Let $M$ and $τ$ be the supremum and its time of a Lévy process $X$ on some finite time interval. It is shown that zooming in on $X$ at its supremum, that is, considering $((X_{τ+t\varepsilon}-M)/a_\varepsilon)_{t\in\mathbb R}$ as $\varepsilon\downarrow 0$, results in $(ξ_t)_{t\in\mathbb R}$ constructed from two independent processes having the laws of some self-similar Lévy process $\widehat X$ conditioned to stay positive and negative. This holds when $X$ is in the domain of attraction of $\widehat X$ under the zooming-in procedure as opposed to the classical zooming out of Lamperti (1962). As an application of this result we establish a limit theorem for the discretization errors in simulation of supremum and its time, which extends the result of Asmussen, Glynn and Pitman (1995) for the Brownian motion. Additionally, complete characterization of the domains of attraction when zooming in on a Lévy process at 0 is provided.
For a Lévy process $X$ on a finite time interval consider the probability that it exceeds some fixed threshold $x>0$ while staying below $x$ at the points of a regular grid. We establish exact asymptotic behavior of this probability as the number of grid points tends to infinity. We assume that $X$ has a zooming-in limit, which necessarily is $1/α$-self-similar Lévy process with $α\in(0,2]$, and restrict to $α>1$. Moreover, the moments of the difference of the supremum and the maximum over the grid points are analyzed and their asymptotic behavior is derived. It is also shown that the zooming-…
This paper studies small-time behavior at the supremum of a diffusion process. For a solution to the SDE $\mathrm{d} X_t=μ(X_t)\mathrm{d} t+σ(X_t)\mathrm{d} W_t$ (where $W$ is a standard Brownian motion) we consider $(ε^{-1/2}(X_{m^X+εt}-\overline{X}))_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ as $ε\downarrow0$, where $\overline{X}$ is the supremum of $X$ on the time interval $[0,1]$ and $m^X$ is the time of the supremum. It is shown that this process converges in law to a process $\hatξ$, where $(\hatξ_t)_{t\geq0}$ and $(\hatξ_{-t})_{t\geq0}$ arise as independent Bessel-3 processes multiplied by $-σ(\overline{X})$. …
The location of the unique supremum of a stationary process on an interval does not need to be uniformly distributed over that interval. We describe all possible distributions of the supremum location for a broad class of such stationary processes. We show that, in the strongly mixing case, this distribution does tend to the uniform in a certain sense as the length of the interval increases to infinity.
We study the density of the supremum of a strictly stable Lévy process. We prove that for almost all values of the index $α$ -- except for a dense set of Lebesgue measure zero -- the asymptotic series which were obtained in A. Kuznetsov (2010) "On extrema of stable processes" are in fact absolutely convergent series representations for the density of the supremum.
We consider a process $Z$ on the real line composed from a Lévy process and its exponentially tilted version killed with arbitrary rates and give an expression for the joint law of $Z$ seen from its supremum, the supremum $\overline Z$ and the time $T$ at which the supremum occurs. In fact, it is closely related to the laws of the original and the tilted Lévy processes conditioned to stay negative and positive. The result is used to derive a new representation of stationary particle systems driven by Lévy processes. In particular, this implies that a max-stable process arising from Lévy proces…
In this article we derive formula for probability $\Prob(\sup_{t\leq T} (X(t)-ct)>u)$ where $X=\{X(t)\}$ is a spectrally positive Lévy process and $c\in\RL$. As an example we investigate the inverse Gaussian Lévy process.
In this paper we study the integral of the supremum process of standard Brownian motion. We present an explicit formula for the moments of the integral (or area) A(T), covered by the process in the time interval [0,T]. The Laplace transform of A(T) follows as a consequence. The main proof involves a double Laplace transform of A(T) and is based on excursion theory and local time for Brownian motion.
We derive explicit asymptotic expansions of the density of the supremum of a strictly stable process when the index $α$ is not rational. In the case when parameters $α$ and $ρ=\p(X_1>0)$ satisfy $ρ+k=l/α$ for some integers $k,l \ge 1$ we prove that these asymptotic expansions are in fact convergent series representations of the density of supremum.
We study positive random variables whose moments can be expressed by products and quotients of Gamma functions; this includes many standard distributions. General results are given on existence, series expansion and asymptotics of density functions. It is shown that the integral of the supremum process of Brownian motion has moments of this type, as well as a related random variable occuring in the study of hashing with linear displacement, and the general results are applied to these variables.
