In this paper, we first establish an equivalence theorem of Minkowski spaces by using results in centro-affine differential geometry. As an application in Finsler geometry, we gives some new characterizations of Berwald spaces.
The paper develops the Finsler-like geometry on the 1-jet space for the jet conformal Minkowski (JCM) metric, which naturally extends the Minkowski metric in the Chernov-Pavlov framework. To this aim there are determined the nonlinear connection, distinguished (d-) Cartan linear connection, d-torsions and d-curvatures. The field geometrical gravitational and electromagnetic d-models based on the JCM metric are discussed.
In this paper, we introduce isoparametric functions and isoparametric hypersurfaces in conic Finsler spaces. We find that in a conic Minkowski space, besides the conic Minkowski hyperplanes, conic Minkowski hyperspheres and conic Minkowski cylinders, which are all isoparametric hypersurfaces, there are probably other isoparametric hypersurfaces, such as helicoids. Moreover, we give a complete classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in kropina spaces with constant flag curvature.
We give a new and complete proof of the following theorem, discovered by Detlef Laugwitz: (forward) complete and connected finite dimensional Finsler manifolds admitting a proper homothety are Minkowski vector spaces. More precisely, we show that under these hypotheses the Finsler manifold is isometric to the tangent Minkowski vector space of the fixed point of the homothety via the exponential map of the canonical spray of the Finsler manifold.
In this paper we study warped product Finsler metrics and show that the notion of isotropic $E$-curvature and isotropic $S$-curvature are equivalent for this class of metrics.
We adopt a vierbein formalism to study pseudo-Finsler spaces modeled on a pseudo-Minkowski space. We show that it is possible to obtain closed expressions for most of the geometric objects of the theory, including Berwald's curvature, Landsberg's tensor, Douglas' curvature, non-linear connection and Ricci scalar. These expressions are particularly convenient in computations since they factor the dependence on the base and the fiber. As an illustration, we study Lorentz-Finsler spaces modeled on the Bogoslovsky Lorentz-Minkowski space, and give sufficient conditions which guarantee the Berwald …
In this paper, we introduce isoparametric functions and isoparametric hypersurfaces in Finsler manifolds and give the necessary and sufficient conditions for a transnormal function to be isoparametric. We then prove that hyperplanes, Minkowski hyperspheres and $F^*$-Minkowski cylinders in a Minkowski space with $BH$-volume (resp. $HT$-volume) form are all isoparametric hypersurfaces with one and two distinct constant principal curvatures respectively. Moreover, we give a complete classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in Randers-Minkowski spaces and construct a counter example, which sh…
Finsler space is differentiable manifold for which Minkowski space is the fiber of the tangent bundle. To understand structure of the reference frame in Finsler space, we need to understand the structure of orthonormal basis in Minkowski space. In this paper, I considered the definition of orthonormal basis in Minkowski space, the structure of metric tensor relative to orthonormal basis, procedure of orthogonalization. Linear transformation of Minkowski space which preserves the scalar product is called a motion. Linear transformation which maps the orthonormal basis into an infinitely close o…
Studying the geometric flow plays a powerful role in mathematics and physics. In this paper, we introduce the mean curvature flow on Finsler manifolds and give a number of examples of the mean curvature flow. For Minkowski spaces, a special case of Finsler manifolds, we will prove the existence and uniqueness for solution of the mean curvature flow and prove that the flow preserves the convexity and mean convexity. We also derive some comparison principles for the mean curvature flow.
