Two integrable $U(1)$-invariant peakon equations are derived from the NLS hierarchy through the tri-Hamiltonian splitting method. A Lax pair, a recursion operator, a bi-Hamiltonian formulation, and a hierarchy of symmetries and conservation laws are obtained for both peakon equations. These equations are also shown to arise as potential flows in the NLS hierarchy by applying the NLS recursion operator to flows generated by space translations and $U(1)$-phase rotations on a potential variable. Solutions for both equations are derived using a peakon ansatz combined with an oscillatory temporal phase. This yields the first known example of a peakon breather. Spatially periodic counterparts of these solutions are also obtained.
Using the tri-hamiltonian splitting method, the authors of [Anco and Mobasheramini, Physica D, 355:1--23, 2017] derived two $U(1)$-invariant nonlinear PDEs that arise from the hierarchy of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and admit peakons ($non-smooth\ solitons$). In the present paper, these two peakon PDEs are generalized to a family of $U(1)$-invariant peakon PDEs parametrized by the real projective line $ \mathbf{RP} ^1$. All equations in this family are shown to posses $conservative\ peakon \ solutions$ (whose Sobolev $H^1(\mathbf{R})$ norm is time invariant). The Hamiltonian structure …
We propose realizations of the Poisson structures for the Lax representations of three integrable $n$-body peakon equations, Camassa--Holm, Degasperis--Procesi and Novikov. The Poisson structures derived from the integrability structures of the continuous equations yield quadratic forms for the $r$-matrix representation, with the Toda molecule classical $r$-matrix playing a prominent role. We look for a linear form for the $r$-matrix representation. Aside from the Camassa--Holm case, where the structure is already known, the two other cases do not allow such a presentation, with the noticeable…
In this letter, we propose a (2+1)-dimensional generalized Camassa-Holm (2dgCH) hierarchy with both quadratic and cubic nonlinearity. The Lax representation and peakon solutions for the 2dgCH system are derived.
We consider a one-parameter family of non-evolutionary partial differential equations which includes the integrable Camassa-Holm equation and a new equation first isolated by Degasperis and Procesi. A Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulation is presented for the whole family of equations, and we discuss how this fits into a bi-Hamiltonian framework in the integrable cases. The Hamiltonian dynamics of peakons and some other special finite-dimensional reductions are also described.
In this paper, we study an integrable system with both quadratic and cubic nonlinearity: $m_t=bu_x+1/2k_1[m(u^2-u^2_x)]_x+1/2k_2(2m u_x+m_xu)$, $m=u-u_{xx}$, where $b$, $k_1$ and $k_2$ are arbitrary constants. This model is kind of a cubic generalization of the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation: $m_t+m_xu+2mu_x=0$. The equation is shown integrable with its Lax pair, bi-Hamiltonian structure, and infinitely many conservation laws. In the case of $b=0$, the peaked soliton (peakon) and multi-peakon solutions are studied. In particular, the two-peakon dynamical system is explicitly presented and their co…
We consider a two-component Hamiltonian system of partial differential equations with quadratic nonlinearities introduced by Popowicz, which has the form of a coupling between the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations. Despite having reductions to these two integrable partial differential equations, the Popowicz system itself is not integrable. Nevertheless, as one of the authors showed with Irle, it admits distributional solutions of peaked soliton (peakon) type, with the dynamics of $N$ peakons being determined by a Hamiltonian system on a phase space of dimension $3N$. As well as th…
In this letter, we study the Alice-Bob peakon system generated from an integrable peakon system through using the strategy of the so-called Alice-Bob non-local KdV approach [13]. Non-local integrable peakon equations are obtained and shown to have peakon solutions.
We consider a new partial differential equation, of a similar form to the Camassa-Holm shallow water wave equation, which was recently obtained by Degasperis and Procesi using the method of asymptotic integrability. We prove the exact integrability of the new equation by constructing its Lax pair, and we explain its connection with a negative flow in the Kaup-Kupershmidt hierarchy via a reciprocal transformation. The infinite sequence of conserved quantities is derived together with a proposed bi-Hamiltonian structure. The equation admits exact solutions in the form of a superposition of multi…
We present a new integrable partial differential equation found by Vladimir Novikov. Like the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations, this new equation admits peaked soliton (peakon) solutions, but it has nonlinear terms that are cubic, rather than quadratic. We give a matrix Lax pair for V. Novikov's equation, and show how it is related by a reciprocal transformation to a negative flow in the Sawada-Kotera hierarchy. Infinitely many conserved quantities are found, as well as a bi-Hamiltonian structure. The latter is used to obtain the Hamiltonian form of the finite-dimensional system f…
We introduce a generalized isospectral problem for global conservative multi-peakon solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. Utilizing the solution of the indefinite moment problem given by M. G. Krein and H. Langer, we show that the conservative Camassa-Holm equation is integrable by the inverse spectral transform in the multi-peakon case.
