We study the evolution of the Kondo effect in heavy fermion compounds, Yb(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ (0$\leqslant$ x $\leqslant$ 1), by means of temperature-dependent electric resistivity and specific heat. The ground state of YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ can be well described by a Kondo model with degeneracy $N$ = 8 and a $T_K\sim$30 K. In the presence of a very similar total CEF splitting with YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$, the ground state of YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is close to a Kondo state with degeneracy $N$ = 2 and a much lower $T_K\sim$ 2 K. Upon Co substitution, the coherence temperature of YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is suppressed, accompanied by an emerging Schottky-like feature in specific heat associated with the thermal depopulation of CEF levels upon cooling. For 0.4$\lesssim$ x $\lesssim$ 0.9, the ground state remains roughly the same which can be qualitatively understood by Kondo effect in the presence of CEF splitting. There is no clear indication of Kondo coherence observable in resistivity within this substitution range down to 500 mK. The coherence re-appears at around x$\gtrsim$ 0.9 and the coherence temperature increases with higher Co concentration levels.
The effects of reduced dimensions and the interfaces on antiferromagnetic quantum criticality are studied in epitaxial Kondo superlattices, with alternating $n$ layers of heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_5$ and 7 layers of normal metal YbRhIn$_5$. As $n$ is reduced, the Kondo coherence temperature is suppressed due to the reduction of effective Kondo screening. The Néel temperature is gradually suppressed as $n$ decreases and the quasiparticle mass is strongly enhanced, implying dimensional control toward quantum criticality. Magnetotransport measurements reveal that a quantum critical po…
Hexagonal CeRhSn with paramagnetic $4f$ moments on a distorted Kagome lattice displays zero-field quantum critical behavior related to geometrical frustration. We report high-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements under multiextreme conditions such as uniaxial stress up to 200 MPa, temperatures down to 0.1 K and magnetic fields up to 10 T. Under uniaxial stress along the $a$-direction, quantum criticality disappears and a complex magnetic phase diagram arises with a sequence of phases below 1.2 K and fields between 0 and 3 T ($\parallel a$). Since the Kondo coupling inc…
Although the single-impurity Kondo physics has already been well understood, the understanding of the Kondo lattice problem where a dense array of local moments couples to the conduction electrons is still far from complete. The ability of creating and tuning the Kondo lattice in non-f-electron systems will be great helpful for further understanding the Kondo lattice behavior. Here we show that the Pb intercalation in the charge-density-wave-driven narrow-electronic-band system 1T-TaS2 induces a transition from the insulating gap to a sharp Kondo resonance in the scanning tunneling microscopy …

We propose that a pertinently engineered double superconducting island connected to two spinless one-dimensional conducting leads can work as a tunable (iso)spin Kondo and charge Kondo system, with the lead index regarded as an effective isospin degree of freedom. We evidence how, by tuning a single gate voltage applied to the island, it is possible to make the system switch from the (iso)spin Kondo to the charge-Kondo phase, passing across an intermediate phase, in which the Kondo impurity is effectively irrelevant for the low-temperature behavior of the system. Eventually, we evidence how to…
There is considerable interest in the intersection of correlations and topology, especially in metallic systems. Among the outstanding questions are how strong correlations drive novel topological states and whether such states can be readily controlled. Here we study the effect of a Zeeman coupling on a Weyl-Kondo semimetal in a nonsymmorphic and noncentrosymmetric Kondo-lattice model. A sequence of distinct and topologically nontrivial semimetal regimes are found, each containing Kondo-driven and Fermi-energy-bound Weyl nodes. The nodes annihilate at a magnetic field that is smaller than wha…
Bulk and surface state contributions to the electrical resistance of single-crystal samples of the topological Kondo insulator compound SmB6 are investigated as a function of crystal thickness and surface charge density, the latter tuned by ionic liquid gating with electrodes patterned in a Corbino disk geometry on a single surface. By separately tuning bulk and surface conduction channels, we show conclusive evidence for a model with an insulating bulk and metallic surface states, with a crossover temperature that depends solely on the relative contributions of each conduction channel. The su…
We investigate the Kondo effect of the Fermi arcs in a time-reversal-invariant Weyl semimetal with the variational method. To show the consequence brought out by the nontrivial spin texture, we calculate the spatial spin-spin correlation functions. The correlation functions exhibit high anisotropy. The diagonal correlation functions are dominated by the antiferromagnetic correlation while the off-diagonal part has more complicated pattern. The correlation functions obey the same symmetry as the spin texture. Tuning chemical potential changes the pattern of the correlation functions and the cor…
Noncentrosymmetric Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ has attracted a lot of attention as a candidate for strongly correlated topological material, yet its experimental ground state remains a matter of contention. Two conflicting scenarios have emerged from a comparison to prototypical Kondo insulator Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pt$_{3}$: either Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ is a spin-orbit-driven topological semimetal or a Kondo insulator with smaller Kondo coupling than its Pt counterpart. Here we determine the ground state of Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$ via electrical resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure,…
We consider the Kondo effect in Y-junctions of anisotropic XY models in an applied magnetic field along the critical lines characterized by a gapless excitation spectrum. We find that, while the boundary interaction Hamiltonian describing the junction can be recasted in the form of a four-channel, spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Kondo Hamiltonian, the number of channels effectively participating in the Kondo effect depends on the chain parameters, as well as on the boundary couplings at the junction. The system evolves from an effective four-channel topological Kondo effect for a junction of XX-cha…