In Minkowski geometry the metric features are based on a compact convex body containing the origin in its interior. This body works as a unit ball with its boundary formed by the unit vectors. Using one-homogeneous extension we have a so-called Minkowski functional to measure the lenght of vectors. The half of its square is called the energy function. Under some regularity conditions we can introduce an average Euclidean inner product by integrating the Hessian matrix of the energy function on the Minkowskian unit sphere. Changing the origin in the interior of the body we have a collection of …
The paper aims to initiate a systematic study of conformal mappings between Finsler spacetimes and, more generally, between pseudo-Finsler spaces. This is done by extending several results in pseudo-Riemannian geometry which are necessary for field-theoretical applications and by proposing a technique which reduces a series of problems involving pseudo-Finslerian conformal vector fields to their pseudo-Riemannian counterparts. Also, we point out, by constructing classes of examples, that conformal groups of flat (locally Minkowskian) pseudo-Finsler spaces can be much richer than both flat Fins…

In this paper, we considered the definition of orthonormal basis in Minkowski space, the structure of metric tensor relative to orthonormal basis, procedure of orthogonalization. Linear transformation of Minkowski space mapping at least one orthonormal basis into orthonormal basis is called motion. The set of motions of Minkowski space V generates not c…
Given a Finsler space, we introduce a system of partial differential equations, called the Landsberg equation. Based on a careful analysis of the Landsberg equation and the observation that the solution space is invariant under the linear isometries of the tangent Minkowski spaces, we prove that an $(α_1, α_2)$-metric of the Landsberg type must be a Berwald metric. This shows that the hunting for a unicorn, one of the longest standing open problem in Finsler geometry, cannot be successful even in the very broad class of $(α_1,α_2)$-metrics.
In this paper, the Cartan tensors of the $(α,β)$-norms are investigated in details. Then an equivalence theorem of $(α,β)$-norms is proved. As a consequence in Finsler geometry, general $(α,β)$-metrics on smooth manifolds of dimension $n\geq4$ with vanishing Landsberg curvatures must be Berwald manifolds.
In Minkowski geometry the unit ball is a compact convex body $K$ containing the origin in its interior. The boundary of the body is formed by the unit vectors. We also have a so-called Minkowski functional to measure the length of vectors. By changing the origin in the interior of the body we have a smoothly varying family of Minkowski functionals. This is called the Funk metric. Under some regularity conditions the Minkowski functionals allow us to measure the volume (area) of the indicatrix bodies (hypersurfaces). Some homogenity properties provide the volume and the area to be proportional.…
The projective Finsler metrizability problem deals with the question whether a projective-equivalence class of sprays is the geodesic class of a (locally or globally defined) Finsler function. In this paper we use Hilbert-type forms to state a number of different ways of specifying necessary and sufficient conditions for this to be the case, and we show that they are equivalent. We also address several related issues of interest including path spaces, Jacobi fields, totally-geodesic submanifolds of a spray space, and the equivalence of path geometries and projective-equivalence classes of spra…
We consider Finsler submanifolds $M^n$ of nonnegative Ricci curvature in a Minkowski space $\mathbb{M}^{n+p}$ which contain a line or whose relative nullity index is positive. For hypersurfaces, submanifolds of codimension two or of dimension two, we prove that the submanifold is a cylinder, under a certain condition on the inertia of the pencil of the second fundamental forms. We give an example of a surface of positive flag curvature in a three-dimensional Minkowski space which is not locally convex.
First we present a short overview of the long history of projectively flat Finsler spaces. We give a simple and quite elementary proof of the already known condition for the projective flatness, and we give a criterion for the projective flatness of a special Lagrange space (Theorem 1). After this we obtain a second-order PDE system, whose solvability is necessary and sufficient for a Finsler space to be projectively flat (Theorem 2). We also derive a condition in order that an infinitesimal transformation takes geodesics of a Finsler space into geodesics. This yields a Killing type vector fie…
In this paper the projective curvature invariants of a complex Finsler space are obtained. By means of these invariants the notion of complex Douglas space is then defined. A special approach is devoted to obtain the equivalence conditions that a complex Finsler space should be Douglas. It is shown that any weakly Kähler Douglas space is a complex Berwald space. A projective curvature invariant of Weyl type characterizes the complex Berwald spaces. They must be either purely Hermitian of constant holomorphic curvature or non purely Hermitian of vanish holomorphic curvature. The locally project…
We study contractivity properties of gradient flows for functions on normed spaces or, more generally, on Finsler manifolds. Contractivity of the flows turns out to be equivalent to a new notion of convexity for the functions. This is different from the usual convexity along geodesics in non-Riemannian Finsler manifolds. As an application, we show that the heat flow on Minkowski normed spaces other than inner product spaces is not contractive with respect to the quadratic Wasserstein distance.