In this article we get simple explicit formulas for $\Exp\sup_{s\leq t}X(s)$ where $X$ is a spectrally positive or negative Lévy process with infinite variation. As a consequence we derive a generalization of the well-known formula for the supremum distribution of Wiener process that is we obtain $\Prob(\sup_{s\leq t}Z_α(s)\geq u)=α\Prob(Z_α(t)\geq u)$ for $u\geq 0$ where $Z_α$ is a spectrally negative Lévy process with $1<α\leq 2$ which also stems from Kendall's identity for the first crossing time. Our proof uses a formula for the supremum distribution of a spectrally positive Lévy process w…
Let (B^{(1)}_t ;B^{(2)}_t ;B^{(3)}_t + μt) be a three-dimensional Brownian motion with drift μ, starting at the origin. Then X_t = ||(B^{(1)}_t ;B^{(2)}_t ;B^{(3)}_t +μt)||, its distance from the starting point, is a diffusion with many applications. We investigate the distribution of the supremum of (X_t), give an infinite-series formula for its density and an exact estimate by elementary functions.
Path decomposition is performed to analyze the pre-supremum, post-supremum, post-infimum and the intermediate processes of a spectrally negative Levy process taken up to an independent exponential time T as motivated by the aim of finding the joint distribution of the maximum loss and maximum gain. In addition, the joint distribution of the supremum and the infimum before an exponential time is displayed. As an application of path decomposition, the distributions of supremum of the post-infimum process and the maximum loss of the post-supremum process are obtained.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of supremum distribution of some classes of iterated stochastic processes $\{X(Y(t)) : t \in [0, \infty)\}$, where $\{X(t) : t \in \mathbb{R} \}$ is a centered Gaussian process and $\{Y(t): t \in [0, \infty)\}$ is an independent of $\{X(t)\}$ stochastic process with a.s. continuous sample paths. In particular, the asymptotic behavior of $\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{s \in [0,T]} X(Y(s)) > u\right)$ as $u \to \infty$, where $T > 0$, as well as $\lim_{u\to\infty} \mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{s \in [0, h(u)]} X(Y(s)) > u\right)$, for some suitably chosen function…
Given a bounded class of functions G and independent random variables X1, . . . , Xn, we provide an upper bound for the expectation of the supremum of the empirical process over elements of G having a small variance. Our bound applies in the cases where G is a VC-subgraph or a VC-major class and it is of smaller order than those one could get by using a universal entropy bound over the whole class G . It also involves explicit constants and does not require the knowledge of the entropy of G
We prove that when a sequence of Lévy processes $X^{(n)}$ or a normed sequence of random walks $S^{(n)}$ converges a.s. on the Skorokhod space toward a Lévy process $X$, the sequence $L^{(n)}$ of local times at the supremum of $X^{(n)}$ converges uniformly on compact sets in probability toward the local time at the supremum of $X$. A consequence of this result is that the sequence of (quadrivariate) ladder processes (both ascending and descending) converges jointly in law towards the ladder processes of $X$. As an application, we show that in general, the sequence $S^{(n)}$ conditioned to stay…
An absolutely convergent double series representation for the density of the supremum of $α$-stable Levy process is given in [3, Theorem 2] for almost all irrational $α$. This result cannot be made stronger in the following sense: the series does not converge absolutely when $α$ belongs to a certain subset of irrational numbers of Lebesgue measure zero (see [6, Theorem 2]). Our main result in this note shows that for every irrational $α$ there is a way to rearrange the terms of the double series, so that it converges to the density of the supremum. We show how one can establish this stronger r…
In this article we derive formulas for the probability $P(\sup_{t\leq T} X(t)>u)$ $T>0$ and $P(\sup_{t<\infty} X(t)>u)$ where $X$ is a spectrally positive Lévy process with infinite variation. The formulas are generalizations of the well-known Takács formulas for stochastic processes with non-negative and interchangeable increments. Moreover, we find the joint distribution of $\inf_{t\leq T} Y(t)$ and $Y(T)$ where $Y$ is a spectrally negative Lévy process.
It is, perhaps, surprising that the location of the unique supremum of a stationary process on an interval can fail to be uniformly distributed over that interval. We show that this distribution is absolutely continuous in the interior of the interval and describe very specific conditions the density has to satisfy. We establish universal upper bounds on the density and demonstrate their optimality.
