We adopt a vierbein formalism to study pseudo-Finsler spaces modeled on a pseudo-Minkowski space. We show that it is possible to obtain closed expressions for most of the geometric objects of the theory, including Berwald's curvature, Landsberg's tensor, Douglas' curvature, non-linear connection and Ricci scalar. These expressions are particularly convenient in computations since they factor the dependence on the base and the fiber. As an illustration, we study Lorentz-Finsler spaces modeled on the Bogoslovsky Lorentz-Minkowski space, and give sufficient conditions which guarantee the Berwald property. We then specialize to a recently proposed Finslerian pp-wave metric. Finally, the paper points out that non-trivial Berwald spaces have necessarily indicatrices which admit some non-trivial linear group of symmetries.
In this paper, we first establish an equivalence theorem of Minkowski spaces by using results in centro-affine differential geometry. As an application in Finsler geometry, we gives some new characterizations of Berwald spaces.
The paper develops the Finsler-like geometry on the 1-jet space for the jet conformal Minkowski (JCM) metric, which naturally extends the Minkowski metric in the Chernov-Pavlov framework. To this aim there are determined the nonlinear connection, distinguished (d-) Cartan linear connection, d-torsions and d-curvatures. The field geometrical gravitational and electromagnetic d-models based on the JCM metric are discussed.
In this paper, we introduce isoparametric functions and isoparametric hypersurfaces in conic Finsler spaces. We find that in a conic Minkowski space, besides the conic Minkowski hyperplanes, conic Minkowski hyperspheres and conic Minkowski cylinders, which are all isoparametric hypersurfaces, there are probably other isoparametric hypersurfaces, such as helicoids. Moreover, we give a complete classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in kropina spaces with constant flag curvature.
Let (M_1,F_1) and (M_2,F_2) be a pair of Finsler manifolds. The Minkowskian product Finsler manifold (M,F) of (M_1,F_1) and (M_2,F_2) with respect to a product function f is the product manifold M=M_1\times M_2 endowed with the Finsler metric F^2=f(K,H), where K=(F_1)^2,H=(F_2)^2. In this paper, the Cartan connection and Berwald connection of (M,F) are derived in terms of the corresponding objects of (M_1,F_1) and (M_2,F_2). Necessary and sufficient conditions for (M,F) to be Berwald (resp. weakly Berwald, Landsberg, weakly Landsberg) manifold are obtained. Thus an effective method for constru…
We give a new and complete proof of the following theorem, discovered by Detlef Laugwitz: (forward) complete and connected finite dimensional Finsler manifolds admitting a proper homothety are Minkowski vector spaces. More precisely, we show that under these hypotheses the Finsler manifold is isometric to the tangent Minkowski vector space of the fixed point of the homothety via the exponential map of the canonical spray of the Finsler manifold.
Finsler space is differentiable manifold for which Minkowski space is the fiber of the tangent bundle. To understand structure of the reference frame in Finsler space, we need to understand the structure of orthonormal basis in Minkowski space. In this paper, I considered the definition of orthonormal basis in Minkowski space, the structure of metric tensor relative to orthonormal basis, procedure of orthogonalization. Linear transformation of Minkowski space which preserves the scalar product is called a motion. Linear transformation which maps the orthonormal basis into an infinitely close o…
In this paper, we prove two rigidity results for non-positively curved homogeneous Finsler metrics. Our first main result yields an extension of Hu-Deng's well-known result proven for the Randers metrics. Indeed, we prove that every connected homogeneous Finsler space with non-positive flag curvature and isotropic S-curvature is Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. We extend the Szabó's rigidity theorem for Berwald surfaces and show that homogeneous isotropic Berwald metrics with non-positive flag curvature are Riemannian or locally Minkowskian. We prove that a homogeneous $(α, β)$-metrics has i…
In this paper, we introduce isoparametric functions and isoparametric hypersurfaces in Finsler manifolds and give the necessary and sufficient conditions for a transnormal function to be isoparametric. We then prove that hyperplanes, Minkowski hyperspheres and $F^*$-Minkowski cylinders in a Minkowski space with $BH$-volume (resp. $HT$-volume) form are all isoparametric hypersurfaces with one and two distinct constant principal curvatures respectively. Moreover, we give a complete classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in Randers-Minkowski spaces and construct a counter example, which sh…
Studying the geometric flow plays a powerful role in mathematics and physics. In this paper, we introduce the mean curvature flow on Finsler manifolds and give a number of examples of the mean curvature flow. For Minkowski spaces, a special case of Finsler manifolds, we will prove the existence and uniqueness for solution of the mean curvature flow and prove that the flow preserves the convexity and mean convexity. We also derive some comparison principles for the mean curvature flow.