Quantum criticality in certain heavy-fermion metals is believed to go beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. In particular, there is considerable evidence for Kondo destruction: a disappearance of the static Kondo singlet amplitude that results in a sudden reconstruction of Fermi surface across the quantum critical point and an extra critical energy scale. This effect can be analyzed in terms of a dynamical interplay between the Kondo and RKKY interactions. In the Kondo-destroyed phase, a well-defined Kondo resonance is lost, but Kondo singlet correlations remain at nonze…
The study of (quantum) phase transitions in heavy-fermion compounds relies on a detailed understanding of the microscopic control parameters that induce them. While the influence of external pressure is rather straight forward, atomic substitutions are more involved. Nonetheless, replacing an elemental constituent of a compound with an isovalent atom is---effects of disorder aside---often viewed as merely affecting the lattice constant. Based on this picture of chemical pressure, the unit-cell volume is identified as an empirical proxy for the Kondo coupling. Here instead, we propose an "orbit…
The observation of quantum criticality in diverse classes of strongly correlated electron systems has been instrumental in establishing ordering principles, discovering new phases, and identifying the relevant degrees of freedom and interactions. At focus so far have been insulators and metals. Semimetals, which are of great current interest as candidate phases with nontrivial topology, are much less explored in experiments. Here we study the Kondo semimetal CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The power-law divergence of the m…
We demonstrate that laser excitations can coherently induce a novel Kondo effect in ultracold atoms in optical lattices. Using a model of alkaline-earth fermions with two orbitals, it is shown that the optically coupled two internal states are dynamically entangled to form the Kondo-singlet state, overcoming the heating effect due to the irradiation. Furthermore, a lack of SU($N$) symmetry in the optical coupling provides a peculiar feature in the Kondo effect, which results in spin-selective renormalization of effective masses. We also discuss effects of interorbital exchange interactions, an…
We study an orbitally degenerate Kondo effect in a triangular triple quantum dot (TTQD), where the three dots are connected vertically with a single metallic lead through electron tunneling. Both spin and orbital degrees of freedom play an important role in the SU(4) Kondo effect. This is demonstrated by an equilateral TTQD Kondo system at half-filling, by Wilson's numerical renormalization group method. We show how an emergent electric polarization of the TTQD is associated with a crossover from SU(4) to SU(2) symmetry in the low-temperature state. A marked sign reversal of the electric polar…
The Kondo effect of a single magnetic impurity embedded in the Lieb lattice is studied by the numerical renormalization group. When the band flatness is present in the local density of states, it quenches the participation of all dispersive electrons in the Kondo singlet formation, and reduces the many-body Kondo problem to a two-electron molecular Kondo problem. The two-electron analog of the many-body Kondo singlet, a quantum entanglement of two spins, is stable at low temperature, and the impurity contributions to thermodynamical and dynamical quantities are qualitatively different from tha…
We show that a junction of three off-critical quantum Ising chains can be regarded as a quantum spin chain realization of the two-channel spin-1/2 overscreened Kondo effect with two superconducting leads. We prove that, as long as the Kondo temperature is larger than the superconducting gap, the equivalent Kondo model flows towards the 2 channel Kondo fixed point. We argue that our system provides the first controlled realization of 2 channel Kondo effect with superconducting leads. This, besides its the theoretical interest, is of importance for potential applications to a number of context, …
The Kondo effect, which originates from the screening of a localized magnetic moment by a spin-spin interaction, is widely observed in non-artificial magnetic materials, artificial quantum dots, and carbon nanotubes. In devices based on quantum dots or carbon nanotubes that target quantum information applications, the Kondo effect can be tuned by a gate voltage, a magnetic field, or light. However, the manipulation of the Kondo effect in non-artificial materials has not been thoroughly studied; in particular, the artificial creation of the Kondo effect remains unexplored. Per this subject stud…
Magnetic impurities in three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl systems are shown to exhibit a fascinatingly diverse range of Kondo physics, with distinctive experimental spectroscopic signatures. When the Fermi level is precisely at the Dirac point, Dirac semimetals are in fact unlikely candidates for a Kondo effect due to the pseudogapped density of states. However, the influence of a nearby quantum critical point leads to the unconventional evolution of Kondo physics for even tiny deviations in the chemical potential. Separating the degenerate Dirac nodes produces a Weyl phase: time-reversal symmet…
We investigate the spectral properties of serially coupled triple quantum dot (TQD) system by means of the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) approach. We find that with the increase of the interdot coupling t, the first Kondo screening is followed by another Kondo effect reappearing due to the transition from the respective Kondo singlet state of individual QD to the coherence bonding state generated among the three QDs. The reappearance of Kondo effect results in the three-peak structure of the spectral functions of peripheral QD-1(3). By investigating the susceptibility \c{hi}, we find…
We predict that an anisotropic charge Kondo effect appears in a triple quantum dot, when the system has two-fold degenerate ground states of (1,1,0) and (0,0,1) charge configurations. Using bosonization and refermionization methods, we find that at low temperature, the system has the two different phases of massive charge fluctuations between the two charge configurations and vanishing fluctuations, which are equivalent with the Kondo-screened and ferromagnetic phases of the anisotropic Kondo model, respectively. The phase transition is identifiable by electron conductance measurement, offerin…
