The $b$-family is a one-parameter family of Hamiltonian partial differential equations of non-evolutionary type, which arises in shallow water wave theory. It admits a variety of solutions, including the celebrated peakons, which are weak solutions in the form of peaked solitons with a discontinuous first derivative at the peaks, as well as other interesting solutions that have been obtained in exact form and/or numerically. In each of the special cases $b=2,3$ (the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations, respectively) the equation is completely integrable, in the sense that it admits a Lax pair and an infinite hierarchy of commuting local symmetries, but for other values of the parameter $b$ it is non-integrable. After a discussion of travelling waves via the use of a reciprocal transformation, which reduces to a hodograph transformation at the level of the ordinary differential equation satisfied by these solutions, we apply the same technique to the scaling similarity solutions of the $b$-family, and show that when $b=2$ or $3$ this similarity reduction is related by a hodograph transformation to particular cases of the Painlevé III equation, while for all other choices of $b$ the resulting ordinary differential equation is not of Painlevé type.
We consider the scaling similarity solutions of two integrable cubically nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) that admit peaked soliton (peakon) solutions, namely the modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation and Novikov's equation. By making use of suitable reciprocal transformations, which map the mCH equation and Novikov's equation to a negative mKdV flow and a negative Sawada-Kotera flow, respectively, we show that each of these scaling similarity reductions is related via a hodograph transformation to an equation of Painlevé type: for the mCH equation, its reduction is of second ord…
Using the tri-hamiltonian splitting method, the authors of [Anco and Mobasheramini, Physica D, 355:1--23, 2017] derived two $U(1)$-invariant nonlinear PDEs that arise from the hierarchy of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and admit peakons ($non-smooth\ solitons$). In the present paper, these two peakon PDEs are generalized to a family of $U(1)$-invariant peakon PDEs parametrized by the real projective line $ \mathbf{RP} ^1$. All equations in this family are shown to posses $conservative\ peakon \ solutions$ (whose Sobolev $H^1(\mathbf{R})$ norm is time invariant). The Hamiltonian structure …
We investigate a family of peakon equations, labelled by two parameters $b$ and $κ$, all of which admit one-peakon solutions in a unified form. The well known Camassa-Holm equation and Degasperis-Procesi equation are derived from the b-family peakon equations by choosing $b=2$ and 3, respectively. For all values of $b$, their two peakon-type solutions are shown in difference form and in weak sense. At the same time, the dynamic behaviors are shown in difference phenomenons, such as the peaked waves collide elastically in the case $b=2$, while the peaked waves collide inelastically in other cas…
We prove spectral instability of peakons in the $b$-family of Camassa--Holm equations in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ that includes the integrable cases of $b = 2$ and $b = 3$. We start with a linearized operator defined on functions in $H^1(\mathbb{R}) \cap W^{1,\infty}(\mathbb{R})$ and extend it to a linearized operator defined on weaker functions in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. For $b \neq \frac{5}{2}$, the spectrum of the linearized operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ is proved to cover a closed vertical strip of the complex plane. For $b = \frac{5}{2}$, the strip shrinks to the imaginary axis, but an additional pai…
In the present work we revisit the $b$-family model of peakon equations, containing as special cases the $b=2$ (Camassa-Holm) and $b=3$ (Degasperis-Procesi) integrable examples. We establish information about the point spectrum of the peakon solutions and notably find that for suitably smooth perturbations there exists point spectrum in the right half plane rendering the peakons unstable for $b<1$. We explore numerically these ideas in the realm of fixed-point iterations, spectral stability analysis and time-stepping of the model for the different parameter regimes. In particular, we identify …
A 4-parameter polynomial family of equations generalizing the Camassa-Holm and Novikov equations that describe breaking waves is introduced. A classification of low-order conservation laws, peaked travelling wave solutions, and Lie symmetries is presented for this family. These classifications pick out a 1-parameter equation that has several interesting features: it reduces to the Camassa-Holm and Novikov equations when the polynomial has degree two and three; it has a conserved $H^1$ norm and it possesses $N$-peakon solutions, when the polynomial has any degree; and it exhibits wave-breaking …
In this Letter we propose that for Lax integrable nonlinear partial differential equations the natural concept of weak solutions is implied by the compatibility condition for the respective distributional Lax pairs. We illustrate our proposal by comparing two concepts of weak solutions of the modified Camassa-Holm equation pointing out that in the peakon sector (a family of non-smooth solitons) only one of them, namely the one obtained from the distributional compatibility condition, supports the time invariance of the Sobolev $H^1$ norm.
We consider a one-parameter family of non-evolutionary partial differential equations which includes the integrable Camassa-Holm equation and a new equation first isolated by Degasperis and Procesi. A Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulation is presented for the whole family of equations, and we discuss how this fits into a bi-Hamiltonian framework in the integrable cases. The Hamiltonian dynamics of peakons and some other special finite-dimensional reductions are also described.
