, and which one to use depends on the context of a physical problem of interest. Thus, for example, we argue that it is the operator proposed here that is releva…
An insightful argument for a linear relation between the entropy and the area of a black hole was given by Bekenstein using only the energy-momentum dispersion relation, the uncertainty principle, and some properties of classical black holes. Recent analyses within String Theory and Loop Quantum Gravity describe black-hole entropy in terms of a dominant contribution, which indeed depends linearly on the area, and a leading log-area correction. We argue that, by reversing the Bekenstein argument, the log-area correction can provide insight on the energy-momentum dispersion relation and the unce…
We use the manifestly Lorentz covariant canonical formalism to evaluate eigenvalues of the area operator acting on Wilson lines. To this end we modify the standard definition of the loop states to make it applicable to the present case of non-commutative connections. The area operator is diagonalized by using the usual shift ambiguity in definition of the connection. The eigenvalues are then expressed through quadratic Casimir operators. No dependence on the Immirzi parameter appears.
Results for the gravitational Wilson loop, in particular the area law for large loops in the strong coupling region, and the argument for an effective positive cosmological constant discussed in a previous paper, are extended to other proposed theories of discrete quantum gravity in the strong coupling limit. We argue that the area law is a generic feature of almost all non-perturbative lattice formulations, for sufficiently strong gravitational coupling. The effects on gravitational Wilson loops of the inclusion of various types of light matter coupled to lattice quantum gravity are discussed…
A recent theory about the origin of the gravity suggests that the gravity is originally an entropic force. In this work, we discuss the effects of generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) which is proposed by some approaches to quantum gravity such as string theory, black hole physics and doubly special relativity theories (DSR), on the area law of the entropy. This leads to a $\sqrt{Area}$-type correction to the area law of entropy which imply that the number of bits $N$ is modified. Therefore, we obtain a modified Newton's law of gravitation. Surprisingly, this modification agrees with differ…
Using an exact Vaidya-type null-dust solution, we study the area and entropy laws for dynamical black holes defined by a future outer trapping horizon in (2+1)-dimensional Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT) massive gravity. We consider the theory admitting a degenerate (anti-)de Sitter vacuum and pure BHT gravity. It is shown that, while the area of a black hole decreases by the injection of a null dust with positive energy density in several cases, the Wald-Kodama dynamical entropy always increases.
We study the distribution of the eigenvalues of the area operator in loop quantum gravity concentrating on the part of the spectrum relevant for isolated horizons. We first show that the approximations relying on integer partitions are not sufficient to obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalue distribution for large areas. We then develop a method, based on Laplace transforms, that provides a very accurate solution to this problem. The representation that we get is valid for any area and can be used to obtain its asymptotics in the large area limit.
The lowest 37000 eigenvalues of the area operator in loop quantum gravity is calculated and studied numerically. We obtain an asymptotical formula for the eigenvalues as a function of their sequential number. The multiplicity of the lowest few hundred eigenvalues is also determined and the smoothed spectral density is calculated. The spectral density is presented for various number of vertices, edges and SU(2) representations. A scaling form of spectral density is found, being a power law for one vertex, while following an exponential for several vertices. The latter case is explained on the b…
We propose an approach which, by combining insights from Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), Topos theory, Non-commutative Geometry à la Connes, and spacetime relationalism, provides fertile ground for the search of an adequate spacetime picture in Quantum Gravity. With this approach, we obtain a novel way of deducing the quantization of the possible values for the area of a surface. One gets the same area values than those from the area operator in standard LQG, but our approach makes a further prediction: some smaller values and sub-divisions are also allowed. In addition, the area arises as a nonco…
In this work we investigate the thermodynamic properties of conformal gravity in four dimensions. We compute the \emph{area(or entropy) functional} relation for this black hole. We consider both de-Sitter (dS) and anti de-Sitter (AdS) cases. We derive the \emph{Cosmic-Censorship-Inequality} which is an important relation in general relativity that relates the total mass of a spacetime to the area of all the black hole horizons. Local thermodynamic stability is studied by computing the specific heat. The second order phase transition occurs at a certain condition. Various type of second order p…
We outline how the Wald entropy formula naturally arises in loop quantum gravity based on recently introduced dimension-independent connection variables. The key observation is that in a loop quantization of a generalized gravity theory, the analog of the area operator turns out to measure, morally speaking, the Wald entropy rather than the area. We discuss the explicit example of (higher-dimensional) Lanczos-Lovelock gravity and comment on recent work on finding the correct numerical prefactor of the entropy by comparing it to a semiclassical effective action.
Two sets of spatially diffeomorphism invariant operators are constructed in the loop representation formulation of quantum gravity. This is done by coupling general relativity to an anti- symmetric tensor gauge field and using that field to pick out sets of surfaces, with boundaries, in the spatial three manifold. The two sets of observables then measure the areas of these surfaces and the Wilson loops for the self-dual connection around their boundaries. The operators that represent these observables are finite and background independent when constructed through a proper regularization proced…
Deformations of minimal surfaces lying in constant time slices in static space-times are studied. An exact and universal formula for a change of the area of a minimal surface under shifts of nearby point-like particles is found. It allows one to introduce a local temperature on the surface and represent variations of its area in a thermodynamical form by assuming that the entropy in the Planck units equals the quarter of the area. These results provide a strong support to a recent hypothesis that gravity has an entropic origin, the minimal surfaces being a sort of holographic screens. The grav…
The principle of equivalence provides a description of gravity in terms of the metric tensor and determines how gravity affects the light cone structure of the space-time. This, in turn, leads to the existence of observers (in any space-time) who do not have access to regions of space-time bounded by horizons. To take into account this generic possibility, it is necessary to demand that \emph{physical theories in a given coordinate system must be formulated entirely in terms of variables that an observer using that coordinate system can access}. This principle is powerful enough to obtain the …
We examine the thermodynamic features of \emph{inner} and outer horizons of modified gravity~(MOG) and its consequences on the holographic duality. We derive the thermodynamic product relations for this gravity. We consider both spherically symmetric solutions and axisymmetric solutions of MOG. We find that the area product formula for both cases is \emph{not} mass-independent because they depends on the ADM mass parameter while in \emph{Einstein gravity} this formula is mass-independent~(universal). We also explicitly verify the \emph{first law} which is fulfilled at the inner horizon~(IH) as…
Quantum states of geometry in loop quantum gravity are defined as spin networks, which are graph dressed with SU(2) representations. A spin network edge carries a half-integer spin, representing basic quanta of area, and the standard framework imposes an area matching constraint along the edge: it carries the same spin at its source and target vertices. In the context of coarse-graining, or equivalently of the definition of spin networks as projective limits of graphs, it appears natural to introduce excitations of curvature along the edges. An edge is then treated similarly to a propagator li…