In this paper, we propose a three-component Camassa-Holm (3CH) system with cubic nonlinearity and peakons. The 3CH model is proven integrable in the sense of Lax pair, Hamiltonian structure, and conservation laws. We show that this system admits peaked soliton (peakon) and multi-peakon solutions. Additionally, reductions of the 3CH system are investigated so that a new integrable perturbed CH equation with cubic nonlinearity is generated to possess peakon solutions.
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for an integrable multi-component (2N-component) peakon system which is involved in an arbitrary polynomial function. Based on a generalized Ovsyannikov type theorem, we first prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for the system in the Gevrey-Sobolev spaces with the lower bound of the lifespan. Then we show the continuity of the data-to-solution map for the system. Furthermore, by introducing a family of continuous diffeomorphisms of a line and utilizing the fine structure of the system, we demonstrate the system exhibits unique continuation…
Peakons are singular, soliton-like solutions to nonlinear wave equations whose dynamics can be studied using ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The Degasperis-Procesi equation (DP) is an important example of an integrable PDE exhibiting wave breaking in the peakon sector thus affording an interpretation of wave breaking as a mechanical collision of particles. In this paper we set up a general formalism in which to study collisions of DP peakons and apply it, as an illustration, to a detailed study of three colliding peakons. It is shown that peakons can collide only in pairs, no triple co…
A new two-component system with cubic nonlinearity and linear dispersion: \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{\begin{array}{l} m_t=bu_{x}+\frac{1}{2}[m(uv-u_xv_x)]_x-\frac{1}{2}m(uv_x-u_xv), \\ n_t=bv_{x}+\frac{1}{2}[ n(uv-u_xv_x)]_x+\frac{1}{2} n(uv_x-u_xv), \\m=u-u_{xx},~~ n=v-v_{xx}, \end{array}\right. \end{eqnarray*} where $b$ is an arbitrary real constant, is proposed in this paper. This system is shown integrable with its Lax pair, bi-Hamiltonian structure, and infinitely many conservation laws. Geometrically, this system describes a nontrivial one-parameter family of pseudo-spherical surfaces. In …
We consider a Lax pair found by Xia, Qiao and Zhou for a family of two-component analogues of the Camassa-Holm equation, including an arbitrary function $H$, and show that this apparent freedom can be removed via a combination of a reciprocal transformation and a gauge transformation, which reduces the system to triangular form. The resulting triangular system may or may not be integrable, depending on the choice of $H$. In addition, we apply the formal series approach of Dubrovin and Zhang to show that scalar equations of Camassa-Holm type with homogeneous nonlinear terms of degree greater th…
We use the r-matrix formulation to show the integrability of geodesic flow on an $N$-dimensional space with coordinates $q_k$, with $k=1,...,N$, equipped with the co-metric $g^{ij}=e^{-|q_i-q_j|}\big(2-e^{-|q_i-q_j|}\big)$. This flow is generated by a symmetry of the integrable partial differential equation (pde) $m_t+um_x+3mu_x=0, m=u-α^2u_{xx}$ ($\al $ is a constant). This equation -- called the Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation -- was recently proven to be completely integrable and possess peakon solutions by Degasperis, Holm and Hone (DHH[2002]). The isospectral eigenvalue problem associate…
We consider the scaling similarity solutions of two integrable cubically nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) that admit peaked soliton (peakon) solutions, namely the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation and Novikov's equation. By making use of suitable reciprocal transformations, which map the mCH equation and Novikov's equation to a negative mKdV flow and a negative Sawada-Kotera flow, respectively, we show that each of these scaling similarity reductions is related via a hodograph transformation to an equation of Painlevé type: for the mCH equation, its reduction is of second ord…
Motivated by the Novikov equation and its peakon problem, we propose a new mixed type Hermite--Padé approximation whose unique solution is a sequence of polynomials constructed with the help of Pfaffians. These polynomials belong to the family of recently proposed partial-skew-orthogonal polynomials. The relevance of partial-skew-orthogonal polynomials is especially visible in the approximation problem germane to the Novikov peakon problem so that we obtain explicit inverse formulae in terms of Pfaffians by reformulating the inverse spectral problem for the Novikov multipeakons. Furthermore, w…
We prove that the two-component peakon solutions are orbitally stable in the energy space. The system concerned here is a two-component Novikov system, which is an integrable multicomponent extension of the integrable Novikov equation. We improve the method for the scalar peakons to the two-component case with genuine nonlinear interactions by establishing optimal inequalities for the conserved quantities involving the coupled structures. Moreover, we also establish the orbital stability for the train-profiles of these two-component peakons by using the refined analysis based on monotonicity o…