The Lax pair formulation of the two-component Camassa-Holm equation (CH2) is generalized to produce an integrable multi-component family, CH(n,k), of equations with $n$ components and $1\le |k|\le n$ velocities. All of the members of the CH(n,k) family show fluid-dynamics properties with coherent solitons following particle characteristics. We determine their Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian structures and give numerical examples of their soliton solution behaviour. We concentrate on the CH(2,k) family with one or two velocities, including the CH(2,-1) equation in the Dym position of the CH2 hierarchy.…

In the field of mathematical physics, there exist many physically interesting nonlinear dispersive equations with peakon solutions, which are solitary waves with discontinuous first-order derivative at the wave peak. In this paper, we apply the multi-layer physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) deep learning to successfully study the data-driven peakon and periodic peakon solutions of some well-known nonlinear dispersion equations with initial-boundary value conditions such as the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, Degasperis-Procesi equation, modified CH equation with cubic nonlinearity, Novikov e…
We consider a family of integro-differential equations depending upon a parameter $b$ as well as a symmetric integral kernel $g(x)$. When $b=2$ and $g$ is the peakon kernel (i.e. $g(x)=\exp(-|x|)$ up to rescaling) the dispersionless Camassa-Holm equation results, while the Degasperis-Procesi equation is obtained from the peakon kernel with $b=3$. Although these two cases are integrable, generically the corresponding integro-PDE is non-integrable. However, for $b=2$ the family restricts to the pulson family of Fringer & Holm, which is Hamiltonian and numerically displays elastic scattering of pu…
We consider a Lax pair found by Xia, Qiao and Zhou for a family of two-component analogues of the Camassa-Holm equation, including an arbitrary function $H$, and show that this apparent freedom can be removed via a combination of a reciprocal transformation and a gauge transformation, which reduces the system to triangular form. The resulting triangular system may or may not be integrable, depending on the choice of $H$. In addition, we apply the formal series approach of Dubrovin and Zhang to show that scalar equations of Camassa-Holm type with homogeneous nonlinear terms of degree greater th…
The integrability of a family of hamiltonian systems, describing in a particular case the motionof N ``peakons" (special solutions of the so-called Camassa-Holm equation) is established in the framework of the $r$-matrix approach, starting from its Lax representation. In the general case, the $r$-matrix is a dynamical one and has an interesting though complicated structure. However, for a particular choice of the relevant parameters in the hamiltonian (the one corresponding to the pure ``peakons" case), the $r$-matrix becomes essentially constant, and reduces to the one pertaining to the finit…
Motivated by the Novikov equation and its peakon problem, we propose a new mixed type Hermite--Padé approximation whose unique solution is a sequence of polynomials constructed with the help of Pfaffians. These polynomials belong to the family of recently proposed partial-skew-orthogonal polynomials. The relevance of partial-skew-orthogonal polynomials is especially visible in the approximation problem germane to the Novikov peakon problem so that we obtain explicit inverse formulae in terms of Pfaffians by reformulating the inverse spectral problem for the Novikov multipeakons. Furthermore, w…
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for an integrable multi-component (2N-component) peakon system which is involved in an arbitrary polynomial function. Based on a generalized Ovsyannikov type theorem, we first prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for the system in the Gevrey-Sobolev spaces with the lower bound of the lifespan. Then we show the continuity of the data-to-solution map for the system. Furthermore, by introducing a family of continuous diffeomorphisms of a line and utilizing the fine structure of the system, we demonstrate the system exhibits unique continuation…
The Novikov equation is an integrable analogue of the Camassa-Holm equation with a cubic (rather than quadratic) nonlinear term. Both these equations support a special family of weak solutions called multipeakon solutions. In this paper, an approach involving Pfaffians is applied to study multipeakons of the Novikov equation. First, we show that the Novikov peakon ODEs describe an isospectral flow on the manifold cut out by certain Pfaffian identities. Then, a link between the Novikov peakons and the finite Toda lattice of BKP type (B-Toda lattice) is established based on the use of Pfaffians.…
We consider a family of homogeneous nonlinear dispersive equations with two arbitrary parameters. Conservation laws are established from the point symmetries and imply that the whole family admits square integrable solutions. Recursion operators are found to two members of the family investigated. For one of them, a Lax pair is also obtained, proving its complete integrability. From the Lax pair we construct a Miura-type transformation relating the original equation to the KdV equation. This transformation, on the other hand, enables us to obtain solutions of the equation from the kernel of a …
We apply the theory of Lie point symmetries for the study of a family of partial differential equations which are integrable by the hyperbolic reductions method and are reduced to members of the Painlevé transcendents. The main results of this study is that from the application of the similarity transformations provided by the Lie point symmetries all the members of the family of the partial differential equations are reduced to second-order differential equations which are maximal symmetric and can be linearized.
We apply the theory of infinitesimal transformations for the study of a family of 1+1 fifth-order partial differential equations which have been proposed before for the description of multiple kink solutions. In this analysis we perform a complete classification of the Lie symmetries and of the one-dimensional optimal system. The results are applied for the derivation of similarity solutions and in particular we find travel-wave and scaling solutions. We show that the kink-solution of these equations can be recovered by the use of the Lie symmetries, while new solutions are also derived.
We study a similarity reduction of the modified Yajima-Oikawa hierarchy. The hierarchy is associated with a non-standard Heisenberg subalgebra in the affine Lie algebra of type A_2^{(1)}. The system of equations for self-similar solutions is presented as a Hamiltonian system of degree of freedom two, and admits a group of Bäcklund transformations isomorphic to the affine Weyl group of type A_2^{(1)}. We show that the system is equivalent to a two-parameter family of the fifth Painlevé equation.
In this paper the Galilean, scaling and translational self--similarity conditions for the AKNS hierarchy are analysed geometrically in terms of the infinite dimensional Grassmannian. The string equations found recently by non--scaling limit analysis of the one--matrix model are shown to correspond to the Galilean self--similarity condition for this hierarchy. We describe, in terms of the initial data for the zero--curvature 1--form of the AKNS hierarchy, the moduli space of these self--similar solutions in the Sato Grassmannian. As a byproduct we characterize the points in the Segal--Wilson Gr…