We study isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the (n+1)-dimensional Minkowski space up to orbit-equivalence. We give examples of isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the Minkowski space whose orbit spaces are non-Hausdorff. We show that there exist isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the Minkowski space which are orbit-equivalent on the complement of an n-dimensional degenerate subspace and not orbit-equivalent on this degenerate subspace. We classify isometric cohomogeneity one actions on 2- and 3-dimensional Minkowski spaces up to orbit-equivalence.
We introduce and study deformation $T_{{\bf b},ϕ}$ of Minkowski norms in $\mathbb{R}^n$, determined by a set ${\bf b}=(β_1,\ldots,β_p)$ of linearly independent 1-forms and a smooth positive function $ϕ$ of $p$ variables. In particular, the $T_{{\bf b},ϕ}$-image of a Euclidean norm $α$ is a Minkowski norm, whose indicatrix is a rotation hypersurface with a $p$-dimensional axis passing through the origin. For $p=1$, our deformation generalizes construction of $(α,β)$-norm; the last ones form a rich class of "computable" Minkowski norms and play an important role in Finsler geometry. We use compo…
A particular Finsler-metric proposed in [1,2] and describing a geometry with a preferred null direction is characterized here as belonging to a subclass contained in a larger class of Finsler-metrics with one or more preferred directions (null, space- or timelike). The metrics are classified according to their group of isometries. These turn out to be isomorphic to subgroups of the Poincaré (Lorentz-) group complemented by the generator of a dilatation. The arising Finsler geometries may be used for the construction of relativistic theories testing the isotropy of space. It is shown that the F…
A systematic approach has been developed to encompass the Minkowski-type extension of Euclidean geometry such that a one-vector anisotropy is permitted, retaining simultaneously the concept of angle. For the respective geometry, the Euclidean unit ball is to be replaced by the body which is convex and rotund and is found on assuming that its surface (the indicatrix extending the unit sphere) is a space of constant positive curvature. We have called the body the Finsleroid in view of its intrinsic relationship with the metric function of Finsler type. The main point of the present paper is the …
Our previous exploration of the $\cE_g^{PD}$-geometry has shown that the field is promising. Namely, the $\cE_g^{PD}$-approach is amenable to development of novel trends in relativistic and metric differential geometry and can particularly be effective in context of the Finslerian or Minkowskian Geometries. The main point of the present paper is the tenet that the $\cE_g^{PD}$-space-associated one-vector Finslerian metric function admits in quite a natural way an attractive two-vector extension, thereby giving rise to angle and scalar product. The underlying idea is to derive the angular measu…
The radar experiment connects the geometry of spacetime with an observers measurement of spatial length. We investigate the radar experiment on Finsler spacetimes which leads to a general definition of radar orthogonality and radar length. The directions radar orthogonal to an observer form the spatial equal time surface an observer experiences and the radar length is the physical length the observer associates to spatial objects. We demonstrate these concepts on a forth order polynomial Finsler spacetime geometry which may emerge from area metric or pre-metric linear electrodynamics or in qua…
The main result of this paper is an expression of the flag curvature of a submanifold of a Randers-Minkowski space $({\mathscr V},F)$ in terms of invariants related to its Zermelo data $(h,W)$. More precisely, these invariants are the sectional curvature and the second fundamental form of the positive definite scalar product $h$ and some projections of the wind $W$. This expression allows for a promising characterization of submanifolds with scalar flag curvature in terms of Riemannian quantities, which, when a hypersurface is considered, seems quite approachable. As a consequence, we prove th…
For every Finsler metric $F$ we associate a Riemannian metric $g_F$ (called the Binet-Legendre metric). The transformation $F \mapsto g_F$ is $C^0$-stable and has good smoothness properties, in contrast to previous constructions. The Riemannian metric $g_F$ also behaves nicely under conformal or bilipshitz deformation of the Finsler metric $F$. These properties makes it a powerful tool in Finsler geometry and we illustrate that by solving a number of named Finslerian geometric problems. We also generalize and give new and shorter proofs of a number of known results. In particular we answer a q…
By studying $L^p$-combinations of strongly isomorphic polytopes, we prove the equivalence of the $L^p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality conjectured by Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang to the local version of the inequality studied by Colesanti, Livshyts, and Marsiglietti and by Kolesnikov and Milman, settling a conjecture of the latter authors. In addition, we prove the local inequality in dimension $2$, yielding a new proof of the $L^p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality in the plane.