Let $\{X(t),t\ge0\}$ be a centered Gaussian process and let $γ$ be a non-negative constant. In this paper we study the asymptotics of $P\{\underset{t\in [0,\mathcal{T}/u^γ]}\sup X(t)>u\}$ as $u\to\infty$, with $\mathcal{T}$ an independent of $X$ non-negative random variable. As an application, we derive the asymptotics of finite-time ruin probability of time-changed fractional Brownian motion risk processes.
Let us consider a real Lévy process X whose transition probabilities are absolutely continuous and have bounded densities. Then the law of the past supremum of X before any deterministic time t is absolutely continuous on (0,\infty). We show that its density f_t(x) is continuous on (0,\infty) if and only if the potential density h' of the upward ladder height process is continuous on (0,\infty). Then we prove that f_t behaves at 0 as h'. We also describe the asymptotic behaviour of f_t, when t tends to infinity. Then some related results are obtained for the density of the meander and this of …
We study the density of the supremum of a strictly stable Lévy process. As was proved recently in F. Hubalek and A. Kuznetsov "A convergent series representation for the density of the supremum of a stable process" (Elect. Comm. in Probab., 16, 84-95, 2011), for almost all irrational values of the stability parameter $α$ this density can be represented by an absolutely convergent series. We show that this result is not valid for all irrational values of $α$: we construct a dense uncountable set of irrational numbers $α$ for which the series does not converge absolutely. Our second goal is to i…
Let $\{X(t) : t \in [0, \infty) \}$ be a centered stationary Gaussian process. We study the exact asymptotics of $\pr (\sup_{s \in [0,T]} X(t) > u)$, as $u \to \infty$, where $T$ is an independent of \{X(t)\} nonnegative random variable. It appears that the heaviness of $T$ impacts the form of the asymptotics, leading to three scenarios: the case of integrable $T$, the case of $T$ having regularly varying tail distribution with parameter $λ\in(0,1)$ and the case of $T$ having slowly varying tail distribution.
We show that the law of the overall supremum $\bar{X}_t=\sup_{s\le t}X_s$ of a Lévy process $X$ before the deterministic time $t$ is equivalent to the average occupation measure $μ_t(dx)=\int_0^t\p(X_s\in dx)\,ds$, whenever 0 is regular for both open halflines $(-\infty,0)$ and $(0,\infty)$. In this case, $\p(\bar{X}_t\in dx)$ is absolutely continuous for some (and hence for all) $t>0$, if and only if the resolvent measure of $X$ is absolutely continuous. We also study the cases where 0 is not regular for one of the halflines $(-\infty,0)$ or $(0,\infty)$. Then we give absolute continuity crit…
Consider a random process s solution of the stochastic partial differential equation Ls = w with L a homogeneous operator and w a multidimensional Lévy white noise. In this paper, we study the asymptotic effect of zooming in or zooming out of the process s. More precisely, we give sufficient conditions on L and w so that the rescaled versions of s converges in law to a self-similar process of order H at coarse scales and at fine scales. The parameter H depends on the homogeneity order of the operator L and the Blumenthal-Getoor indices associated to the Lévy white noise w. Finally, we apply ou…
If $X$ is a spectrally positive stable process of index $α\in(1,2)$ whose Lévy measure has density $cx^{-α-1}$ on $(0,\infty),$ and $S_1=\sup_{0<t\leq1}X_t,$ it is known that $P(S_1>x)\backsim cα^{-1}x^{-α}$ as $x\to\infty.$ It is also known that $S_1$has a continuous density, $s$ say. The point of this note is to show that $s(x)\backsim cx^{-(α+1)}$ as $x\to\infty.$
Let $X=(X_t)_{t\ge0}$ be a stable Lévy process of index $α\in(1,2)$ with no negative jumps and let $S_t=\sup_{0\le s\le t}X_s$ denote its running supremum for $t>0$. We show that the density function $f_t$ of $S_t$ can be characterized as the unique solution to a weakly singular Volterra integral equation of the first kind or, equivalently, as the unique solution to a first-order Riemann--Liouville fractional differential equation satisfying a boundary condition at zero. This yields an explicit series representation for $f_t$. Recalling the familiar relation between $S_t$ and the first entry t…