In this paper we discuss integrable higher order equations {\em of Camassa-Holm (CH) type}. Our higher order CH-type equations are "geometrically integrable", that is, they describe one-parametric families of pseudo-spherical surfaces, in a sense explained in Section 1, and they are integrable in the sense of zero curvature formulation ($\simeq$ Lax pair) with infinitely many local conservation laws. The major focus of the present paper is on a specific fifth order CH-type equation admitting {\em pseudo-peakons} solutions, that is, weak bounded solutions with differentiable first derivative an…
The modified Camassa-Holm equation (also called FORQ) is one of numerous $cousins$ of the Camassa-Holm equation possessing non-smoth solitons ($peakons$) as special solutions. The peakon sector of solutions is not uniquely defined: in one peakon sector (dissapative) the Sobolev $H^1$ norm is not preserved, in the other sector (conservative), introduced in [2], the time evolution of peakons leaves the $H^1$ norm invariant. In this Letter, it is shown that the conservative peakon equations of the modified Camassa-Holm can be given an appropriate Poisson structure relative to which the equations …
We consider a coupled system of Hamiltonian partial differential equations introduced by Popowicz, which has the appearance of a two-field coupling between the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations. The latter equations are both known to be integrable, and admit peaked soliton (peakon) solutions with discontinuous derivatives at the peaks. A combination of a reciprocal transformation with Painlevé analysis provides strong evidence that the Popowicz system is non-integrable. Nevertheless, we are able to construct exact travelling wave solutions in terms of an elliptic integral, together…
A generalized two-component model with peakon solutions is proposed in this paper. It allows an arbitrary function to be involved in as well as including some existing integrable peakon equations as special reductions. The generalized two-component system is shown to possess Lax pair and infinitely many conservation laws. Bi-Hamiltonian structures and peakon interactions are discussed in detail for typical representative equations of the generalized system. In particular, a new type of $N$-peakon solution, which is not in the traveling wave type, is obtained from the generalized system.
In this Letter we propose that for Lax integrable nonlinear partial differential equations the natural concept of weak solutions is implied by the compatibility condition for the respective distributional Lax pairs. We illustrate our proposal by comparing two concepts of weak solutions of the modified Camassa-Holm equation pointing out that in the peakon sector (a family of non-smooth solitons) only one of them, namely the one obtained from the distributional compatibility condition, supports the time invariance of the Sobolev $H^1$ norm.
The $b$-family is a one-parameter family of Hamiltonian partial differential equations of non-evolutionary type, which arises in shallow water wave theory. It admits a variety of solutions, including the celebrated peakons, which are weak solutions in the form of peaked solitons with a discontinuous first derivative at the peaks, as well as other interesting solutions that have been obtained in exact form and/or numerically. In each of the special cases $b=2,3$ (the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations, respectively) the equation is completely integrable, in the sense that it admits a…
We consider a family of integro-differential equations depending upon a parameter $b$ as well as a symmetric integral kernel $g(x)$. When $b=2$ and $g$ is the peakon kernel (i.e. $g(x)=\exp(-|x|)$ up to rescaling) the dispersionless Camassa-Holm equation results, while the Degasperis-Procesi equation is obtained from the peakon kernel with $b=3$. Although these two cases are integrable, generically the corresponding integro-PDE is non-integrable. However, for $b=2$ the family restricts to the pulson family of Fringer & Holm, which is Hamiltonian and numerically displays elastic scattering of pu…
A discretization of the peakons lattice is introduced, belonging to the same hierarchy as the continuous--time system. The construction examplifies the general scheme for integrable discretization of systems on Lie algebras with $r$--matrix Poisson brackets. An initial value problem for the difference equations is solved in terms of a factorization problem in a group. Interpolating Hamiltonian flow is found. A variational (Lagrangian) formulation is also given.
We derive a stochastic AKNS hierarchy using geometrical methods. The integrability is shown via a stochastic zero curvature relation associated with a stochastic isospectral problem. We expose some of the stochastic integrable partial differential equations which extend the stochastic KdV equation discovered by M. Wadati in 1983 for all the AKNS flows. We also show how to find stochastic solitons from the stochastic evolution of the scattering data of the stochastic IST. We finally expose some properties of these equations and also briefly study a stochastic Camassa-Holm equation which reduces…
A class of inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS), claiming to be novel integrable systems with rich properties continues appearing in PhysRev and PRL. All such equations are shown to be not new but equivalent to the standard NLS, which trivially explains their integrability features.