The aim of this paper is to classify cohomogeneity one isometric actions on the 4-dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$, up to orbit equivalence. Representations, up to conjugacy, of the acting groups in $O(3,1)\ltimes \mathbb{R}^{3,1}$ are given in both cases, proper and non-proper actions. When the action is proper, the orbits and the orbit spaces are determined.
We consider a triality between the Zermelo navigation problem, the geodesic flow on a Finslerian geometry of Randers type, and spacetimes in one dimension higher admitting a timelike conformal Killing vector field. From the latter viewpoint, the data of the Zermelo problem are encoded in a (conformally) Painleve-Gullstrand form of the spacetime metric, whereas the data of the Randers problem are encoded in a stationary generalisation of the usual optical metric. We discuss how the spacetime viewpoint gives a simple and physical perspective on various issues, including how Finsler geometries wi…
We generalize the higher rank rigidity theorem to a class of Finsler spaces, i.e. Berwald spaces. More precisely, we prove that a complete connected Berwald space of finite volume and bounded nonpositive flag curvature with rank at least $2$ whose universal cover is irreducible, is a locally symmetric space or a locally Minkowski space.
We prove three facts about intrinsic geometry of surfaces in a normed (Minkowski) space. When put together, these facts demonstrate a rather intriguing picture. We show that (1) geodesics on saddle surfaces (in a space of any dimension) behave as they are expected to: they have no conjugate points and thus minimize length in their homotopy class; (2) in contrast, every two-dimensional Finsler manifold can be locally embedded as a saddle surface in a 4-dimensional space; and (3) geodesics on convex surfaces in a 3-dimensional space also behave as they are expected to: on a complete strictly con…
A new characterization of conformal transformations is given. By use of this, the general form of conformal transformation on two-dimensional Minkowski space is given and its conformal structure is analyzed.
In this paper, the parallel transport frames over non-lightlike curves in Minkowski 3-space are introduced. Evolution equations of these frames with respect to arc length and time are calculated over the space of these curves. Then the equivalence of the non-linear Schrödinger equation and non-linear heat system to the vortex filament equation for the binormal motion of non-lightlike curves is shown by use of the parallel frames and their evolution equations.
The Cayley transform compactifies Minkowski space $\M$, realized as self-adjoint $2\times2$ complex matrices following Penrose, as the unitary group $\U(2)$. Its complement is a compactification of a copy of a light-cone as it is usually drawn, constructed by adjoining a bubble or $\CP_1$ of unitary matrices with eigenvalue $\pm 1$ at the ends of a lightcone at infinity. The Brauer-Wall group of $\U(2)$ (i.e. of fields of certain kinds of graded $\Cs$-algebras, up to projective equivalence) is $\Z_2 \times \Z$, defining an interesting class of nontrivial examples of Araki-Haag-Kastler backgrou…
