Minkowski's second theorem can be stated as an inequality for $n$-dimensional flat Finsler tori relating the volume and the minimal product of the lengths of closed geodesics which form a homology basis. In this paper we show how this fundamental result can be promoted to a principle holding for a larger class of Finsler manifolds. This includes manifolds for which first Betti number and dimension do no necessarily coincide, a prime example being the case of surfaces. This class of manifolds is described by a non-vanishing condition for the hyperdeterminant reduced modulo $2$ of the multilinear map induced by the fundamental class of the manifold on its first ${\mathbb Z}_2$-cohomology group using the cup product.
If L is an oriented link with $n$ components, then the rank of its Khovanov homology is at least $2^n$. We classify all the links whose Khovanov homology with Z/2-coefficients achieves this lower bound, and show that such links can be obtained by iterated connected sums and disjoint unions of Hopf links and unknots. This gives a positive answer to a question asked by Batson and Seed.
This paper has been withdrawn since it is superated by the latest version of arXiv:0812.1139 (this is the version which will appear in Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo; it is a strengthening and elaboration of a paper published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 144, 397-401 (2008))
We consider the following problem: for which classes of finite groups, and in particular finite simple groups, does the minimal dimension of a faithful, smooth action on a homology sphere coincide with the minimal dimension of a faithful, linear action on a sphere? We prove that the two minimal dimensions coincide for the linear fractional groups PSL(2,p) as well as for various classes of alternating and symmetric groups. We prove analogous results also for actions on Euclidean spaces.
We show that the equivariant chain complex associated to a minimal CW-structure X on the complement M(A) of a hyperplane arrangement A, is independent of X. When A is a sufficiently general linear section of an aspheric arrangement, we explain a new way for computing the twisted homology of M(A).
We study surface representatives of homology classes of finite complexes which minimize certain complexity measures, including its genus and Euler characteristic. Our main result is that up to surgery at nullhomotopic curves minimizers are homotopic to cellwise coverings to the 2-skeleton. From this we conclude that the minimizing problem is in general algorithmically undecidable, but can be solved for 2-dimensional CAT(-1)-complexes.
We study global aspects of the mean curvature flow of non-separating hypersurfaces $S$ in closed manifolds. For instance, if $S$ has non-vanishing mean curvature, we show its level set flow converges smoothly towards an embedded minimal hypersurface $Γ$. We prove a similar result for the flow with surgery in dimension 2. As an application we show the existence of monotone incompressible isotopies in manifolds with negative curvature. Combining this result with min-max theory, we show that quasi-Fuchsian and hyperbolic $3$-manifolds fibered over $\mathrm{S}^1$ admit smooth entire foliations who…
Suppose $(M, γ)$ is a balanced sutured manifold and $K$ is a rationally null-homologous knot in $M$. It is known that the rank of the sutured Floer homology of $M\backslash N(K)$ is at least twice the rank of the sutured Floer homology of $M$. This paper studies the properties of $K$ when the equality is achieved for instanton homology. As an application, we show that if $L\subset S^3$ is a fixed link and $K$ is a knot in the complement of $L$, then the instanton link Floer homology of $L\cup K$ achieves the minimum rank if and only if $K$ is the unknot in $S^3\backslash L$.