This paper addresses heavy-tailed large deviation estimates for the distribution tail of functionals of a class of spectrally one-sided Lévy process. Our contribution is to show that these estimates remain valid in a near-critical regime. This complements recent similar results that have been obtained for the all-time supremum of such processes. Specifically, we consider local asymptotics of the all-time supremum, the supremum of the process until exiting $[0,\infty)$, the maximum jump until that time, and the time it takes until exiting $[0,\infty)$. The proofs rely, among other things, on pr…
For a spectrally negative positive self-similar Markov process with an a.s. finite overall supremum we provide, in tractable detail, a kind of conditional Wiener-Hopf factorization at the maximum of the absorption time at zero, the conditioning being on the overall supremum and the jump at the overall supremum. In a companion result the Laplace transform of said absorption time (on the event that the process does not go above a given level) is identified under no other assumptions (such as the process admitting a recurrent extension and/or hitting zero continuously), generalizing some existent…
In this paper we derive a technique of obtaining limit theorems for suprema of Lévy processes from their random walk counterparts. For each $a>0$, let $\{Y^{(a)}_n:n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables and $\{X^{(a)}_t:t\ge 0\}$ be a Lévy processes such that $X_1^{(a)}\stackrel{d}{=} Y_1^{(a)}$, $\mathbb E X_1^{(a)}<0$ and $\mathbb E X_1^{(a)}\uparrow0$ as $a\downarrow0$. Let $S^{(a)}_n=\sum_{k=1}^n Y^{(a)}_k$. Then, under some mild assumptions, $Δ(a)\max_{n\ge 0} S_n^{(a)}\stackrel{d}{\to} R\iffΔ(a)\sup_{t\ge 0} X^{(a)}_t\stackrel{d}{\to} R$, for …
For a spectrally positive and strictly stable process with index in (1,2), a series representation is obtained for the joint distribution of the "first passage triple" that consists of the time of first passage and the undershoot and the overshoot at first passage. The result leads to several corollaries, including 1) the joint law of the first passage triple and the pre-passage running supremum, and 2) at a fixed time point, the joint law of the process' value, running supremum, and the time of the running supremum. The representation can be decomposed as a sum of strictly positive functions …
Let X_t, 0<=t<=T be a one-dimensional stochastic process with independent and stationary increments. This paper considers the problem of stopping the process X_t "as close as possible" to its eventual supremum M_T:=sup{X_t: 0<=t<=T}, when the reward for stopping with a stopping time tau<=T is a nonincreasing convex function of M_T-X_tau. Under fairly general conditions on the process X_t, it is shown that the optimal stopping time tau is of "bang-bang" form: it is either optimal to stop at time 0 or at time T. For the case of random walk, the rule tau=T is optimal if the steps of the walk stoc…
If $X$ is a stable process of index $α\in(0,2)$ whose Lévy measure has density $cx^{-α-1}$ on $(0,\infty)$, and $S_1=\sup_{0<t\leq1}X_t$, it is known that $P(S_1>x)\backsim Aα^{-1}x^{-α}$ as $x\to\infty$ and $P(S_1\leq x)\backsim Bα^{-1}ρ^{-1}x^{αρ}$ as $x\downarrow0$. [Here $ρ=P(X_1>0)$ and $A$ and $B$ are known constants.] It is also known that $S_1$ has a continuous density, $m$ say. The main point of this note is to show that $m(x)\backsim Ax^{-(α+1)}$ as $x\to\infty$ and $m(x)\backsim Bx^{αρ-1}$ as $x\downarrow0$. Similar results are obtained for related densities.
Path decomposition is performed to characterize the law of the pre/post-supremum, post-infimum and the intermediate processes of a spectrally negative Levy process taken up to an independent exponential time T: As a result, mainly the distributions of the supremum of the post-infimum process and the maximum drawdown of the pre/postsupremum, post-infimum processes and the intermediate processes are obtained together with the law of drawdown durations.
This paper studies the supremum of a chi-square process with trend over a threshold-dependent-time horizon. Under the assumption that the chi-square process is generated from a centered self-similar Gaussian process and the trend function is modeled by a polynomial function, we obtain the exact tail asymptotics of the supremum of the chi-square process with trend. These results are of interest in applications in engineering, insurance, queueing and statistics, etc. Some possible extensions of our results are also discussed.