The integrability of a family of hamiltonian systems, describing in a particular case the motionof N ``peakons" (special solutions of the so-called Camassa-Holm equation) is established in the framework of the $r$-matrix approach, starting from its Lax representation. In the general case, the $r$-matrix is a dynamical one and has an interesting though complicated structure. However, for a particular choice of the relevant parameters in the hamiltonian (the one corresponding to the pure ``peakons" case), the $r$-matrix becomes essentially constant, and reduces to the one pertaining to the finit…
The Lax pair formulation of the two-component Camassa-Holm equation (CH2) is generalized to produce an integrable multi-component family, CH(n,k), of equations with $n$ components and $1\le |k|\le n$ velocities. All of the members of the CH(n,k) family show fluid-dynamics properties with coherent solitons following particle characteristics. We determine their Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian structures and give numerical examples of their soliton solution behaviour. We concentrate on the CH(2,k) family with one or two velocities, including the CH(2,-1) equation in the Dym position of the CH2 hierarchy.…
Addition of higher nonlinear terms to the well known integrable nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations, keeping the same linear dispersion (LD) usually makes the system nonintegrable. We present a systematic method through a novel Eckhaus-Kundu hierarchy, which can generate higher nonlinearities in the NLS and derivative NLS equations preserving their integrability. Moreover, similar nonlinear integrable extensions can be made again in a hierarchical way for each of the equations in the known integrable NLS and derivative NLS hierarchies with higher order LD, without changing their LD.
The Novikov equation is an integrable analogue of the Camassa-Holm equation with a cubic (rather than quadratic) nonlinear term. Both these equations support a special family of weak solutions called multipeakon solutions. In this paper, an approach involving Pfaffians is applied to study multipeakons of the Novikov equation. First, we show that the Novikov peakon ODEs describe an isospectral flow on the manifold cut out by certain Pfaffian identities. Then, a link between the Novikov peakons and the finite Toda lattice of BKP type (B-Toda lattice) is established based on the use of Pfaffians.…
We conjecture an integrability and linearizability test for dispersive Z^2-lattice equations by using a discrete multiscale analysis. The lowest order secularity conditions from the multiscale expansion give a partial differential equation of the form of the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. If the starting lattice equation is integrable then the resulting NLS equation turns out to be integrable, while if the starting equation is linearizable we get a linear Schrodinger equation. On the other hand, if we start with a non-integrable lattice equation we may obtain a non-integrable NLS equati…
Asymptotic soliton-like and asymptotic peakon-like solutions of the modified Camassa-Holm equation with variable coefficients and singular perturbation
We propose integrable discretizations of derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equations such as the Kaup-Newell equation, the Chen-Lee-Liu equation and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation by constructing Lax pairs. The discrete DNLS systems admit the reduction of complex conjugation between two dependent variables and possess bi-Hamiltonian structure. Through transformations of variables and reductions, we obtain novel integrable discretizations of the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS), modified KdV (mKdV), mixed NLS, matrix NLS, matrix KdV, matrix mKdV, coupled NLS, coupled Hirota, coupled Sasa-Sats…
We extend the reduction group method to the Lax-Darboux schemes associated with nonlinear Schrödinger type equations. We consider all possible finite reduction groups and construct corresponding Lax operators, Darboux transformations, hierarchies of integrable differential-difference equations, integrable partial difference systems and associated scalar partial difference equations.