We define invariants $\frak{ds}$ and $\overline{\frak{ds}}$, which are the maximal and minimal second Betti number divided by $8$ among definite spin boundings of a homology sphere. The similar invariants $g_8$ and $\overline{g_8}$ are defined by the maximal (or minimal) product sum of $E_8$-form of bounding 4-manifolds. We compute these invariants for some homology spheres. We construct $E_8$-boundings for some of Brieskorn 3-spheres $Σ(2,3,12n+5)$ by handle decomposition. As a by-product of the construction, some negative classes which consist of addition of several fiber classes plus one se…
We refine some classical estimates in Seiberg-Witten theory, and discuss an application to the spectral geometry of three-manifolds. In particular, we show that on a rational homology three-sphere $Y$, for any Riemannian metric the first eigenvalue of the laplacian on coexact one-forms is bounded above explicitly in terms of the Ricci curvature, provided that $Y$ is not an $L$-space (in the sense of Floer homology). The latter is a purely topological condition, and holds in a variety of examples. Performing the analogous refinement in the case of manifolds with $b_1>0$, we obtain a gauge-theor…
We investigate constraints on embeddings of a non-orientable surface in a $4$-manifold with the homology of $M \times I$, where $M$ is a rational homology $3$-sphere. The constraints take the form of inequalities involving the genus and normal Euler class of the surface, and either the Ozsváth--Sazbó $d$-invariants or Atiyah--Singer $ρ$-invariants of $M$. One consequence is that the minimal genus of a smoothly embedded surface in $L(2p,q) \times I$ is the same as the minimal genus of a surface in $L(2p,q)$. We also consider embeddings of non-orientable surfaces in closed $4$-manifolds.
Given a hyperelliptic hyperbolic surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$, we find bounds on the lengths of homologically independent loops on $S$. As a consequence, we show that for any $λ\in (0,1)$ there exists a constant $N(λ)$ such that every such surface has at least $\lceil λ\cdot \frac{2}{3} g \rceil$ homologically independent loops of length at most $N(λ)$, extending the result in [Mu] and [BPS]. This allows us to extend the constant upper bound obtained in [Mu] on the minimal length of non-zero period lattice vectors of hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces to almost $\frac{2}{3} g$ linearly independ…
We study the sutured Floer homology invariants of the sutured manifold obtained by cutting a knot complement along a Seifert surface, R. We show that these invariants are finer than the "top term" of the knot Floer homology, which they contain. In particular, we use sutured Floer homology to distinguish two non-isotopic minimal genus Seifert surfaces for the knot 8_3. A key ingredient for this technique is finding appropriate Heegaard diagrams for the sutured manifold associated to the complement of a Seifert surface.
These lecture notes, which were designed for the Summer School "Heegaard-Floer Homology and Khovanov Homology" in Marseilles, 29th May - 2nd June, 2006, provide an elementary introduction to Khovanov homology. The intended audience is graduate students with some minimal background in low-dimensional and algebraic topology. The lectures cover the basic definitions, important properties, a number of variants and some applications. At the end of each lecture the reader is referred to the relevant literature for further reading.
In analogy with the Thurston norm, we define for an orientable 3-manifold $M$ a numerical function on $H_2(M;Q/Z)$. This function measures the minimal complexity of folded surfaces representing a given homology class. A similar function is defined on the torsion subgroup of $H_1(M)$. These functions are estimated from below in terms of abelian torsions of $M$.
The Temperley-Lieb algebra is a fundamental component of SU(2) topological quantum field theories. We construct chain complexes corresponding to minimal idempotents in the Temperley-Lieb algebra. Our results apply to the framework which determines Khovanov homology. Consequences of our work include semi-orthogonal decompositions of categorifications of Temperley-Lieb algebras and Postnikov decompositions of all Khovanov tangle invariants.
Suppose $Σ$ is a compact oriented surface (possibly with boundary) that has genus zero, and L is a link in the interior of $(-1,1)\timesΣ$. We prove that the Asaeda-Przytycki-Sikora (APS) homology of L has rank 2 if and only if L is isotopic to an embedded knot in $\{0\}\timesΣ$. As a consequence, the APS homology detects the unknot in $(-1,1)\timesΣ$. This is the first detection result for generalized Khovanov homology that is valid on an infinite family of manifolds, and it partially solves a conjecture in arxiv:2005.12863. Our proof is different from the previous detection results obtained …
An estimate for the genus function in circle bundles over irreducible 3-manifolds is proven. This estimate is in many cases an equality and it relates the minimal genus of the surfaces representing a given homology class with the self-intersection of the class and the Thurston norm of the underlying 3-manifold.