We construct a stationary Markov process with trivial tail sigma-field and a nondegenerate observation process such that the corresponding nonlinear filtering process is not uniquely ergodic. This settles in the negative a conjecture of the author in the ergodic theory of nonlinear filters arising from an erroneous proof in the classic paper of H. Kunita (1971), wherein an exchange of intersection and supremum of sigma-fields is taken for granted.
We consider the problem of finding a stopping time that minimises the $L^1$-distance to $θ$, the time at which a Lévy process attains its ultimate supremum. This problem was studied in [12] for a Brownian motion with drift and a finite time horizon. We consider a general Lévy process and an infinite time horizon (only compound Poisson processes are excluded, furthermore due to the infinite horizon the problem is only interesting when the Lévy process drifts to $-\infty$). Existing results allow us to rewrite the problem as a classic optimal stopping problem, i.e. with an adapted payoff process…
In this paper we introduce a ten-parameter family of Lévy processes for which we obtain Wiener-Hopf factors and distribution of the supremum process in semi-explicit form. This family allows an arbitrary behavior of small jumps and includes processes similar to the generalized tempered stable, KoBoL and CGMY processes. Analytically it is characterized by the property that the characteristic exponent is a meromorphic function, expressed in terms of beta and digamma functions. We prove that the Wiener-Hopf factors can be expressed as infinite products over roots of a certain transcendental equat…
In the setting of the classical Cramer-Lundberg risk insurance model, Albrecher and Hipp (2007) introduced the idea of tax payments. More precisely, if $X = \{X_t : t\geq 0\}$ represents the Cramer-Lundberg process and, for all $t\geq 0$, $S_t = \sup_{s\leq t}X_s$, then Albrecher and Hipp (2007) study $X_t - γS_t$, $t\geq 0$, where $γ\in(0,1)$ is the rate at which tax is paid. This model has been generalised to the setting that $X$ is a spectrally negative Lévy process by Albrecher et al. \cite{albr_ren_zhou}. Finally Kyprianou and Zhou (2009) extend this model further by allowing the rate at …
This note provides a factorization of a Lévy pocess over a phase-type horizon $τ$ given the phase at the supremum, thereby extending the Wiener-Hopf factorization for $τ$ exponential. One of the factors is defined using time reversal of the phase process. It is shown that there are a variety of time-reversed representations, all yielding the same factor. Consequences of this are discussed and examples provided. Additionally, some explicit formulas for the joint law of the supremum and the terminal value of the process at $τ$ are given.
When a Brownian motion is scaled according to the law of the iterated logarithm, its supremum converges to one as time tends to zero. Upper large deviations of the supremum process can be quantified by writing the problem in terms of hitting times and applying a result of Strassen (1967) on hitting time densities. We extend this to a small-time large deviations principle for the supremum of scaled Ito diffusions, using as our main tool a refinement of Strassen's result due to Lerche (1986).
We study the supremum of some random Dirichlet polynomials and obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for supremum expectation that extend the optimal estimate of Halász-Queffélec and enable to cunstruct random polynomials with unusually small maxima. Our approach in proving these results is entirely based on methods of stochastic processes, in particular the metric entropy method.
We consider the optimal prediction problem of stopping a spectrally negative Lévy process as close as possible to a given distance $b \geq 0$ from its ultimate supremum, under a squared error penalty function. Under some mild conditions, the solution is fully and explicitly characterised in terms of scale functions. We find that the solution has an interesting non-trivial structure: if $b$ is larger than a certain threshold then it is optimal to stop as soon as the difference between the running supremum and the position of the process exceeds a certain level (less than $b$), while if $b$ is s…
We study the supremum of some random Dirichlet polynomials with independent coefficients and obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for supremum expectation thus extending the results from our previous work (see http://arXiv.org/abs/math/0703691). Our approach in proving these results is entirely based on methods of stochastic processes, in particular the metric entropy method.
Let $Y$ be a spectrally positive Lévy process with $E Y_1<0$, $C$ an independent subordinator with finite expectation, and $X=Y+C$. A curious distributional equality proved in Huzak et al., Ann. Appl. Probab. 14 (2004) 1278--1397, states that if $E X_1<0$, then $\sup_{0\le t <\infty}Y_t$ and the supremum of $X$ just before the first time its new supremum is reached by a jump of $C$ have the same distribution. In this paper we give an alternative proof of an extension of this result and offer an explanation why it is true.