In Minkowski geometry the metric features are based on a compact convex body containing the origin in its interior. This body works as a unit ball with its boundary formed by the unit vectors. Using one-homogeneous extension we have a so-called Minkowski functional to measure the lenght of vectors. The half of its square is called the energy function. Under some regularity conditions we can introduce an average Euclidean inner product by integrating the Hessian matrix of the energy function on the Minkowskian unit sphere. Changing the origin in the interior of the body we have a collection of …
The paper aims to initiate a systematic study of conformal mappings between Finsler spacetimes and, more generally, between pseudo-Finsler spaces. This is done by extending several results in pseudo-Riemannian geometry which are necessary for field-theoretical applications and by proposing a technique which reduces a series of problems involving pseudo-Finslerian conformal vector fields to their pseudo-Riemannian counterparts. Also, we point out, by constructing classes of examples, that conformal groups of flat (locally Minkowskian) pseudo-Finsler spaces can be much richer than both flat Fins…
Finsler space is differentiable manifold for which Minkowski space is the fiber of the tangent bundle. To understand structure of the reference frame in Finsler space, we need to understand the structure of orthonormal basis in Minkowski space. In this paper, we considered the definition of orthonormal basis in Minkowski space, the structure of metric tensor relative to orthonormal basis, procedure of orthogonalization. Linear transformation of Minkowski space mapping at least one orthonormal basis into orthonormal basis is called motion. The set of motions of Minkowski space V generates not c…
A particular Finsler-metric proposed in [1,2] and describing a geometry with a preferred null direction is characterized here as belonging to a subclass contained in a larger class of Finsler-metrics with one or more preferred directions (null, space- or timelike). The metrics are classified according to their group of isometries. These turn out to be isomorphic to subgroups of the Poincaré (Lorentz-) group complemented by the generator of a dilatation. The arising Finsler geometries may be used for the construction of relativistic theories testing the isotropy of space. It is shown that the F…
We study contractivity properties of gradient flows for functions on normed spaces or, more generally, on Finsler manifolds. Contractivity of the flows turns out to be equivalent to a new notion of convexity for the functions. This is different from the usual convexity along geodesics in non-Riemannian Finsler manifolds. As an application, we show that the heat flow on Minkowski normed spaces other than inner product spaces is not contractive with respect to the quadratic Wasserstein distance.
Given a Finsler space, we introduce a system of partial differential equations, called the Landsberg equation. Based on a careful analysis of the Landsberg equation and the observation that the solution space is invariant under the linear isometries of the tangent Minkowski spaces, we prove that an $(α_1, α_2)$-metric of the Landsberg type must be a Berwald metric. This shows that the hunting for a unicorn, one of the longest standing open problem in Finsler geometry, cannot be successful even in the very broad class of $(α_1,α_2)$-metrics.
In Minkowski geometry the unit ball is a compact convex body $K$ containing the origin in its interior. The boundary of the body is formed by the unit vectors. We also have a so-called Minkowski functional to measure the length of vectors. By changing the origin in the interior of the body we have a smoothly varying family of Minkowski functionals. This is called the Funk metric. Under some regularity conditions the Minkowski functionals allow us to measure the volume (area) of the indicatrix bodies (hypersurfaces). Some homogenity properties provide the volume and the area to be proportional.…
We consider Finsler submanifolds $M^n$ of nonnegative Ricci curvature in a Minkowski space $\mathbb{M}^{n+p}$ which contain a line or whose relative nullity index is positive. For hypersurfaces, submanifolds of codimension two or of dimension two, we prove that the submanifold is a cylinder, under a certain condition on the inertia of the pencil of the second fundamental forms. We give an example of a surface of positive flag curvature in a three-dimensional Minkowski space which is not locally convex.
First we present a short overview of the long history of projectively flat Finsler spaces. We give a simple and quite elementary proof of the already known condition for the projective flatness, and we give a criterion for the projective flatness of a special Lagrange space (Theorem 1). After this we obtain a second-order PDE system, whose solvability is necessary and sufficient for a Finsler space to be projectively flat (Theorem 2). We also derive a condition in order that an infinitesimal transformation takes geodesics of a Finsler space into geodesics. This yields a Killing type vector fie…
For a standard Finsler metric F on a manifold M, its domain is the whole tangent bundle TM and its fundamental tensor g is positive-definite. However, in many cases (for example, the well-known Kropina and Matsumoto metrics), these two conditions are relaxed, obtaining then either a pseudo-Finsler metric (with arbitrary g) or a conic Finsler metric (with domain a "conic" open domain of TM). Our aim is twofold. First, to give an account of quite a few subtleties which appear under such generalizations, say, for conic pseudo-Finsler metrics (including, as a previous step, the case of Minkowski c…
The concept of subdifferentiability is studied in the context of $C^1$ Finsler manifolds (modeled on a Banach space with a Lipschitz $C^1$ bump function). A class of Hamilton-Jacobi equations defined on $C^1$ Finsler manifolds is studied and several results related to the existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions are obtained.