Integrable discretisations for a class of coupled (super) nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) type of equations are presented. The class corresponds to a Lax operator with entries in a Grassmann algebra. Elementary Darboux transformations are constructed. As a result, Grassmann generalisations of the Toda lattice and the NLS dressing chain are obtained. The compatibility (Bianchi commutativity) of these Darboux transformations leads to integrable Grassmann generalisations of the difference Toda and NLS equations. The resulting systems will have discrete Lax representations provided by the set of two c…
In the present work we revisit the $b$-family model of peakon equations, containing as special cases the $b=2$ (Camassa-Holm) and $b=3$ (Degasperis-Procesi) integrable examples. We establish information about the point spectrum of the peakon solutions and notably find that for suitably smooth perturbations there exists point spectrum in the right half plane rendering the peakons unstable for $b<1$. We explore numerically these ideas in the realm of fixed-point iterations, spectral stability analysis and time-stepping of the model for the different parameter regimes. In particular, we identify …
An integrable generalization of the NLS equation is presented, in which the dynamical complex variable $u(t,x)$ is replaced by a pair of dynamical complex variables $(u_1(t,x),u_2(t,x))$, and $i$ is replaced by a Pauli matrix $J$. Integrability is retained by the addition of a nonlocal term in the resulting 2-component system. A further integrable generalization is obtained which involves a dynamical scalar variable and an additional nonlocal term. For each system, a Lax pair and a bi-Hamiltonian formulation are derived from a zero-curvature framework that is based on symmetric Lie algebras an…
We construct multi-soliton solutions of the n-component vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the half-line subject to two classes of integrable boundary conditions (BCs): the homogeneous Robin BCs and the mixed Neumann/Dirichlet BCs. The construction is based on the approach of dressing the integrable BCs: soliton solutions are generated in preserving the integrable BCs at each step of the Darboux-dressing process. Under the Robin BCs, examples, including boundary-bound solitons, are explicitly derived; under the mixed Neumann/Dirichlet BCs, the boundary can act as a polarizer that tunes d…
We consider multipeakon solutions, and to some extent also multishockpeakon solutions, of a coupled two-component integrable PDE found by Geng and Xue as a generalization of Novikov's cubically nonlinear Camassa-Holm type equation. In order to make sense of such solutions, we find it necessary to assume that there are no overlaps, meaning that a peakon or shockpeakon in one component is not allowed to occupy the same position as a peakon or shockpeakon in the other component. Therefore one can distinguish many inequivalent configurations, depending on the order in which the peakons or shockpea…

In this note we discuss the global dynamics of an integrable nonlocal NLS on $\mathbb{R}$, which has been the object of recent investigation by integrable systems methods. We prove two results which are in striking contrast with the case of the local cubic focusing NLS on $\mathbb{R}$. First, finite time blow-up solutions exist with arbitrarily small initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{R})$, for any $s\geqslant0$. On the other hand, the solitons of the local NLS, which are also solutions of the nonlocal equation, are unstable by blow-up for the latter.
Two integrable differential-difference equations are derived from a (2+1)-dimensional modified Heisenberg ferromagnetic equation and a resonant nonlinear Schröinger equation respectively. Multi-soliton solutions of the resulted semi-discrete systems are given through Hirota's bilinear method. Elastic and inelastic interaction behavior between two solitons are studied through the asymptotic analysis. Dynamics of two-soliton solutions are shown with graphs.
We prove spectral instability of peakons in the $b$-family of Camassa--Holm equations in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ that includes the integrable cases of $b = 2$ and $b = 3$. We start with a linearized operator defined on functions in $H^1(\mathbb{R}) \cap W^{1,\infty}(\mathbb{R})$ and extend it to a linearized operator defined on weaker functions in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. For $b \neq \frac{5}{2}$, the spectrum of the linearized operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ is proved to cover a closed vertical strip of the complex plane. For $b = \frac{5}{2}$, the strip shrinks to the imaginary axis, but an additional pai…
This paper develops two approaches to Lax-integrbale systems with spatiotemporally varying coefficients. A technique based on extended Lax Pairs is first considered to derive variable-coefficient generalizations of various Lax-integrable NLPDE hierarchies recently introduced in the literature. As illustrative examples, we consider generalizations of the NLS and DNLS equations, as well as a PT-symmetric version of the NLS equation. It is demonstrated that the techniques yield Lax- or S-integrable NLPDEs with both time- AND space-dependent coefficients which are thus more general than almost all…
The local and non-local vector Non-linear Schrodinger Equation (NLSE) with a general cubic non-linearity are considered in presence of a linear term characterized, in general, by a non-hermitian matrix which under certain condition incorporates balanced loss and gain and a linear coupling between the complex fields of the governing non-linear equations. It is shown that the systems posses a Lax pair and an infinite number of conserved quantities and hence integrable. Apart from the particular form of the local and non-local reductions, the systems are integrable when the matrix representing th…
Two types of integrable coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations are derived by using Zakharov-Shabat (ZS) dressing method. The Lax pairs for the coupled NLS equations are also investigated using the ZS dressing method. These give new types of the integrable coupled NLS equations with certain additional terms. Then, the exact solutions of the new types are obtained. We find that the solution of these new types do not always produce a soliton solution even they are the kind of the integrable NLS equations.
In this paper, we investigate a general integrable nonlocal coupled nonlinear schrödinger (NLS) system with the the parity-time (PT) symmetry, which contains not only the nonlocal self-phase modulation and the nonlocal cross-phase modulation, but also the nonlocal four-wave mixing terms. This nonlocal coupled NLS system is a nonlocal version of a coupled NLS system. The general Nth Darboux transformation for the nonlocal coupled NLS equation is constructed. By using the Darboux transformation, its soliton solutions are obtained.
