We describe a new relation between the topology of hypersurface complements, Milnor fibers and degree of gradient mappings. The main tools are polar curves and the affine Lefschetz theory developped by H. Hamm and A. Némethi. In the special case of the hyperplane arrangements, we strengthen some results due to Orlik and Terao (see Math. Ann. 301(1995)) and obtain an independant proof for the minimality of hyperplane arrangements (see Randell math.AT/0011101 for another proof of this result).

Through the study of Morse theory on the associated Milnor fiber, we show that complex hyperplane arrangement complements are minimal. That is, the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement has the homotopy type of a CW complex in which the number of p-cells equals the p-th betti number.
We prove vanishing results of the cohomology groups of Aomoto complex over arbitrary coefficient ring for real hyperplane arrangements. The proof is using minimality of arrangements and descriptions of Aomoto complex in terms of chambers. Our methods also provide a new proof for the vanishing theorem of local system cohomology groups which was first proved by Cohen, Dimca and Orlik.
We construct a new class of maximal acyclic matchings on the Salvetti complex of a locally finite hyperplane arrangement. Using discrete Morse theory, we then obtain an explicit proof of the minimality of the complement. We prove that the complement of a toric arrangement has the homotopy type of a minimal CW complex. As a corollary we obtain that the integer cohomology of these spaces is torsion free. We use Discrete Morse Theory, providing a sequence of cellular collapses that leads to a minimal complex.
We find an explicit combinatorial gradient vector field on the well known complex S (Salvetti complex) which models the complement to an arrangement of complexified hyperplanes. The argument uses a total ordering on the facets of the stratification of R^n associated to the arrangement, which is induced by a generic system of polar coordinates. We give a combinatorial description of the singular facets, finding also an algebraic complex which computes local homology. We also give a precise construction in the case of the braid arrangement.
In this paper, we investigate certain graded-commutative rings which are related to the reciprocal plane compactification of the coordinate ring of a complement of a hyperplane arrangement. We use a well known problem in discrete and computational geometry (partitions of measures by $k$-fans) as a motivation and as a point of departure to illustrate many aspects, both theoretical and computational, of the problem of calculating the obstructions for the existence of equivariant maps. A variety of techniques are introduced and discussed with the emphasis on concrete and explicit calculations. This eventually leads (Theorems 18 and 19) to an almost exhaustive analysis of when such maps do or do not exist in the particular case of interest.

We consider a hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{C}^n$ defined over $\mathbb{R}$, and the associated natural stratification of $\mathbb{C}^n$. The category of perverse sheaves smooth with respect to this stratification was described by Kapranov and Schechtman in terms of quiver representations. We present a functorial computation of the equivariant intersection cohomology of a hypertoric variety, and endow it with a natural ring structure. When the hyperplane arrangement associated with the hypertoric variety is unimodular, we show that this ring structure is induced by a ring structure on the equivariant intersection cohomology sheaf in the equivariant derived category. The computation is given in terms of a localization functor which takes equivariant sheaves on a sufficiently nice stratified space to sheaves on a poset.
We show that the center of a flat graded deformation of a standard Koszul algebra behaves in many ways like the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of an algebraic variety with finite fixed-point set. In particular, the center acts by characters on the deformed standard modules, providing a "localization map." We construct a universal graded deformation, and show that the spectrum of its center is supported on a certain arrangement of hyperplanes which is orthogonal to the arrangement coming the Koszul dual algebra. We use the fixed point arrangement technique developed by Goresky-MacPherson to calculate the part of the equivariant cohomology of the affine flag varieties generated by degree 2. This turns out to be a quadric cone. We also describe the spectrum of the full equivariant cohomology ring as an explicit geometric object. We use our results to show that the vertices of the moment map images of the affine flag varieties lie on a paraboloid.