Berwald metrics are particular Finsler metrics which still have linear Berwald connections. Their complete classification is established in an earlier work, [Sz1], of this author. The main tools in these classification are the Simons-Berger holonomy theorem and the Weyl-group theory. It turnes out that any Berwald metric is a perturbed-Cartesian product of Riemannian, Minkowski, and such non-Riemannian metrics which can be constructed on irreducible symmetric manifolds of $rank > 1$. The existence of these metrics are well established by the above theories. The present paper has several new fe…
We study stationary configurations mimicking nonholonomic locally anisotropic black rings (for instance, with ellipsoidal polarizations and/or imbedded into solitonic backgrounds) in three/six dimensional pseudo-Finsler/ Riemannian spacetimes. In the asymptotically flat limit, for holonomic configurations, a subclass of such spacetimes contains the set of five dimensional black ring solutions with regular rotating event horizon. For corresponding parameterizations, the metrics and connections define Finsler-Einstein geometries modeled on tangent bundles, or on nonholonomic (pseudo) Riemannian …
We synthesize and extend the previous ideas about appearance of both noncommutative and Finsler geometry in string theory with nonvanishing B--field and/or anholonomic (super) frame structures \cite{vstring,vstr2,vnonc,vncf}. There are investigated the limits to the Einstein gravity and string generalizations containing locally anisotropic structures modeled by moving frames. The relation of anholonomic frames and nonlinear connection geometry to M--theory and possible noncommutative versions of locally anisotropic supergravity and D--brane physics is discussed. We construct and analyze new cl…
We develop the method of anholonomic frames with associated nonlinear connection (in brief, N--connection) structure and show explicitly how geometries with local anisotropy (various type of Finsler--Lagrange--Cartan--Hamilton geometry) can be modeled in the metric--affine spaces. There are formulated the criteria when such generalized Finsler metrics are effectively induced in the Einstein, teleparallel, Riemann--Cartan and metric--affine gravity. We argue that every generic off--diagonal metric (which can not be diagonalized by coordinate transforms) is related to specific N--connection conf…
We survey the geometry of Lagrange and Finsler spaces and discuss the issues related to the definition of curvature of nonholonomic manifolds enabled with nonlinear connection structure. It is proved that any commutative Riemannian geometry (in general, any Riemann--Cartan space) defined by a generic off--diagonal metric structure (with an additional affine connection possessing nontrivial torsion) is equivalent to a generalized Lagrange, or Finsler, geometry modeled on nonholonomic manifolds. This results in the problem of constructing noncommutative geometries with local anisotropy, in parti…
The main result of this paper is an expression of the flag curvature of a submanifold of a Randers-Minkowski space $({\mathscr V},F)$ in terms of invariants related to its Zermelo data $(h,W)$. More precisely, these invariants are the sectional curvature and the second fundamental form of the positive definite scalar product $h$ and some projections of the wind $W$. This expression allows for a promising characterization of submanifolds with scalar flag curvature in terms of Riemannian quantities, which, when a hypersurface is considered, seems quite approachable. As a consequence, we prove th…
In this paper two metric properties on geodesic length spaces are introduced by means of the metric projection, studying their validity on Alexandrov and Busemann NPC spaces. In particular, we prove that both properties characterize the non-positivity of the sectional curvature on Riemannian manifolds. Further results are also established on reversible/non-reversible Finsler-Minkowski spaces.
We generalize the higher rank rigidity theorem to a class of Finsler spaces, i.e. Berwald spaces. More precisely, we prove that a complete connected Berwald space of finite volume and bounded nonpositive flag curvature with rank at least $2$ whose universal cover is irreducible, is a locally symmetric space or a locally Minkowski space.
We show the existence of the full compound asymptotics of solutions to the scalar wave equation on long-range non-trapping Lorentzian manifolds modeled on the radial compactification of Minkowski space. In particular, we show that there is a joint asymptotic expansion at null and timelike infinity for forward solutions of the inhomogeneous equation. In two appendices we show how these results apply to certain spacetimes whose null infinity is modeled on that of the Kerr family. In these cases the leading order logarithmic term in our asymptotic expansions at null infinity is shown to be nonzer…
We consider a non-trapping $n$-dimensional Lorentzian manifold endowed with an end structure modeled on the radial compactification of Minkowski space. We find a full asymptotic expansion for tempered forward solutions of the wave equation in all asymptotic regimes. The rates of decay seen in the asymptotic expansion are related to the resonances of a natural asymptotically hyperbolic problem on the "northern cap" of the compactification. For small perturbations of Minkowski space that fit into our framework, we show a rate of decay that improves on the Klainerman--Sobolev estimates.