This paper explores the conjecture that the following are equivalent for rational homology 3-spheres: having left-orderable fundamental group, having non-minimal Heegaard Floer homology, and admitting a co-orientable taut foliation. In particular, it adds further evidence in favor of this conjecture by studying these three properties for more than 300,000 hyperbolic rational homology 3-spheres. New or much improved methods for studying each of these properties form the bulk of the paper, including a new combinatorial criterion, called a foliar orientation, for showing that a 3-manifold has a t…
Given a $1$-cohomology class $u$ on a closed manifold $M$, we define a Novikov fundamental group associated to $u$, generalizing the usual fundamental group in the same spirit as Novikov homology generalizes Morse homology to the case of non exact $1$-forms. As an application, lower bounds for the minimal number of index $1$ and $2$ critical points of Morse closed $1$-forms are obtained, that are different in nature from those derived from the Novikov homology.
We prove that for "most" closed 3-dimensional manifolds $M$, the existence of a closed non singular one-form in a given cohomology class $u\in H^1 (M,\bf R)$ is equivalent to the fact that every twisted Alexander polynomial $Δ^H(M,u) \in {\bf Z}[G/\ker u]$ associated to a normal subgroup with finite index $H < π_1(M)$ has a unitary $u$-minimal term.
Given a one-dimensional homology class in a lens space, a question related to the Berge conjecture on lens space surgeries is to determine all knots realizing the minimal rational genus of all knots in this homology class. It is known that simple knots are rational genus minimizers. In this paper, we construct many non-simple genus minimizers. This negatively answers a question of Rasmussen.
Froyshov invariants are numerical invariants of rational homology three-spheres derived from gradings in monopole Floer homology. In the past few years, they have been employed to solve a wide range of problems in three and four-dimensional topology. In this paper, we look at connections with hyperbolic geometry for the class of minimal $L$-spaces. In particular, we study relations between Froyshov invariants and closed geodesics using ideas from analytic number theory. We discuss two main applications of our approach. First, we derive effective upper bounds for the Froyshov invariants of mini…
We show that diagram groups can be viewed as fundamental groups of spaces of positive paths on directed 2-complexes (these spaces of paths turn out to be classifying spaces). Thus diagram groups are analogs of second homotopy groups, although diagram groups are as a rule non-Abelian. Part of the paper is a review of the previous results from this point of view. In particular, we show that the so called rigidity of the R.Thompson's group $F$ and some other groups is similar to the flat torus theorem. We find several finitely presented diagram groups (even of type F_\infty) each of which contain…
We consider a hyperbolic surface bundle over the circle with the smallest known volume among hyperbolic manifolds having 3 cusps, so called "the magic manifold". We compute the entropy function on the fiber face of the unit ball with respect to the Thurston norm, determine homology classes whose representatives are genus 0 fiber surfaces, and describe their monodromies by braids. Among such homology classes whose representatives have n punctures, we decide which one realizes the minimal entropy. It turns out that all the braids with smallest known entropy are derived from monodromies for such …
We study exotic smoothings of open 4-manifolds using the minimal genus function and its analog for end homology. While traditional techniques in open 4-manifold smoothing theory give no control of minimal genera, we make progress by using the adjunction inequality for Stein surfaces. Smoothings can be constructed with much more control of these genus functions than the compact setting seems to allow. As an application, we expand the range of 4-manifolds known to have exotic smoothings (up to diffeomorphism). For example, every 2-handlebody interior (possibly infinite or nonorientable) has an e…
We determine the minimum number of vertices needed to provide balanced triangulations of $\mathbb S^{d-2}$-bundles over $\mathbb S^1$. If $d$ is odd and the bundle is orientable, or $d$ is even and the bundle is non-orientable, the minimum number of vertices is $3d$; otherwise, it is $3d+2$. Similar results apply to all balanced simplicial complexes that triangulate homology manifolds with $β_1\neq 0$ and $β_2=0$, where $β_i$'s are the Betti numbers, computed with coefficients in $\mathbb Q$.