Let $X(t),t\in \mathbb{R}$ be a stochastically continuous stationary max-stable process with Fréchet marginals $Φ_α, α>0$ and set $M_X(T)=\sup_{t \in [0,T]} X(t),T>0$. In the light of the seminal articles [1,2], it follows that $A_T=M_X(T)/T^{1/α}$ converges in distribution as $T\to \infty$ to $\mathcal{H}_Z^{1/α} X(1)$, where $\mathcal{H}_Z$ is the Pickands constant corresponding to the spectral process $Z$ of $X$. In this contribution we derive explicit formulas for $\mathcal{H}_Z$ in terms of $Z$ and show necessary and sufficient conditions for its positivity. From our analysis it follows t…
We study the supremum of random Dirichlet polynomials $D_N(t)=\sum_{n=1}^N\varepsilon_n d(n) n^{- s}$, where $(\varepsilon_n)$ is a sequence of independent Rademacher random variables, and $ d $ is a sub-multiplicative function. The approach is gaussian and entirely based on comparison properties of Gaussian processes, with no use of the metric entropy method.
Given a stable Lévy process $X=(X_t)_{0\le t\le T}$ of index $α\in(1,2)$ with no negative jumps, and letting $S_t=\sup_{0\le s\le t}X_s$ denote its running supremum for $t\in [0,T]$, we consider the optimal prediction problem \[V=\inf_{0\leτ\le T}\mathsf{E}(S_T-X_τ)^p,\] where the infimum is taken over all stopping times $τ$ of $X$, and the error parameter $p\in(1,α)$ is given and fixed. Reducing the optimal prediction problem to a fractional free-boundary problem of Riemann--Liouville type, and finding an explicit solution to the latter, we show that there exists $α_*\in(1,2)$ (equal to 1.57 …
Let $\{X(t):t\in[0,\infty)\}$ be a centered Gaussian process with stationary increments and variance function $σ^2_X(t)$. We study the exact asymptotics of ${\mathbb{P}}(\sup_{t\in[0,T]}X(t)>u)$ as $u\to\infty$, where $T$ is an independent of $\{X(t)\}$ non-negative Weibullian random variable. As an illustration, we work out the asymptotics of the supremum distribution of fractional Laplace motion.
This paper is concerned with finite sample approximations to the supremum of a non-degenerate $U$-process of a general order indexed by a function class. We are primarily interested in situations where the function class as well as the underlying distribution change with the sample size, and the $U$-process itself is not weakly convergent as a process. Such situations arise in a variety of modern statistical problems. We first consider Gaussian approximations, namely, approximate the $U$-process supremum by the supremum of a Gaussian process, and derive coupling and Kolmogorov distance bounds.…
This paper is devoted to investigation of supremum of averaged deviations $|X(t)-f(t)-\int_{\mathbb {T}}(X(u)-f(u))\,\mathrm {d}μ(u)/μ(\mathbb {T})|$ of a stochastic process from Orlicz space of random variables using the method of majorizing measures. An estimate of distribution of supremum of deviations $|X(t)-f(t)|$ is derived. A special case of the $L_q$ space is considered. As an example, the obtained results are applied to stochastic processes from the $L_2$ space with known covariance functions.
We study the Wiener-Hopf factorization for Lévy processes $X_t$ with completely monotone jumps. Extending previous results of L.C.G. Rogers, we prove that the space-time Wiener-Hopf factors are complete Bernstein functions of both the spatial and the temporal variable. As a corollary, we prove complete monotonicity of: (a) the tail of the distribution function of the supremum of $X_t$ up to an independent exponential time; (b) the Laplace transform of the supremum of $X_t$ up to a fixed time $T$, as a function of $T$. The proof involves a detailed analysis of the holomorphic extension of the c…
We present a short and self-contained proof of the following result: a random time is an honest time that avoids all stopping times if and only if it coincides with the (last) time of maximum of a nonnegative local martingale with zero terminal value and no jumps while at its running supremum, where the latter running supremum process is continuous. Illustrative examples involving local martingales with discontinuous paths are provided.
A two-sided exit problem is solved for a difference of a compound Poisson process and a compound renewal process. More precisely, the Laplace transforms of the joint distribution of the first exit time, the value of the overshoot and the value of a linear component at this instant are found. Further, we study the process reflected in its supremum. We determine the main two-boundary characteristics of the process reflected in its supremum. These results are then applied for studying the $ M^{\varkappa}|G^δ|1|B$ system. We derive the distribution of a busy period and the numbers of customers in …
